Great update Jimmy! You've one of the most chill communities out there. GGK's A Brightness Long Ago, Robin Hobb's Fool's Errand and Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove have been my favourite books of the year so far. Not been reading as much novels as I've been getting back into comics and focusing more on my weight loss journey which I'm happy to report I've been making great progress (lost over 30 pounds so far this year). As for reading plans, I'll read whatever the f*** I want when I want.
Just read Wolf Hall my man! I was so happy when you had it on your TBR. It has the best opening sentence of any book in the world. So now get up! Just read the first page. Hilary Mantel deserved all of her awards and then some.
Im glad you discovered Julian May! Once you’ve finished the Pliocene Exiles Saga you should definitely go on to the Galactic Milieu series. It comprises of four novels. Intervention which introduces the emergence of metapsychic powers on Earth and covers the events leading up to Earth joining the Galactic Milieu, followed by the three books of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy - Jack the Bodiless, Diamond Mask and Magnificat. Central to the series are the the concepts of metapsychic power, galactic politics and the societal impacts of interstellar integration.

I don’t consider myself less of a fantasy reader, despite this fact and neither do I you. I wish you all the best for the next five months!!
Hi Jimmy. Your reading universe sounds wide and rich. 2024 has been hampered by personal and family illness so not as many books. Favorites include Don Quixote, The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf and A Game of Thrones by GRRM. Conditions permitting I'd like to tackle Hyperion by Dan Simmons and The Tale of Genji. Happy reading.
The Failures is also on my radar, I think it popped up as a recommendation on Goodreads (one of the few times this function has been useful in years.) William Gibson, surprisingly, is one of the most under-talked prose stylists out there though I would say his real style only kicks in after Neuromancer. It reminds me most of James Elroy's 90 output where it's extremely brief, intentionally choppy, with slang etc. put in even third person description and similarly can be tough to wrap your head around at times. i.e. in his novel Count Zero, he introduces one of the main characters, has him blown up by a drone, then rebuilt over months in about 7 pages. All of the books you talked about sound really interesting. The only thing I can suggest to salvage the Kushiel's Dart vlog is to do some sprints around the house then grab the camera and re-record before you can fully catch your breath so you can capture the off the cuff energy of reacting for the first time.
Well look at that, I'm gonna be reading Moon Witch, Spider King myself this upcoming month. I hope you and Brian have fun with that. Also The Failures sounds really cool, I'm adding that to the ever expanding TBR. Sounds like the type of unique fantasy I'm often looking for. Keep up the good work Jimmy!

My book of the last year would already be like 4th or 5th this year. Most looking forward to well....Stormlight 5, but also should be starting Gormenghast and Prince of Nothing, pretty excited and kinda worried for both. I also am allegedly going to read Heroes Die
@@thefantasynuttwork Well now if you go and dislike Never Let Me Go it will make me more tempted to try the Ishiguro books you liked, and we can not be enemies.

Always pumped to see a video out from you, Jimmy!! Excited to hear your thoughts on the rest of Last King! For me, a huge highlight this year has been reading Memory, Sorrow and Thorn and also The Heart Of What Was Lost which had no right being as good as it was. Also, I'm 200 pages into The Witchwood Crown and that shit is amazing for real, somehow a step up in every way and I loved all that came before. The scene where Snenneq smashes that northerner's hand with two mugs was lit. Some other 10/10 books this year: The Terror by Dan Simmons Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Crime And Punishment by Dostoevsky
I think an underrated part of these new Osten Ard books is how Williams describes his smaller scale fights. The specific moves etc. people do feel plausible, fit the character, but also can be pretty cool even if they don't last 100 pages.
It’s been a while for me … Glad to see and hear that everything is going well. I look forward to reconnecting with Friday’s Chatting with Nutts and I am definitely going to backtrack and look for that Murphy episode 🤓 May God continue to bless you Jimmy.
