We know that behind the shenanigans and rivalries everyone is friendly at the end of the day and there is a level of maturity each member brings to the table that makes it feel like we are watching true veterans at work and can learn from their skill
Exactly! And as a result their content fits for all ages. Though I disagree with "veterans at work" part - it doesn't feel like work, but like old friends having fun.
Eh, I mean work as in how they plan their builds and ideas. Many hermits test things extensively in creative worlds and walk us through that process and that in itself feels LEAGUES more professional than most Minecraft videos. It just helps me approach Minecraft in a more constructive way as I'm now a working adult

Something I have to give them credit for is mastering family friendly entertainment. Not children's entertainment, family friendly. The difference is that adults and children can enjoy it alike.
one thing that keeps the drama at bay you didn't cover is the requirement for becoming a hermit. to my knowledge it is the only requirement. every hermit votes on whether or not someone should join, and if one hermit says no, it's a no. also, when discussing topics, things go to a vote, and there is no seniority at all. gem and pearl have just as much voice as joehills and xisuma. some soft requirements to join are individual hermit's rules. joehills will never say yes to someone who even thinks they would give anything to be on hermitcraft, because there is always something more important than playing games with friends. he mentioned this right before leaving the final part of the hermitcraft civil war because he had to pick up his daughter.
@@berkle IIRC it was clarified that it's because, since the Hermits ARE friends above all, sometimes conversations that need to be cut from videos are personal in nature. Having an editor in the mix would mean more people are privy to that.
JoeHills is father of the year my dude. He's awesome. I don't personally watch his videos that much, but I love that his family life takes precedence over everything else.
Grian was the one who taught me that being family friendly was cool. I used to swear a lot when I was younger because I thought it was cool and every older person did too. Grian being so cool and insisting in being PG was an eye opening experience. You could be the Ultimate Chaos and still be family friendly and wholesome.
@@Xerczar That's definetly a big reason but it's probably not the only one, for example if I remember correctly Grian stated in one of his mcc streams that he doesn't swear cause he has met some of his fans irl and he wouldn't dare to swear at them and he also wouldn't dare to swear at a stranger on the street which is why he doesn't swear in his videos.
@@Xerczar The hermits decided to migrate to a more family friendly environment, almost none of the hermits swear nowadays (though people like Cleo and Grian do have a past in swearing, Grian became PG way before joining HC and Cleo has been trying to go PG but still lets out the occasional swear on stream) All in all being able to restrain yourself from swearing can be a good skill in life, you'll find some people who aren't comfortable with swears or sometimes you'll be around children, so being able to be PG is good. Especially if you're a content creator, since RUclips favors people who are PG above those who swear and the like.
When you brought up drama, I was taken aback because in my experience most peoples concerns with drama seem somewhat overblown. But then, looking back, a lot of past Minecraft servers / groups ended or took big hits because of drama: Mindcrack, Zipkrowd, The Cube, SMP live, prototech, Yogscast, Dreamsmp. Perhaps the fact the hermits keep drama on lock down is part of the secret to their longevity.
@@armydillo1013 Bdubs, GenerikB and Etho left Mindcrack following some drama of which the details are disputed. Some say it was because the group was being organised more like a business whilst others claim it had something to do with a sketchy sponsorship run by Bdubs and GenerikB.
Also all of the hermits are genuinely good friends outside of Minecraft and RUclips. And if they are not friends they still respect and collaborate together
Well said. I think The Hermitcraft Recap crew deserve a huge callout also, they do such an amazing job of tying all the individual Hermit stories together, something that isn't offered on any one member's feed. They are just as important a part of Hermitcraft as the members I think

