Your podcast has been an eye-opener for me on the personality of Trump,I had never thought of this untill you put it into words.I had always a question in the reassess of my brain ,I thought I was crazy because most of thoes who surrounded me are die hard supporters of Trump.I felt like the black sheep.Thank you for validating that I was not wrong.....So I had changed my mind just in time.......
When Sam said, "...Bronzer, or whatever conspires to make him that color..."
I was 1st stopped at a red light with the windows down in Asbury Park, New Jersey and I was laughing so hard I didn't notice the light turn green and I got beeped at by a, and this is true, by a big raised red pickup truck with trump stickers. It really made my day. Thank you both. And Andrew I've watched you on CSPAN since 2nd term Bill Clinton and remember an episode that had you and Christopher Hitchens in it and you were then and are now, someone with whom I can fundamentally disagree with yet still love to listen to and learn from and think about what you say. That's exactly what we need now, to disagree without hate. Thank you both for a late, but great, pod cast. I'll look for your's.
So in other words, you found the ad hominem attacks made by your ideological hero so laughable that you impeded the progress of your fellow Americans until a Trump supporter caused you to see the light?
Lol I loved that too

These two are extremely out of touch with their expectation that the public could be reasonable about politics. The average person has never been smart or informed enough to justify their political stances, and even intelligent people often just engage in motivated reasoning.
One of the traits of TDS is the ability to ignore reality.
@@laurielee4795 as a psychologist who has administered 1000s of IQ tests I can tell you the psychometric IQ is not the main problem here. My dad has an IQ that is at the 99.5 percentile and he voted for trump twice. I think it has more to do with personality, tribalism, critical thinking skills, education, and intelligence. I can say that 72 million people in this country don’t have low IQs. That’s just not how the statistical distribution works. People really like trump and his persuasion techniques and unconventional / “every man” persona really resonates.
@@laurielee4795 I study psychology and there is no way 72 million people in America have lower than average IQs. People who have low IQs are disenfranchised enough as is by both liberals and conservatives. Also, people tend to vote their temperament. If a child is found to be high in trait openness, then they will probably grow up to become a liberal. If the child is higher in orderliness, then they will probably grow up to be a conservative. There is a lot more than IQ that is at play here.
"people dont agree with me because they're not smart" we're all living our own lives with our own problems, goals, and opinions. smart people don't all agree with each other either, and fall into the same traps as everyone else. in some cases they fall into them even worse, having more intelligence to bullshit themselves with along with their natural arrogance.
completely agree, im 18 and no one takes pride in educating themselves about whats going on in the universe. i really hope it'll become fashionable to think about where we are in the universe and where we want to be but i fear thats too hopeful. the people in charge dont even seem to recognise what we need, education on real world issues and open discussion about everything we do. now is always the most crucial point yet, we're accelerating in our development and we need to put thought in how we aim this thing. its funny i never took interest in these things until i came across psychedelics, then i realised these things are quite important, but they're still illegal here and most of my peers still pedal the same stigma their parents taught them, im scared we're approaching the point the will of those in charge to control what we see and think about might really be the death of us. i only pray we wake up before we ruin everything we've built towards, the lack of respect for the legacy we've inherited truly disheartens me.
My favorite episodes are the ones with you and Andrew Sullivan. Your conversations always stay with me.

This sums up the modern day Left in a nutshell
The part where he was comparing trumps lack of positive character traits to the fine tuning of the universe(and what the result of that is), was sooo funny. Sometimes I think sam should be a standup comedian 😂😂😂
Hi Sam. Greetings from Argentina. I've heard you speak of Trump for years and I just don't feel the surprise because your portrayal of him constantly reminds me of Cristina Kirchner. I don't know if you've seen her but she has been operating this way for a long time here.
Great!
I agree that Trump's attacks on our institution of Democracy itself is enough to vote against him. This should be the line in the sand for anyone who cares about this country, and doesn't want it to go down the same route that Russia did when Putin became president for life after their last fair election.
How did he attack the institution of democracy exactly?
It's all so tiring..
Yet so entertaining.
