I loved your transparency. I current live alone 3 hours away from close family. I have recently begin planning to move to Chicago which will be even further away from family. But from living alone I have rediscovered my identity separate from the expectations that can often be placed on us heavily when living near or with family. I will say that living alone has encouraged me to be there for myself emotionally and mentally, that real self love lol. I feel that building a community of support in an unfamiliar city takes times but it's so possible when we intentionally place ourselves in places and spaces doing the things we love. Shall you attract your soul tribe in Chicago soon!✨☺.

That separation from expectations from others is definitely necessary. I decided to give myself grace during this time of building community. I’m wishing you peace and joy during this transition into Chicago! We got this! Thank you for sharing🫶🏾

I feel you on everything girl! I too have lived in Atlanta but for 7 years. I left in 2022 and moved back to where I was born, New Jersey. But I've always contemplated did I make the right move because Chicago is where I've always wanted to be. So idk but I might be making that move next year to Chicago!! But you were def spot on with living alone and the benefits and lows about it. I know exactly what you are going through or did go through. Making friends and good friends at that takes time. It's so much harder as an adult. But thanks for posting this relatable video!!
And yes Atlanta is just as bad as Chicago lol it's just not as big of news. All the car break ins, sex trafficking, you name it. Every city has its big problems.

    Hey Olivia!
I am planning on moving from Dallas to Chicago in a couple of months, I’ve also lived in Atlanta as well 😊 so I definitely feel EVERYTHING you spoke about. And I too go back and forth about my decision to stay in my familiar surroundings or to step out of my comfort zone ……now I have lived in Chicago before but it was several years ago and I’m not even the same person I was then, and I don’t have many friends there so I’d be starting all over which is scary.
    Thanks for sharing.

You're talking truth sis!!! First gen Guyanese Jamaican American and graduating college soon and i want to move to chicago. Parents were super skeptical to the idea and want me to have every single step planned out to a T but i always have to remind them that uncertainty and downs is part of the plan and I'm okay with that. Still trying to convince them lol

Caribbean parents LOVE to tell you how to operate. you just have to lean into faith that everything will all work out. My parents were just nervous about Chicago and the violence but I think because i built that trust with my parents that I will be good because I always figure it out, they knew I was going to be okay. Regardless, I recommend taking them to a trip to chicago and just jumping in head-first if you are ready for that transition. Good luck!

Since u been there awhile, what neighborhoods are safe & welcoming? I visited the north side a few years ago & felt like I was on an island of one if u get my drift 😂.

I don't know how I got to your channel but I enjoyed listening to your self-realizations and reflections. My niece has to move to Chicago for work. She was told to move to the West Loop, but from looking online it seems snobbish. What neighborhoods would you recommend that are welcoming (diverse)?

Hyde Park and Bronzeville (South Chicago) are nice, Black neighborhoods that are predominantly Black. I have a friend in Uptown and another in Boys Town/Lakeview (North Chicago) that are more diverse neighborhoods but are pretty welcoming for the most part. As far housing- all four neighborhoods have a nice mix of decent to really nice housing. If she wants luxury/top-of-the-line, then downtown area (South Loop, West Loop, Gold Coast, Streeterville, River North) is her best bet.

hahaha! I just moved from the west loop and that was where I was living when i made this video. it was an AMAZING start in Chicago because it is very safe in comparison to other parts, it has access to so many things to do and near all the other neighborhoods, and its near the highway (if she drives). Yes it is a bit bougie but I find people are more eager to make friends in that neighborhood. It is not as snobbish as I thought it would be.