My reason for loving Hermitcraft? The Hermits know how to Minecraft - every single Hermit, takes every episode as if it's going to be the best one they've done yet. They're ambitious, they're talented and they can grind like no other. All of their builds, the redstone, the challenges, the little bickering, the pranks, the collabs - that's hours and hours of work they put into each episode of each season and honestly, every day I wonder how they manage to do it all. Their work ethic is just mesmerising. The sheer amount of respect I have for each and every Hermit is insane. Hermitcraft will always be one of my favourite YT creations.
Honestly, it's crazy how every episode has like 18 hours of gameplay behind it (besides livestreams and the occasional "I have 1 hour to record and upload this video" content Mumbo did once or twice), and it really shows.
What I like best on Hermitcraft is they don't blow up bases maliciously (well most of the time). I love looking at builds so I get sad and frustrated if these get blown up just because of a little prank. Also, even if they did blow up another hermit's base by accident, they offer to compensate or help rebuild/clean and I think that should be the standard.
an add on to your existing point in the variety of viewers that hermitcraft attracts: they have a MASSIVE age range in regular viewers, i have never seen a smp, show, or general fan community with the audience age variety that hermitcraft has. i'm in my late teens, and i love hermitcraft, but so does my over 50 mom, and so does my 9 year old cousin! hermitcraft's humor and tone is high quality and family-friendly, so it is appealing to both kids and adults alike. it's not childish or crude, and doesn't rely as heavily on current trends or pop culture references as a lot of other media right now, which makes it accessible to anyone. hermitcraft is good now, and will still be just as good 5+ years in the future. i think a major contributing factor to all this is that the age range of the hermitcrafters themselves is large. they have an underlying maturity that brings a deep sense of stability to the server that few other smps have. there really is something for everyone in hermitcraft! great analysis!
Hermitcraft regularly bolsters my faith in humanity. There's something just so amiable and inspiring about a bunch of grown adults making a living by *checks notes* being nice to each other, building things in a video game for fun, and developing healthy, wholesome friendships?? It's a breath of fresh air in a world full of negativity. Hermitcraft is just good people being good people and having a blast while doing it, and I absolutely love that.
Fantastic video! For me, personally, Hermitcraft will always remain as the best and most authentic SMP out there. (Yes I know about the plugins and proximity mod but those are just accessories when it comes to the bigger picture)
they are more slight refinements of the game rather than a mod tbh, with the proximity mod, you could get almost the same experience just using discord, which they did for 7 straight seasons, but the change of having it now include proximity adds to the realism and immersion, not a huge difference, but a big enough one to add a ton more enjoyable moments to the game
I do like the plug ins and stuff that they use, it adds so much to the viewing experience and really widens their limits (for example decked out getting amazing and automatic music) but I can never 100% agree with it anymore because of something joehills said a while ago. (I will get the point across in my own phrasing since I do not remember what he said, only his point.) That one big downsides to it is that it isn't available for everyone like previous seasons have been. After the season ends they make the world available for download and if you want to download and play on the world you're going to need an amount of technical knowledge that probably many viewers don't have access too, there are a lot of children that watch and it would probably be a very disappointing experience to download the world only to several aspects being completely different to how it is on the server.
The only plug-in I kinda feel weird about is the recent addition of being able to make custom horns and discs. It's a minor thing that's mainly used for pranks, but it feels kinda off, combined with all the other "custom" things that have slowly become part of HC.
From going from the roleplay DreamSMP where I didn’t really like all the relationships because they didn’t feel real Now I’m in Hermircraft, where I know every Hermit’s name, and the way they all respect and dare I say it, love each other, that’s what I love about it It’s caused my mental health to genuinely boost
2:49 Hermits often don't look into changing the game, they choose to enhance the game, or in doc's case have as much fun as possible and occasionally break the game. Even in mods they use, simple vanilla enhancing mods: armour stand customization, mob heads, player heads, mini blocks, togglable invisible item frames, the ability to have custom textures, custom horns and disks, and even the proximity chat mod they use. None of these drastically change the game, they simply add more to a plain vanilla experience and make it so hermits can make the things they want too even better. All of these enhance the ability to create and make things as detailed as they can get and want. Edit because I have more thoughts: Hermitcraft is also no stranger to dips in views, they've been around long enough to know that everything has it's lulls. Most of the hermits are older too, they have experience with far more things and more knowledge then lots of younger creators. As someone who wants to get into content creation both because of the unfortunate limits some of my disorders give me and because I love to create and perform, I look to them for my inspiration and attitude when it comes to making content. How to better my builds, my redstone, my attitude, and the way I engage with the world around me.
That last point in particular is absolutely true. It sounds cliche, but they aren't in it for the money. The money is something they make on the side, and for many of them its a stable enough full-time income that what they care about most is making fantastic content.
The Hermits provide good clean fun for everyone. Whenever I need some inspiration when building I turn to the Hermits. Doc's helping hand to artists, this years charity fund raiser, and yet, nothing takes them away from just playing and having fun. We all need to bring out that "little kid" in ourselves more often and the Hermits help a lot. My goodness, they even inspired a weekly update! Love them all to bits.
It’s really the variety of content and cross over. Mumbo brings in the red stone viewers viewers and scar brings in the builder viewers but they do a cameo and now you have red stone viewers watching scar because they fell in love with his personality in the cameo.
I also think Hermitcraft has that "wish fulfillment" aspect that also draws in audiences. Many of us may wish we had such a large friend group to play with (or at least stays active with us), or wish we had as much time to dedicate to games (some of those builds take full days to complete), or just wish we had some of their build talent. I no longer play minecraft, but I feel as if I can live through the hermits through the Hermitcraft series.
Very eloquently put! Hermitcraft isn't a sole theme, or idea. Like you said, it's people doing what they want to do for fun, and though my phrasing is a bit cheesy I'll admit, that's what Minecraft should be all about. There will always be someone focusing on builds, redstone, storytelling, or anything they please. Excellent video throughout!
Well said! What I hope for the future is that recruiting new members would go a bit towards either releatively unknown names and/or people who would add something a bit different. Now that Australia is nicely represented with Pearl, I'd be happy to see someone from an Asian minecraft community. I know nothing about what's going on there.
That's true for sure. One of the main reasons I think that hasn't happened yet is timezone difficulty, which undermines the community aspect somewhat. It also has to be said Minecraft is much less prominent in communities which overall have less access to it in English, which dominates the market and obviously influences who Hermitcraft can support. Totally agree that it wouldn't be a bad thing though.
They aren’t looking at new hermits tho, and they’d need to find a english speaking creator as someone not being mainly english would open the door to some difficulties
@@Xerczar yeah, and if they wanted to add someone they would need to be a close friend to at least one of the hermits if not more, and the odds of multiple hermits all being friends with a content creator who doesn't natively(or possibly even) speak english, has an incredibly different timezone, and is incredibly good at the game is incredibly low, of course there are ways to kinda bypass all of those, but it's so unlikely that it probably won't happen.
@@CarrotKing269 I know nothing about the Asian minecraft scene, but I think it's definitely possible to have an Asian hermit (once they're looking for new hermits) because pearl can manage with the timezone issue, and people like keralis, doc, and iskall show that there are people who have English as a second language are beloved on the server too
They don't look forward to add new memebers, they look forward to use thier current members for somwthing new. But if a Hermitcrafter stumbles upon an intresting channel they found which suits the hermitcraft narrative, then a vote is held wether they should be added. If *everyone* agrees then welcome to the server Y_SillyClownfish7 (example name). But you already knew that, because if the server always needs new members to stay alive then something isn't right.
whenever i'm having a bad day, it always gets a bit better when i see a hermitcraft youtube notification. whether it be grian with his chaotic stuff that's just fun to watch, or scar just being a chill wholesome guy, or *insert me rambling off a bunch of hermits and why i like them*, it always brings a smile to my face. it's just fun to watch.
Gday. You are right on the money with you're lovely vid. Hermitcraft has totally replaced TV for me and inspired my own channel. It has everything...comedy, action, and references real-life drama with solutions (I'm thinking of the passing of TFC and Bdubs honest chat about his loss a few years back). New hermits will continue to keep the wholesome culture, I'm sure. :)
I got into hermitcraft during the summer and have been loving every minute of it! I've watched 13 different hermits povs from season nine just because I'll see something happen in someone's episode then I go "Oh now I want to watch that other perspective" but of course I have to watch from the beginning so I don't miss anything
Excellent video! The most amazing thing in Hermitcraft is the friendship and respect between all the members. I love the creativity - both in the building, and also the storylines they come up with. The current situation with Ren The King has got me hooked to a point where I check for new videos from the Hermits constantly. Thanks for a great video!

I agree with your reasons... but here 3 more: 4. Hermitcraft's popularity has attracted the very best RUclips, and Minecraft talent, putting together good creators, with very good Minecraft artists. This makes for excellent engaging content that rival many Netflix or Amazon shows. 5. Wholesome - The Hermitcraft creators made a conscious decision to "keep it clean" and and make content that people at all ages can watch. I'm 45 and would never EVER think that I would watch Gaming RUclips... yet, now for 4 years I have watched about 8 Hermit's videos regularly, and they are always good. I can show them to my nephews and not worry they will be dirty, or have anything bad in them. This has been consistent, and un-wavering. 6. Community - Videos like this one exist, and it's one of the parts that make watching Hermitcraft fun. I like to watch Hermitcraft Recap. I like watching highlight clips. I watch Imp & Skizz now do a non-Hermit podcast because I know them and their personalities. I care about whether Mumbo is doing ok, and whether he will come back. I appreciate Xisuma's deep dives on Minecraft. I like "Saerz's" meme round-up (when he puts it out). The "extra" you get with a good central base show (Hermitcraft) makes it better. Good video!
very well put. as someone that runs a server myself, one of my favorite things about hermitcraft is the attitude around rules. they do have rules, and you can tell that everyone respects them not because they have to but because they believe in the purpose of the rules. they're also loose rules that work with common sense and the respect they have for each other. when someone screws up and a prank goes too far, there's no argument. another thing i think adds to what you said is that i highly doubt there is never any conflict between the creators, but that just adds to what makes them special. any conflict that happens happens behind closed doors, because they're mature adults that can come to a resolution without fans getting involved.

