    Agree with everyone here in that this was one of the most useful tutorials I've seen but what made it even better was showing some of the take offs not made. I hate not making take offs so often I will choose the safer option, which means missing out on possibly the best waves. Seeing that even the best take a fall is actually encouraging and has fired me up to take more risks on the take off. Great work.

      @@brettbarley Hey Brett, Im 6'5 and even though ive been surfing shortboards and in general for a few years now, I still struggle to pop up without using my knee a tad when surfing a shortboard, which is a massive hinderance. I can however do it on my big thick longboard, do you have any tips between making that transition? I find it hard to unfold my lanky legs haha

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  5 лет назад +10

      @@sambowden890 It's just a matter of practice and repetition. Once you do something enough, you're bound to improve. Try riding a shorter board in smaller waves first... compared to a longboard, you have to be super quick on your feet to get up and ride the wave with speed. So even though it may not be as fun as longboarding small waves, it'll force you to learn to pop up quicker.

    Quite a fun challenge in trying to come up with any details you might have missed! This has to be one of the best tutorials I've ever seen.
    Maybe this is a valid suggestion: it has to do with observing the details of the ripples on the water's surface. Check 3:08 in this vid, and you'll see an example of what I mean - on the wave face, there are darker lines tracing from the bottom left up to the top right (from our perspective). These lines can give you an idea of how best to enter the wave. As you're still paddling, you're aiming in-line with these, and after you drop and begin to set your rail, you'll be cutting across them with a somewhat perpendicular line to them. Essentially, the subtle textures on the water surface can give you clues about the best lines to take.

    Brett, well done, some of the best commentary I've heard in decades in how you intelligently go through each step and showing the board in position to your turns . Your the surfer that can do seminars on ' how to ' all the ' what ifs '. Go for da tube

    Man, this is the best surfing tutorial I’ve seen. I’ve spent years scratching my head wondering what I’m doing wrong... I’m not saying I’m going to be instantly better after watching this, but at least I’ve got an actual idea on what I should be doing in these situations vs just hoping for the best 😂 thanks so much, please keep it up!

    Brett... I can't begin to explain how much this video has helped! I realize now how I've been approaching most barreling waves from the wrong angle.. figuratively and literally! I've never seen it explained like this before and I've watched a lot of how to vids on barrel riding. Can't wait to hit my local break tomorrow with this newfound insight. Thanks dude! You have my sub :)

    Thanks for this video I learned alot. As a new surfer it felt natural to grab my rail on backside to make my turn and it was interesting to hear you say the same thing. My dream since I was a kid was to get inside a barrel. 8ft foamy last year now a 6'6" swallow tail. Got my first 6 foot wave during the most recent NC Hurricane Larry.

    This is the best thing I've seen/read on getting tubed anywhere. So sick that you're putting this kind of stuff out. Would love to see more of this on all aspects of technique!

    Amazing. I didn't know who you were before but Brett Barley now I know you're a surf guru. It takes a bit of genius to be able to teach things in such simple terms. I've subscribed hoping to see more. You may have given me the seeds for me to finally make it out of a barrel. Thank you so much.

    Backside drop-in technique just blew my mind. Grabbing rail and allowing your arm motion to dictate vertical/ lateral movement along the wave. Can't wait to apply this!

    Okay... now a few things are making sense, including why some people seem to go the wrong way! And why I get pounded so often at take off on hollow waves. This video is super useful, thanks so much. However I am wondering how achievable it is for simple mortals to backdoor a steep wave. Will try ... if I'm not too scared!
