I'm a Korean with random red hairs and freckles. And I too carry this marker from Niall in my paternal line. My Father's side has long been French, so one of Niall's sons or Niall himself must have visited the mainland. Researching him now..
My husbands mother is Japanese and has the Niall haplogroup from his Irish father, my husband also has freckles and red hairs in his beard. The red hairs really stand out in sunlight lol.
This isn't that surprising. During the heyday of the Ui Niall, Ireland's population was less than a third of what it is today. The clan leaders also practiced polygamy. When you take those two factors into account and consider the mathematical progression of births that has occurred over roughly 1500 years it's pretty reasonable that 10% of the Irish share the genetic marker.
I also share the same haplogroup with High King Niall (R-M269, R-BY17 subclade) which is weird as I am of Russian ancestry and live in Latvia. My theory is that at some point my Irish ancestor went to the Russian Empire to serve there as a professional, and spread his genes there.
I am Jamaican 42% European, 56% African - 18% Irish, British. According to 23andme - I share a paternal-line ancestor with Niall of the Nine Hostages. My paternal haplogroup is R-S6000 which stems from a branch of R-M343 called R-M269, one of the most prolific paternal lineages across western Eurasia. The spread of haplogroup R-M269 in northern Ireland and Scotland was likely aided by men like Niall of the Nine Hostages. Perhaps more myth than man, Niall of the Nine Hostages is said to have been a King of Tara in northwestern Ireland in the late 4th century C.E. His name comes from a tale of nine hostages that he held from the regions he ruled over. Though the legendary stories of his life may have been invented hundreds of years after he died, genetic evidence suggests that the Uí Néill dynasty, whose name means "descendants of Niall," did in fact trace back to just one man who bore a branch of haplogroup R-M269.
Me too. Just got my DNA results last Friday, and was shocked to learn I am as well. I was told I was Eastern European only now to realize I'm Irish to my surprise. My mom is 82% Irish. Now things I believe in and things I've said all make sense to me now. I am going to plan a trip to Ireland to explore and learn more. I've never been. My mom has been there a few times. Hello to all on this thread, new family I never knew about, and I wish you all many blessings!
During the great potato famine in Ireland in the 1840's the Irish people that were leaving the country would litreally go onto any boat avalibale to them to get out of ireland. Some of these boats leaving Ireland were merchant boats that commonly went down to areas such as Puerto Rico and Jamaica to trade, when the merchant vessels came to these island they would either leave the irish passangers behind or the irish people would leave the boats and look for work. These Irish people stayed on these islands and raised their families there, this is the reason we get black men with Irish names such as Eddie Murphy and Bob Marley, they're descendents of Irish people who emigrated to the caribbean in the 1840's. You might either have a great grand mother or great grand father that came to Puerto Rico in the 1840's and raised their family there.
Bardán Mac Guibhir Thank you so much for that feedback. Very interesting. It’s pretty cool to think that Niall is pretty much the starting me for my fathers Paternal line... looking at us people probably wouldn’t believe it but the DNA is proof
We've since been expanding the Y Haplotree on this. The unique markers they were referring to were those are R1b-M222, dated around 2000-2200 years ago (before Niall would have been born). We think Niall may have been R1b-ZZ87 descendant from next SNP above him, R1b-DF105; dated around 250 CE. These SNPs are downstream (descendant of) M222.
Known to generations of Dublin schoolkids as Niall of the Nine Sausages. In my 4th class (= 6th grade to Americans) we could relate to this ancestral character because among us we had some of our own surreptitious sausage-takers, one of whom turned out to be an endlessly hungry kid called Niall. While all else that we learned about our early history fades from memory, some things stick.
Same here! Spanish, Portuguese, Irish and British. Strangest thing is, when I chose my confirmation name over 25 years ago, I chose the name Niall because I felt strongly connected to it. Needless to say, when I received this result, I was floored. Stunned. Still in disbelief that of all the Irish names I could have chosen, this one felt right.
It is fascinating to see who comes from Niall. But who did he come from? According to my 23andMe DNA report: "You share a paternal-line ancestor with Niall of the Nine Hostages. . . . Your paternal haplogroup, R-M167, traces back to a man who lived less than 10,000 years ago [R-M269 common ancestor]."
When the power of the Gaelic clans in Ireland was broken by the Tudors in the early 17th c, and in the couple of centuries following, the warrior class of Irish society fled the country in huge numbers & became a major presence in the soldiery & particularly in the officer class of many European countries, especially the Catholic ones who were enemies of the Brits. Many of the former Irish gentry hoped through these ties to eventually lead a successful rebellion & expel the British. This resistance was especially embodied in the clans of the north like O'Neill & O'Donnell. Maybe their presence in large numbers in the Spanish military has a connection with the prevalence of this gene in Spanish-speaking places, along with the large numbers of Gaels displaced to the Carribbean.
23andMe told me I'm from an uncommon paternal haplogroup called R-FGC9804 that says relation to King Niall, finding out how that is and why my haplogroup is so uncommon would be so cool.
What up royal fam! I’m a Murphy in the paternal haplogroup descended from the Uí Néill dynasty. These Ulster Murphys are different genetically from the currently ubiquitous Cork Murphys. Anyone have any insight on where I can find more info on the clans and groups that emerged from this dynasty?