CWN fridays are as exciting as christmas mornings, and the first seems to happen as frequently as the latter lmao. Just kidding, but would be awesome if, in the future, you could make CWN every week 😅. Thanks for the video. It was great as always
I'm a huge fan of you doing whatever lights you up, so whether it's vlogs or lit fic or taking a break to recharge or making 15 videos a month, I'm excited for whatever you enjoy making! Bummed about your Kushiel's Dart footage having issues--ugh!! What a pain. :( But still excited to hear your thoughts! It ended up being quite an unexpected gem for me! (Finished it last week, myself.) Back half of the year is going to be polishing off as many series as I can, possibly starting Malazan, but also giving myself the luxury of playing some video games (Baldur's Gate, perhaps?) since both my kids will be in school for the first time and I will suddenly have freedom of time and headspace I haven't had in years. Huzzah! Should be great. :)
The Dark Star series is absolutely fantastic. I think it is worth the challenge of reading and is meant to be reread. It is refreshing to see a “ literary” author take fantasy seriously and push the boundaries of the form , giving us a work worthy of literary appreciation. The second book in particular is a lot more difficult than the first but also more emotionally rewarding if you stick with it. Marlon James has really done something special here.
Heroes Die! I haven't recommended that many things to you so far, but my track record still is at 100%, I believe. But what if you don't like it? The pressure!!
Hey man. I have not watched this video, but just popped over here after starting the Lost in Roshar Podcast where you were not the co-host. I want to express to you that I found a lot of value in several of your comments reading through Stormlight again. The things you noticed about the writing are generally not typically points expressed. I think your lack of ability to visualize makes you notice certain aspects of the literary structure that I personally do not see. The things that “pull you out” of the stories are legitimate criticisms, but I never thought too much about. This kind of commentary that you made really helped me develop my eye for literature and my mind for writing in a noticeable way. I just want to thank you for your work and I hope you get to continue producing the content you enjoy.
Sadly I can never catch an episode of CWN live, I don't comment much on your vids (I spend more time questioning myself, wondering if my comment would be relevant than actually saying something, I'm dumb like that), yet you're the only RUclipsr whom I follow with consistency over the years, eagerly awaiting your next video. Your channel is a remarkable achievement. I'm just a bit sad there was no update regarding Dudes Talking Manga, though. Hope the phoenix will rise again sometime soon.
Name doesn’t matter at all, to me anyways. It’s great to see you so excited about those books, makes me wanna try Anathem again. I DNF it years ago. I was one of the ones eager for your KD vlog, but stuff happens. I’ll be happy with your thoughts in a wrap up. Would love more videos every month, but only as long as you’re up for it. I agree, don’t make it so you feel a bunch of pressure. We all love you and will happily watch whatever you make, whenever you release it. Take care!
Man. I don't think I've ever thought about being jealous of booktubers until recently. I am so jealous of all of you who got an ARC of Mercy of the Gods. I did pre-order it, so I'll get it Aug 6th or whatever. But damn. I wish i could read it now. I love Daniel Abraham, and the Expanse is one of my all-time favorites. My most anticipated book besides that one is obviously Stormlight 5. I get to go to Dragonsteel for the 2nd time this year. I went to the first one in 2021 when we were still under covid restrictions. This one is gonna be totally different.
Dang I really gotta try some Tad Williams, sounds super fun. I started a bunch of great series at the beginning of the year: Dandelion Dynasty, Realm of the Elderlings, Empire of the Wolf, Earthsea, but then got sidetracked a bit with going back to school and taking some literature classes, which were fun, but I'm excited to get back to some fantasy soon. Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi is what I'm most excited to read, then I'd like to get back to continuing on with book 2's in some of those series.
hello jimmy i've been here ever since the first berserk video and watched all the one piece discussions and reviews even the horrendous cans taste video with andrew and i have to say you're one of the best when it comes to reviewing mangas , glad i discovered your channel. i have a webnovel suggestions it's called "Lord of The Mysteries" by cuttlefish , the basic premise is an isekai to a steampunk london kinda vibes world filled with lovecraftian horrors. The power system is literally the best i've seen in fiction and the psychological journey is topnotch. lot of interesting characters especially the antagonists with the overarching theme of the novel being madness (like the concept of struggle in berserk) and the search of the self. good luck in your future projects and remember to have fun
Love your channel Jimmy. Keep up the fantasy and Stephen King reading (selfishly I don’t read sci/fy) so don’t feel bad about your main focus. I always enjoy your videos and all things GRRM!!!❤️😎
WOOO!! I’m so excited to see you started Neuromancer! That book is so cool and interesting. I’m so excited to hear your thoughts on it! You’ll certainly enjoy it, I think!
