    You can definitely hear better detail in the mid range on the Kali's. Vocals are more up front and clear. The Yamaha's are a bit blurry in the mids compared.

      The room which was used for testing was most likely badly acoustically treated. The frequency response indicates heavy room modes on bass frequencies and the upper region seems to have reflections as well as the measurements do not follow the anechoic ones...

    I tested In-8 and they have good mid bass balance balance but they lack in highs that makes them more flat sounding (less deep less depth). Even listening them so that the tweater was not firing in agle but rather straight does not tuned it to be good enough. It was great to hear every tweak of eq there and they are true in reproduction bass to mid but higher highs lacks also dynamicaly. Yamaha is well known for acidy sand paper sound that is very easily harsh because of the tweater and are "hard" in higher spectrum transients. Kali In-8 is the oposite of it. I wish it were somewhere in the middle.

    Honestly the highs seem to be more exaggerated in the hs8. Also with the in8 the highs are not exaggerated plus its a step up due to the facts that it reveals the mids, not just the high and low frequencies

    1. With the in-8's the soundstage almost sounds unidirectional, with hs8's i can hear the crossover/timing differences between woofer/mid & tweeter . especially clear when listening to voices
    2. The HS8's sound rather harsh in the high mids. Tiresome to the ears...

      well when you compare a tweeter that is almost dead flat to a tweeter that has a huge dip at 8-10khz over video of course the flat tweeter is going to sound alot louder and may even be harsh depending on the play back system you used.

    This might be a bit misleading since you haven't taken the speakers height into consideration and made up for this either with mic placement or speaker stand height. On the HS8's the shotgun microphone is pointed directly at the tweeter but on the IN8's they're pointed at the blue light between the tweeter and the woofer.

    • @jesperhagberg
      @jesperhagberg 2 года назад +12

      @@THERIAN-j3i Seems like you misunderstood both my comment and the design of the monitor. The IN8 is a 3 way monitor with a coaxial design. The tweeter is placed in the center of the midrange element. However, the microphone is directed at the blue light in between the midrange driver and the bass driver, this could heavily skew the measurements since the higher frequencies are way more directional than the lower ones. Meanwhile, on the HS8 the microphone is pointed straight at the middle of the tweeter. So yes, I did do my research, did you? Please refrain from snarky comments, especially when you aren’t even properly informed.

    A fairer comparison might be the more professional line of Yamaha, which is the MSP7 (no longer made) and subwoofer (which translate to other systems beautifully), against the Kali IN-8... The Kali's being a 3-way system seem absolutely amazing, I've been looking at upgrading to them from my Yamaha MSP7's going through 2 x Yamaha 8" Subwoofers which run flat frequency (via Sonarworks) down to 31hz (-5 at 25hz, -12 at 20hz) in my treated room and does mastering duties good enough for my little studio... I wonder however, how nice the Kali IN-8 would be like with 2 of their subwoofers, that would essentially be a 4-way stereo system???... I'm tempted to upgrade to this, but wonder if it's a big enough jump in quality, or should go for Adam S3V's and 2 x Sub 10's, or Neuman KH310 and 2 x KH750 subs, but them at double the price of Kali and Yamaha, it wouldn't sound twice or three times as good, diminishing returns and all?

    • @sub-jec-tiv
      @sub-jec-tiv Год назад

      Are you feeding left and right their own sub? Is bass really observably directional enough in your mastering space that you require two subs?

    • @adammusic1124
      @adammusic1124 Год назад +1

      @@sub-jec-tiv I ended up upgrading to the IN-8 V2's and the Kali subwoofer and it's sensational in my mixing space... With the 2 subs, it's not so much that their directional, but rather 2 subs helps even out room modes, but no, I cannot hear the subs... My mastering setup does however have 2 subs and floorstanding reference grade speakers. It's not so much that you can sense the bass from left and right, but more "feel" the base and are able to see more "into" the bass region more accurately and on top of this, sub frequencies are very good for giving the full presentation of air and space in a mix, not having that can cause mixes to sound "dry" or "empty" or "bloated" with bass because if you can't hear it (and better yet, not be able to "feel" it) then you cannot mix it, I get tracks all the time to master and hear this void of bottom end balance on my 2 subs... I will eventually go up to 6 subs in the room for the "full" presentation of bass frequency layers in this region.

