Hi. I'm Colombian. It is the country with largest aeroid biodiversity. It's also a country where begonia abound. I'm writing this in hope it helps.
I'm not sure your message in terms of temperature is necessarily accurate.
In Colombia we have the Andes mountains. We see begonias most often at 2,500 meters and higher in the cloud forest. Therefore, we consider begonias to be "cool climate plants". Colombian begonias thrive in temperatures of 45F - 80F or 7C - 27C.
The issue with begonias is, they are highly susceptible to change. They don't like a change in place because it affects the LIGHT to which they're accustomed. The same can be said for Anthuriums. They also don't like a change in humidity. Remember, they come from a cloud forest. But, the most important thing for begonias and Anthuriums is they don't like changes in light.
The cooler and more humid an environment you can provide within the range above, the happier they will be.
So, I want to dispell the misconception that tropical houseplants are used to warm climates. Most are not, they can withstand warm climates, that's different.
In terms of climate changes however, begonias are appreciative of much lower temperatures at night and higher temperatures during the day. That is what happens in cloud forests. So optimal temperatures for begonias is 15C during the night and 25C during the day. This also applies to most Anthuriums.
I would even dare say, that is the ideal temperature for most Philedendron and Monsteras (El Chocó is an exception because it comes from a very hot pluvial forest where it rains more than in the Amazon), but Philedendron and Monsteras more forgiving with the heat than begonias are. Careful: more heat, doesn't mean they are OK with less humidity, although again, they are also more forgiving than begonias or Anthuriums. I would strongly dissuade people from putting their plants near a heater.
So, I encourage all plant owners to investigate not only the region they are endemic, also look at the altitude.
I now live in Philadelphia. The best thing you can do to avoid root rot during winter is buy a $14.00 moisture meter. Plants absorb different water quantities during winter than in summer, not so much due to temperature changes, while changes in humidity play a factor, it is mostly due to changes in availability of light.
The best thing you can do for the overall health of your plants is:
    • Buy a moisture meter and water according to what it tells you, not your watering schedule.
    • Buy a humidifier AND a fan. Keep the fan on at all times and humidity between 55% and 65%. Plants would appreciate more humidity, but you have to live there too.
    • Do save on energy costs at night. Let your temperatures drop to 15C - 17C / 58F - 62F and watch them thrive. There's nothing wrong with wearing a sweater/jumper, we'll survive. Many of us Latinamericans live in those conditions all year round; the tropics are not all beaches.
    • Lastly, if you want to see your plants THRIVE and grow in winter, give them light. Who needs Christmas lights when you have gorw lights?

"practice some acceptance of pests". Such a good way to express the ongoing dealing with pests in a large collection of plants

Hello and Merry Christmas as we say here in the States. I find that when my plants are looking peeky in the Winter I add worm compost on top of the soil and work it in with a plastic fork. It's especially helpful if you have a plant that's in definite need of a Spring repot -seems to help it keep going until it gets its new home.

Thanks for such a gentle, chatty but informative video. Perfect for this time of year, don't need flashy videos. Just a calm gentle voice talking at me while i get on with other stuff. :)

Hi Amy. All the way through the video I was trying to think of any issues I might have in the short winter months of my subtropical climate and I’m happy to say none come to mind. I used to overwater my houseplants but now that I have it under control I’ve noticed that fungus gnats are no longer an issue, which is a huge relief. Thanks for sharing some important information with regard to the winter growing season. Best wishes for the holidays and I look forward to more interesting videos from you in the new year.

Hello, this video was right on time for me.We live in Ohio definitely the cold state. I was just telling my husband my Hoya Latifolia Sulawesi GPS 8867 had 4 big beautiful leaves & at a blink of a eye out of nowhere 2 leaves turned yellow. It broke my heart & this is my 3rd yr going thru a Winter with plants & never a issue . Its just my Hoyas & none of my other plants are having issues. I took the advice of a commenter on another channel & checked for pests & all is well there. I keep the fan on to circulate the air & the humidifier at least 4 hrs some days. My Monstera is shooting out 2 big leaves..go figure lol. I will take your advice & eliminate the yellow ones😢. Thank You for your informative video..Peace & Love to you also
