My husband is from Chicago and I live in a small town in Nevada which is 15 miles away from the strip and I believe that Las Vegas is getting worse . People have warned me about Chicago and honestly I just came from a visit. Walked around downtown at night took the train and I am telling you it was not scary. It was a great city.
I love my home, living in Las Vegas has made me appreciate Chicago more. I miss winter, having four seasons, down town, the food, the beach, the festivals, and the overall vibe... There is truly no place like Chicago.
The thing about Chicago crime (in terms of murders and shootings): it's very location dependent. Crime IS on the rise in the "rough" areas: think Englewood, Austin, Lawndale.... however it is not on the rise in the nicer areas (downtown and the northside). Basically the bad areas are getting worse. Car theft/crime/petty crimes are everywhere. You live/work/play in mostly (perhaps only) the nice areas and so you experience less of the crime and also the constant stress that comes with living in those areas. It's important to remember there are MANY different types of Chicago and people's experiences vary depending on their location in the city. Your life here definitely centers around a certain type of Chicago (no hate- it's such as fantastic city. Just many people are not able to experience the Chicago that you know). But there is so much more to the city than downtown, the north side, and occasionally visiting areas like Chinatown, Hyde Park, and Pilsen.

I first visited Chicago on a business trip. Then a few more times for leisure, each time I loved it more and more. Never felt unsafe one time. And yes, the food is awesome. I don’t know -l think some people just lean into a bunch of stereotypes that they hear without actually experiencing things themselves. 🤷♀️
People are quick to believe whatever they hear from the news or what other people have to say without actually visiting the place and seeing it for themselves.
Anytime anybody talks bad about Chicago I always ask them "when is the last time you visited Chicago?" A majority of them have never even been here. Also, Chicago is number one in murders every year, but there is a lot of nuance to this stat. First, over 80% of those murders are by people they knew. Second, the overall violence per capita is not even in the top 20 of the entire country. They never talk about any of this.
They just hear stuff on the news or social media and blindly follow without question. I've lived here 4 months now and I love it here. Never felt unsafe. Sure there are pockets of bad areas and you have your occasional weirdo on the street but coming from CA, it's nothing in comparison. Chicago is a fine city.

