For real, I cannot understate how helpful your videos they are. The only thing I think that could help more is a POV video with a mouth GoPro. I mean when I watch these it’s like I have a personal surf coach. Also, what Apple Watch band is that!? Haha
So good!!! Even more Stoked for this weekend now! Frontside- arm inside leg is a total game changer. Backside-turning your front foot and then allowing that heel to come off the board for more mobility and a lower squat 🤯. Thanks for taking the time to find the old clips and I think I speak for all of us when I say .....film more when it's smaller!!!
That’s where surfing is crazy😂 all these intricate technical adjustments that need to be made in split seconds in order to come out the other end of that tube. Thanks for the tutorial! Extremely useful, can’t wait to integrate these techniques into my surfing🤙🏼 If you could put together a tutorial on how to position yourself when doing some big backhand snaps, that would be epic!
Brett, thank you , this is pure gold. I did two barrels in my life and try on each wave to get that bliss again. Got clipped literally hundreds of times, but that’s gonna change! Cheers from France
Brett, your How To videos are awesome. You should do more of these. Don't have to be fancy airs tutorial and such, just Fundamental techniques would be great. Thanks again.
I made 1 out of 8 barrels yesterday on small frontside barrels, and I totally forgot about doing this, I remembered when I was brushing my teeth this morning thinking man I need to watch this video again❤❤
gday brett, i thought i new how to ride barrells ,but turns out youre never too old to learn... at age 46 now im making way more thanks to your vids. cheers mate , now im frothing like a grommet... yyeeeeeww!!
Thank you for always uploading videos. I'm watching your videos from Miyazaki, Japan, and studying tube riding. You taught me to position my front shoulder inside, closer to my knees when riding a frontside barrel wave. Thank you! Miyazaki sometimes gets barrel waves during typhoons, so I'll study and practice again during those times, visualize, and watch your videos repeatedly to learn. I look forward to more video uploads in the future (・∀・)b ありがとう!
Used to find it really easy to pigdog when I was a whippersnapper up until about the age of 40 now after a few injuries etc and being 49 it ain't so easy anymore frontsides fine just can't get so low now onda backhand interesting watch 🏄👌🤙a wide stance helps a lot on your backhand I think it did me anyway people with narrower stance,s quite often look awkward when pigdogging 🤙
Thanks for taking the time to pass on and share your knowledge!! Couple of real lightbulb 💡 moments re foot 🦶 position b/s and f/s shoulder inside the knee 🙏🏻🤙🏼
Brett “The Man” Barley! I love these Breakdown/How To videos. I never thought about my foot positioning when barrel riding, except maybe stand further forward to go faster. I am excited to bring all of these cues and awareness of foot positioning into the line up. Thanks again Brett! Cheeee🤙
Brett, thanks for taking the time to put these together, lots of great info that I will definitely incorporate to improve my results. Your winter wetsuit, what thickness required? I am usually at Folly but have not hit it in coldest winter yet, need to check out the NC shore, looks crazy good up there.
I mean, when you're just that good!!! I"m thinking maybe I'd get in their with a boogy board!!! But, you have just provided a ray of hope Brah!!! GAME ON!!!
I am the undisputed king of tiny barrels at my homebreak. The homies try to talk shit but I just laugh at their barrel dodging ways. Everything said in this video is spot on and I love the attitude! Any barrel is better than no barrel!!!
Thank you!! At 6'6" I was constantly getting caught by the lip frontside. Shoulder inside my knee has totally changed the types of barrels I can get out of!
Great share. Especially since I'm a FL surfer and these are the type of waves we get - little ones. One we can relate to. I wish my knees could handle those contortions, but no way.
Your tutorials are by far the best out there, please keep em coming! Thanks so much man, love your stoke! Just had a 2-3 foot barrel session and wish I'd seen this video last night 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Another great vid with some helpful insight. For what it is worth, I understand you have to calculate the ROI for paying a filmer and your time I editing such for each time you go out to film, but I would enjoy seeing more summer footage of yours when it is smaller like this.
