    I was able to fix my AC (same GE you have). In year 2 and now year 3 it would spit water like crazy after a few hours, just like this video shows, i had the drain plug pulled, i tried tilting the unit even more to the outside, even though it's suppose to be level and nothing would work. So, I took the AC out of the window, took off the front cover and also the entire unit cover. On the front left side there is a little tunnel for water to drain to the back, I cleaned that out and there was some debri and must have been enought to cause my issue, there was some dirt and dead beattle dry rotted body. I was suprised since I don't have tree leaves or anything I would have thought could have clogged it up. The other thing I did was also drill a hole in the bottom back where that drain tunnel is. The reason I did this was because the built in drain plug, I could not see how the water from the front could easily get to that hole, so I figured I would make my own (I don't care about effiency at this point), so that the water would be gone. I've been running AC for 1 week and have NO ISSUE's anymore!!!! I spent many hours and searching for answers and just a little time to do what i mentioned fixed it, I had never taken apart an AC in the past and was hesistant, but it was simple and worked.

      I've been drilling holes in the bottom for the last ten years. Something in the universe is wrong. We shouldn't have to do that. The drain holes should be larger and there could also be an easier way to get to the clogged drain shaft. When it rains hard the issue intensifies. It spits water from the front and must be dried out before using again.

    A trick that works.
    Unplug the AC unint .
    Take a 7"×2" stripe of t-shirt material and a wire twist-tie or a small piece of wire go outside and stick 2 to 3 inches of the material through one of the lowest vents on the bottom side as close to the back end of the unit as possible, just enough that the t-shirt material is soaking up some water, leave the remaining material hanging down toward the ground. Wire this material to a vent so it won't fall out. This will kinda create a siphon so the water will run out there instead of spitting into the house and your AC unit will still have enough water in the bottom of the pan to run correctly. You're done. Turn the AC unit on. Fixed in less than five minutes
    You may also need to add one to the other side of the AC unit depending on how much water is going into your house.
    This really does work give it a try.

    Pulled the plug on mine and it works so much better. The "sling ring" nonsense may work where it isn't extremely humid, but not here in Central Texas. Drain holes have worked just fine for years and that's why your central HVAC unit has condensate lines and they have to stay clear.

    They're pretty easy to take apart. I take ours apart once at the beginning of the season, take a leaf blower to it get all the crap out then use a spray bottle with dish soap & little bleach. just cover the controls with a plastic bag so they don't get wet. rinse it off. It helps with the smell on first start up and kills any mold/mildew.

    I have a GE AC just like yours, and it will eventually start growing slime on the casing around the vents. It will start to smell like fishy stagnated water. All that water splashing from the fan drained into my wall through the window sill, and under the house. The water caused my floor and carpet to rot, and mildew. I finally had to carefully drill a hole under the casing without hitting any components. A bunch of old nasty water drained out. It seems to be working as good as ever after the hole modification. You have to be really really careful when drilling the hole. Also if the hole causes too much of a problem I could plug it back up with something but I think drilling a hole in the bottom back may be the solution.

    When I first installed one of my window units it dripped water on my floor. What i did was tilt it back more and unscrew two screws of the frame on the back so it could drain properly. If I were you i would just leave the plug out. If they told you to leave it in then i don't think they know what they are talking about. It's suppose to drain, all air conditioners have to drain.

    • @FSCHW
      @FSCHW 4 месяца назад

      They don’t drain them anymore. They want a pool of water on the outside. The fan blade has small scoops on it that go into the water and splash it on the external coils to cool them.

  • @docchocobo
    @docchocobo 4 года назад +15

    It sounds like the pan underneath the inside coil might be slightly clogged and water is not able to escape. Usually they have a little indentation molded into the bottom of the unit for the water to escape down, kind of like a little drain Channel. If even the slightest amount of dust or dirt gets in that thing it'll piss all over your house. The only way I've ever seen to get those to work right again is to either get a really thin wire and stick it up that channel from the outside and remit out a little, or you could try spraying at the bottom of that divider between the inside and the outside down at its base to try and dislodge the crud. But once you get that thing poked open, tons of water will come from the inside or the outside. I haven't found a single window unit that wasn't a pain in the rear when it came to this situation. I don't like taking a garden hose to anything that's sitting in my window because the water could make it inside theoretically, but if you must you must. The other thing you could check is to make sure that it's leaning down slightly toward the outside so the water can move my gravity. I hope that helped and I hope you got your problem fixed. I know there's probably plenty of others here who is offered the same solution and short of taking it apart and cleaning it I can't think of any other way. I feel your pain I've been there many many many times.

