uhm... of course you do! go slay that thang! thanks for the intel on the pool. wonder how these pool waves compare to each other (surf ranch CA, n-land austin, bsr, etc)? late night drive down hwy 12....dark! i'd take it over the city any time though :)
dude, this video is very helpful to understand the experience at BSR and glad it was not boring either. Thanks Brett for the insight....glad you had fun!
Hopefully the more wave pools there are across the US, will keep more kooks out of the line-up & in the pool! It definitely is a fun tool to have at your disposal, I surfed Kelly's Surf Ranch twice & I really do love it. Perfect for working on tricks & just having endless perfect barrels. I'll have to try BSR, the water definitely looks different than the Ranch, it looks almost like liquid clay. Good surfing!
Best video about the wave yet! Would love to see you go back for the air section. And hate to disagree but Whataburger is life! Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits make the world go round.
Great video Brett, excellent review of the place. You answered all my questions that the website did not cover, can't wait to book a trip. Was out near you yesterday in OBX, you were tearing it up as usual.
For those of you that have FOMO: The key thing you need to take away from this is that the wave pool is genuinely TRICKY. I had 3 hours in the pool. Cheyne cranked up the advance wave after 15 minutes of us being in there and left it on the rest of the time. I'm a pretty good surfer and I feel like I needed about 6 hours to really figure it out. The current swirls around in the pool and it's difficult to stay lined up in the take off zone. That swirling current gets into the wave face as they transition from rights to left and you get a really gnarly chop. And the wave is so damn fast.... You're not getting barrels every time. If pros are struggling (somewhat), just imagine the learning curve for you... I had more fun riding my fish in thigh high slop yesterday afternoon with the sun and the breeze and the dolphins and no pressure to perform in a specific moment. No $10 waves to mess up. Now if that wave pool was in my backyard and I could have go after go at it, holy crap it would be amazing.
Also, as of Thursday of last week, they have changed how the wave runs. They aren't running the 3 waves in a set right behind one another. They've doubled the gap in between each of the waves. That has made the individual waves a lot faster... Personally, I like a more playful wave with a rippable face.
Brett, as an OC CA native with lots of hours in the Pacific, it was great to watch your BSR trek. Now that our daughter, her San Clemente surfing husband & our perfect 3 grandkids just moved to Waco, we're intrigued with BSR, especially after the 10 year old twins learned from their uncle, our son, to surf at Doheny this Summer. And, as an ol' skool barefooter, gotta try that there! Also, we appreciate your faith in and following of the One who makes the waves. Shaka, y'all.
1st time watching one of your videos and as soon as I saw you huck that f**kin huge 360 booter and land it in the intro I knew I had to watch the rest!!! Great video!🤯🤘
Sickvideo so impressed with how much knowledge and good surfing you put into this video. Nice to see a down-to-earth regular guy with crazy skills answer so many of my questions I am
+Brett Barley GREAT review! Def gives a feel for what the trip experience to Texas is like. Kudos to BSR for opening their wavepool to up to the public so quickly even with the maintenance issue this still feels like a business or effort I would would be stoked to support as opposed to that other one out here in Cali that's all locked up behind a gate only for the privileged and elite to participate. Well done Brett Barley and BSR!!! Byron San Clemente, CA
As a Texan sometimes I find WB disgusting. Find a Mom and Pop place that makes a fresh homemade burger or make one yourself. I will add though that sometimes WB hits the spot just as sometimes an I/O does too. Greasy and hot days don't mix well to me anymore though.