I dig Sam and don’t think I have disagreed with him on any point, accept his hatred of trump. I get his point but he I think he overestimates trumps flaws and underestimated the insanity of the left.
Yep!
His opening remark is in regards to his previous opinions about the left costing an election.
In either case, it's strange to me that many use the argument of "insanity on the (insert political leaning)" as an argument for or against anything. Isn't such just a whistle? A soft announcement of which team you're on so others can more easily back you?
This whole "insanity" on the left is made up narrative.... Statistically its nonsense... How many times in your OWN ACTUAL Life have you encountered this? Have you been cancelled, yelled at by a trans person, been looted by blm, suffered, anyone yell at you for your pronouns, you been attacked by marxist mobs ??? Have you ever actually encounteted any of this in actuality.... In your own life......seriously ...... Or have you been manipulated by the simulacra of hyper-reality into misidentifying the nature of reality..... Vested interests in creating wrestling matches need opposing sides.... Its a joke.... Its celebrities on twitter and twats in portland.... And youre hairs on fire bc you pay attention to that bullshit.....
Interesting... Although our democracy should not be about one person. I do understand the cultish approach that we employ. It is reminiscent of religion where worshipping a single murdered human being is the guarantee to a delicious afterlife, otherwise it is hell fire.
Andrew is wrong that the Hunter Biden story was suppressed by the media. Fox News aired it well, and 72 million Americans were definitely aware of it. Andrew is also spinning here. Won't it be nice if we can have people that can be fully honest?
I would love to see a discussion between Sam Harris and Victor Davis Hanson on Trump.

@34:22 -- Andrew Sullivan says that Trump has gotten into his head and actually caused him to experience clinical depression. That is sincerely troubling. It reminds me of those people who fall in love with a Hollywood actress that is playing a character on television. They end up doing _anything_ they can to gain her attention and try to win her affection.
Andrew Sullivan is impacted by Trump, whom he has never met, to a similar degree as those in love with the Hollywood actress. Should we take seriously anything Sullivan thinks or says with regard to Trump? Is he _really_ a credible source on this topic? Is he even capable of an unbiased perspective given his onset of clinical depression that was seemingly "caused" by Trump's election to the white house?
You are describing 2 different things here. Both can involve extreme amounts of anxiety's and depression but only one involves an extreme amount of fantasizing and delusions of being with a public figure in a positive way, and has a lot to do with self body image. There's quite a bit more to CWS than that though. Actually what he described with Trump contributing to his depression is the complete negation of the criteria for celebrity worship syndrome.
Playing a character on film and being the commander in chief of a force large enough to erase humanity is about the same thing. Sure...
The democratic party needs to ease up on censorship, cancel culture, the 2nd ammendment, and work on making nervous blue collar workers feel more secure about their future. I say this AS A LIBERAL who watched other socially liberal people who end up voting red because of what i listed above.

Completely false, he was one of the first world leaders to shut the border with China but was accused by the media persistently that he was xenophobic and that the covid crisis would have been no big deal.
Not true. Almost 40 countries had imposed travel bans or restrictions to varying degrees before Trump. He also had a two week delay from the announcement to the ban which then caused an influx of way more than normal travel from China to the states before the "ban" went into place. Importantly he also didn't pay heed to other nations with major break outs early on. Italy as a prime example.
That's without even beginning to talk about how horribly he botched the handling of the pandemic inside of the states. Calling it a hoax. Telling everyone not to take it seriously. He blocked testing at every angle. Made states mid against each other for medical resources. Funneled government funds through friends of his. Denied government resources to states with Democratic leadership.
I started following this outbreak more closely back in February and it was so completely frustrating to watch us fuck it all up SO badly.
Just because idiots like Pelosi and the woke morons called him racist for doing it doesn't make this some kind of genius act. It's common sense to close borders to a country overrun by pandemic.
Too bad he didn't follow it up with closing the border to Italy and all the other countries where the pandemic was running wild. That was the obvious first step towards protecting the country, and the beginning of his complete lack of leadership during the crisis.
Instead, he spent hours each day at his briefings spreading misinformation that may have cost thousands of lives. It'll all be over by Easter, folks.

