There he comes face to face with the men on death row to find out what it’s like to live under the looming shadow of their final day.
On this first part we meet an inmate that was able to escape the death row, see the prison barber shop where prisoners have a rare glimpse of normal life, and we meet a bright young man in death row due to a grave mistake he made at 13.

Some X row prisoners do NOT stay out of trouble, they spit and fling shit/piss at anybody they can... among other 'trouble' they can think up, setting fire to their mattress or books etc. constant, constant complaints about the smallest grievances, they have nothing else to do...we were only introduced to the best behaved here, for whatever reasons

He killed two people but children dont have these thoughts typically, he needed an insanity plea, intense therapy, etc. We need to stop putting those who commit crimes in prison for lifetimes, and actually try to reform them. Obviously the child was mentally I'll, he should have had therapy.

Sanford's Story just broke my Heart. 13 years old, he was still a child.

Yep, in the follow up documentary they did 5 years after Paul McManus talks about this. Paul McManus who was on death row in this documentary for killing his wife and kids was commuted to life in prison and he talks about how he regrets appealing death because living in prison for the rest of his life and thinking about what he did is worse.

damn that man who became a double murderer at 15 just comes across as very intelligent , articulate , gentle , positive , mentally in harmony despite his situation .. I definitely feel he might have a chance on the outside at making it if given the chance.. what he did was horrendous , I have no idea how he grew up and what brought him to commit the crime , but none of us are the same as we were at 15.. at 15 you are still essentially a child

He does seem very articulate and it's sad to see him in there wasting away his life when it seems he had so much more potential. I tend to think if you commit a murder as a teen, you'll be worse as an adult. I can't imagine being locked up on death row. Now, I think his partner in crime had more influence since he was older. I feel he would change his life around if given the chance and be a productive member of society.

They got alot of personel time to read and learn. They are in prison. Nothing else to do.
Your parents pay for school and college and we have a time frame on when to start or when to finish however prisoners have A lot of time and free resources , they can repeat free of cost, so yea they should be articulate , at least when they get out ( some of them) they can start over rather than going back where they left off.

It’s hard and shameful for loved ones of the prisoner especially when they’re so young. It’s a life changing event for the victims family. My sibling was murdered by two 16 years olds. I was 18 it messed my mind up that children were the cause of that

It amazes me how articulate and proper these inmates spoke.
I really like the way Sir Trevor McDonald talks with the inmates. He’s so respectful, even though his questions are still tough, and he isn’t trying to provoke them the way Piers Morgan does. Even when Morgan tries to talk with inmates in a conciliatory way, he just can’t seem to help making sure they know their “place.” Sometimes British public personalities use their accents to condescend to people, and McDonald’s accent is definitely just as “plummy” (as they say in the UK) as Morgan’s, but he doesn’t have the detestable antagonistic streak that Morgan does.
Sir Trevor MacDonald is a one of a kind journalist.

I am not American and I have never been in police station or jail in my life, and watching this scared me so much not to commit any crime that will take me to jail . Freedom is life

The brother doing 170 years tugged at my heart a bit. Being so young and doing something so thoughtlessly only to have to think about it for the rest of your adult life would be so tough honestly.
Thats one thing about deathrow, u hardly ever run into someone who says i deserve death, they usually always say they dont want to die, but they sure didnt give that choice to their victims

Wonder what the family members of Sanford’s victims would say about the loss they experienced? I’d like to know how they feel now about the sentence he received. Would they support a forgiving reduction in sentence time or do they want him to die in prison as is his current fate?

