Natives nor any minority would never deny a true ally of their struggle. But, someone claiming to be something they’re not for “prestige” and convenience does more harm than good and takes air away from true Native Americans who still face racism and bigotry to this day. She was non-indigenous European Mexican. She could have been a voice for that community which still faces racism and bigotry but she chose to put on a costume for notoriety. The opportunities she took off the backs of real Native’s plight is tragic. She should not be celebrated.

Her name was Maria Cruz. She had zero N.A blood. Her entire family came out and spoke on it.

Everyone saying she was a fraud may be missing the point. She was, in fact, an actress. Where does society draw the line between acceptable lying (acting) and unacceptable? There were cameras rolling for her performance and Brando may very well have achieved exactly what he set out to achieve.
