      How much was your lot and what do you expect to pay to build on it? I’m familiar with Lake Martin but not Logan Martin.

      @@AnaMartinez-jq5ee It was a great deal, only 2.7 million for the lot. Will probably spend another 3 to 3.5 million on the house.

      We spent just about $100K on the lot and hoping to build for around $400K. We visited Lake Martin as well but that area was much more rural which helped us to decide on Logan Martin.

    We moved to Alabama in 1996 from New England. We raised our family here and have enjoyed every minute of it. We built our retirement home on Lewis Smith Lake and have been here full time since 2016. We love it! One of our favorite things to do in Alabama is explore all the amazing natural attractions this state has to offer. Cathedral Cavers in Woodville one of Stunning. Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden is a great day out. The Walls of Jericho in Estillfork is a great day long hike to a beautiful canyon. Dismals Canyon in Phil Campbell is so so beautiful. Make sure you go when the very rare GLOW WORMS are in their larva stage. Its a sight worth seeing, trust me. Now the Gulf beaches are incredible with amazing food choices. Being retired, we prefer to go in October/November when there are less tourists. Birmingham has an AMAZING restaurant scene. They have a very large number of James Beard award winning chefs. I could go on and on. We love Alabama so much. We will be buried here!

    I'm looking at moving to Alabama in about 4 1/2 years, but I'm looking at the southern part of the state along the Florida border as I'm fed up freezing my carcass off here in Wisconsin. As much as I wanted to move back to FL (I lived there from 1993-2000), I've essentially been priced out of the state. I'd be close enough to the state where I can be on the beach in roughly 2 hours, yet not be in the bullseye of a hurricane every summer. Plus I would have a much lower cost of living. Also, Alabama offers retirees very generous tax incentives, unlike Wisconsin which offers literally none. On a final note, I would rather have 95 degrees with a 105 heat index over 30 below zero wind chills.

    What you have done i am getting ready to do...I am curious...are you still happy there? Am worried to come there with real wealth and i will become a target.

      Our house is still being built so we aren't there yet. We don't have real wealth but have met people who do, and they are very happy there. We haven't heard them mention that fear.

      Do you get a lot of tornadoes? I grew up in Wisconsin, so I am no stranger to them, but it has been a while. What do you do to prepare for them?

      @@retirementincolor When you build your home, build in a tornado shelter. You will be fine. I have been here for 30 years and its rear you would be affected much if at all.

    What no taxes on property for all 65 and older? Fully Retired . If you make more than 33,000 if still working you pay property taxes .

    • @retirementincolor
      @retirementincolor  2 месяца назад

      If you are over 65 years of age, or permanent and totally disabled (regardless of age), or blind (regardless of age), you are exempt from the state portion of property tax. County taxes may still be due. You need to contact the local taxing official to claim the homestead exemption.