he had some sons that had tons of kids. his grandson is what brought the o'dohertys to life. still male descendent direct line to Niall. maybe you are descendants of his grandson cenel conaill. or his son

the spelling of my surname varies greatly, through almost 200 years of British census records.Neal,Neild,O'Neil,O'Neill,O'Neal, and O'Neall, were used.I am O'Neil. This may be down to the interpretation or spelling used by the recorder of the compillers. We must remember that many of past generations could not write their names. And the dropping the two lls at the end of surname could have been because it anglisised the name somewhat.Or in my family's case my Great,Great Grandfather marrying a prodestant wife. This would have been around 1840.Also we must consider how catholics were persicuted at this time.I know my own family were stoned on a Sunday, travelling from Flint in N.Wales,to Holywell to the catholic church. The stoning took place in a village called Bagillt, with lies between the two towns.Their mode of transport was donkey and cart. @@OrthoSkyI looked into your new group and it’s a direct line of indentured servants and peasants who struggled to survive.
@@BigRed2 wait what?? They just recently changed my Haplogroup to R-CTS241
@@OrthoSky I just looked that one up and i’m afraid it’s worst then the last one, that group comes from a line of two first cousins who married each other and both suffered from an extreme form of downsyndrom
Rochester NY checking in!
Lake George NY here bud or should I say fam!
Can anyone tell me anything on his reign as High-King?
Like, how well did he politically unite Ireland?
Check out

hey fam! I got the marker too :) so was just googling to find out who Niall of the Nine Hostages was
My ancestor.
Me too apparently.
Hi, my Dad’s 23and me results connects him to Niall of the nine hostages. We would love to know more. He knows that his grandfather was mixed race.
He popped up in my DNA on 23&me, and I am an American of Irish descent
Same for me as well. I was surprised by how Irish I am.
Man it’s like a “family reunion” in the comment section, I too share the same DNA
From 🇨🇦
I just found out I am related to Niall as well. I used the 23andMe kit. Super cool.
Lake George NY checking in! How are all my cousins??
Many of us with West Highland DNA are decendants of Niall and the Kings of Ireland. Back when what is now Northern Ireland was part of Kingdom of Dal riata in what is now West Scotland. M-269. R1b L21 L1335 S764. Maclaren's and many other clan names.
These kings and their first night laws. Now we're all related 🤣
If you think about it all life is related because we all stemmed from the first multicelled organism
Hello fellow Kings and Queens
I’m black with 10% Irish. So happened to be related to this guy
This is just another real reason why racism is a bunch of bullshit brother. Happy to meet you cuz
You are human!😊
Same
It’s curious how trinity still have all the access to these materials
I'm a Korean with random red hairs and freckles. And I too carry this marker from Niall in my paternal line. My Father's side has long been French, so one of Niall's sons or Niall himself must have visited the mainland. Researching him now..
My husbands mother is Japanese and has the Niall haplogroup from his Irish father, my husband also has freckles and red hairs in his beard. The red hairs really stand out in sunlight lol.
This is fascinating to me. This is the haplogroup the men in my family have and there are so many red heads
Here because of 23 and Me.
23 and me got me here too. Lol
Hes my something like 200 time great uncle
I also share the same haplogroup with High King Niall (R-M269, R-BY17 subclade) which is weird as I am of Russian ancestry and live in Latvia. My theory is that at some point my Irish ancestor went to the Russian Empire to serve there as a professional, and spread his genes there.
Everyone is atleast a bit Irish 😂❤
The "Wild Geese" generations of Irish men left to fight in foreign lands, never to return.
I'm Mexican and Spaniard. According to 23andMe im related to this High king. 😮😮 👑
You have some Irish in ya
Same brotha! 😆
Us Irish are Celtiberians
@@Got420Blunt I've taken like 6 DNA tests and sadly I don't have any Irish DNA 😔
@@dannyescudero4081 Hell yeah bro! What part of mexico is your family from? 🙂 mine are from Jalisco, Aquascalientes, and Zacatecas. 🙂
Where's the next part? *The DNA from 20,000 Years ago.*
I have never heard of Niall until I did my DNA test. It revealed that Niall and I share a paternal ancestor. Interesting.
My brother tested on 23andme... our paternal haplogroup links is to Niall... we are Puerto Rican’s .... so interesting

