Best beach in the world is Whitehaven in the Whitsundays near Proserpine in Nth Queensland. Try to do that before you die. I lived in Brisbane for 15 years. As far as cities go, it is one of the best. The 50cent fares are a recent thing, and not necessarily staying. Enjoy them while you can. Brisbane is to host the Olympics in 2032. I won't be around, but they are certainly getting the infrastructure in place for that. I hate all cities, but if I had to choose from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide (I haven't been to Perth but I believe it's beautiful. I have a sister who lives there), I would definitely choose Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast has lots of amazing beaches and things for the kids. I also lived there for four years. Queensland is far and away the best state.

It's strange how we can stop appreciating the things on our doorstep and only complain about the negative things. I'm so glad you loved it and hopefully you guys visit again soon. By the way, I'm not sure if Tony mentioned to you, but those $0.50 fares for public transport was only introduced this year - as a 'cost of living' initiative from the state government, but more to win votes and the election. They didn't win the election, however the new government have continued the initiative. Without it, the fares were some of the highest in the world. That CityCat ride you took on the river may have cost about $5 - $10 per person!
Regarding the US visa interview--keep checking the appointments as they open up from time to time--they recently opened 250,000 new appointments for example. A faster alternative may be to go to a third country like Singapore and interview at the US embassy there, which is something the US goverment explictly allows and even encourages--they made a RUclips video describing that specific scenario for Indians.
Regarding public transport being 50c, that's only a new thing and it was only a trial for a period of time. I live 40 mins from the city and it, up until recently, it was like $6.50 per trip. On the city planning perspective, there is only SOME thoughtful planning but a majority of the suburbs are thoughtless sprawl (that's extending further out due to that poor planning) that cause traffic jams daily because of poor design. Southbank is one of the few places that is well designed for walkability, the 'beach' is great, to be clear though it's not very common of a place in Brisbane or its suburbs. Brisbane and Australia is a fantastic place and would be a great holiday destination.
The 50c fares have been made permanent fyi. Quite a few Queensland towns have a Southbank style lagoon. Even Greater Brisbane has quite a few water playgrounds for a city. I live 5km from Brisbane and can walk to 4 supermarkets and 50+ shops/schools etc. But further out it is American style suburbia dominated by the car. Though it does often have much more public transport compared to most American suburbs.
@@newbris Yes I know, however it's permanent "for now" until the next government decides that it costs too much. I never said there weren't any other lagoon places (Redcliffe is another example that comes to mind, and a few of them I wouldn't consider common) however my point was walkabiity, and for the majority of suburbs they're just not that great. In fact, when I used to live in Bald Hills / Bracken Ridge the only option was really a car to get anywhere otherwise you were at the mercy of the slim pickings bus service (although I used my pushbike). Even newer places like North Lakes is fine if you're in the shopping centre, but as soon as you venture out into the rest of the suburb it's car central. I'm sure it has better public transport than American suburbs (although you would have to compare with a major city outskirts, however I'm not comparing to America I am explaining how it is currently. If you don't have a car or bike, you have to walk for ages to get anywhere in most of the outer suburbs and god forbid you have to interact with the cars in the area because it's a nightmare (even just walking around Lutwyche to get to the shopping centre from the train station for me was an effort due to the traffic and lack of walkable spots, crossing side roads is dangerous and I nearly got hit many times).