At this point every Hermit has their own pretty big communities. I remember when Doc had like 600k subs a year ago and now he's already reached 1mil. It's almost impossible to avoid Hermitcraft on the Gaming side of RUclips at this point, it's like no matter when you check it there's a Hermitcraft episode on Trending.
Interestingly enough, this video was recommended to me a year after its release. Anyways, I do have one thing to add: The Hermits are all very mature, and I doubt an immature person would be allowed on the server. This ties into the drama point: There is little to no drama because this maturity and respect is so ingrained into the server. An example: Just yesterday, Grian and Gem posted their respective footage of the game they made for Skizz to win back the items they "borrowed". They made sure to check in with Skizz before endangering those items. And they explicitly told their audience that they did so - simultaneously keeping drama among fans to a minimum and teaching especially younger fans about the importance of consent. This is one of the things I love most about the server.
One big thing I think that plays to their favor is the relative seniority (in RUclips terms) the server has on other mc groups when it comes to their members. Most of them have been creating for more that 6-8 years, which helps with understanding how content creation works
You have managed to put into words what many people think but haven't said. I love the humour of hermitcraft which is never crude, and always appears sincere. This was a nice little video.
I like hermitcraft for its laid back chill nature. Even when there is a war going on, it still gives off charming vibes. For a bit I thought it wasn't intense enough, But then 3rd life came about, now I can see the same creators in a more active environment, while keeping hermitcraft nicely chill.
Great video. I agree with the content, but I am more impressed with the production value. Doesn't feel like a 1k+ subs channel. Keep at it, find your style and with a little bit of luck the almighty algorithm will catch onto one of your vids and kickstart your channel.
I’m not even a big fan of Minecraft, but I love Hermitcraft. I just find them very entertaining, I enjoy the shenanigans. Mostly because they keep it funny as heck but friendly! They don’t go too far, and if by chance they accidentally do, they help fix it. The fact that the majority of it is not scripted also appeals to me, I’ve tried to watch some others and while I do like quite a few of the people I just can’t get into how scripted a lot of it is.
Right like I love all the people from Empires but acting is definitely not their strong suit and they have too much scripting and sometimes it just comes off as very awkward!! I still watch people like SolidarityGaming and Smallishbeans because they’re the closest to the chill hermitcraft vibe, but yeah.
A great video once more! Even though the channel revolves solely on Minecraft, there is lots of variety with every upload or at least are certainly funny or interesting. And this is only the fourth proper upload! Can’t wait for future videos.
Watching the RUclipsrs of HermitCraft is like watching a movie in the perspective of every character possible. I actually enjoyed Mumbo Jumbo's evolution as he adds Creative/Artistic MineCrafter onto his resumé as a MineCraft Player in Season 8.
I’ve been watching Hermitcraft since middle school. Now, I’m a Junior in college and this video perfectly highlights why I’ve been watching it for so long. I’m also glad that you pointed out how impactful season seven was, truly, it was one of the brightest things in my life during such an isolated period.
One of my younger sisters has been a Dream SMP girl for a couple years now, however she’s been encouraging me to try Grian and Mumbo for almost a year. I started checking out their videos a couple months ago, and, as always, my sister has a fantastic grasp of what I like. Fun, silly, creative, clean. I may be almost 30, but I prefer content with minimal swearing and sex jokes and lots of emphasis on friendship. And also, despite all the shenanigans, HermitCraft is rather orderly at its heart, which I really like. (I LOVE Ace Attorney and Yu-Gi-Oh, which are the epitome of a lawful core which provides a solid foundation for a lot of crazy happenings.)
I watched hermitcraft a lot when I was like 7 or 8 and I honestly had forgotten about it for the last few years. This just opened a floodgate a memories for me, and it's crazy the nostalgia I get from this sort of stuff, like I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and now I'm in college and all the stuff that happened in between just crazy
It's just satisfying to see the world they build come to being, the storylines whether planned or improvised take place in these worlds unfold and the beautiful personalities that keep it all alive come together and enjoy their time through it all!
You have really summed up what I admire in Hermitcraft. I am amazed at the wisdom and maturity of all the Hermits and I have been binge watching past seasons to get to know the people behind the blocky figures. They are all so individual and wholesome and kind. I am in my 60s and I recognize goodness.
Even during the slight decline of Minecraft popularity during the 2017-2019, Hermitcraft was still striving. It might not have a sudden increase in popularity but it didn't have a sudden dip too. It's steady, and it shows how much the current fans enjoy it. Loyal to the server. As an avid viewer myself, you put it into words perfectly. They have wide varieties of content and the interactions just felt natural. Mainly because this server is actually just friends messing around. It always amazes me how much they trust each other in terms of the shopping district, the pranks, and other stuff like that. Even the biggest pranksters in the server knows the limits of each hermits and never crosses them. Every episode has something unique in them, and every hermit has something unique to them which creates incredible videos to watch. Love Hermitcraft and I don't think I'll stop anytime soon
I'm 50 and watch it religiously with my 13 year old daughter. The thing I love most is the friendship and kindness. What a great message to send to today's youth. ❤
Nice video. Season 7 was so good that I didn’t want it to end. I had to actually stop watching a few hermits as there was just too much stuff to keep up with. After watching Mumbo, Stress, Grian, Iskall, Xisuma, Keralis, Scar, B Dubs, Tango, Scar, and Impulse it was time for the next set of episodes…
Absolutely! There’s so many different ways to watch and even viewing the same events from different angles is brilliant, I personally watch Grian, Mumbo, Ren, Scar and Iskall regularly but the pure amount of fun and love they all pour in is amazing!!
One thing I love about HC is its truly all ages approach-- younger fans can especially get a giggle out of the silly roleplaying, older fans can really appreciate the advanced building tips from the likes of Scar and Bdubs, as well as follow along with Doc's advanced technical minecrafting. So many creators means you're likely to find one that fits exactly what you're looking for. (me, i'm always keeping an eye out for new videos from Joe :) and even if there's a creator you're less endeared by, it doesn't at all ruin the experience of watching others' videos.
I love your "creative template" analogy because you're absolutely right. Hermitcraft doesn't use templates, they make them. Large builds, minigames, server laws/economy, etc. They don't have a template of creative content because most of the Hermits don't seek those ideas out. They just happen to be playing Minecraft and ideas pop up every once in a while.
I really love how this was phrased. "Simple innocence". And it really does feel like that. Even with mischief and the very unsubtle (sometimes accidental) innuendos. Watchung hermitcraft is simple, the only drama is in good fun, and the highest stakes are just a set of shiny rocks that can be reprocured.
The only reason as to why I am not so big on SMP's or generally let's plays now a days is because people now tend to glorify the "pro" side of survival Minecraft, what I mean is that there no longer is a chill gameplay, build a hut, find basic ores, build a small crop farm, taking it slowly you know. Now a days is all about finding diamonds on your first day, enchanting on your second day, nether the third, people no longer take their time to chill in their world and try to make everything into a complicated rushed let's plays for the sake of content. I just missed the days in which a player built a small but cute house and lived in it through the entirety of their let's play and just chilled and did one thing at a time.
i love this video, it’s so good seeing hermitcraft get the praise it deserves! i think another huge reason it’s stayed so popular is that a lot of the people watching it currently have been watching at least one of the creators since they were young. there are very few content creators that manage to keep their content safe and enjoyable for younger children while also still appealing to that older demographic that has stuck around since THEY were the younger children watching- i think every creator on hermitcraft has managed that perfect balance. there’s something incredibly special about the fact that i can enjoy an episode of hermitcraft just as much as i did when i was an eight year old!
I think if anything kills hermitcraft it will be burnout, since every season they feel like they have to do more and more, and go bigger and bigger, so the bases get bigger, the shops, the minigames. So it becomes difficult to complete any of them and have time for other things, and can become a season long slog to complete a goal. We've see a handful of the hermits need time away, and increasingly need time away. As someone who has watched mc videos for almost as long as there have been them, I've seen how massively things changed. From slow paced small scale projects, to fast pace large scale projects. From ones that focus an entire series on a small farm, to ones that need 30 hour time-lapses to communicate the scale of, and to fit into a single episode... and I honestly cant say I prefer one over the other personally, I am watching to relax, and enjoy someones personality, and their fun. The big projects are fun sometimes, but, if they cause entire swaths of things not to happen, and for people to take a break from the series as a whole, then maybe its not worth it? A small project with a lot of heart will always seem big, but, a large project thats empty will just look big