      I have a 25,000 btu window AC unit. It's 131 lbs. Me and my brother take it out the window about every 3 years to clean it well. It's an old unit but still cools well. But this year I've developed what sounds like ice pellets hitting around about where the fan is. Some water also comes out the front. It's never done this before. I've drilled a couple holes outside near the rear and more water is coming out but it still has this ice problem. Other than it being a noise problem it still cools very well. I've decided to grin and bear it the rest of this summer and get a new unit next year. Hard for me to buy another one when this one cools so well.

    with the drain plug OUT, does it still spit water?
    if yes, then there is a clog inside somewhere, in the area at the bottom on either side, where water runs from front to back. maybe some bugs crawled in, or some leaves or dust got sucked into the system.
    unless you want to send in for the warranty, you need to remove and unscrew it, and clean the path(s) from front to back.
    if it STOPS spitting water with the plug out, just leave the plug out.
    humidity levels vary from place to place and different times of year. in higher humidity, the water builds up too fast to drain normally, so that plug is for those situations.
    normally, it's GOOD to let the water pool at the bottom, as the fan inside blows it onto the coils, which helps cool them down. but if the water builds up too quickly, it will have no place to go but INSIDE. so just leave the plug out til it gets less humid. just don't lose it!

  • @farnk
    @farnk 4 года назад +5

    Not an expert but agree with leaving the plug out AND closing vent to outside air (recirculating the air you're cooling in the house). Unit might be too small for the area you're trying to cool. Just having it on 76-78F and using fans as long as it's cooling and dehumidifying the air during the day is better than nothing. That extra water you get after you seem to have drained it could be from what is leftover in the unit, which can freeze even with clean filter.

  • @John-B69692
    @John-B69692 3 года назад +3

    First of all there are two fans in the AC. One cools the outside coils and dissipates heat OUTSIDE the unit. The other Blows the cold air inside the house. The outside fan has what is called a "sling ring" around the edge of the fan/squirrel cage that grabs water and throws it / blows it onto the outside coil/fins and helps it dissipate heat. The pan below catches all the condensation the AC makes and it is picked up by the sling ring... The pan(s) need to drain but they also need to stay full enough so the sling ring has water to work with... I have the same problem (water inside the cold air area not draining and splashing around making annoying noise...) My bet is that the drain hole / drain channel between the inside of the pan and the outside of the pan is clogged... ((WATER GROWS ALGEA)) I'm going to pull the AC, take it apart and hose everything out... I suggest you do the same....

If it gets clogged your AC will not cool. I know it's a pain. I'm 63 and know I won't be able to do this too many more years. But it has to be done. I guess central air is the other solution but I've heard horror stories of electric bills close to $400 but I may have to eventually go that route. My ac unit is brand new. Just put it in yesterday. It does drip outside. Maybe, I need to put a dehumidifier in the attic also. At least until I get the main floor a.c. window unit in. That will help keep the attic cooler.
    Or remove the screws holding the ac to the window, bring the ac back in, remove the plug, ...
    This would have been good to know last year with the new ac. I wondered why my carpet was wet. I just removed the unit.
    Maybe I could have just used a dehumidifier, and the air purifier for a fan. That's all I have used thus far this season. Screens on the window, and a tower air filter in my living room. Where is where I spend the majority of my time.
    I didn't have to do that with the 2 old 12- 17 yr old ac units that have out the last 2 years. It's a new ball game. 🤷‍♀️
    If I may say so without stepping on toes, yours looks more flat at that distance in this video.
    Mine has probably got almost 1 1/2 - 2 slant. I couldn't really measure mine, because at the time I was putting it in, I had wasp flying around.
    I couldn't remember if the booklet stated 1/2" to 1" or 1" - 1/2, ... of a slant.
    I'm just working with an old house and the window sill on the outside slants down already. There's no front sill left either. Just the center and back third.
    And since it's in the attic, at 65, bad ones, keck, hips, and back; I am not getting on any ladders (with my trifocals), is all I got to say about it.
    Good luck hope you, we all, get it figured out. I do prefer a slower drip, than fast, so it doesn't create a well in the dirt, and seep into the basement. 🙄😒

    From what I know, the newer units do this in terms of efficiency. They "throw around" the condensate on the outside part of the unit. The outdoor fan will blow the water against the coils, helping cool them and dissipating the heat more quickly.