Chicago hasn’t been #1 in the country for its murder rate in quite awhile, actually. It’s usually in the top 10-15 but so is every major city. Chicago is THE BEST (minus the weather) city for so many reasons and so many people who poo poo on it have never even been here.
I visited Chicago and I felt so safe of course I avoided the bad ghetto areas but every time I visited I love it there it’s a beautiful city with a great vibe I truly think people overly exaggerated on the bad reputation but for me I was alone in the city so safe I truly enjoyed my visits there I wish I could move but I don’t like the winter
Love this video. My son has lived in Chicago for over 12yrs. Loves it out there. Was even robbed on the train a few yrs ago. He told his friends how fast and efficient the guy was when he sliced his pants pocket. Only my son. We grow them tough in S Jersey.
What I hate about Chicago is the energy I moved from California I got off the plane. I had my cat ears on and people were giving me dirty looks lol also without the cat years. I was just really happy. People told me I can’t be like that because people will try to take advantage of me And no one did it was just people are mad when you’re happy I guess in Chicago and slowly but surely it killed all of my joy and creativity and everything because people were too uncomfortable and I don’t like to make people feel bad. Luckily I’m moving back to LA where I can do what I want if people actually enjoy it.
I love Chicago too! All time favorite city. Winter more specifically the Holidays, is my favorite time in the city. You’re not alone in your obsession with Chicago. 🥰❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Unfortunately, social media has given a microphone to every single person so it's all political non-sense. Chicago isn't even in the top 20 per capita in crime. As far as cost of living it's all relative--wages are higher here so someone in Omaha would get a pay increase moving here. March weather is bi-polar for sure--that's why growing up we go someplace warm for a week.
I don't live in Chicago & NEVER WILL but my bf that's from there got bumped, Robbed, the Beat up on by a few hoodlums right by Grant Park on July 4th a couple years ago (right in front of the Cops who DID NOTHING). In general, it's a SUPER CORRUPT City with strict gun control yet HUNDREDS of Shootings (go figure lmao). Oh, & uncontrolled (instigated & Fueled) Riots with injuries, burning down/robbing of businesses. Plus, So Many Damn people at every hour! Yeah, NO THANK YOU!
Native Chicagoan here. People have so much negative stuff to say about Chicago because they secretly wanna live here. Maybe they came to the city and couldn't make it and had to tuck tail and leave, or that dream of living here was never realized. Now they have this bitter vendetta, or they are blinded by politics. Either way, the amount of rage and negativity folks have towards a city they have never visited or lived in is bizarre. Trust me, nobody cares. To your last point, I'm glad the weather/perception keeps folks away from the city. Without that, we would be mirroring NYC/LA/SF, no doubt.
I think people care more than you think. Chicagoans get mighty pissed when you say anything bad about their city. That alone reeks of insecurity and inferiority complex. Tell a New Yorker that you don't like their city and they'll be like "okay" and go on their merry way. It's cause they ACTUALLY don't care. Believe me, Chicagoans care. As much as they like to pretend they don't. I live here and Chicago truly does have middle child syndrome. Doesn't mean it's not a fine city but let's be real here.
I also get car sick in stop and go traffic and I nearly tossed my cookies by the time I arrived to O'Hare the last time I went by car. So since then I just took the train to avoid getting ill.
The traffic and hearing about violence at times. Other than these, i love Chicago. And yes most of the negative comments are from people that don't live or who once lived here in violent neighborhoods.
is crime in (the "south side" of) Chicago bad, like South Central L.A. (Watts, Compton, Inglewood, Long Beach, East L.A.), Baltimore, Maryland (as protrayed in a TV show called "The Wire" ?), "The Blues Brothers," or "Adventures in Babysitting" (with Elisabeth Shue ("The Karate Kid"): it was filmed in Chicago and Toronto). People call that a stereotype & a hood generalization, that is protrayed in various Hollywood TV shows and movies. If you live in any big city, expect crime to happen... no matter where you live; don't be surprised (go to websites, like: crime spotting, crime mapping; spot crime = just punch in either the local area or zip code, to see if there are any sus(picious) acts happening.) (Maybe (outsider) people don't really know anything unless they actually lived in a specific area, for decades.)
Great job on this Caira! I agree with your five points; especially the last one, the way some people talk about Chicago you’d think we live like that movie The Purge. I live in The West Loop and every time I visit friends in other parts of the country, the crime issue comes up, I always tell them Chicago is not for the weak so stay away 🤣🤣
You moved from California to chicago !!?? I moved from Chicago to California, but i am currently back for personal reasons... I hate being back in chicago
I absolutely love Chicago!! We have been visiting the city for 19 years now and can't wait until we can move there. I saw the title of the video and was like...what??? but love that all of your hates are actually defended by likes. lol Can't wait to see the comments on this one!
I mean Chicago is quite possibly the worst city in the world. The weather, the crime, the taxes, the property value, the traffic, the literal cost of just existing in Chicago, the amount of disrespectful people and the most rude people i have ever met. The list goes on.😅
I think a lot of the hate chicago gets about crime is literally just media blowing it out of proportions. I think if you don’t know about a place, don’t just base your opinion on what the media says or popular opinion, go there and see for yourself😁
Also, the absolute number one thing I hate about Chicago is that when summer comes everyone is super hyper and driving fast and just so excited and an LA it’s always hot Arizona it’s always hot so it’s always chill in LA and like in Chicago people just act so hyper in the summer and it’s just annoyingbecause they’re just too excited
"oh i live right downtown in chicago, im not fending for my life when i walk outside my door," Oh Thats why lol Going anywhere on the SOUTH SIDE near past 79 dan ryan "GOOD LUCK" im almost certain shes not no where near K town lol
I live in the south Chicago neighborhood. South side of the city. And no crime is not out of control. Depending on your news intake...they would have you believe that the city is literally Gotham city. It's not. Does crime happen? Yes. Does crime happen anywhere in the country with more than 2 human living there?...yes. it's not just chicago. The media has done my city a huge disservice
Who doesn’t like spring ???!!!!!!! Sorry but reason #4 is the only valid reason. Maybe #5 now a days but like how another commenter said it’s very location dependent. And how you said. Crime happens everywhere, using common sense will help you avoid unnecessary situations
Also you’re in the city. Of course there’s going to be traffic. There’s traffic in all major cities. From 11am - 2:30pm & 6:30pm - 7am there is no traffic on the highway. Normal work and school hours affect traffic like any other state
I mean, if it's not as bad as my city (Albuquerque) where ppl are sitting outside of my bank on the heaviest traffic street shooting up heroin and smoking crack, I think you're good. Who gaf if ppl are smoking weed in public, I don't want to see ppl stick a needle in their arm in front of my kid...
I’m so excited because my daughter is going to the university of Chicago and she got into Duke and NYU and being from Mississippi it’s really hard to not be afraid of big cities. If all you see is news headlines but your videos did help me so much!!!! I was like doesn’t Duke seem nice 😊But in all honesty she was in Washington DC across from the national cathedral before moving 6 days ago and she is finding Hyde Park more intense so far. More people coming up to her and following her I hope it gets better. But we are looking at Birdie alarms and Mace 😬😱
I just graduated from Duke and its stunning, but UChicago is also really nice (they rejected me lmao). I feel like both schools have that cool gothic feel. Im working in Chicago now and will be down there to participate in their orchestra though!