Id say the main reason why people love hermitcraft is because hermitcraft is how we've all wanted to play minecraft. With friends, showing off our creativity and making a immersive world with stories and what not. When you look at younger groups like the dream smp or even that realm that you made with you're friends, its just people aganist each other, traveling 1000's of blocks away and grinding to get the best gear and most efficient farms (Which is why your realm doesnt last long btw). But man hermitcraft is so addicting to watch, I really want to watch everyones perspective in every season but I can't help but keep rewatching Grians hermitcraft season 6 and 7 🤣
Yep I agree. I’ve been watching the Hermits for a few years now and I love how they basically keep the game vanilla. They let the game and the friends speak for themselves rather than trying to inject artificial excitement into it. I used to watch the How To Minecraft crew and that was their problem - too much injecting custom dungeons and such until it just kinda ruined what is cool about the vanilla experience. I’m glad to see the Hermits haven’t gone that route. Pure creativity + shenanigans with friends is excellent and doesn’t need spicing up to make it interesting.
Hermitcraft is something i come back to ever year or 2. It brings me back to times that feel long ago but also bring back my love for the game and the creativity is sparks. These creators mean a lot to me, and this video was a great reminder of that. thank you!
Love the video and analysis. I started watching in s4 and have gone up in the amount of hermits I watch each season. Honestly, one of my favourite things is just trying to watch the videos in order, because release order doesn’t always mean right film order and so one Hermit might show you something that someone built that you haven’t seen
Variety is the spice of life. That's one way of how to sum up hermitcraft itself. I don't typically like to hear about drama, but... the hermits really are brilliant with it. Hermitcraft really does speak for itself.
I've been watching since season 3, and though I'm sure there are other groups out there that make good content I've never felt the need to look anywhere else. HC is just so comfy and fun, you really nailed it
Title suggestion: Why is Hermitcraft so popular? I think it would incite curiosity in the viewer thus making a higher likelihood of them clikcing on the video, moreover in the thumbnail, you could do something like include moments of all three aspects of hermitcraft, the grandeur of the scale the hermits usually build at, their hilarious interactions,and lastly something reflecting the simplicity of it which makes it so fun to watch.
I cannot help but smile at a group of friends having fun together. For me Hermitcraft is the jam. When I am feeling low I would watch Grian and Mumbo doing their shenanigans to lighten my mood and feel happy. I think this is because of how simple Hermitcraft feels, it's just a group of friends having a great time together and like I already said it's impossible to not smile at that. Also Grian never finishes his backs..... :)
I find that the hermits I watch change each season too as I don't have time to watch them all. This season my mains are Scar and BDubs. Previous season I think it was Grian and Mumbo that I watched the most. I'm watching the others too, but not episodal usually just when I'm wondering how they're doing.
One thing that makes Hermitcraft so great is that, at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of friends having fun and recording for other people to watch. It’s the definition of what a Minecraft Server should be. Simple and laid back.
I personally feel like Hermitcraft kept going because of vast creativity in their videos, variety of content be it within other games or within the world of Minecraft (even former Hermits I watched had a variety of content on both ends), and how they're just great human beings, with all the roleplaying, the storytelling, and even the pranking that entertains a variety of fans regardless of age or nationality. At the end of the day, they're generally great adults with content for various Minecraft aspects: building, redstone, storytelling, roleplaying, even silly shenanigans that entertained many people. I also commend you on how you tackled on how they address drama among their fanbases, they really stand their ground over wanting fair game and a positive environment for all. One thing I kind of see within the Hermits is that, at the end of the day, their friendships still remain behind the camera shenanigans and behind the roleplays.
I appreciate this video so much. The sense of community between hermits and the fans make the content so enjoyable and I think this video shares this perfectly
Hermitcraft for me personally is a great way to escape reality. I get so immersed in every episode I watch, I even play MineCraft while playing Hermitcraft in the background because it’s just that good. I smile and laugh when watching the Hermits which is rare for me to do nowadays with my personal problems I have going on. Hermitcraft as a whole is just one big wholesome family and I’m fortunate enough to experience it with so many fans. I’m so grateful to the creators like Scar, Grain, Bdubs, and Ren. They really help to brighten my day when I’m feeling down. I hope that one day I can be a positive light for many like they do.
Given that a lot of the Hermits drop their videos on Friday and I am in Europe, Hermitcraft has become the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" that somehow went out of fashion. And I am 38. Same for my wife.
I thought your essay was fantastic but with 25 active hermits (and several former hermits) you showed one hermit’s builds 80% of the time. Scar & Bdubs had maybe 19% with the rest of the hermits 1%. For a video about Hermitcraft it was very unbalanced. Still, as I said, I agree with your points why Hermitcraft is so special and I thought your analogy of a varied diet of an animal being key to its survival being why Hermitcraft doesn’t go out of style pretty good. Overall, it’s a beautiful tribute to my favourite SMP and its members.
That's a fair point, but you also have to bear in mind that some builds/perspectives are simply better for cinematic purposes or for the point I'm trying to make at the time. Totally get where you're coming from. Thanks :D
Im only partway through the video but i think another point of success is that all of them are absolutely fucking insane in the best way. Theyre good at what theyre doing and its actually nuts. Theyre also all pretty good friends and get along, which makes interactions enjoyable and not stressful
I’m in my 20s and hermitcraft is such a joy. It’s the only MC series I watch, really. Even when they play up server conflict for content you can tell none of it is serious. One moment hermits will pvp to the death and the next moment they’ll compliment each others’ builds or help in projects. They have struck a great balance between engagement in their content as well as a healthy disconnect to keep things in a mature perspective. It’s refreshing!
I think one of my favorite parts of Hermitcraft besides how calm and innocent it is, is how inspiring it is. When I watch hermitcraft, I want to jump on minecraft and build out my own ideas, my own stories. That is the entire intended premise of what minecraft is.
I also like how regularly, not every hermit is involved in everything. Even server wide things have people chilling doing their own thing if they need to. And people are off the server for weeks or months, but its not like their relevancy is going to totally die because its not just them promoting themself. Etho coming back was anticipated by other hermits and he was featured in their videos, so it reminded and flagged to lots of people to go check him out again. And if you watch other hermits regularly, you have regular reminders of oh, I wonder when Iskall will be back. I think it gives them more security to take breaks, and you can tell. They don't seem to have the same kind of pressure to push push push for a certain thing, and they're all really respectful of each other's time and energy which encourages their fans to be as well. And the only time any kind of youtube competitiveness, or stats comparisons at all, is mentioned that I have EVER heard from one of the hermits was Grian joking about Mumbo gaining more subscribers in his time off than Grian was getting. And between them, their stats are so enormous it doesn't matter. When I first branched out from Mumbo and Grian I honestly thought everyone was just as enormous, because everyone is referenced with pretty equal/appropriate reverence. They're also really respectful of like, whose content is whose if that makes sense. When people fall out of a competition, they don't show the final results so we have to go and actually watch the people involved. And people with the dare stick regularly encourage you to go watch them be dared/follow through on the dare, and won't always show it. I think that also really helps reduce drama: you can't be steadfast with one hermit and still know what is going on in the wider hermitsphere, because people don't spoil things for each other. If you want the full story on something, you have to go let yourself be endeared by Keralis or Bdubs or who have you, so its hard to "pick sides" at all.
I find myself rewatching seasons I'd already watched through three different hermits.. because with so many hermits, I'm undoubtedly going to follow a new one, and want to remember what they did in past seasons!
I think this video missed acknowledging that hermitcraft is more accessible than a lot of other series. There's jokes and intense scenes, but there's never any sort of sensitive content or cursing or potentially triggering things without very adequate warning. It's really great to know that I can watch a video without getting my heartrate up while still being excited and wanting everyone to succeed.
This is so well said. And yes it is so bingable 😂 I have rewatched all of Grian’s Hermitcraft videos at least 4 time (they are great for when I am working on a painting). Hermitcaft also has, for the most part, the friendliest community I have found in the minecraft community, which is really shown by the Hermitcraft Recap. Everything in and around Hermitcraft feels real because it is. I think one of the only times they have added a plan/plot to the server was in season 8 with the moon, and that was only because it was a bit of a filler season before the Cave and Cliffs update.

