My favorite interaction with Tayam is Deadly Grub. Enters with 3 time counters (Vanishing 3) and when it dies you get a 6/1 Insect token with Shroud. Pretty hilarious.
Before I even build a deck I refer to the commander’s quarters. You always have such amazing ideas and synergies that I would have never considered. You the man Mitch!
It's important to note that tayam only removes counters on creatures, so cards like plague boiler won't help in that aspect. When I built my deck I added several sagas without that in mind. Still an absolute powerhouse though...
Otherwise a card like Delaying Shield would definitely be utilized in that deck. Prevents all damage dealt to you, puts that many counters on it, when you reach your upkeep you pay 1 life or 1W for each counter. Or... you know... remove the counters with Tayam for card advantage and don't be around for the negative parts of the Shield. Netherborn Altar would never become that expensive to cheat the Commander Tax. Dark Depths seems fairly good. It would kinda be interesting to see what you could create if Tayam could snatch counters from among all permanents you control.
Very good pointing that out, it's an important distinction because while there are ways in green to animate lands into creatures being able to continually remove Age Counters from Glacial Chasm would be very powerful. (in relevance to the Plague Boiler topic Glacial Chasm is not a creature)
I built this with several game-ending combos, and it's currently my favorite deck. I love the toolbox graveyard and the instant speed of Tayam's ability. There's a lot going on with triggers and counters, so it can be a little overwhelming sometimes, but never boring

I have Tayam built already, and one recommendation I would make to anyone who wants to build him is to swap out Reclamation Sage for Knight of Autumn. Still gives you the option to nuke an artifact or enchantment but if you don't need to, you can also gain 4 life or put 2 +1/+1 counters on it on etb.
I built him as a cheap commander for a ''fair'' budget build, not stax-centered but abusing counters and graveyard interactions and he is more enjoyable to play than my Kathril deck that has an overall higher powerlevel and more focused build.
I built an Elf Ball deck with him. I included some grave recursion spells like Ereie Ultimatum and Lurrus of the Dream-Den. It's so much fun to pilot. (my playgroup is scared of it though). I thought a good addition to Tayam would be Codex Shredder. It's a uncommon colorless artifact for 1 and you can tap it to mill any player (most likely you). Then it has a second ability where you can pay 5, Tap it, Sacrifice it the return target card from your graveyard to your hand. It's so useful. I support the deck tech you did and i'm gonna try it. I really enjoy watching your Chanel and I want to see more Commander's Quarters Gameplay, THAT WAS SO COOL TO WATCH!!!! sorry about the length and can't wait to see more Crazy Deck Tecks.
Built a very similar deck when Tayam was released, you can really generate insane value quickly and finish the game in no time. Aristocrat variants proved to be most resiliant and overall strongest in my experience
I think a sleeve that looked like the picture when you where about to reveal the golden pigs would be awesome. black with a golden pig on the bottom and a golden boarder
I used to have a Tayam EDH deck built with Knight tribal in mind. Due to most Knight creatures having Vigilance, Tayam giving them a vigilance counter basically means free counters to remove without nerfing those creatures in the process. Now, it's not the best build ever, but being able to recur History of Benalia can be nice to have.
One of my favorite sacrifice outlets from my Tayam deck was martyrs cause because it made you extremely difficult to kill through combat damage or burn spells.
I built a Tayam deck as soon as I saw your spoiler for it. I did it on a 50 budget, and it is one of my favorite decks. Wall of roots is also VERY good in here, maybe better than devoted druid. It can store up to 4 counters while still producing mana.

