The second generation DS 4 compact premium hatch deserves more recognition than it'll probably get. For us, this is the most interesting and distinctive car of its kind in this part of the market. There are sharp looks, a stand-out cabin - and the option of clever damping technology too. PHEV engine tech's there if you want it and all the powertrains are efficient. In short, there's lots to like if you don't mind the premium pricing.
The Stellantis Group's DS premium brand has yet to gain much traction in the UK. Here's where that has to change, with this car, the second generation DS 4.
A quick DS history to start with. The brand launched in stand-alone form in 2015, mostly re-badging sportier Citroens until it could launch its own design, the DS 7 Crossback SUV, in 2017. Since then, we've had the first generation DS 4 model, which sold between 2015 and 2019 and which almost nobody bought. Then the small but rather curious-looking DS 3 Crossback. Followed more recently by the even rarer DS 9 upper mid-sized saloon. Nothing though, to really get people talking. But this second generation DS 4 just might.
Surprisingly, for the time being anyway, DS isn't making a slightly larger compact SUV than the DS 3 Crossback. Which means that this DS 4, though really a compact premium hatch taking on the Audi A3 Sportback, the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class, must also try and appeal to people who might want a compact premium SUV like, say, an Audi Q3, a BMW X1 or a Mercedes GLA. That's a lot to ask - from a car with a lot to prove. Can it deliver?
    Let's find out.

Very nice review but as all car journalists you are obsessed with the fact that DS4 shares parts with Peugeots and Vauxhalls... However nobody mentions that an Audi is basically a Skoda or a Seat

Totally agree. But I used to have a Vauxhall Astra'19 Elite Nav Turbo and I really loved it as a car for a single person, the engine was very nice as it was the comfort of the car. So, it's not a particularly bad thing and I feel like it's all about brand snobbism... I'm thinking of getting either DS4 or Volvo XC40 or the new Vauxhall Grandland plug-in hybrid - they represent much better value and come fully-loaded compared to German brands.

My DS4 comes next week I’m looking forward to driving it, I’ve not had any test drives or even seen the car physically but the style Caught my eye and the reviews all seem to be very positive! Here’s to hoping it lives up to its reputation!

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Thank you, your review was excellent by far the most informative I’ve seen on the DS4 online! I’ve opted for the Trocadero EAT8 model in pearl crystal as I couldn’t get the lacquered grey unfortunately! Thank you for the review all the best 🙂

Why is the Peugeot 308 in the description?
    Cut and paste error there!

I’m 5’10” tall and with the driver’s seat set for me, I literally couldn’t fit in the back seat! I would hasten to add that I actually like to sit relatively near to the wheel so I hadn’t set the driver’s seat too far back!

Liked the looks , phev plug in version with total 225hp seemed the one to have with adapted suspension and a sunroof . At first , I had 2 sacrifices v my older petrol SUV , the driving height and a little cr😢amped in back seat space, BUT THEN i thiught about the plug in and petrol costs , 1 have two 90 mile trips pw . The other 4 days from 5: to 30miles pday with 1 day undriven , Financially initial cost of car and excess road tax yr 2 onwards is a extra annual expense. NOW back to mpg . I don't believe over a year that in my case I will save the planet or have a dEcent enough saving in fuel costs v a standard 1.2 petrol only rivoli or trocadero which is 300 kilo lighter . Won't have adaptive suspension included with top spec but will gain a slightly bigger boot space.
Price wise new 10 k less . Used 22 plate low milage about 8k less . Just sayin

Electrical cars are a scam. Had ds4 hybrid for 2 days in tenerife no charging points anywhere. Could not charge, going on petrol only without battery not economical. Never again... It's a shame because the car interior and extetior looks were nice

If you charge it nightly at home then you could drive it to work and back on electricity only.