Another point I like to add is the maturity of Hermitcraft. We know that behind the shenanigans and rivalries everyone is friendly at the end of the day and there is a level of maturity each member brings to the table that makes it feel like we are watching true veterans at work and can learn from their skill

Eh, I mean work as in how they plan their builds and ideas. Many hermits test things extensively in creative worlds and walk us through that process and that in itself feels LEAGUES more professional than most Minecraft videos. It just helps me approach Minecraft in a more constructive way as I'm now a working adult

one thing that keeps the drama at bay you didn't cover is the requirement for becoming a hermit. to my knowledge it is the only requirement. every hermit votes on whether or not someone should join, and if one hermit says no, it's a no. also, when discussing topics, things go to a vote, and there is no seniority at all. gem and pearl have just as much voice as joehills and xisuma.
some soft requirements to join are individual hermit's rules. joehills will never say yes to someone who even thinks they would give anything to be on hermitcraft, because there is always something more important than playing games with friends. he mentioned this right before leaving the final part of the hermitcraft civil war because he had to pick up his daughter.

JoeHills is father of the year my dude. He's awesome. I don't personally watch his videos that much, but I love that his family life takes precedence over everything else.
Grian was the one who taught me that being family friendly was cool. I used to swear a lot when I was younger because I thought it was cool and every older person did too. Grian being so cool and insisting in being PG was an eye opening experience. You could be the Ultimate Chaos and still be family friendly and wholesome.

@@Xerczar The hermits decided to migrate to a more family friendly environment, almost none of the hermits swear nowadays (though people like Cleo and Grian do have a past in swearing, Grian became PG way before joining HC and Cleo has been trying to go PG but still lets out the occasional swear on stream)
All in all being able to restrain yourself from swearing can be a good skill in life, you'll find some people who aren't comfortable with swears or sometimes you'll be around children, so being able to be PG is good. Especially if you're a content creator, since RUclips favors people who are PG above those who swear and the like.
When you brought up drama, I was taken aback because in my experience most peoples concerns with drama seem somewhat overblown. But then, looking back, a lot of past Minecraft servers / groups ended or took big hits because of drama: Mindcrack, Zipkrowd, The Cube, SMP live, prototech, Yogscast, Dreamsmp. Perhaps the fact the hermits keep drama on lock down is part of the secret to their longevity.

I think The Hermitcraft Recap crew deserve a huge callout also, they do such an amazing job of tying all the individual Hermit stories together, something that isn't offered on any one member's feed. They are just as important a part of Hermitcraft as the members I think

My reason for loving Hermitcraft? The Hermits know how to Minecraft - every single Hermit, takes every episode as if it's going to be the best one they've done yet. They're ambitious, they're talented and they can grind like no other. All of their builds, the redstone, the challenges, the little bickering, the pranks, the collabs - that's hours and hours of work they put into each episode of each season and honestly, every day I wonder how they manage to do it all. Their work ethic is just mesmerising. The sheer amount of respect I have for each and every Hermit is insane.

Honestly, it's crazy how every episode has like 18 hours of gameplay behind it (besides livestreams and the occasional "I have 1 hour to record and upload this video" content Mumbo did once or twice), and it really shows.
What I like best on Hermitcraft is they don't blow up bases maliciously (well most of the time). I love looking at builds so I get sad and frustrated if these get blown up just because of a little prank. Also, even if they did blow up another hermit's base by accident, they offer to compensate or help rebuild/clean and I think that should be the standard.
an add on to your existing point in the variety of viewers that hermitcraft attracts: they have a MASSIVE age range in regular viewers, i have never seen a smp, show, or general fan community with the audience age variety that hermitcraft has. i'm in my late teens, and i love hermitcraft, but so does my over 50 mom, and so does my 9 year old cousin!
hermitcraft's humor and tone is high quality and family-friendly, so it is appealing to both kids and adults alike. it's not childish or crude, and doesn't rely as heavily on current trends or pop culture references as a lot of other media right now, which makes it accessible to anyone. hermitcraft is good now, and will still be just as good 5+ years in the future.
i think a major contributing factor to all this is that the age range of the hermitcrafters themselves is large. they have an underlying maturity that brings a deep sense of stability to the server that few other smps have.
there really is something for everyone in hermitcraft!

Hermitcraft regularly bolsters my faith in humanity. There's something just so amiable and inspiring about a bunch of grown adults making a living by *checks notes* being nice to each other, building things in a video game for fun, and developing healthy, wholesome friendships?? It's a breath of fresh air in a world full of negativity. Hermitcraft is just good people being good people and having a blast while doing it, and I absolutely love that.

they are more slight refinements of the game rather than a mod tbh, with the proximity mod, you could get almost the same experience just using discord, which they did for 7 straight seasons, but the change of having it now include proximity adds to the realism and immersion, not a huge difference, but a big enough one to add a ton more enjoyable moments to the game
I do like the plug ins and stuff that they use, it adds so much to the viewing experience and really widens their limits (for example decked out getting amazing and automatic music) but I can never 100% agree with it anymore because of something joehills said a while ago. (I will get the point across in my own phrasing since I do not remember what he said, only his point.)
That one big downsides to it is that it isn't available for everyone like previous seasons have been. After the season ends they make the world available for download and if you want to download and play on the world you're going to need an amount of technical knowledge that probably many viewers don't have access too, there are a lot of children that watch and it would probably be a very disappointing experience to download the world only to several aspects being completely different to how it is on the server.

The only plug-in I kinda feel weird about is the recent addition of being able to make custom horns and discs. It's a minor thing that's mainly used for pranks, but it feels kinda off, combined with all the other "custom" things that have slowly become part of HC.