President Obama was certainly presidential--he delivered good speeches, our allies around the world really enjoyed him, and his family and personal life seem entirely wholesome. He also massively cracked down on whistle-blowers, assassinated American citizens abroad, drastically expanded the surveillance state, escalated drone killings where in roughly 90% of the casualties are civilian, I could go on. So, why should I choose someone like that over someone like Trump?
Obama inherited a war started ( understandably) under the Republican son of a Republican President who did start an oil war.
Donald Trump isn't dangerous because he's said racist things, he's dangerous because he's an egomaniac with thinskin, a penchant for lying and not seeing or saying facts.

I love Sam. I've bought everything he has to sell, even when my wallet was light. Unfortunately, he only has productive conversations with people who align with him. When talking about God with Peterson, or Trump when Scott Adams liked Trump, there's nearly zero chance he'll meet his content with their content. He seems totally incapable of sitting in someone else's perspective longer than affording a sharp, academic-styled jab. He doesn't ever seem willing to live among those he disagrees with. After all, he has a science of morality to defend.
He’s just not convinced by their arguments I assume.
@@Zenhumanist Then he's a Polemicist but yet doesn't like Trump's? He's a hypocrite.
Andrew Sullivan is catholic as mentioned in the podcast, so I would not see that as a perfect alignement with Sam ideologies. They manage to have an excellent conversation however.
Orange Man gone.
(-:
35:49 :D...I feel You Sam
So what happens when the unstoppable force of TDS meets the immovable object of TDS?
This podcast.
Haha. I love how Sam tries to deflect these comments at the start. And then immediately follows by an HOUR AND A HALF of textbook TDS trump bashing we’ve heard incessantly for 4 years straight, no discussion whatsoever of the real issues.
Just trump is bad. Biden must be better by default.
@@chrisd6736 Agreed. I used to respect Sam, but his lack of objectivity and full blown hysteria on Trump has destroyed his credibility. Ironically, his brand - reason - collapsed under the weight of his emotional projection and absurd fits of mind reading. Trump broke his brain. Lol.
@@quintbromley2112 couldn’t agree more.
We can debate policy and I'd probably agree with alot of Republican or conservative views. But the point here is that anyone who does not see Trump as he is described here is intellectually stunted and/or in pure denial. It doesn't matter if half of South America is at the Mexican border streaming in, to delegate sovereignty to this base autocratic narcissist is not the answer!
The person that doesn't get it, remains you, Sam.
You wonder why it feels like there's never any peace, or quiet? For the last four years it has been a non-stop barrage from the political left, the Democrats, and the mainstream media, but I repeat myself, railing against him and trying to unseat him. And he doesn't act like anyone before him in the face of that kind of attack. He attacks back.
This is precisely why I, and 70M others voted for him this time. I keep pounding this point: I, for one, am not going to be told who may or may not be the president of the United States. I didn't vote for him last time, because of you, but I'll be damned if I'll sit by and let his presidency simply be invalidated by unelected power brokers.
If he was a potato, that had been elected to the presidency, I would behave the same.
No it's everyone else that doesn't get it.. lol.
You lost the election. Badly. Go away and self-reflect why your nation doesn't like your candidate or your party.
Thank you for sharing
TDS - Trump Done Sam. TDS - Trump Done Sullivan. Still love both these guys but they need to do something cathartic to get the former president out of their zen systems. Peace.
great comment
@@joshjones9878 Thanks man, I get one right roughly once a year. Take it easy man
Did more people get COVID at a Trump rally than got AIDS at an Andrew Sullivan beach party?
Either Sam cannot form what ever argument he needs to convince a significant portion of his followers or his followers cannot find the argument to convince Sam...in either case this is surreal. Somehow a world in which Kamala Harris an outright criminal, being one old ass heartbeat from the office of the president is a good thing scares me far more than anything Trump has done. 23:55, world for word you are describing Kamala to a T.
If someone like kamala scares you far more than trump does, you have no idea what you're even talking about. You should let people who actually understand the gravity of how disastrous the trump administration has been take care of things.
@@GIFT1FROM1THE1GODZ Imagine using a basic logical fallacy as your entire argument in response to a post on a Sam Harris video.