So we are all basically family! One love ✊🏼
I just found out I got paternal lineage. I'm from PR too. Very informative.
So Daniel derived from the hardest Irish man ever 😂
Hello my family it’s good to see y’a when’s the reunion
Paddy’s day of course now it’s your day too !!!!
I took a dna test and i said he was in my family on the dna test
I’m 98% Italian and a descendant of Niall
According to 23&me Nial was my ancestor. I have Welsh, English, German and Polish ancestors!
I am from the NW corner of Georgia, USA and my name is Lively.
I have the marker too. I have a ancestors who are related to Niall dynasty.
I am also Mexican decent and Portuguese and I am also linked to Un Niell
Same here. Spain, Portuguese, Irish/British, and Mexican.
Im decendant and my family are also from Donegal
with the cut backs to day .he might be known now as niall and the reduced amount of hostages
23 genetic company informed me that nearly 3 million possesses this genes
23andMe told me I'm from an uncommon paternal haplogroup called R-FGC9804 that says relation to King Niall, finding out how that is and why my haplogroup is so uncommon would be so cool.
What up royal fam! I’m a Murphy in the paternal haplogroup descended from the Uí Néill dynasty. Been digging into it, and from what little I’ve found, the Murphy clan may have grown from one of his sons who ruled over Inishowen, Eógan mac Néill. These Ulster Murphys are different genetically from the currently ubiquitous Cork Murphys. Anyone have any insight on where I can find more info on the clans and groups that emerged from this dynasty?
There are 3 different murphy clans cork Leinster and ulster the ulster murphy you as I are related to Niall also Scottish clan Moore
I AM Harry Murphy by the way hi cousin
My daughter has this marker. She got it from her father as his DNA also showed this. The Fleming family from Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Hello my fellow brothers.
My brothers!
last name is french, im american, black hair, and apparently im 40% irish and im connected to this man 😭
23 and me states I’m related to Niall paternal R-M167
23 and me brought me here. I’m of Mexican descent.
Me too, my spanish side is from Vizcaya.
My DNA also shows I'm a descendant of Niall. My ancestor Patrick Conley(sp) emigrated with his family from Galway to the US in 1848.
Niall and the 9 sausages 🤣😆😂😅🤣👍👍
Aye. Also related to the mythical Nine Sausages
23andme says my paternal haplogroup comes from the ui neill dynasty but I'm slightly confused so hopefully someone can give me insight. If the Ui Neill dynasty was the O' Neill's and O' Donnell's than how in the world would I be a descendant being that I'm a Murphy?
he had some sons that had tons of kids. his grandson is what brought the o'dohertys to life. still male descendent direct line to Niall. maybe you are descendants of his grandson cenel conaill. or his son
I’m a Murphy in the same paternal haplogroup as the ui neill dynasty too! Been digging into it to see where the Murphys originated. From what little I’ve found so far, the Murphy clan May have grown from one of his sons who ruled over Inishowen, Eógan mac Néill. These Ulster Murphys are different from the Cork Murphys. Hoping to find more pieces to this puzzle as I continue researching!
@@stephaniemurphy8306 I believe I'm an Ulster Murphy since Ancestry say that my dad has a community in Tyrone area. Which do you believe your Murphy's are from?

Yup. Mother family is from Spain
Possibly Niall had Spanish descendants

Hello from Florida fam
Is it the haplogroup: haplogroup R-M269 ?
R-m222
My maternal grandfather's last name was O'Neal. Not sure if he descended from this line
I know that O’Neil’s are directly related to the last high kings. Roderick and Brian the Red. But not sure about why the spellings change. I’m 100% American but my grandmother was an O’Neil.
the spelling of my surname varies greatly, through almost 200 years of British census records.Neal,Neild,O'Neil,O'Neill,O'Neal, and O'Neall, were used.I am O'Neil.
This recollection was passed down verbally by an old aunt.
@terryoneilp1421 I have tried to trace our ancestory back to Ireland, but there are too many road blocks and not enough resources. I found "Find a grave" was very helpful, but even then, the parents of ancestors were not listed in the early to late 1800s. Stoning had to be a horrible way to parish. Thank you for sharing
I just did mine an he’s my Ancestor And I’m from Florida USA

I also share a maternal ancestor with Nelson Mandela. I’m American I’m mixed black-and-white
R-M269 here. I'm from America but I am 76% Irish according to 23 and me. But I have always known of my Irish heritage from my last name and have traced ancestry back thru 3 last name changes as the split from the McKenna clan to different clans moving from Scotland to north west Ireland..