Hermits often don't look into changing the game, they choose to enhance the game, or in doc's case have as much fun as possible and occasionally break the game. Even in mods they use, simple vanilla enhancing mods: armour stand customization, mob heads, player heads, mini blocks, togglable invisible item frames, the ability to have custom textures, custom horns and disks, and even the proximity chat mod they use. None of these drastically change the game, they simply add more to a plain vanilla experience and make it so hermits can make the things they want too even better.
All of these enhance the ability to create and make things as detailed as they can get and want.
Edit because I have more thoughts:
Hermitcraft is also no stranger to dips in views, they've been around long enough to know that everything has it's lulls. Most of the hermits are older too, they have experience with far more things and more knowledge then lots of younger creators. As someone who wants to get into content creation both because of the unfortunate limits some of my disorders give me and because I love to create and perform, I look to them for my inspiration and attitude when it comes to making content. How to better my builds, my redstone, my attitude, and the way I engage with the world around me.
That last point in particular is absolutely true. It sounds cliche, but they aren't in it for the money. The money is something they make on the side, and for many of them its a stable enough full-time income that what they care about most is making fantastic content.

The Hermits provide good clean fun for everyone. Whenever I need some inspiration when building I turn to the Hermits. Doc's helping hand to artists, this years charity fund raiser, and yet, nothing takes them away from just playing and having fun. We all need to bring out that "little kid" in ourselves more often and the Hermits help a lot. My goodness, they even inspired a weekly update! Love them all to bits.
It’s really the variety of content and cross over. Mumbo brings in the red stone viewers viewers and scar brings in the builder viewers but they do a cameo and now you have red stone viewers watching scar because they fell in love with his personality in the cameo.
I also think Hermitcraft has that "wish fulfillment" aspect that also draws in audiences. Many of us may wish we had such a large friend group to play with (or at least stays active with us), or wish we had as much time to dedicate to games (some of those builds take full days to complete), or just wish we had some of their build talent.
I no longer play minecraft, but I feel as if I can live through the hermits through the Hermitcraft series.
Very eloquently put! Hermitcraft isn't a sole theme, or idea. Like you said, it's people doing what they want to do for fun, and though my phrasing is a bit cheesy I'll admit, that's what Minecraft should be all about. There will always be someone focusing on builds, redstone, storytelling, or anything they please.

That's true for sure. One of the main reasons I think that hasn't happened yet is timezone difficulty, which undermines the community aspect somewhat. It also has to be said Minecraft is much less prominent in communities which overall have less access to it in English, which dominates the market and obviously influences who Hermitcraft can support.
Totally agree that it wouldn't be a bad thing though.
They aren’t looking at new hermits tho, and they’d need to find a english speaking creator as someone not being mainly english would open the door to some difficulties
@@Xerczar yeah, and if they wanted to add someone they would need to be a close friend to at least one of the hermits if not more, and the odds of multiple hermits all being friends with a content creator who doesn't natively(or possibly even) speak english, has an incredibly different timezone, and is incredibly good at the game is incredibly low, of course there are ways to kinda bypass all of those, but it's so unlikely that it probably won't happen.
@@CarrotKing269 I know nothing about the Asian minecraft scene, but I think it's definitely possible to have an Asian hermit (once they're looking for new hermits) because pearl can manage with the timezone issue, and people like keralis, doc, and iskall show that there are people who have English as a second language are beloved on the server too

But if a Hermitcrafter stumbles upon an intresting channel they found which suits the hermitcraft narrative, then a vote is held wether they should be added.

whenever i'm having a bad day, it always gets a bit better when i see a hermitcraft youtube notification. whether it be grian with his chaotic stuff that's just fun to watch, or scar just being a chill wholesome guy, or *insert me rambling off a bunch of hermits and why i like them*, it always brings a smile to my face. it's just fun to watch.
Gday. You are right on the money with you're lovely vid. Hermitcraft has totally replaced TV for me and inspired my own channel. It has everything...comedy, action, and references real-life drama with solutions (I'm thinking of the passing of TFC and Bdubs honest chat about his loss a few years back). New hermits will continue to keep the wholesome culture, I'm sure. :)
I got into hermitcraft during the summer and have been loving every minute of it! I've watched 13 different hermits povs from season nine just because I'll see something happen in someone's episode then I go "Oh now I want to watch that other perspective" but of course I have to watch from the beginning so I don't miss anything
Excellent video! The most amazing thing in Hermitcraft is the friendship and respect between all the members. I love the creativity - both in the building, and also the storylines they come up with. The current situation with Ren The King has got me hooked to a point where I check for new videos from the Hermits constantly.

I agree with your reasons... but here 3 more:
4. Hermitcraft's popularity has attracted the very best RUclips, and Minecraft talent, putting together good creators, with very good Minecraft artists. This makes for excellent engaging content that rival many Netflix or Amazon shows.
5. Wholesome - The Hermitcraft creators made a conscious decision to "keep it clean" and and make content that people at all ages can watch. I'm 45 and would never EVER think that I would watch Gaming RUclips... yet, now for 4 years I have watched about 8 Hermit's videos regularly, and they are always good. I can show them to my nephews and not worry they will be dirty, or have anything bad in them. This has been consistent, and un-wavering.
6. Community - Videos like this one exist, and it's one of the parts that make watching Hermitcraft fun. I like to watch Hermitcraft Recap. I like watching highlight clips. I watch Imp & Skizz now do a non-Hermit podcast because I know them and their personalities. I care about whether Mumbo is doing ok, and whether he will come back. I appreciate Xisuma's deep dives on Minecraft. I like "Saerz's" meme round-up (when he puts it out). The "extra" you get with a good central base show (Hermitcraft) makes it better.

very well put. as someone that runs a server myself, one of my favorite things about hermitcraft is the attitude around rules. they do have rules, and you can tell that everyone respects them not because they have to but because they believe in the purpose of the rules. they're also loose rules that work with common sense and the respect they have for each other. when someone screws up and a prank goes too far, there's no argument.
another thing i think adds to what you said is that i highly doubt there is never any conflict between the creators, but that just adds to what makes them special. any conflict that happens happens behind closed doors, because they're mature adults that can come to a resolution without fans getting involved.

Loved the satisfying ending at the end
At this point every Hermit has their own pretty big communities. I remember when Doc had like 600k subs a year ago and now he's already reached 1mil. It's almost impossible to avoid Hermitcraft on the Gaming side of RUclips at this point, it's like no matter when you check it there's a Hermitcraft episode on Trending.
Love Hermitcraft because of the creativity and interactions of the Hermits. And that everything is played vanilla.
Interestingly enough, this video was recommended to me a year after its release.
Anyways, I do have one thing to add: The Hermits are all very mature, and I doubt an immature person would be allowed on the server. This ties into the drama point: There is little to no drama because this maturity and respect is so ingrained into the server.
An example: Just yesterday, Grian and Gem posted their respective footage of the game they made for Skizz to win back the items they "borrowed". They made sure to check in with Skizz before endangering those items. And they explicitly told their audience that they did so - simultaneously keeping drama among fans to a minimum and teaching especially younger fans about the importance of consent.
This is one of the things I love most about the server.
One big thing I think that plays to their favor is the relative seniority (in RUclips terms) the server has on other mc groups when it comes to their members. Most of them have been creating for more that 6-8 years, which helps with understanding how content creation works
You have managed to put into words what many people think but haven't said. I love the humour of hermitcraft which is never crude, and always appears sincere. This was a nice little video.

I’m not even a big fan of Minecraft, but I love Hermitcraft. I just find them very entertaining, I enjoy the shenanigans. Mostly because they keep it funny as heck but friendly! They don’t go too far, and if by chance they accidentally do, they help fix it. The fact that the majority of it is not scripted also appeals to me, I’ve tried to watch some others and while I do like quite a few of the people I just can’t get into how scripted a lot of it is.
Right like I love all the people from Empires but acting is definitely not their strong suit and they have too much scripting and sometimes it just comes off as very awkward!! I still watch people like SolidarityGaming and Smallishbeans because they’re the closest to the chill hermitcraft vibe, but yeah.
A great video once more! Even though the channel revolves solely on Minecraft, there is lots of variety with every upload or at least are certainly funny or interesting. And this is only the fourth proper upload! Can’t wait for future videos.

