Hey, just found your channel! Great review! I’m Italian and this film got me into listening to Peking Opera so I’ll always be grateful to all the people involved in its making. Leslie Cheung truly gave the performance of a lifetime. Probably the most gorgeous human being who ever graced the screen.

I saw this movie back in 1993. I sat for 3 hours spell bound watching it and enjoying every minute of this great movie. Best foreign movie ever.

The Oscars highlight American made films (which is the purpose). I just ran into a trailer
for a 4K restoration of Farewell. From what I can see it gives the film more visual snap
while retaining the atmosphere of the original prints.
For a 10 year period the Communist Party relaxed film censorship (1987-1997) and Chinese
film makers took advantage of it releasing several great stories. Farewell and films like
Raise The Red Lantern could not be made in China today.
Watching Farewell is a good use of 3 hours.

04:53 I felt that! I just watched the movie and rated it 5/5 as well. This was such an immersive, poetic and soul-crushing juggernaut of a movie. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

my opinion is the most terrifying history is the period before republicanized, when child abuse was common in all aspects of society, these traditional theater, their harsh training routine was one of them. Cultural revolution almost feels like a similar “harsh training routine” but for grow-ups. So, it would be illogical to say grow-ups are more fragile than children in mental torturing, therefore less terrifying