I’m definitely going to... it’s just hard as my filmer from REAL Watersports needs to do whatever’s most productive and filming small surf doesn’t take precedence over shooting stuff at the shop on a given day. But we got after it today in some small fun tubes! Coming next week :)
really appreciate the info Brett...long time shoulder surfer and your positional video (take off behind peak) really opened my eyes. This tutorial is just as awesome. Keep em coming e.g. paddling, poping up, turns, etc. Thanks again.
Hey these videos are super useful thank you! Can you do more? Would be great to get your tips on manoeuvres and appropriate ones for various wave types/sections 😁
Thankyou so much!!! this is exactly what I needed, toe side i always had my shoulder out and would get clipped 24/7. thanks again and keep up the great work!
Your videos are gold. Not many people have the skill to perform, the amassed footage, and the analytical inclination to produce a video like this. Is this body position something you worked out and put into practice or was there some other process of discovery that led to you finding it?
It’s just what I do... the frontside arm inside my knee thing became habit, and I realized how much better it was. Everything else was just natural progression
Just found the channel from gravy's vlog. Trying to figure out the grab rail on the new soft top fish, any tips for not nose diving when going to get low and grab the rail in the drop of the backside
It's just mind blowing man! Where i surf i don't have much of barrel opportunity, but when it shows up i always throw myself at those little tubes haha Actually i never made one and i think it is because of my posture and line that i picked up, but knowing this maybe i'll do better when it happens again. Thanks for the video and keep the awesome job!
Yea! I have a toe.problem.from litdoging ... The frontsid tip was.money.. my pointbreak is left so my frontaide varrel.sucks, tommorow trying it out... and ita tiny at the beachbreak
great video! ...just might want to let people know it's also very dangerous for your MCL (inner-knee ligament). tore mine last year doing this in Bali. very painful and took a long time to heal.
@ well, lots of stuff potentially. But especially putting your knee in positions like this. And even more so if someone has had a previous MCL injury. Just sayin…
@@brettbarley btw, I tried your frontside barrel technique for the first time yesterday (which is why I came back to this video again), and it worked great! I needed to lean a bit more forward, but other than that it was perfect! ...also, regarding MCL, you might just suggest doing exercises & stretches that prepare you for being able to pig dog safely, as many people don't have that kind of natural flexibility. the back knee in pigdog is in a very vulnerable position.
I mean… these positions don’t compromise your knees, Unless you have bad knees from previous injuries… but that’s just a different conversation. As far as the positioning, it’s all simple movements, and none of it is painful or tweaking. If it is, you’re not distributing your weight right. but You’re not going to hurt yourself unless you fall and cause hyper extension by doing the splits or something. Simply crouching down into positions is fine… Potentially Getting hurt is part of life. You Can roll your ankle walking down the stairs.
Stoked the frontside technique worked for you! As far as the back knee in PigDog position… it’s really just a kneeling position, it’s not dangerous to be in that position. It is a very very similar position to kneeling for a sports photo (like we did as kids) but you’re grabbing your rail and hunched forward.
Good stuff 👍 Thank you for the detailed breakdown!! Flexibility helps too haha. You know how Mason Ho does that weird cross board grab? Is that to get into the more compressed position? Although he does it on larger square barrels too.
WHO'S READY FOR SOME SUMMER PITS NOW?!
That fs barrel stance is probably one of the most helpful surfing tips I've found online
For real, I cannot understate how helpful your videos they are. The only thing I think that could help more is a POV video with a mouth GoPro. I mean when I watch these it’s like I have a personal surf coach. Also, what Apple Watch band is that!? Haha
you just got me super psyched for the next few weeks of tiny waves here on the west coast :')
wahooooo
thanks Brett
Stoked! Check out Dawn Patrol App on the Apple Watch
El slammo style!! Haha yeah Brett
yeah lol
" just to be clear I don't film when it's knee to thigh high..ever" is not a phrase used by your mate Ben Gravy lol
You Brett, just gave a Masterclass! Well done.
👍🏼👍🏼
Moral of the story: just boogie board 😂