Barley coming through with a sick edit. Best info on BSR yet! My edit will be coming soon, but won't be this well put together. I'm just an average Joe. Brett, you need to try Whataburger again. They have the best fries and burgers. You must have went on a bad day. 9 out of 10 times their food is always hot and fresh. They don't make it till you order it. Call the store manager at that location, and I bet the next time your down they'll give you free lunch.
Brett, great video. Very thorough. One question I have is what is the difference between the 2 public sessions "Intermediate" and "Expert". I keep hearing mention of Advanced, but I only see three available sessions "Beginner", "Intermediate" and "Expert". Thanks!
They have changed the system since I was there and now it operates much differently. It was beginner and Advanced at one point but now they have the wave settings for 3 skill levels.
Awesome vid! What size waves do we get for Public sessions? Would you recommend a HPSB, hybrid or groveler type for waves of that power? What's the difference between their advanced and intermediate wave settings?
So at the time I was there they weren't running Advance/Intermediate waves... just one setting all day. But I'd assume it's the same as what you see in the video, and then any beginner sessions would be dulled down. I'd say a mix between a grovler/shortboard is good... something Epoxy like i mentioned in the video, but with a narrow tail. but honestly thats all about preference and ability. If you watched the video, that whole second session is a public session... so those are the waves you get in the Public sessions.
Ridiculously sick air sections and chunky barrels! Unbelievable air reverses - backside and frontside! HUGE BOOOOOSTS! :P Also, very informative - question ... has anyone surfed NLAND? How is it in comparison to BSR? Im looking to book a trip out as soon as possible. Thank you for this video and hopefully you (or anyone) can answer my question. Thanks and cheers from NJ!
I’ve never been to Nland, but the handful of people I saw at BSR that had, said it doesn’t even compare. Nland is more expensive, for less waves, and they are mushy.
Yeah I'm really interested in closing point 1.5 cause I've never surfed freshwater and was already wondering how noticeable the difference in float is.. the shortboard I currently ride def has issues plaining on softer mushier days in the ocean so prob need something that rides that stuff better before taking it here huh?
Kurtis Nelson I ride Epoxies in the ocean on softer days anyway... and they feel better even then, but in the pool it’s a must. My normal shortboard felt ok in the morning, but when I rode epoxy in afternoon I had wished I was on it all day.
At the time of this video shoot, it was a grey color mixing the fresh sand/dirt they brought in for the beach with the already off-color of the water cause it’s from a natural hot spring. BUT they did eventually start dying it electric blue
Aloha Brett, what size board were you riding bruddah? Did fin configuration play a role surfing in wave pool compared to ocean wave? Did you use small, medium, or large fins? Are leashes required in pool? Thanks for the informative video. I just ate some whataburger & about to jump in my shower also 🤣🤙🏾 Mahalos Brett......
You'll want to wear a leash, or you'll be missing waves chasing your board. I just rode the same fins i ride anywhere... so don't stray for what youre confident on. i was riding a 5'9" shortboard, thats an epoxy, and just a little wider... same thing i'd ride in softer rippable waves at home.
Great video, and surfing but the thumbs up was earned by "Fast-food place called whattaburger... it is sooo bad!! I feel like I wanna go shower after that meal" hahahha
I may have missed it because of jumping around, but did you say whether the wave quality for the public sessions are as good as the private ones? I've seen videos of normies surfing what was supposed to be the expert wave in public sessions and it looked mushy, with tiny, if any barrels.
An hr south of me. Cool, but I'll wait for the $60/hr to come down. I guess my Rincon PR beach house will have to do for the time being. Expensive airfare....but free perfect waves. :-)

