In this video I unbox and review the Unimig Viper 120 Synergic MIG Welder. Specifically, this is my first MIG welder and I bought the Unimig Viper 120 MIG Welder Synergic Kit which came as a package including a Unimig Toxic Welding Helmet, Welding Gloves, 1kg Gasless Welding Wire and Additional Accessories.
After unboxing the welder and reviewing the contents I do a test weld on some thin metal to see how the welder performs!

Engineer here: Good job. All factual info was right. Bonus points for getting the polarity right. (Best way to make gasless MIG terrible is to run the electrode positive...)
One suggestion: Watch your bare arms mate - welding produces worse UV exposure than the sun. The atmosphere blocks the sun's UVC radiation, but the welder produces plenty of UV - full spectrum UV, including UVC, which is highly carcinogenic. (UV is a category 1 carcinogen.) Wear a heavy cotton work shirt with those gloves, and make sure the V of your neck is also protected.

Hi John, thanks for the feedback. I have looked up to you for a few years now and it’s an honour to have you comment on one of my videos! Cheers Drew
Yea I am sheetmetaler myself so true I give out to all these American guys online for welding with t shirts on in there Garages. They say they were only doing it to get views and to look cool show off there tatoos etc What goods that if you end up with skin cancer?
Awesome way to get started welding!
Not wanting to nit pick this video here, but wanting to give some general advice for people starting out:
With gasless wire, the slag should only be a thin layer on top of the weld bead. A quick, gentle whack with a chippy hammer and wire brush should leave a nice-looking bead (which actually contains a lot of the structural strength of the weld!)
Grinding like that removed the weld bead itself, but the fact it was still strong shows that this little machine can achieve pretty good fusion!
Once you figure out how to run the machine, practice running overlapping beads (wire brushing in between) to produce some pad welds. They'll get straighter and straighter as your muscle memory improves. You can also cut some slits in your plate with a grinder to simulate horizontal butt joints. (Pull the torch for gasless and push for gas. I highly recommend using both hands to hold the torch.)
Might need to crank the machine up a for doing right angle inside joints (fillet welds.)
Learn to watch the weld pool (puddle) because this is where the fusion/magic happens!
Once you've burned through a couple of rolls of wire, you'll be getting pretty confident in how to run beads and fuse metal together!!
I've got this welder and its brilliant, what i would recommend for flux core is to buy some anti spatter spray and some nozzle gel, it makes the weld cleaning 100 times better
I managed to pick up this kit cheaper from total tools ($319) then any other place had for just the welder itself. Everywhere was 350 and above just for the welder. I'm going to be testing it out today
Nice!! Cheers Drew
I did the same mate.
Let me know what you think of it. I'm completely new to welding so thought about this kit, and for the crazy bargain at Total Tools, I couldn't pass it up
First video that actually explains how to use the knob
Hi Bill, I haven’t done many reviews and when I di it’s because I buy something I actually want or need, so your feedback is genuinely appreciated! Cheers Drew
Don’t ask me why but always wanted to know how to weld. Really enjoyed your video, it’s very well done!
Thank you
Bought this kit yesterday...that helmet, bought individually, is $120! MIG pliers will set you back between $15 - $25...not sure about the other consumables - good value considering the package is only $20 more than the stand alone welding unit!
Thanks mate just opened mine up
Great video, I still waiting for your next video with the gas on
Hi Mate, thanks for the feedback and encouragement! My problem is literally space for everything I want to do, I need to get myself and organised and build myself a shed/workshop in the back corner of my yard, then I will have more space for tools and projects!!! Cheers Drew
Just bought one today.... looking forward to teaching myself to weld. Your video was really helpful. Thanks
Awesome! Cheers Drew
Nice introduction and a great little welder.
as a welder/sheetmetalworker by trade I'd avoid using this flux cored wire and grab a gas bottle and use solid core wire. The welds are far better quality ,easier to clean and far less gases and fumes. Also by using the the solid core you can see better what you are doing and can vastly improve your welding skills!Anyway I hope that little welder serves you well.I am thinking of getting the Unimig 185 myself
Hi Mate, Thanks for the tips! I am really looking forward to building a shed/workshop where I will have more space for storage of tools and projects. As soon as I do this I will absolutely go for a gas setup as you suggest! Thanks Drew
Good video mate. I'm picking one up today. From a fellow beginner.
Thanks Mate! Cheers Drew
Great honest review. I'm looking at a Uni,mig 120 atm but cannot decide between it and a Michigan or Weldclass unit. Been using a unimig 120 at work an like it but it does have a low duty cycle and very little adjustment
Hi Mate, sounds like you have the advantage of using it at work! When you do buy you should do a video explaining why you bought what you did over the other models that you mention:) Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt I should do that actually. There's afew pro's and cons for the 3 brands I'm looking at. The Michigan unit does have a 3 year warranty, so the seller must have have some faith in the reliability of the components. While there's little to usually go wrong , parts and service is a big thing for me. Apparently the Weldclass models are European made
Thanks for a great video!
Hi Nathan, no problems! Thanks Andrew
@@DrewFixIt I don't suppose you've tried welding aluminium with it?
@@nathanking2484 Hi Nathan, sorry I have not had a need! Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt OK, no worries. Thanks for responding :)
Is there a wire speed nob ? Great video good investment
I heard you blow through btw
Hi drew, i boight a very similar kit, the michigan130a stick welder. And i cant figure out how to get the wire to feed through ive done exactly what you did but the gun womt spit the wire out?
Do you think it can build a trailer ramp without any overheating issues?
Hi Mate, I built two massive gates with no issues the other day with it so I don’t think you will have any problems! Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt thank you