@@Claythargic You might state in your comment exactly what makes Kamala a criminal. We will soon see Trump's tax returns and then you will realize that your worst fears of a criminal president came to pass 4 years ago.
I disagree on the point that Trump hasn't done enough to denounce white supremacy. If you look at even a single compilation where he does, it's very clear that he's done more than his due diligence. Instead, I know it sounds like conspiracy theorist talk but I genuinely think the media by and large just does a poor job at showing that because it's easier for them to call him a racist if they don't show those clips.
The most hysterical podcast I've ever listened to!
are we going to get a new episode already where you talk about everything that's happened so far since the last one?
I voted for Obama in 2008. So talking about the character of an individual in determining capabilities for being President. Obama broke the record of breaking constitutional law by bypassing congress and senate for legislation then taking it to Supreme Court knowing is illegal. Is that not the best proof of an egomaniac narcissist? What about the worst president for journalism, whistle blowing and lack of transparency? Isn’t that the foundation of our country, to create a gridlock so to better arguments for legislation and avoid absolute power? Please help me in my ignorance....
Oh.....he used the FBI for political interest!
Don’t intentions/actions count more than speech?
That's not proof at all of narcissism, it's proof that Mitch McConnell refused to budge on virtually anything even remotely like a compromise and forced Obama's hand.
Holy cow, I'm nearly through this thing, and the cognitive dissonance that is obvious Within the context of this conversation is just off the scale. I don't get it.
Wot?
Sam, you caught the Trump derangement.
Feelings are more important than facts.
They call all republican racist, remember how they treated Mitt Romney. They went crasy pants. Also remember the meme of George bush. “Miss Me Yet”. The left went crasy on him, that’s why the meme was funny/popular.
I have been waiting for this since it aired on 10/31/20. RUclips is a great venue.
Does anyone know why this just came out when it was recorded 10 days ago?
because most of us listen to the podcast version the day it comes out and but play again to bask in the YT comment world later? or if you mean a real reason, might have something to do with the subscription based model Sam is using 🤷♀️
@@emerraldx congratulations on being so smug!
Would love a conversation with Thomas Sowell or someone similar
Interesting to hear this after elections. What is interesting so far, even among these grounded critics, is that Biden is graded on a curve. For me, seeing his tepid speeches, Biden as unifier-of-America does not seem plausible.
Is the US capable of having a good presidential candidate anymore? 🤔
25:25 my favourite part. Their is an energy to Trump.
Sam Harris is an absolute gem 💎 ✨️
It’s completely mind boggling to hear Sam Harris and his ideological twin completely unable to comprehend the attractiveness of the Trump candidacy in the eyes of half of the American population and a large percentage of the population in other developed countries too. They endlessly obsess about the personality traits and never evenhandedly discuss the real reason for his success (which has nothing to do with his personality).
@@elizabethkraszewski6603 They talk specifically about that multiple times... They even give Trump some credit for helping highlight that issue. But they also talk about how, despite his bravado, his actions with tariffs were not much more than tinkering.
@@elizabethkraszewski6603 There has been very little revived manufacturing either under Trump's watch, even prior to COVID, though much more so since then. Just look at the joke of a Foxconn Plant in Wisconsin that he called the "8th Wonder of the World." It's a total embarrassment to the point he stopped bringing it up during his rallies in the state, it was essentially corporate welfare for Taiwan that has still, 3.5 years later, led to practically no domestic jobs. But it did force dozens of families out of their houses with eminent domain.
The left in the USA, are like moderate Conservatives in the UK. Despite our current failings with Boris, the USA in many European countries has become an embarrassment. Sam in the UK would fit in well with what was once a moderate conservatism. I would not want to live in the USA. Thankfully, you now have some reason back. What a relief.
I hate Trump but I hate more what the Dems have done in the light of Trump.
Its pretty hard to point fingers at Trump after 4 years of the Dems manufacturing .
Need another Paul Bloom episode
Brilliant
Why the reposts today?
These guys need to get back together, now that it's post 1/6
I know I’m sort of missing the point here but what is that cool intro music