I’ve been watching Hermitcraft since middle school. Now, I’m a Junior in college and this video perfectly highlights why I’ve been watching it for so long. I’m also glad that you pointed out how impactful season seven was, truly, it was one of the brightest things in my life during such an isolated period.
One of my younger sisters has been a Dream SMP girl for a couple years now, however she’s been encouraging me to try Grian and Mumbo for almost a year. I started checking out their videos a couple months ago, and, as always, my sister has a fantastic grasp of what I like. Fun, silly, creative, clean. I may be almost 30, but I prefer content with minimal swearing and sex jokes and lots of emphasis on friendship. And also, despite all the shenanigans, HermitCraft is rather orderly at its heart, which I really like. (I LOVE Ace Attorney and Yu-Gi-Oh, which are the epitome of a lawful core which provides a solid foundation for a lot of crazy happenings.)
I watched hermitcraft a lot when I was like 7 or 8 and I honestly had forgotten about it for the last few years. This just opened a floodgate a memories for me, and it's crazy the nostalgia I get from this sort of stuff, like I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and now I'm in college and all the stuff that happened in between just crazy
It's just satisfying to see the world they build come to being, the storylines whether planned or improvised take place in these worlds unfold and the beautiful personalities that keep it all alive come together and enjoy their time through it all!
Hermitcraft is heaven on RUclips for me. It is an incredible thing how something so positive can be shared with everybody.

I am amazed at the wisdom and maturity of all the Hermits and I have been binge watching past seasons to get to know the people behind the blocky figures. They are all so individual and wholesome and kind. I am in my 60s and I recognize goodness.

Imma tell you what I think: theure all friends/friendly, they can be wholesome and still funny, their pranks aren't overboard, and they're helpful.
Even during the slight decline of Minecraft popularity during the 2017-2019, Hermitcraft was still striving. It might not have a sudden increase in popularity but it didn't have a sudden dip too. It's steady, and it shows how much the current fans enjoy it. Loyal to the server. As an avid viewer myself, you put it into words perfectly. They have wide varieties of content and the interactions just felt natural. Mainly because this server is actually just friends messing around.
It always amazes me how much they trust each other in terms of the shopping district, the pranks, and other stuff like that. Even the biggest pranksters in the server knows the limits of each hermits and never crosses them.
Every episode has something unique in them, and every hermit has something unique to them which creates incredible videos to watch. Love Hermitcraft and I don't think I'll stop anytime soon
I'm 50 and watch it religiously with my 13 year old daughter. The thing I love most is the friendship and kindness. What a great message to send to today's youth. ❤
Nice video. Season 7 was so good that I didn’t want it to end. I had to actually stop watching a few hermits as there was just too much stuff to keep up with. After watching Mumbo, Stress, Grian, Iskall, Xisuma, Keralis, Scar, B Dubs, Tango, Scar, and Impulse it was time for the next set of episodes…
Absolutely! There’s so many different ways to watch and even viewing the same events from different angles is brilliant, I personally watch Grian, Mumbo, Ren, Scar and Iskall regularly but the pure amount of fun and love they all pour in is amazing!!
One thing I love about HC is its truly all ages approach-- younger fans can especially get a giggle out of the silly roleplaying, older fans can really appreciate the advanced building tips from the likes of Scar and Bdubs, as well as follow along with Doc's advanced technical minecrafting. So many creators means you're likely to find one that fits exactly what you're looking for. (me, i'm always keeping an eye out for new videos from Joe :) and even if there's a creator you're less endeared by, it doesn't at all ruin the experience of watching others' videos.

I love your "creative template" analogy because you're absolutely right. Hermitcraft doesn't use templates, they make them. Large builds, minigames, server laws/economy, etc. They don't have a template of creative content because most of the Hermits don't seek those ideas out. They just happen to be playing Minecraft and ideas pop up every once in a while.

I really love how this was phrased. "Simple innocence". And it really does feel like that. Even with mischief and the very unsubtle (sometimes accidental) innuendos. Watchung hermitcraft is simple, the only drama is in good fun, and the highest stakes are just a set of shiny rocks that can be reprocured.
The only reason as to why I am not so big on SMP's or generally let's plays now a days is because people now tend to glorify the "pro" side of survival Minecraft, what I mean is that there no longer is a chill gameplay, build a hut, find basic ores, build a small crop farm, taking it slowly you know. Now a days is all about finding diamonds on your first day, enchanting on your second day, nether the third, people no longer take their time to chill in their world and try to make everything into a complicated rushed let's plays for the sake of content. I just missed the days in which a player built a small but cute house and lived in it through the entirety of their let's play and just chilled and did one thing at a time.

i think another huge reason it’s stayed so popular is that a lot of the people watching it currently have been watching at least one of the creators since they were young. there are very few content creators that manage to keep their content safe and enjoyable for younger children while also still appealing to that older demographic that has stuck around since THEY were the younger children watching- i think every creator on hermitcraft has managed that perfect balance.
there’s something incredibly special about the fact that i can enjoy an episode of hermitcraft just as much as i did when i was an eight year old!
i'm 16 and still love hermitcraft... and so do my two sisters. it's such a comforting, innocent, and most importantly fun series to watch!
I think if anything kills hermitcraft it will be burnout, since every season they feel like they have to do more and more, and go bigger and bigger, so the bases get bigger, the shops, the minigames. So it becomes difficult to complete any of them and have time for other things, and can become a season long slog to complete a goal. We've see a handful of the hermits need time away, and increasingly need time away. As someone who has watched mc videos for almost as long as there have been them, I've seen how massively things changed. From slow paced small scale projects, to fast pace large scale projects. From ones that focus an entire series on a small farm, to ones that need 30 hour time-lapses to communicate the scale of, and to fit into a single episode... and I honestly cant say I prefer one over the other personally, I am watching to relax, and enjoy someones personality, and their fun. The big projects are fun sometimes, but, if they cause entire swaths of things not to happen, and for people to take a break from the series as a whole, then maybe its not worth it?
A small project with a lot of heart will always seem big, but, a large project thats empty will just look big

Id say the main reason why people love hermitcraft is because hermitcraft is how we've all wanted to play minecraft. With friends, showing off our creativity and making a immersive world with stories and what not. When you look at younger groups like the dream smp or even that realm that you made with you're friends, its just people aganist each other, traveling 1000's of blocks away and grinding to get the best gear and most efficient farms (Which is why your realm doesnt last long btw).
But man hermitcraft is so addicting to watch, I really want to watch everyones perspective in every season but I can't help but keep rewatching Grians hermitcraft season 6 and 7 🤣
Yep I agree. I’ve been watching the Hermits for a few years now and I love how they basically keep the game vanilla. They let the game and the friends speak for themselves rather than trying to inject artificial excitement into it. I used to watch the How To Minecraft crew and that was their problem - too much injecting custom dungeons and such until it just kinda ruined what is cool about the vanilla experience. I’m glad to see the Hermits haven’t gone that route. Pure creativity + shenanigans with friends is excellent and doesn’t need spicing up to make it interesting.
Hermitcraft is something i come back to ever year or 2. It brings me back to times that feel long ago but also bring back my love for the game and the creativity is sparks. These creators mean a lot to me, and this video was a great reminder of that. thank you!

