This game is the reason I own a Ps4. I was on the fence when Garegga came out but this game sealed the deal. This is easily my favorite shooting games. The Characters, the setting, the music, gameplay, you name it this game has it. It all blends so well together, it feels like your going on a god damn adventure! Hopefully I can get that 2-All some time, loop 2 is very unforgiving. You mentioned the input lag, its not a big deal in this game. Its definitely better than mame but I don't think most people will notice it. I think I lucked out with the Ps4, most of the main STGs I play have been ported to it at this point: Garegga, Mahou, Game Tengoku, Kiki KaiKai, Sonic WIngs 3 and soon Darius II and Gaiden. There just a few more I would love to be ported at this point: OutZOne, Plus Alpha, Parodius, Batrider, Batsugun and like Raiden DX lol Glad you enjoyed Mahou, its just too good!
I bought a dead Sorcer Striker board about a year ago. Finally sent it to Michael Moffitt last week, even tho I had not too much hope for that one... It's working now! Let me quote him for maximum repair madness... "This one was a bit of a pain, but I've fixed it already. In short, dead GAL16V8 custom, bad text RAM, bad main VRAM, bad DAC driving DFFs (74HCT273), and reflow of GP9001. It looks like it was worked on somewhat violently with a heat gun in the past..." Can't wait to get it back into my hands, together with a fixed Dogyuun and Vasara 🤗
I definitely recommend you check out the sequels too. Kingdom Grandprix is really neat to explore because of the racing gimmick, and Dimahoo is imo probably the best of the three. Builds on most of the things you like about Sorcer Striker and kind of has that anything-goes mashup quality that Batrider has. Doesn't get talked about as much as Garegga and Batrider but imo it's on par with them, hopefully it gets an M2 port eventually so more people check it out
I had kingdom Grand Prix for the Saturn and as much as a great game it was, I was always conflicted about racing or just straight up shmupping. I wish they converted this as personally I love the art style and simplicity of the gameplay.
Great review! Mahou needs all the love it can get, it still lives in the shadows of the great Compile shooters before it and the monumental Raizing games that followed. I really like the game and it is one of the shmups I am considering once, in the distante future, I am finished with my current STG effort 😄
Dude, I had a ton of fun with this one. I never really got on the grind for an Arcade 1cc, partly because of criticism from other players and partly because I wasn't super crazy about some of the mechanics (at least at my skill level, the cost of death is huge, weapon power falls off so fast). I did have a blast playing through Dual mode, which I think is one of the more creative arranges in the ShotTriggers series, though I haven't played Ketsui or Garegga yet. I wish there was an arrange like that in Esp Ra.De. I think Crimzon Clover is one of the few arcade style shmups that has a mode that significantly changes gameplay, though in the case of the ShotTriggers arranges they are much much easier than the arcade original. I guess what I'm getting at is that I want to see more arrange modes created not just to be easier/more novice acceptable, but new equally valid ways to experience the game (though I think the real sweet spot is a difficulty level somewhere in between arcade and super easy levels)
ruclips.net/video/v8uvgZQMqtY/видео.html Here's my mere mortal clear of Dual. I'm far from a superplayer so I like the idea of chronicling what a relative novice can clear and the progression as I improve.
I would've loved for M2 to release this in the US! Lately their Shot Triggers releases have been exclusive to Japan only, which is kind of a bummer. But it would be nice to see games like Sorcer Striker, ESP Ra De Psi and the Aleste Collection get an English language release. These games are just so good.
Nice review! Hey Mark, in the future can you do a tutorial video with screenshots/video about how to buy these Japanese console releases. There is a lot of Cave stuff on 360 and now the new M2 PS4 ports, but the stupidity of region locking and the hurdles you have to jump over have always put me off getting them.
I discovered Raizing through a Dimahoo cabinet and it remains my favorite looking shooter. I'm looking forward to picking this up sometime though as it looks much more manageable.
Yes! Been looking forward to this review. This game / port really deserves it! I can't even remember how I found out about this port, but it's not really common knowledge in the West which is a real shame. M2 needs to get it in all the eshops. They probably have like zero budget for localization I guess. The graphics are so good, and hella charming right? It's really one of the best looking games from that era. I love the whimsical vibe like you were saying. The orchestral reworking of the already amazing OST just puts this port way over the top. Definitely a must have, and another must have shmup exclusive to PS4. PS4 is like the X360 of this era. Well done bro! :D
I have just picked this up. The game is superb, the creativity on show is off the charts and that orchestral arrangement is sublime. A truly outstanding game.
I would love to have a retail copy of the game. Just like Dangun Feveron.... but I´m at a point where I can say, ok get the digital one to support Shot Trigger right now and if there is a retail one later, I´ll buy that too. Played Mahou only once last year at HEY Arcade. The art style blew me away and it has a kinda like Raiden flair to me. Definitly gonna get this one. Great in depth review! Oh and btw: I know people hate it when others try to promote themselves on other channels but I finally finished my review of ESP Ra De Psi. Think it´s gonna be up on Saturday or Sunday on my channel and I would realy like to know what you think about it cause my passion for those kinda games is also realy high. A review to Ketsui Deathtiny is already up Well until then, have a good one!
I’m a little surprised that you hadn’t heard of Mahou Daisakusen. Really good game, and one that I remember toying around with in MAME years ago. I wonder if M2’s faithfulness to the original input lag in the arcade machines is to replicate that experience as closely as possible, since Japanese arcades are still very much a thing, and STGs are still played and enjoyed in that setting. That would be my guess.
Sad they never released this one physically. It's an excellent game that people overlook because it's so overshadowed by Raizing's more famous titles. I really like the theme and the visuals. You can see some of the game's Compile roots in the art design.
I'd still pay top dollar for a Western release. Looks like I have to go down the import exotic video game "rabbit hole". Also, thank you for sharing you knowledge and experience, much appreciated.
the characters on Mahou Daisakusen is my favorite aspect on that game even my favorite in STG games. Gain and Chita is my favorite! btw looking at the gallery mode(18:33) im realize the Character design has been planned to have western/semi realistic style. but ended up with manga style instead. good choice! but im not mean western style are ugly, im also like that instead. i love the chita western version. she looks more mature there. and also Gain in western style looks more like superhero style of man design or maybe looks like Fist of north star(Hakuto no ken) art style a little. but i think manga style is fit enough on the shmup scene of game. i mean mostly STG games in 90s have manga style. like Batsugan, Gunbird, Blazing Star, etc
This is the game mark. This is the one I choose to try and get good at. It’s just fun and any time I die I feel like it’s my fault. To this day I have never heard a review this gushing from you. Maybe Gunvein.
I'm checking this review out while I'm fresh off of my first ever arcade 1CC in Batrider. I've played bit of this on MAME and I love the aesthetic of this game a lot and it's nice to see that it got the M2STG treatment. Too bad it didn't get ported for the Nintendo Switch, and I'm wondering if it's worth getting a PS5 for this hoping for backwards compatibility (plus there's also Ketsui and Garegga)
This is a great game with superb graphics and gameplay. I can see influences on Demonizer in this one M2 are just fantastic and the rankograph is the icing on the cake for me. Hope M2 do more Raizing games at some point in the future. This and Garegga are brilliant.
I’ve been collecting the M2 ShotTriggers releases physically, and as of this moment this is the only release I don’t have… But I aim to change that here in a few minutes lol

Kingdom Grand Prix, Soukyugurentai, Bakraid are all very very awesome shooters. Just as good as Garegga and Batrider in my opinion. Maybe Garegga is a little tiny bit above all the rest of them but Raizing in my opinion is 2nd only to Cave.
