Hard agree on the segregation. I moved to Near West because while the North feels more cohesive, I just felt so...idk....unseen (?) on the north side. I'm from DC/Maryland in Dec 2021 so I need to live in areas that have enough representation to have a beauty supply store within walking distance LOL.

Sameeee! I left west loop and now I’m in near west too. Just so much more accessibility to beauty supply stores, black and brown folks and Caribbean options in the grocery stores.

I'm from a very white town in Fargo, ND that stems from a lot of conservatives so going to Chicago was a nice cultural reset if that makes sense. You see black, hispanic, etc. people here but I have never really seen as many non whites as I did when I was in Chicago and it was NICE. I don't know how to type that without it accidentally coming across wrong and that is NOT what I want so hopefully you know what I mean.
Prior to researching moving to Chicago, I did not know how segregated the city is but now that I do it frustrates me BUT I like that there are so many different cultures like you said.
I hate how much media played up Chicago being dangerous because that's all my sister and I heard when we went to Chicago by ourselves. We didn't have any issues except for a school bus almost hitting us.
I really liked this video as I would not have thought about there being certain types of food you might have a harder time finding there.

I’m glad you are loving Chicago! I can see how big of a difference it must have been to go from ND to Chicago. Thanks for watching!

@@TimewithLivi oh yeah North Dakota can’t even slightly compare. Very eye opening in a positive way to the various cultures I don’t see here.

I'm from Chicago and live here and can tell you the city is FULL of Jamaicans. I'm not sure where you live, but my grocery store packed a lot of Caribbean and west African things, it depends where certain folks live. I wouldn't look for curry in Ukrainian village. There are literal Caribbean grocery stores on 87th Street and also in south shore and south Chicago. Also folks are very friendly, I really want to know where you've been hanging out!

Thank you! I made this video a year ago so I definitely found more Jamaicans. Also I found some good spots with Caribbean options. It wasn’t in the obvious places and I still have to go out my way but it’s okay. As for the people, I’m still navigating that. I’m mainly in the north/downtown side of town.

@@TimewithLivi OMG, please share! I haven't been able to find one good jerk spot where the jerk wasn't just a spicy bbq sauce LOL.

You’re not meeting the right locals. I’m from the West side and we speak and once people get to know you you’re family. Remember the AA’s have southern roots the mind your business is for safety reasons lol. And the West Indians are more North Side. The West Indian Parade is in August. But I also understand people have their own experiences.