    Well this is quite interesting, as Kali IN8 in the comparison here with HS8 do sound (at least on my headphones) very similar to the 2way Kali LP8 in other test against HS8, which given the fact Kali IN8 are 3way speakers, I would expect to sound weaker in the mids/highs, but there seems not much of a difference between IN8/LP, considering tests of both types of Kali monitors vs HS8 published on this channel surprisingly. Sound wise, I realized or heard compression/limiting better on the Kali, while stereo image and spatial separation seem much better in HS8 (mind you - in this comparison). Those are most important factors for me, which I got out of the comparison aside freq response which in all of the mentioned monitors naturally differs also in terms of how they are perceived. It is also quite revealing observation of differing people's opinions - where some call HS8 harsh in the top, others call that "sparkle and sheen", calling on Kali's missing top end, and bit of mud around 500Hz, which is for others somehow satisfying in terms of lowend balance and less fatique because of less highs (yet harsher than HS8 here). Its so relative to assume real application results and how the mix translates across usual suspects, using both types of speakers, given the fact room/positioning plays a huge role, as well as DA conversion. I had a chance to listen HS8 next to JBL308 in treated environment and HS sounded very unpleasant, boxy and very dry, while in this comparison they sound very organic and exciting - which I would define as "coloured", (which they are called for being not) and must admit I loved how they reproduce here. The parts of the music where vocal or instrument is soloed do not reveal much of a sonic difference, but when the mix is busy, things start to sound quite differently - HS8 sounded "bigger", (louder subjectively) where Kali's flat response with somehow very decent mids, but less of the very top. 7-12KHz bandwidth seems kind of the common ground where both Yamaha /Kali share similarities. The Kali sound bit more sterile from mids and higher, in general listening quite revealing, yet I would say in terms of "definition" HS8 enables the listener to pick very detailed image quickly and precisely. The same goes to less smeary lower mids in Yamahas, compared to the Kali's in this test. From the general public opinion as a blind listener coming to this video, I would be expecting HS8 being harsh, and very sterile, but here they sound "warm", and bit more hifi, while I would expect from the public opinions, that Kali gets to be bit more hifi with beefy low end, yet I do not perceive them to be like that at all in this test, but they seem to me rather on the flatter and sterile side, with slightly harsh upper mids, unlike HS8 here, which seem phenomenal. These kinds of tests are highly sought way for those unable to listen and compare various monitors next each other, yet one should keep in mind there is huge amount of factors having influence on the final outcome of what is perceived as "good" or "bad" subjectively in this kind of testing environment for the listeners, as well as objectively. Thanks for the great content !!

      Most underatted comment. I agree. I was prefering the kalis initially because it sounded “punchier” to me. But aftwe listening to different songs i realized the hs8s sounded wider. Like you can hear thebwhole stereo spectrum as opposed to the kalis where it sounds like each speaker is pushing a mono track.

    I run the a pair of in-8's in my home studio, they are anything but dull. Also, this is an odd choice for a comparison because the hs8's are two way, right? So the Kali's will naturally provide a much more balanced tone being a 3-way speaker - ideal for mixing really, that's why I bought mine. I score music to picture and the Kali's were by far the best bang for the buck option when I bought mine over a year ago and remain so today. I think they litterally just announced the gen 2 version of the speaker as well, same price, less self noise if that kind of thing bothers you.

    • @sub-jec-tiv

      You can totally compare them because a lot of people shop by price not by comparing exact design. This is a very useful comparison, because many people have the question: “heard the HS are very flat, are the 3-way IN Kali’s better in sound reproduction?”
      That’s a common question.

The dip is an on-axis diffraction artifact of the midrange baffle interface. It is evident in on-axis measurements, but not in total sound power. Perception of timbre should be neutral in most rooms. for nearfield a quality 2 way any day vs cheap 3 way, there is a reason there is no cheap 3way studio monitors, Kalis lows and highs not that good even being 3way.

      no the Kali tweeter is way to weak with that massive drop, which makes the hs8 sound much brighter and more detailed and clean in comparison,
      but the kali sounds really dull, like if if someone has drowned them or wrapped them in foil or so.

      @@JoshyLats yeah ofc all you say...is that what you have to say to someone that has a different opinion and hearing?
      you are not the deciding factor here and if you cant hear the massive drop on the Kali's upper end and how dull that sounds compared to source or HS8, then you sir must be having more difficulties hearing things than i'm supposed to have.
      I mean just the first Song "Man on Fire" makes it crystal clear, where the Kali's lack big time.
      Oh and jfyi: im listening over a Creative Soundblaster AE-7 in direct mode 32bit 384KHz sitting under a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770Pro 250Ohm, that should give me a good enuff hearing solution to hear that difference, but thx your highness for your benevolent advice. ;)

    I'm sorry but this video is misleading. I just compared both side to side in my treated room and in no way are hs8 better. From this video the yamahas are more pleasant but live the kali are better in everything, low, mid and high. Listening to hs8 immediately after in8 2nd is even unpleasant because of the high frequencies too harsh dnd also some confusion in bass frequencies. In8 have more punchy, smooth and controlled bass, the highs are just fine, no need to boost with the built-in eq and mid are always clear and crispy. If you are undecided buy without hesitation the in8, they play in another league than the hs8.

      what about your room size? neverthless the amount of treatment the size is the size. Btw, a sign of a color listening is a pleasant experience, flat response listening tends to be harsh, specially if the mix was made like that, would believe better if the room was analized.