I'm super curious about the water color and condition. Its looks like split-pea soup. Nevermind. I didn't have enough patience. Thanks for that info. 😀🌊🏄
Regarding Whataburger, if you mean bad as in cholesterol / fat, then yeah...however if you mean bad as in taste, then you unfortunately found a poor franchise. I moved to OBX from Texas, and that's one of my treats I truly miss😁
Vaughan Heilman it was just like any Burger King Or McDonalds I can remember from when I was younger. The ingredients and flavor just felt so grossly processed it was disgusting.
Kinda thinking the same, but also thinking most of the locals have probably never surfed before and might just be an occasional outing for them. Any local who gets hooked might start thinking a crap apt in OC or Santa Cruz comes out cheaper. Or Florida - never been there myself. Texas has a coastline, but negligible surf.
Well if you watched, the private and public 3 wave sets are the same... The private session you have the option to run whatever you want though, like i said, the longer barrel, the wedge barrel, the wedge air section. The public session just rotates from lefts to rights every 15min, to give everyone (goofy and regular foot) the same opportunities.
I don't believe so for the private sesh, as they are pretty pricey. Superbrand was given 3hrs of private sessions for being a Park sponsor, that's how we got in that way.
To me the waves just need to be a tad bigger before I'll opt to go there vs a true surf destination like Mexico, Indo, etc.. Perfect place if you're a frothing grom though =)
Fair call for sure. 👍🏼. Hopefully one day! I know they can make the waves bigger with bigger mechanics, but then the cost isn’t profitable. Gonna dream till then.
It's just the color of the ponds and reservoir they pull the water from in the surrounding area... coupled with the sand sediment they dumped along the edge of the pool to create a beach.
It's just the color of the ponds and reservoir they pull the water from in the surrounding area... coupled with the sand sediment they dumped along the edge of the pool to create a beach. I explained it at the 15min mark ;)
I wouldn't get in "water" that looks more like a pond of some kind of chemical than actual water. I'm sure they told you that sand is the reason, but it isn't. Just look at the "water" in the lazy river. The sediment would settle in the lazy river if the sand was the reason for the murky off color, but the water quality is the same. They clearly added some sort of chemical in an attempt to make it look like ocean water and it didn't work.
How do you know it was "some kind of chemical" that is harmful? There are a ton of things they could have used to make it look like this that are perfectly harmless.
Interesting comments about not being able to read the waves. In the ocean you know the first 20 yards of a wave before you even take off most of the time.
Every surfer belongs in the ocean... Wave Pools aren't made to replace the ocean, that is impossible, and no ones intent either. They are just made as a source for when there's no surf, or for those who live inland, or in areas (like Texas) which rarely have decent waves. It's a great addition to surfing...
Brett Barley also now that I think about I think a lot of us want to see you ride Kelly's wave. Give the world a human cannon ball demo they will appreciate.
It's not a chlorinated pool... It's water pumped from a live spring reservoir. I'm not saying it's super clean... but getting it crystal clear is unlikely.
WHO THINKS I NEED TO GO BACK FOR A PRIVATE SESSION ON THAT AIR SECTION???
Brett Barley you gotta go... It looked so fun. I’m sure they’ll get it all ironed out by the time you return.
Brian you think you could change your last name to Toledo after a Month of trainings? I'll Invest I want 30%
uhm... of course you do! go slay that thang! thanks for the intel on the pool. wonder how these pool waves compare to each other (surf ranch CA, n-land austin, bsr, etc)? late night drive down hwy 12....dark! i'd take it over the city any time though :)