    I also have the same problem and removed the black plug. Still condenses alot and spits water inside. Unit is only one year old. Since it is very hot and humid now in NJ, I will just wait and see and make any adjustments when it gets down to the 80s. Filter is clean also. The only fix I saw involved spiking holes in bottom of styrofoam. I will hold off on that until I really have to. Great video and hope it works out.

If you don't want to you need to go and get AC without a plug preferably a bigger unit at that point when it starts doing something funky a bigger unit without a plug like that has a hole that runs from the coils that are inside the house to the back of the unit where the pan is and that will be filled so I got to do is pop the back off and stick a metal coat hanger in there make sure it's clean and your you're fine

      @@1BubbaMike1 Mike, I'm curious, do you have a lot of mosquitoes in your area? The last couple years, mosquitoes have gone inside our air conditioner. The air conditioner would literally chop up thousands of these dumb mosquitoes as they go inside the unit. The problem with this is that it causes the problem of having the air conditioner get clogged up with the bodies of the mosquitoes. We would use a combination of water and bleach to clean out the air conditioner when this happened and it helped. We were never able to find a particularly good repellant for the mosquitoes, though.

    I'm having the exact same problem but my unit is a lot older. Probably 10 years. It's cooling well but this year it started making rattling sounds like maybe small ice droplets are being blown where the fan blows air into the room. I also see water around the louvers where the air blows out. I thought maybe water wasn't being drain properly so I went out and drilled some holes under and near the rear of the AC. So it's draining a lot more water but I'm still having this noisy ice pellet thing going on. I'm sure the noise is ice because the unit cycles on and off during the night when it's cooler and when I wake up I'm not hearing all this noise. I can also see water coming out the louvers. The filter wasn't really dirty but I took it out and cleaned it. I have also started running the unit fan on high thinking that would keep the coils from freezing. No matter what I still have the same problem so I'm perplexed also. Again, it cools the whole upstairs very well and it just started doing this about a week ago. I have a device that measures humidity and it's around 46% so that's ok. I don't know what it is.
    For the life of me I can't figure out why they'd put a plug to NOT let the water drain out. I just don't get that.

      @@1BubbaMike1 hey you know what mine was doing that after we just had some hardcore rain again here in the Tampa Bay area and I just think the wall unit filled up with water and that's the reason why it was doing that because I don't have a board covering the top of it I see a lot of people have boards over the top of theirs about 8 inches above it and I think that's to block the rain from getting in there and flooding it and making it spit water in. So humidity rain also sprinklers mine actually had to drain plug out of it and it was still doing that but we had so much rain the streets were flooded and where I'm at we're not below sea level.

    i had a unit like that and it worked great for 3yrs except that water would drain and spatter on the outside of the house---like on the brick, and it looks like hell. then it started not cooling and the electricity bill went over 100 bucks more than it should have. so i stopped running it and got a new one---same manufacturer but slighlty different. it does not spatter water on the side of the house. but it makes a lot of noise and can see the fan blade running thru sitting water in the bottom of the tray. very annoying rattling sound. and there is no drain plug, nothing to drain any water.

My darn AC unit is peeing on the floor, is setting off the alarm, too, and I have had to literally grab a diaper and put it under the damn thing until I can clear the water tray and troubleshoot the possible drain hole outside tomorrow! I feel I am breathing water now the air is so watery sweet and humid! It's laughable, yet scary because the water is dripping from the electric cord of the unit! I did a "u-bend" to the wire and shoved a (finally) empty gallon water container under it until the sun comes up tomorrow and I can figure this out. Damn these things!

And sure enough gutter is plugged spilling water over the top of my unit. But because I covered it no water in the unit. The answer for everyone is rain. Not bad units.