I also tell you this constantly Jimmy, but you underestimate yourself. Show yourself some more kindness. Admittedly, that is hard for me to do as well, but you got a good thing here. :)
I read the last eight books of Realm/Elderlings between Jan-July. I was trying to space them out, but didn't turn out that way. Read Streets of Laredo and Dead Man's Walk this year (loved them both, just about as great as Lonesome Dove) Now I'm starting Faithful and the Fallen to get myself hyped for Fury of the Gods (so far Bloodsworn 1 and 2 are the only Gwynne under my belt).
really hope you'll manage to try Heroes Die sooner rather than later. i've been super surprised by how ridiculously awesome this book is. the MC gave me some very strong vibes of Logen Ninefingers
I recently did a tally of all the books I have on my shelf I haven't read and decided not to buy another book until I finish them or DNF them. I gladly report that I went for 2 whole weeks before buying a book😅
I read The Failures and those comparisons are definitely apt but especially Dark Tower. It's heavy on worldbuilding and weird. I think it does so sometimes at the expense of plot and characters but I'm still thinking about it
Love the video. Very interested in your thoughts whenever you get to Neuromancer. I read it earlier this year. Especially as a tech person. And of course you are perma-tagged in anything I create tag-wise, so if you need a something to do that's easy, nightclub tag it up!
I finished the realm of the elderlings at the beginning of this year. It was amazing!! So amazing that nothing I’ve picked up since is keeping my attention. Anyone’s recommendations are appreciated.
That's quite the list of big names for a potential TBR! Heroes Die is great. Looking forward to your take on Kushiel's Dart, also, sucks to hear you won't be able to do a vlog on it but I'll take the wrap up mention, ha. For what it's worth, I don't think it really matters what your channel name is, if you squint hard enough pretty much anything can be called fantasy.
Strongly recommend In Ascension by Martin McInnes. Just won the Clarke award. Longlisted for the booker award. TBH i enjoyed it more than the winner, Prophet Song
Neuromancer is so good! I hope you like it. Wind and Truth better be good🥲. The second half of 2024 is gonna be awesome. I have 12 Glen Cook novels left and I will be done with his bibliography. The Starfishers trilogy has started off great and I might read book two and three this weekend. I'm looking forward to the rest of 2024!
Jimmy, I love the channel just recently subscribed. Failures sounds fascinating. I love William Gibsons books just read the Peripheral. Great book. Please do yourself a favor and read COUNT ZERO and Mona Lisa Overdrive (Sprawl series) after Nueromancer
A series I’d recommend if your looking for a more fresh fantasy is Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Tyrant Philosophers (City of last chances being the first). It has demons, gods, politics and really imaginative worldbuilding. I’m on the second book and it’s just very different from your traditional fantasy storytelling and my favourite of his works.
Anathem is definitely somewhere in my queue for this year. I’ve started the first few pages before but it seemed like a lot. Need to wait for the moment I feel I can get past that initial activation energy. I shall wait for you to thumbs up or thumbs down The Liars as if you were Commodus in Gladiator before considering it.
Sounds like multiple trips to Florida are coming to visit a certain Latin and Roman expert for CWN LIVE! Not reading as much as I'd like, but Cloud Atlas just popped up as available on audio from the library, so I'm going to listen to that based on your opinion of it. Have a great end to July!
I overdosed on fantasy years ago and now like to mix it up with sci-fi, mystery, classics. Yet I still consider myself a fantasy reader. Looking forward to your opinion on those 3 books you mentioned as they sound like things I would like. P.S. I must be the only one who doesn't care about the next Sanderson book, which might change once I get around to reading Way of Kings. Or might not. 😊
Heu Jimmy, I know we haven't really interacted much before outside me leaving a couple comments, but I'm planning on read Ash: A Secret History this year as well and I was wondering maybe we could do a buddy read / discussion on one of our channels for it in November in December. I think it would be a cool way to drum up interest in Mary Gentle's work, who by all accounts is an unsung hero of weird fiction! No biggie if you're not up for it though, just keep doin what you're doin! Love the channel.
@@thefantasynuttwork lol just saw all the typos in my comment, I was writing it out quickly before I had to rush to work. Anyway, great! Let's link up when you reckon you're ready to give it a read, I'm very excited for it.
Mood reading can be hit or miss. Did read some McMaster-Bujold and really liked them. Currently reading David Keck that was on APs shelf on some older videos. Liking those as well - Arthur vibes with tournaments and haunted kingdoms. Neuromancer might be a little dated but he should be getting royalties for the Matrix movies. Have read Stephenson and Anathem is on my shelf. He can be a good qritwr but can get too cute and self-indulgent at times.
