    Creatively inspiring and hilarious at the same time. Great video, Sarah! And props on allowing the parts machine to shine with dignity and a cool factor at the same time.

    I think this is a fun way to display a parts piece.

    Thanks for showing us the process. Did you consider using an LED strip type lighting at all which could allow various colors and a lower voltage?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 года назад +2

      I did consider that as well, but I really liked the look of an "old fashioned" lightbulb. The one I chose also had an old timey internal mechanism to fit that aesthetic

    Oh my gosh girl! Be careful! This is such a cool idea. I will look at the video about the light kit. I need to rewire a lamp but it is the sort of "knot" at the base of the bulb that I can't achieve properly. Love the video!

    Hi Sarah. Please don't worry. You put the shell of a parts machine to good use, repurposing it as a lamp.

    A stained glass “sheet of paper” would be cool in that.

    Ouch…electricity hurts! I think you found a great balance for your lamp. The parts from it have already helped to bring other typewriters back to life. Plus you didn’t destroy what’s left in creation. Hard to see collectors getting angry over that…but then, there’s always somebody, LOL!

      Thank you! I struggled with making sure I was still being respectful of the machines and other collectors. I appreciate your support- it makes me feel so much better about it!

    That was brave of you, Sarah. Typewriters are mechanical art, and if you can display an otherwise broken typewriter, bully for you!

    Hot glue isn´t that bad. I glued the keys of an destroyed IBM-Selectric-II onto a flat wireless PC-Keyboard and I love it.
    And yeah, the collector-community wants to have a word with me too XD
    Greetings from Germany.

    The way I look at it is - you bought them, you can do whatever you like with them.
    I'm not opposed to the idea itself, I'm just not sure how functional a typewriter lamp would actually be!

  • @mjordan2876
    @mjordan2876 Год назад

    I have no problem at all with your typewriter lamp. That machine that was developed for creativity can now live on by illuminating your home in a creative manner. It's better that it was re-purposed than sitting in a box in a closet hidden away. Sorry you got electrocuted though!

    Very cool. Do you think you could slide some an EL sheet on top of the felt and light the inside of a fully functional typewriter? It looks like a lot of hard work. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 года назад +1

      It's probably possible. My other concern was the smell. The felt in that thing retained such a bad mildew smell even after being outside that I thought removal seemed like the best option!

    Semantic point: You did not get electrocuted, you merely got an electric shock. According to my 1972 Webster's Unabridged dictionary, as well as other older dictionaries and my junior high English class, electrocution is when someone dies from electric shock. Newer dictionaries seem to have expanded that definition to include severe injury by electric shock, but all the ones I found (not counting Wiktionary and other user-built dictionaries) agree that shocks not resulting in hospitalization fall short of electrocution. Thank G-d, all you got was a painful shock, a scare and some heightened respect for those wires and outlets in the walls.
    Don't feel too foolish for the misadventure, though. I did the same thing to myself a few years ago while attempting to fix a refrigerator, and I'm old enough and experienced enough to have known better. I remember thinking, "You should unplug the fridge before continuing", but I somehow managed to distract myself just long enough to forget to do that. I then proceeded to expose my fridge's circuit board, begin poking around it to try to figure out where the thermostat was, and ZAPPED myself clear across the kitchen. I was startled but unhurt, the circuit board was a total loss and the joke was on me because the darn thing didn't even have a thermostat of the sort I was seeking.
    Be well, stay safe, live to tell us about more cool typewriter adventures and I look forward to your next video.

    I've used that Totally Awesome stuff on typewriters (and didn't dilute it) and it made my hands super dry. I've read people use it as paint remover before they repaint metal surfaces. It prob would've helped with the glue under the felt!

    Wow, someone’s finally solved the age old conundrum of why can’t a typewriter be a lamp?? And they said it couldn’t be done.😉
    Seriously, though, good job on making this work while, at the same time, being sensitive to the preservation of classic typewriters. I believe most here would agree; you’ve fashioned a cool lamp out of an irreparable machine (even harvesting parts to help others along the way!) and, as physicians like to say, you have done no harm.🙂
    (I really like your videos, although someday I hope to see them without learning about how my doctor told me about Dupixent.)

    I love typewriters and think that fi they can be restored then they should be. But also, some are too far gone so if they can be turned into something else then great! Lets not be too precious about them. Good for you for being creative. bring it on!!

    there is absolutely no problem with using a "memory keepers" machine as a light, a planter, a toilet paper dispenser. i'm of the belief that keeping those things from unsuspecting suckers who think it's a typewriter is a benefit to all humanity. and that "awesome" cleaner? i've discovered that it will completely disintegrate an entire typewriter. seriously. mostly seriously.

    Oh, isn’t she a Dolly! No issue with some transforming while essentially retaining the original. Bear in mind not all typewriters have an easy to remove platen. My concern is your naïveté with regard to electrical matters … and, shouldn’t you be wearing gloves and eye protection when using chemicals? 😍
