This soldier was so soft spoken. He is a real badass tho. Talk soft and carry a big club.

he's soft spoken because he is guarding the dead. If he was doing something else that might change.

You seriously need integrity and patience to have a 24 hour shift. These guys are the probably among the most disciplined in the Army seeing as how precise and exact their movements must be during both the march and the changing of the guard.

Not I, because I couldn’t do it correctly for only thirty minutes. I’d mess up! These soldiers are some of the most elite in the world, but people think that they (and the “Beefeaters” that guard Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London- again, super-elite soldiers) are little more than security guards carrying toys. Nope, they’re hardcore soldiers with very real weapons that they absolutely can use if they are forced to do so.

+Louis S.W It would be far more honorable, and respectable if they put that much care and concern toward actually dealing with our enemies in the manner called for. That, would makes us proud, and therefore, them honorable. Guarding the "dead", and ignoring the living, AND the threats right here in their own country is no honorable thing. Stop wasting our hard-earned money on pomp, and wasted munitions.

The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is amazing to watch in person. It is also amazing to watch on video. I NEVER realized that so much goes into all of the detail and the care of everything they do, how demanding it is or how few are actually chosen for this extremely honorable duty. Thank you for sharing this and giving us all a behind the scenes look at what is really involved in this honor.

    1.
How many steps does the guard take during his
walk across the tomb of the Unknowns
    and why?

    21
    steps:
    It
alludes to the twenty-one gun salute which
    is the
    highest honor given any
    military or foreign
    dignitary.

    2.
How long does he hesitate after his about face
    to begin his return
    walk and why?

    21
seconds for the same reason as answer number
    1
    3.
    Why are his gloves wet?
    His
gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his
    grip on the rifle.

    4.
Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all
    the time
    and, if
    not, why not?
He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.
    5.
How often are the guards changed?
    Guards
    are changed every thirty minutes,
    twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a
    year.

    6.
What are the physical traits of the guard
    limited to?
    For
    a
person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he
    must be
    between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and
his waist size cannot exceed 30.
    They
must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb,
live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot
drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of
their lives. They cannot swear in public for the
rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the
uniform or the tomb in any way.
    After
two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that
    is worn on
    their lapel signifying they
served as guard of the tomb. There are only
400 presently worn. The guard must obey
these rules for the rest of their
    lives or
    give up the wreath pin.
    The
shoes are specially made with very thick soles
to keep the heat and cold from their feet.
There are metal heel plates that extend to
    the top
of the shoe in order to make the loud click as
    they come
    to a halt.
    There are no
wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards
    dress for duty
    in front of a full-length
    mirror.
The first six months of duty a
guard cannot talk to anyone nor
    watch TV.
All off duty time is spent studying the 175
    notable people laid
    to rest in
    Arlington National Cemetery ..
A guard must memorize who they are and where
they are interred. Among the notables are:
    President Taft,
    Joe Lewis {the boxer}
Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most
decorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame.
Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty..
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.
    In
    2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was
    approaching Washington ,
    DC , our
    US Senate/House took 2 days
off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of
    the dangers from the
    hurricane, the military
members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb
    of
the Unknown Soldier were given permission
    to suspend the assignment. They
respectfully declined the offer, "No way,
    Sir!" Soaked to the skin,
    marching in the
pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that
    guarding
the Tomb was not just an assignment,
it was the highest honor that can be
    afforded
to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled
    continuously,
    24/7, since 1930.

some of yall really missed the point of this...the reason its so important is bc its to honor those who were never found, identified, etc...imagine giving your life for our freedoms and in an instant no1 knowing where or how you left us, families not knowing where your body is to lay u to rest and visit your grave, or for those who went to wat before we had way of notating everyone who served. like the soldier said, these men and women gave up their identities not just their lives for us...no1 is asking you to give your time to them, but the soldiers who do consider it an honor and calling it a waste of time is disrespectful to them...maybe do more with ur life than talk crap about our servicemen behind a computer, then you can have room to talk

I may not be a soldier But I'm a Star Rank Boy Scout. Our rules of uniform may not be as strict but there are guide lines to follow. Boy Scouts may not be Military but I treat it as military. When I'm in my Class-A uniform, I'm representing my Boy Scout troop. What I'm trying to say is, these men are representing the USA Military to protect a monument made to represent all fallen soldiers that wasn't Identified. Those men served their country to protect us but when they died. there name wasn't known to show who they were. To me, these Guards are the last and only chance that we have to show thanks AND respect to these unknown soldiers. Like I said, I may not be a us soldier but I always give respect to those who are.
If there is anything in this post that disrespects the Tomb or the men who guard it, let me know and I will remove this post. This post is meant as a salute to the tomb, the guards and any active duty soldier.

It may be a stretch to say that the badge is "the most difficult" to earn. The Medal of Honor probably deserves that title. Their job as guards is no doubt tough and deserves praise but please keep such labels in perspective when reporting.

actually since it is a military installation if someone is trespassing and the sentinel feels that lives are in serious danger then he is aloud to open fire if it is absolutely needed

@djghook You are comparing two very different things. A badge is not the same thing as a service or combat medal. The Tomb Guard badge remains one of the rarest issued in the Armed Forces, because so many who attempt to get it can not measure up.
Furthermore, the TG badge and others are indeed earned. One does not "earn" a Medal of Honor....you are awarded it, you receive it.

I wouldn't suggest that to the guys that guard the tomb. I believe any service member will tell you that the unknowns that fall in battle deserves this level of respect.

Kahlil Gibran - “I once heard a learned man say, 'Every evil has its remedy, except folly. To reprimand an obstinate fool or to preach to a dolt is like writing upon the water. Christ healed the blind, the halt, the palsied, and the leprous. But the fool He could not cure.'”

they do not walk for 24 hours straight. during the summer they are changed every half hour during the winter every hour and at night when the cemetery is not opened they are changed every 2 hours. they usually walk about a dozen times during their 24 hour shift but some sentinels have been known to walk back to back with each other for their full 24 hour shift

@RyannRebel thats actually not true. the marines served in the revolution, a very small part. they were disposed of after because they werent needed. i cant remember what the date is but sometime in the late 18th century or early 19th century congress officially declared the marines as part of the US military.

Great dedication, but 1/64? That's the thickness of paper. 1/16 (what he said in the other vid and what I think he meant here) is more like it. It's still an amazing amount of dedication. I thought MY shoes were shinny.

Combat zone? Not unless you consider arlington cemetery a combat zone. This guy got assigned to a ceremonial unit, spent 4 years guarding a cemetery then when it came time to re-enlist, went back home to spend his GI Bill money that you paid for. Some hero. LOL.