Thanks for the informative vlog. Definitely looking into a trip to BSR.. and always stoked on your edits....

great job.. best public wave pool in world currently
I think so too. You have to bring Slater donuts and cut his grass to surf his pool. bah hahaha.
I think so too. You have to bring Slater donuts and cut his grass to surf his pool. bah hahaha.
I love living in Texas only thing I wish we had was mountains to snowboard and better waves
You and me both. Maybe a bullet train to summit County CO
As a Texan, im hurt that you thought Whataburger was disgusting :(
I know you guys have better food than that. haha It's nothing against Texas :)
As a Texan fuck fast food
Sometimes Whataburger is bomb idk... fast food in general is pretty fucked.. but as Californian from Texas, I think In n out is much better and fresh
Blaise i know 😭

Question, does anybody know how many waves you can realistically ride in one hour of the public session?
Hope you had a blast! Hello from Texas.

that kind of fast food is just not for me... but its good to know I likely went to a bad apple. haha
What boards did you ride while you were there
what kind of shortboards do they have for rent
Is that Tony Magnusson's son Cheyne? Awesome! Awesome park! Wish I could go!
You did this BSR vlog best yet
Brett, what type of boards would you recommend for Waco. I’m finally getting there in August and wondering what to take with me.
epoxy boards good for smaller waves... but its a punchy wave, so don't go too wide.
Mr. Barley could absolutely break some hearts/ruin some peoples day back on the wqs/wct, would make those contests worth watching again for sure
Had me Grinning watching you surf.
legit feedback finally.
When you say PU boards bog? How bad do they. Or explain.
How does it work ? Is it the same system than the kelly slatre one ? It looks different
It uses air, and separate chambers to force the water out, so they can do endless combinations of waves. Design is completely different from Slaters
how do you establish priority/rotaion during the public session.... I'm not used to waiting my turn ;)
nvr mnd
Yea Brett! Ripping!
Sweet bonus frogging segment. Love your channel!
Awesome video dude, thanks for the tips!
Did y'all try NLand in Austin too?
Brett, sick video BSR looks awesome gonna have to check it out myself. Whataburger isn't what your looking for in life.
Slim pickings on places to eat after 9 there... someone suggested it to us so we tried. Immediately regretted it upon walking inside haha.
The takeoff is tricky... I kooked it.

Anthony Biello Nland is for beginners. This pool is better if you know how to surf.
I’ve never been to Nland, but the handful of people I saw at BSR that had, said it doesn’t even compare. Nland is more expensive, for less waves, and they are mushy.
Thank you - that was exactly the answer I was looking for. i definitely want to experience one of the AWM machines. Thanks!
Thanks man I'm looking for a hollow wave with air sections and BSR looks like the spot. I really appreciate the response. Cheers!
At 19:47 I’ve got the same corcicle bottle lol
No special sticker for painting the wall? By looking at how dry it is I can tell it takes a keen snap/turn to spray it
How much does it cost for a public session
i think this looks better then then kelly's wave pool, i like that its difference in the waves

Chest high on average.
What's up with the water color?
Just heard your explanation. Doesn't look like sand. Looks dyed.
At the time of this video shoot, it was a grey color mixing the fresh sand/dirt they brought in for the beach with the already off-color of the water cause it’s from a natural hot spring. BUT they did eventually start dying it electric blue

Song at 8:20 please! Great vid
I'd love to try it but the wave looks tricky. Id probably kook out at 50 yrs old I just don't have the quickness and flexibility anymore. Aaaah to be 20 and ripping again.
It is a bit bizarre on the takeoff, but after that it's a smooth ride, and wave #1 is the easiest. I don't think i rode but one of them in this video.
OK i've been watching wave pool waves for as long as they have been going and surfing oceans for many years but i have never asked. What is the deal with the milky water?

What's going on with the colour of the water. it looks soupy
It's just the color of the ponds and reservoir they pull the water from in the surrounding area... coupled with the sand sediment they dumped along the edge of the pool to create a beach.
i explained it at the 15min mark ;)

trey surf - I’ll have to look into those. :-)
Interesting comments about not being able to read the waves. In the ocean you know the first 20 yards of a wave before you even take off most of the time.
Must have been a crappy whataburger. People love it.
People love McDonalds too...
Haha true
What about the brain eating amoeba?
Trust me you belong in the ocean I am sure it's fun but your like a great white shark you can't live in a tank.
Brett Barley I agree with you.
Brett Barley also now that I think about I think a lot of us want to see you ride Kelly's wave. Give the world a human cannon ball demo they will appreciate.
Need to add stingrays
😂😂😂
Or at least some fish to catch
Dude, I can't believe you don't like whataburguer hahaha, Texans may get offended.
Texas most definitely has in the comments since posting this haha.
@@brettbarley lmao, hey, we can't make everybody happy.
Haha I loved every other part of Texas ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The water is gross. I’m a certified pool operator and that shit is nasty.
I could have that water crystal clear regardless of sand lol
It's not a chlorinated pool... It's water pumped from a live spring reservoir. I'm not saying it's super clean... but getting it crystal clear is unlikely.
Brett Barley they could turn it into a salt water system and put some huge sand filters on it and it would be perfect
4:21 to skip all the self-indulgence
Evening glass or evening bite? Either way your ripping lips!