My top 2 from the first half are Fool’s Fate and Lonesome Dove. I would love to get to Anathem, Bone Clocks, and House of Suns. Definitely will continue RotE, Dresden, Dandelion Dynasty, Sun Eater, and Faithful and the Fallen. Then of course Wind and Truth. Just curious if you’re still slow reading 1Q84? I miss your reviews! And I dream of any kind of all time top 10, haha.
How channels can be dedicated to one genre only beats me 🤷🏻♂️. I stick to about 40% fantasy, and it looks like you are reading plenty to still consider yourself Fantasy 🤙
In the end, if you are reader, do you ever stick to a single genre? I don't think so. We are readers. We do have favorites genres for sure. Fantasy is my favorite, but I read everything. Granted, I think I have been a reader longer than you as it is a newer hobby for you.
We miss you in the One Piece community ❤

Also, I'm 200 pages into The Witchwood Crown and that shit is amazing for real, somehow a step up in every way and I loved all that came before. The scene where Snenneq smashes that northerner's hand with two mugs was lit. Some other 10/10 books this year:
The Terror by Dan Simmons
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
Crime And Punishment by Dostoevsky
I think an underrated part of these new Osten Ard books is how Williams describes his smaller scale fights. The specific moves etc. people do feel plausible, fit the character, but also can be pretty cool even if they don't last 100 pages.
This is music to my ears
It’s been a while for me … Glad to see and hear that everything is going well. I look forward to reconnecting with Friday’s Chatting with Nutts and I am definitely going to backtrack and look for that Murphy episode 🤓 May God continue to bless you Jimmy.
Same to you!
u r one of my fav booktubers around! so 6 videos a month would be A-MAZING
Thank you 😊
Last King of Osten Ard only gets better as it goes my guy

Such exciting times ahead, in brave new worlds!
Currently reading Parable of the Talents. Butler is incredible.
Much love!
She’s one of the best
CWN fridays are as exciting as christmas mornings, and the first seems to happen as frequently as the latter lmao. Just kidding, but would be awesome if, in the future, you could make CWN every week 😅.
Thanks for the video. It was great as always
Thank you so much!
(Finished it last week, myself.)
Back half of the year is going to be polishing off as many series as I can, possibly starting Malazan, but also giving myself the luxury of playing some video games (Baldur's Gate, perhaps?) since both my kids will be in school for the first time and I will suddenly have freedom of time and headspace I haven't had in years. Huzzah! Should be great. :)
Baldurs Gate is soooooooooo good!
@@pranavroh couldn’t agree more
Can't wait to see what you think of Neuromancy
@@akashas6012 finished today, great book!
Heroes Die! I haven't recommended that many things to you so far, but my track record still is at 100%, I believe. But what if you don't like it? The pressure!!
UNDER PRESSSSSURE
@@anomalythemillennial304 thank you so much! This was super kind of you
Sadly I can never catch an episode of CWN live, I don't comment much on your vids (I spend more time questioning myself, wondering if my comment would be relevant than actually saying something, I'm dumb like that), yet you're the only RUclipsr whom I follow with consistency over the years, eagerly awaiting your next video.
Your channel is a remarkable achievement.
I'm just a bit sad there was no update regarding Dudes Talking Manga, though. Hope the phoenix will rise again sometime soon.
@@C.S.Brulevent thank you so much for being here!
Take care!
That’s so kind of you!
@@akellerhouse83 I hope you have a great time!
I'd never heard of The Failures either. Sounds very interesting.
@@ericF-17 hopefully it’s good
Dang I really gotta try some Tad Williams, sounds super fun.
All of those series are good!
hello jimmy i've been here ever since the first berserk video and watched all the one piece discussions and reviews even the horrendous cans taste video with andrew and i have to say you're one of the best when it comes to reviewing mangas , glad i discovered your channel.
i have a webnovel suggestions it's called "Lord of The Mysteries" by cuttlefish , the basic premise is an isekai to a steampunk london kinda vibes world filled with lovecraftian horrors. The power system is literally the best i've seen in fiction and the psychological journey is topnotch. lot of interesting characters especially the antagonists with the overarching theme of the novel being madness (like the concept of struggle in berserk) and the search of the self.
good luck in your future projects and remember to have fun
Thank you so much, that’s so nice of you! And I’ll check out that recommendation
Love your channel Jimmy. Keep up the fantasy and Stephen King reading (selfishly I don’t read sci/fy) so don’t feel bad about your main focus. I always enjoy your videos and all things GRRM!!!❤️😎
Thanks so much!