This is the best comment I’ve seen on this video!
100%. I have nothing against Caira but her channel caters to the oblivious northsiders and tourists who live in a bubble.

The crime is completely overblown as a transplant myself. In the same breath, just like any other place - f around and find out.

The crime conversation is almost always people trying to be racist and being shocked you aren’t giving in and being racist too lol
It has nothing to do with racism. Crime is crime, regardless of who is committing it. Your arguments makes absolutely zero sense.
Nailed it.

According to Google, Chicago isn't even in the top 20 most dangerous cities.

i FEEL you about Chicago food! I recently moved to Phoenix and people rave about the food and I'm like....really? Chicago has spoiled me forever.
Having lived in Phoenix for 22 years, I can't believe people are raving about the food here lol. Chicago seems like such an awesome place.
I lived in NYC for 11 years and never had an issue with crime
Thank you for this. You’ve put my mind at ease about moving to Chicago in January
Great job on this Caira! I agree with your five points; especially the last one, the way some people talk about Chicago you’d think we live like that movie The Purge. Chicago is my favourite city in the states....I've been there 3 times and can't wait to go back....I love your content and I've subscribed 😊

I love this video!! I can agree with all your points, as well as the defenses 😂
I want to move to Chicago so bad. Financially, I'm not ready, but god it is such an awesome place.
Don't do it. It's such an overrated place. It's not as unsafe as people say but the people here suck. And it's overpriced.
Idk the segregation that is the worst here than any every other US city would be my no. 1 point
What are the best insurance companies to work for in the city?

Does crime happen anywhere in the country with more than 2 human living there?...yes. it's not just chicago. The media has done my city a huge disservice
Could not agree more!
I went to Italy and said a few times, "Italian food in Chicago is so much better." 😂Chicago food spoiled me.
Normal work and school hours affect traffic like any other state
Stay out of the hood and crime won't be a problem.
I felt very uncomfortable and overwhelmed there
I don’t think the weather counts as a specific to the city 😂
I mean, if it's not as bad as my city (Albuquerque) where ppl are sitting outside of my bank on the heaviest traffic street shooting up heroin and smoking crack, I think you're good. Who gaf if ppl are smoking weed in public, I don't want to see ppl stick a needle in their arm in front of my kid...
Saving to my watch later and I am from Chicago
Hi from Lincoln Square. Come on, Caira, you've lived here long enough to know we have only two seasons--winter and road construction😄
Restaurants very expensive.
Sorry.I am sick,
Loved there 7 yrs, too much crime !
🤩🧡
You look like Ate Lea in Malindo Kl Malaysia,
Lmao calm down!! Chicago/Illinois is bankrupt!! Love the city but unlivable place
I agree with you about the food, 💋🤌 chefs kiss. Superb, Chicago gets it right with the food. I was never disappointed.
