This is one of my fave movies and one of my fave loves, Leslie Cheung. This song is so ideal for Farewell My Concubine that I cried buckets the first time I saw this fan made MV, although it is not the movie trailer. I watched this movie for the first time in our local Chinese embassy and everyone was sobbing by the end of it. Even decades later I still cry when I watch it. I highly recommend you watch it and you fall in love with Gor Gor like I did. But make sure you're not planning to go out after as your eyes will be all red and swelling from crying ...

After the Qin Dynasty failed, there were 2 warlords who fight against each other. One called "XIANG Yu" was failed and killed himself, and in this opera is his last scene, that he farewelled his beloved concubine named "YU Ji", who killed herself before his suicide, to make him no worry about her.

It takes time in WWII-era China, and there is a lot of historical context that makes this story tragic. But one huge theme of the movie is that one of the two main characters is gay, which is basically condemned at that era. ****SPOILER**** but yeah he commits suicide at the end. The fact that makes this 3000x sadder is that basically the same thing happened to the actor of that character, Leslie Cheung. He was a super famous singer before he turned actor and starred in a bunch of homosexual-themed movies (his movies are all classics, btw). So he was basically an activist. This was 1990s Hong Kong so, highly conservative, and ppl treated homosexuality like its AIDS or something. First, I am amazed that Hua Chenyu wrote a song for Karen Mok before he met her and it was so perfect for her voice. 2nd, I am also touched by his obvious admiration to Leslie and emotional tribute to her life.
