- This is the original recording of "Alice" by New World produced by Mickie Most. Several years later he re-recorded it with Smokie achieving international success. Although it inexplicably didn't chart for New World in the UK it reached #20 in Australia in 1973.

First time I am hearing the original and I love it. No idea why it didn’t do well as it’s fantastic.

I always loved Smokies's version and some years ago I discovered it's only a cover. But it's this day I first listented to original and it's fucking amazing!

Gosh! I have almost forgotten the New World! This is one of the first English songs that I have listened to when I was a very young boy! I wish them healthy and well!

Originals as ive always said are without any fail or doubt guaranteed many times over 💯 the Best.
No matter in and through time no remakes wont ever give what the Originals give.

I first heard the Smokie version long ago and only recently found out they wasnt the original singer. Honestly Smokie doesnt change much so I like both.
I like the acoustic guitar and violin sound in this original song. Composers and arrangers are really great.

IMHO - best version ever!
Met these great guys 'back then'. My best mate's future wife had an epilectic fit when we went ot one of their concerts. I took them both home. When I arrived back at the concert venue, the guys asked me how my mate's girlfriend was - such great days.
Smokie did a great version too - but for me, New World were the Dog's B8llocks! :-)

This is really good recording and credit has to be given for it being the original, but it was the record buying public that made this song such a hit for Smokie.
Smokie had already had a number of hits by the time they released this (1976) - so they already had an army of fans ready to buy whatever they recorded. New World were fairly unknown in the UK in 1972 so the song had to sell on its own merits. I do like the Smokie version but the New World version deserves to be heard and remembered.

@@EricIrl Incorrect. New World had hits with "Rose Garden", "Tom Tom Turnaround", "Kara Kara", and "Sister Jane" in the UK during 1971/2. This song was a hit in their native Australia, it just reached No.50. The follow-up "Rooftop Singing" only made No.50 in the UK after the band were embroiled in a payola scandal and then their chart career was pretty much over.

If you talk to anybody of my age who was listening to chart music in 1971/72, most would not remember New World now. Even back when Smokie released "Living Next Door to Alice" I knew somebody had released it a few years earlier but for the life of me, I couldn't remember who it was. It took until the internet arrived before I could track down the original group. I prefer the New World version. They deserve better recognition.

Always thought this song sounded a lot like "Sylvia's Mother" in theme and chords, this version really shows it.

Ken Bruce's 'Pop Master' brought me here. Like most, I thought Smokie's version to be the original. It's hard to compare though, having heard the Smokie version countless times and this version for the first time today. I think the version of a song people generally like best tends to be the first one they become familiar with. I can't agree with the comment that the original is always the best though; there are a some (though not many) cover versions superior to originals in my opinion.

I remember when the New World version came out. I thought instant number one. The reason it didn't was because New World were caught up in the payola scandal (paying Radio 1 DJ's to play songs). Consequently the BBC went the other way and didn't play the song and it was lost until Smokie brought it out.
I always wondered why this song did not kick ass like it should have.

This video's an education, I didn't realise The New World had originally recorded this Smokie classic, although I did realise it was a Chinn/ Chapman track as was typical throughout the 70's.

I never knew until today that New World recorded this song before Smokie I still have this song by Smokie on vinyl, no disrespect but I prefer the song by Smokie.

Got up close and personnal with John Lee in 1971 and he didnt dissappoint.
This is probably the best version, I only knew the Smokie one before, I thought that was original, plus many Polish and Czech covers, because it just somehow became really popular in my area.

Why are we comparing groups ? Clearly Smokie likes this song and put their soul into making a cover. So glad I found this out as I live Smokie and thought this was one of their originals. I checked other songs and was surprised They wrote them but not Alice haha. Same with Erasure from UK another wonderful bit but their only number one was an ABBA cover lol.
All of Smokie's hits were written by Chinn & Chapman up until 1978 when "Mexican Girl" became their first hit written by themselves, but they also hit with a 60's song "Needles And Pins" which was originally by The Searchers.

On hearing this original, I do remember hearing it early on, but it was overtaken by the Smokey cover along with their many other chart hits.

He payola scandal also had a detrimental effect on record sales for Dorothy Squires music. All were exonerated in the end but the damage was already done. Mud unfortunately sticks.