This was so good! I’m 6’5” and always have trouble getting into barrels. These tips will get me many more visions❤much love and respect from Japan🙏🙏
Thanks Brett, so stoked to try this 😎🙌

Was trying to do this but feel like these tips will help. the small ones look so fun to crouch and ride in them.
Your videos are so great. You touch on the little important details that other videos miss. Thanks man
This is completely insane, Brett takes small barrels to another level
I called the knee boarding, been waiting for this tutorial for so long
Wow, awesome lessons right there! I will train all of these and try to put ut into practice on the next sessions! Thank you

Hey Brett, I watched this yesterday, and today got the best backhand barrel of my life, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Yesss!!!
Great vid bro. Had backside on lock down from 7 years at snapper but. Frontside tips are a game changer. Thanks

Thanks Brett, amazing video. I can't wait to try the fh technique!
Very relevant, very subtle, very very helpful. Thank you!
You’re the pygmy barrel champion! Thanks 🤙🏼
Super helpful tutorial here Brett! Thank you
Great share. Especially since I'm a FL surfer and these are the type of waves we get - little ones. One we can relate to. I wish my knees could handle those contortions, but no way.
love the epic tiny tube montage ... east coast for life
Thx so much !!! I’m intermediate surfer, always getting clipped by the lip, especially being tall. This vid is perfect.
Legend! thank you so much for all the info across the 3 barrel how-to videos
Brett, thanks for what you do! You hands down make the best surf tip videos. Please continue doing what you’re doing!

THANK YOU for making this!!
Cheers Brett. You are the barrell KING. Some serious stretching coming up :)
great stuff Brett, can you advise on the apple watch strap you are using here and in general for surfing ?
Your videos are gold. Not many people have the skill to perform, the amassed footage, and the analytical inclination to produce a video like this. Is this body position something you worked out and put into practice or was there some other process of discovery that led to you finding it?

Huge fan of these tutorials, best quality on RUclips 🤙
Thanks! I appreciate it
nº1 barrel tutorials! really good content, we apreciate it, thanks! :D ready for summer
Just found the channel from gravy's vlog. Trying to figure out the grab rail on the new soft top fish, any tips for not nose diving when going to get low and grab the rail in the drop of the backside
I’ve got a late takeoff tutorial that helps with that. 👍🏼 Thanks for following!
Rabbit trailing pop ups, barrel riding. What's the black square on your surfboard under your front foot (outdoor/lawn example). Grip tape??
Love you videos, keep up the good content 💪
You should do a air tutorial (reverses, straight, full rotation...)
That last backside barrel was absolute Houdini 😂
Really love your tutorials Brett! So much fantastic detail......more than anyone else out there is doing.
You should do more of them!! 😄😄
Great video content mate. Love it! Question: how did you get that cool shot at to follow your board at 3:22 ? sooo awesome!
Thanks dude, great tips. Merry Christmas micro barrels!
Thank man, actually really helpful, still get to ride backside tubes comfortable so hopefully these are the steps I need!!
Yew!

Come demo these skillz out in Carmel, CA. Perfect tiny barrel practice waves.
Amazing technique mate! Thanks for this video.👌🏼
Thank you for your time and your way to explain!! Great videos!! 🙏🏽👍🏽
Thank you Brett for sharing these secrets. How great are you? 👍👍 When grabbing the rail, does this cause drag? Do you grab the full edge of the board?
Amazing tutorial 🙏🏽👏
AIRS next!!! Please, please do a similar breakdown on punting technique.
well done! great communication man!
Increíble, viviendo en el mediterráneo me a sido muy útil tus Tips, Gracias Bro 🔝🤙
So awesome! Would be rad if you did the same level detail tutorial on turns
Gracias por compartir tu conocimiento 🤙

woh, these insights ! Thanks for the detail Brett.
Unfortunately, surfing in Israel, most of my practice is surfing the smallest tubes of my life
Thanks brett boyiiiii. Tomorrow is gonna be frickin insane. Cheuiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!
So awesome! Thank You 😀
Sup brett, love your videos
I would really appreciate it if you would make a video covering back footed surfing and front footed surfing
Thanks for the tutorial was extraordinary!!!
awesome tips thanks
best board size for these little barrels?
Good stuff 👍 Thank you for the detailed breakdown!! Flexibility helps too haha. You know how Mason Ho does that weird cross board grab? Is that to get into the more compressed position? Although he does it on larger square barrels too.
I know nothing about surfing and only understand 10% of what you're saying, but this seems cool AF and it's thrilling just to watch.
You should make a video on how to catch tiny waves with that tiny board. What height is that thing?
Nice video ! Now a tutorial on how to do airs ?? 😁😁
Great video Brett,,, a lot of thanks:) :)
This was fantastic. Thank you.
Great tutorial! This is so useful!
Wow! Really well explained. Thank you!
One of the best surfing tutorials I've seen. Shame it was mini barrelling last week before I knew all this stuff. Dammit!
Also can you please film next time it's tiny barrels.
Lo máximo maestro ! Gracias!