Love the video and analysis. I started watching in s4 and have gone up in the amount of hermits I watch each season. Honestly, one of my favourite things is just trying to watch the videos in order, because release order doesn’t always mean right film order and so one Hermit might show you something that someone built that you haven’t seen
Variety is the spice of life. That's one way of how to sum up hermitcraft itself. I don't typically like to hear about drama, but... the hermits really are brilliant with it. Hermitcraft really does speak for itself.
I've been watching since season 3, and though I'm sure there are other groups out there that make good content I've never felt the need to look anywhere else. HC is just so comfy and fun, you really nailed it

I think it would incite curiosity in the viewer thus making a higher likelihood of them clikcing on the video, moreover in the thumbnail, you could do something like include moments of all three aspects of hermitcraft, the grandeur of the scale the hermits usually build at, their hilarious interactions,and lastly something reflecting the simplicity of it which makes it so fun to watch.

I cannot help but smile at a group of friends having fun together. For me Hermitcraft is the jam. When I am feeling low I would watch Grian and Mumbo doing their shenanigans to lighten my mood and feel happy. I think this is because of how simple Hermitcraft feels, it's just a group of friends having a great time together and like I already said it's impossible to not smile at that. Also Grian never finishes his backs..... :)
I find that the hermits I watch change each season too as I don't have time to watch them all. This season my mains are Scar and BDubs. Previous season I think it was Grian and Mumbo that I watched the most. I'm watching the others too, but not episodal usually just when I'm wondering how they're doing.
One thing that makes Hermitcraft so great is that, at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of friends having fun and recording for other people to watch. It’s the definition of what a Minecraft Server should be. Simple and laid back.
I personally feel like Hermitcraft kept going because of vast creativity in their videos, variety of content be it within other games or within the world of Minecraft (even former Hermits I watched had a variety of content on both ends), and how they're just great human beings, with all the roleplaying, the storytelling, and even the pranking that entertains a variety of fans regardless of age or nationality. At the end of the day, they're generally great adults with content for various Minecraft aspects: building, redstone, storytelling, roleplaying, even silly shenanigans that entertained many people.
I also commend you on how you tackled on how they address drama among their fanbases, they really stand their ground over wanting fair game and a positive environment for all. One thing I kind of see within the Hermits is that, at the end of the day, their friendships still remain behind the camera shenanigans and behind the roleplays.
I appreciate this video so much. The sense of community between hermits and the fans make the content so enjoyable and I think this video shares this perfectly
Hermitcraft for me personally is a great way to escape reality. I get so immersed in every episode I watch, I even play MineCraft while playing Hermitcraft in the background because it’s just that good.
I smile and laugh when watching the Hermits which is rare for me to do nowadays with my personal problems I have going on.
Hermitcraft as a whole is just one big wholesome family and I’m fortunate enough to experience it with so many fans.
I’m so grateful to the creators like Scar, Grain, Bdubs, and Ren. They really help to brighten my day when I’m feeling down. I hope that one day I can be a positive light for many like they do.
Given that a lot of the Hermits drop their videos on Friday and I am in Europe, Hermitcraft has become the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" that somehow went out of fashion.

I thought your essay was fantastic but with 25 active hermits (and several former hermits) you showed one hermit’s builds 80% of the time. Scar & Bdubs had maybe 19% with the rest of the hermits 1%. For a video about Hermitcraft it was very unbalanced.
Still, as I said, I agree with your points why Hermitcraft is so special and I thought your analogy of a varied diet of an animal being key to its survival being why Hermitcraft doesn’t go out of style pretty good.
Overall, it’s a beautiful tribute to my favourite SMP and its members.

Im only partway through the video but i think another point of success is that all of them are absolutely fucking insane in the best way. Theyre good at what theyre doing and its actually nuts.
Theyre also all pretty good friends and get along, which makes interactions enjoyable and not stressful

I’m in my 20s and hermitcraft is such a joy. It’s the only MC series I watch, really. Even when they play up server conflict for content you can tell none of it is serious. One moment hermits will pvp to the death and the next moment they’ll compliment each others’ builds or help in projects. They have struck a great balance between engagement in their content as well as a healthy disconnect to keep things in a mature perspective. It’s refreshing!
I think one of my favorite parts of Hermitcraft besides how calm and innocent it is, is how inspiring it is. When I watch hermitcraft, I want to jump on minecraft and build out my own ideas, my own stories. That is the entire intended premise of what minecraft is.
I also like how regularly, not every hermit is involved in everything. Even server wide things have people chilling doing their own thing if they need to. And people are off the server for weeks or months, but its not like their relevancy is going to totally die because its not just them promoting themself. Etho coming back was anticipated by other hermits and he was featured in their videos, so it reminded and flagged to lots of people to go check him out again. And if you watch other hermits regularly, you have regular reminders of oh, I wonder when Iskall will be back. I think it gives them more security to take breaks, and you can tell. They don't seem to have the same kind of pressure to push push push for a certain thing, and they're all really respectful of each other's time and energy which encourages their fans to be as well. And the only time any kind of youtube competitiveness, or stats comparisons at all, is mentioned that I have EVER heard from one of the hermits was Grian joking about Mumbo gaining more subscribers in his time off than Grian was getting. And between them, their stats are so enormous it doesn't matter. When I first branched out from Mumbo and Grian I honestly thought everyone was just as enormous, because everyone is referenced with pretty equal/appropriate reverence.
They're also really respectful of like, whose content is whose if that makes sense. When people fall out of a competition, they don't show the final results so we have to go and actually watch the people involved. And people with the dare stick regularly encourage you to go watch them be dared/follow through on the dare, and won't always show it. I think that also really helps reduce drama: you can't be steadfast with one hermit and still know what is going on in the wider hermitsphere, because people don't spoil things for each other. If you want the full story on something, you have to go let yourself be endeared by Keralis or Bdubs or who have you, so its hard to "pick sides" at all.

I find myself rewatching seasons I'd already watched through three different hermits.. because with so many hermits, I'm undoubtedly going to follow a new one, and want to remember what they did in past seasons!
I think this video missed acknowledging that hermitcraft is more accessible than a lot of other series. There's jokes and intense scenes, but there's never any sort of sensitive content or cursing or potentially triggering things without very adequate warning. It's really great to know that I can watch a video without getting my heartrate up while still being excited and wanting everyone to succeed.

This is so well said. And yes it is so bingable 😂 I have rewatched all of Grian’s Hermitcraft videos at least 4 time (they are great for when I am working on a painting). Hermitcaft also has, for the most part, the friendliest community I have found in the minecraft community, which is really shown by the Hermitcraft Recap. Everything in and around Hermitcraft feels real because it is. I think one of the only times they have added a plan/plot to the server was in season 8 with the moon, and that was only because it was a bit of a filler season before the Cave and Cliffs update.

i would also add their unique socializing since almost ever hermit's video i watch will have another hermit in it and thats really the main reason why i watch hermitcraft. but absolutely love the video

also another element of its survivability is the periodic resets that clear alllegiances, aesthetics that people have got trapped in and solets everyone start fresh with new groups, builds and characters.