WOOO!! I’m so excited to see you started Neuromancer! That book is so cool and interesting. I’m so excited to hear your thoughts on it! You’ll certainly enjoy it, I think!
I hope so too!
I also tell you this constantly Jimmy, but you underestimate yourself. Show yourself some more kindness. Admittedly, that is hard for me to do as well, but you got a good thing here. :)
Thanks brotha
I read the last eight books of Realm/Elderlings between Jan-July. I was trying to space them out, but didn't turn out that way.
Read Streets of Laredo and Dead Man's Walk this year (loved them both, just about as great as Lonesome Dove)
Now I'm starting Faithful and the Fallen to get myself hyped for Fury of the Gods (so far Bloodsworn 1 and 2 are the only Gwynne under my belt).
Bangers!
We making it out our mid year funk with this one!!
Get your ass to location 10
really hope you'll manage to try Heroes Die sooner rather than later. i've been super surprised by how ridiculously awesome this book is. the MC gave me some very strong vibes of Logen Ninefingers
Love to hear that
I recently did a tally of all the books I have on my shelf I haven't read and decided not to buy another book until I finish them or DNF them.
I gladly report that I went for 2 whole weeks before buying a book😅
That’s impressive to me hahah
The narrative of Frederick Douglass 👍🏼
@@akashas6012 amazing book
I read The Failures and those comparisons are definitely apt but especially Dark Tower. It's heavy on worldbuilding and weird. I think it does so sometimes at the expense of plot and characters but I'm still thinking about it
This pleases me to hear
Love the video. Very interested in your thoughts whenever you get to Neuromancer. I read it earlier this year. Especially as a tech person. And of course you are perma-tagged in anything I create tag-wise, so if you need a something to do that's easy, nightclub tag it up!
The prose of Neuromancer is so stinking good
I am very interested to hear you talk about The Failures. I never heard of it before. Mary Gentle's Ash is also on my list but it is sooooo big.
The size of the series is a bit daunting
💚
I finished the realm of the elderlings at the beginning of this year. It was amazing!! So amazing that nothing I’ve picked up since is keeping my attention. Anyone’s recommendations are appreciated.
@@netta2themax967 it was a long time before I got another series going that I was as into
I hope you enjoy Heroes Die. That book is just insane. So much fun
It’s going to rock I bet!
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels and trust me, I squint a lot
Hey I'm reading The Failures right now!
Nice!!
Strongly recommend In Ascension by Martin McInnes. Just won the Clarke award. Longlisted for the booker award. TBH i enjoyed it more than the winner, Prophet Song
I read it earlier this year and loved it!
Let’s get it!
Jimmy, I love the channel just recently subscribed. Failures sounds fascinating. I love William Gibsons books just read the Peripheral. Great book. Please do yourself a favor and read COUNT ZERO and Mona Lisa Overdrive (Sprawl series) after Nueromancer
Welcome! I’ll write those down
@@thefantasynuttwork thanks man. Love the content and positive vibes.
I’ve heard it’s very good!

@@adamborst have fun!
Halfway through Anathem right now and it's fine.
hahah hopefully I love it
I overdosed on fantasy years ago and now like to mix it up with sci-fi, mystery, classics.

I think that’s certainly something we could do!

Hahahahah thank you bro
Neuromancer's sequels are underrated.
Good to knowN
Waiting for ya to revisit the Culture again!
It’s been on my mind lately
Mood reading can be hit or miss. Did read some McMaster-Bujold and really liked them. Currently reading David Keck that was on APs shelf on some older videos. Liking those as well - Arthur vibes with tournaments and haunted kingdoms.
Neuromancer might be a little dated but he should be getting royalties for the Matrix movies.
Have read Stephenson and Anathem is on my shelf. He can be a good qritwr but can get too cute and self-indulgent at times.
Gibsons writing is very enjoyable for me so far
My top 2 from the first half are Fool’s Fate and Lonesome Dove. I would love to get to Anathem, Bone Clocks, and House of Suns. Definitely will continue RotE, Dresden, Dandelion Dynasty, Sun Eater, and Faithful and the Fallen. Then of course Wind and Truth. Just curious if you’re still slow reading 1Q84? I miss your reviews! And I dream of any kind of all time top 10, haha.
I a still reading it, yup! Just really inconsistently 😫
