  • @mobrockets flying some very old, recently built and finished vintage model rocket kits! Thanks to the power of eBay, Launch Lab Rocketry, and various Facebook rocketry groups, most any model rocket kit built and flown "back in the day" can also be purchased, built and flown today! Original Estes "Renegade" and "Rogue" rockets flown, as well as an Estes "Magician" and a Quest "DC Clipper." All maiden flights after building or refurbishing. Enjoying the lush, late fall lawn at McQueen Park in Gilbert. 85 - 97 degree day. Clear skies, open range. "Is this heaven? No ... It's Arizona!"

In 2000, I made a 4 inch diameter Renegade for LDRS. Unfortunately, I busted a fin on landing.

Beautiful day of launching!! It's fun to launch vintage rockets. This year I launched four rockets I built in the 1973-1975 timeframe (Semi-Scale Saturn V, Interceptor, Klingon Battle Cruiser, and Starship Enterprise) I installed new Estes shock cords in each of them. Grass in Arizona? What a luxury!!

I remember building some custom rockets back when I was in high school. Instead of swinging the rocket on a string, over my head to find stability, I was adamant on doing the math to find stability.

I had that Renegade back in the late 70's early 80's but not sure whatever happened to it. Like most of my 80's rockets they got lost over time in moves or damaged and thrown away sadly. I haven't paid up for a replacement for that one but I recently re-purchased the old Strike Fighter with an original Estes Shuttle. About time for Estes to remake that Renegade as a Pro Series, definitely going to get one of the upscaled Goblins now as soon as it's available.

Oh! A PSII Renegade would be amazing… And I hear you about that Goblin! Some people have it already. Should be any time now!

I’ve still got some scars from my early Estes days.

Great video Mike! I sympathized with you over the early struggles, but I rejoiced with you on the Renegade flight. What a relief!!! 😊.
I can’t wait to get down there and try flying off grass! What a novel concept! LOL