This made me truly happy these guys have changed so much... they are so open to telling you what it’s like.
These are living examples of the phrase “There are no bad people, only bad choices.”
You who say this man wanted to rob, I say you are a fool and wrong. For his soul wanted blood, not loot. His thoughts know this too be true but like all weak men, he is charming but that has always been the cleverness of cowards. We know he is weak by his very action of letting the madness take over himself and killing an innocent women. Anytime a weak man talks, know his words are different than his actions and malice is in his every word. For envy, jealousy, etc fill his heart when he sees a man who has risen above these things. Until this man admits why he killed those women, never can this man be trusted. Released, and likely, he kills again.
A bad choice is hitting your father out of anger. A bad choice is not killing two people. This comment section is a prime example of the phrase "being "nice" is easiest moral virtue to fake and the greatest desire to give by weak men, for with it comes an unconscious contract of lying. A contract to allow each individual to live within fantasy land, removed from truth and reality. Better is the man who deals with truth". This is why most are not crying over the dead. For the dead cant fulfil the contract. And a more applicable phrase to the men in this video "Acts of great kindness do not make the narrow souls, who that think blameworthy is all great existence, grateful, but rather vengeful"

What stops others must be ingrained in those who kill. In this case, this man must realize why he killed before he can be released for it was not robbery that he killed.

Sanford should’ve never been put in jail at 13 and sentenced to life without parole at 15! People have done worse as adults and gotten less. No child should be put in prison. That’s what juvenile jail is for. Prison is supposed to be for reform not vengeance. Sanford deserves a second chance at life!
Those people he killed are still just as dead as if Sandford was 53 and it's still not gonna bring them back to life.

Ok, how does that apply to this situation? Sanford isn’t the only person that’s been in jail since their early teens. We need to get justice for these people. The fact is the majority of the people that were put in jail in their early teens were black and/or from poor families shows the disparity in our so called justice system.

170 yrs is over sentencing he should do time no doubt but that sentence is just crazy. I've heard of cases where Ppl have done worse and got a much lesser sentence.
This guy's deserves a chance to prove he is rehabilitated and can live among society. I don't know his records inside prison but it seems to me he could live a very functional healthy life outside.

The story of the man convicted at the age of 13 yrs old got to me. His was the same age as my nephew 😭 I still see him has a baby 😢

I am so saddened that even though two innocent people were killed that a 13 year old, at the time, is thrown away. What does this serve? The system in Norway deals with this in the best possible way in my opinion.

Different states, different laws with regards to juvenile offenders and juveniles that can be tried as adults. Each state is different. If they committed federal crimes, the process is the same regardless of state.

Not saying he shouldn't, but imagine seeing the world today when the last image you have of the outside is the 70s? I wasn't even born then, the pictures I see from the time look semi-alien. How on earth is he going to cope? I make fun of my mum who was a kid in the seventies and she can't get her mobile to work normally, how's he gonna react? Maybe some sort of midway house, facility to help him, bit alone, I don't know if he'd manage, especially if he hasn't got family to help him with the cultural shock.

Very interesting documentary series. I enjoyed Sir Trevor's manner with others; I am impressed by the respectful way he treated every person there. Each person was a human being regardless of their status within the prison itself. He could teach many people a thing or two about how to treat others.
These are some interesting charachters, expecially Sanford, he seems to be so intelligent and articulate, I think the State should give him another chance, I mean he's been in prison sicne he was 15!

That young boy would of never been put in a adult prison in Florida nor would of been charged as a adult definetly not with that much time let that young man out of their set him free

Convicting a child to 170 years in prison is definitely cruel and unusual punishment, considering it's only a kid. Prison system is a monopoly that has the government in their pockets.

Similar sentiment from what that guy said near the end, I have been against the death penalty. Two reasons really. First is like he said, people preach how killing is wrong, yet you're about to strap a man to a table and murder him. Yeah he murdered but killing him will not bring his victims back from the grave. And my second reason is death is too good for them. It is far more painful to be alive.
I looked up one of the inmates on death row, Wayne Kubsch and he was convicted of murdering his ex wife, her husband and their 10 year old child. His sentence was commuted to life without parole.
What is it with the name "Wayne" that is so often associated with multiple murders?

This hurts to watch. Imagine being locked away since you were 13 or 15 years old. All the stuff he mentioned. Never driven a car, never been on an airplane, never travelled. All these stories hurt.

I truly feel for the man who went in so young..... I feel just as much for the family of those murdered:(. What a terrible tragic situation... his mistake was huge and he has thought on it his whole life.... what a sad sad sad situation.. this one will sit with me.