But I did not add it to not apply any pressure. And then: BAM T.W.O. Golden Pigs with Urzas priest of gix which I'm sure I have in my box from back in the day.
A stupidly cheap but also powerful/fast version of Tayam you can build is with ways to find Devoted Druid (such as Elvish Harbinger, Fauna Shaman) and then just cast a Giant Growth-spell on it (anything that gives at least +2 Toughness). An X/4 or bigger Devoted Druid can create three -1/-1 counters and GGG to activate Tayam an infinite number of times (the "Mill 3" is part of the effect itself, not the cost, so you can still activate on an empty library). So you mill your whole deck 3 cards at a time, getting back whatever, until you flip over Moonglove Extract (3, Artifact, Sac this: Deal 2 damage to any target). Then you just loop Extract on each opponent's face until dead.
Cauldron of Souls and Path of Discovery. Cauldron taps to give any number of creatures(yours or opponents) persist - you can use those -1/-1 counters to fuel Tayam, trigger ETB, trigger death effects, and/or get off a second sacrifice. It's also a handy political tool. Path of Discovery triggers explore whenever a creatures enters the battlefield under your control. If you hit a non-land, you can keep it there or mill it and place a +1/+1 counter on the creature. If you hit a land, you put it in your hand. I'm not 100% on the ruling, but the two of them together may be able to revive your many 1 health creatures as long as you manage to hit a non-land card on the explore. The +1/+1 counter might negate the -1/-1 counter from persist before it dies, although I'm not positive on that.
I made a deck with this as the commander, it was thallid/fungus themed. Pir is amazing in it. Multiple vigilance counters, creatures are super vigilant.
There are also ways to make Devoted Druid go infinite with Tayam to help you win the game. Centaur Garden, Shield Mage, and Hashep Oasis are all under 50 cents, and two of them are searchable with Crop Rotation. Using any of those activated abilities, you can buff the Druid and stack up counters on it until you are ready to take them off with Tayam. You can mill AND reanimate your whole deck (including lands!) or float infinite green for any big outlet. Best of all, it's all instant speed, so it makes it a bit harder for your opponents to interact with your board. I like reanimating all my creatures to swing with the next turn, or pouring all that green into a Torment of Hailfire.
Other good options for the deck that are pretty budget: Managorger Hydra, Woe Strider and Pawn of Ulamog. Pawn is the most expensive of the three, coming in at around $7 the last I checked, but definitely worth it for what it does in this deck, making scions you can sack for free mana anytime one of your nontoken creatures dies. Managorger Hydra gets a +1/+1 counter whenever any player casts a spell and has Trample, making him a good counter engine, attacker and blocker all at the same time. Woe Strider is great because it has the same ability as Viscera Seer, allowing you to sack a creature for free at instant speed to Scry 1, but he also makes a 0/1 goat token when he etbs, giving you immediate fodder that also comes in with a Vigilance counter with Tayam out.
I have my own deck for tayam and the hardest thing is building up counters fast, because low cmc permanants that make more than 3 counters are rare, but there are some hidden gems like details and knights of autumn which come in with 3 counters because tayam gives them a vigilance counter, also I'm definietly adding this sack outlets
Decided to swap Nethroi out for him cus he seems more consistent. However for future deck builders, make sure you have a way to protect Tayam at all cost. Most times he will be the one generating the counters. Equipment that gives him shroud/hexproof are ideal as well. Orr... only play him when you can at least activate his ability once to fetch a sporefrog or dauntless escort.
Gaya’s Ghostform will work great for this deck. I looked up the rule to be safe. Since Tayam ability can move at instant speed, it can be used to bring Gaya back from the graveyard and attached it right to Tayam on any players turn.
Another fantastic addition to the deck for this is Shalai, Voice of Plenty. Sadly, she isn't recurrable with Tayam, as she has a mana value of 4, but she gives all of your creatures, Planeswalkers and you the player Hexproof and has an activated ability that puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
@@rencharon3458 I would recommend adding Alpha Authority and/or Aspect of Mongoose. They are both 2 MV. One gives hexproof and the other gives shroud. They are both auras. Just my two cents.

You’re correct in that Tayam can’t use the counters on it. However, it synergizes well with any proliferate cards in the deck plus Tayam can recur it. Winding Constrictor + proliferate + 1 turn for example gives you a board wipe for just 3 mana. Pretty good rate.
Taigam has a good counter and recursion synergy. so it'll already have things like proliferate and other counter manipulation cards. Although taigam can always just bring back the nuke if you start falling behind.
I loved the design of this commander as soon as it was spoiled and finally built the deck a little while ago. It's super fun to play but it is not fun to play against, it takes very long turns just managing all the counters, milling, and deciding what to put into play.
hey mitch! just so you know good-fortune unicorn and any persist creature go infinite with itself with any sac outlet. you get the same effect you would with tayam and those 3 mana death creatures but through a different card. thought you should know i love my tayam deck!
Also creature that come into play with a number of counters on them like swarm shambler or modulat creatures also work very well in a Tayan deck as well
I love tayam as a commander IRL and honestly one of the biggest misses I saw in this video was no wall of roots, which has the ability to put -0/-1 counters on him during each turn so u can set up plays on other players turns. Also devoted Druid + any way to give it 2 more toughness that is not +1/+1 counters lets you go infinite. I’m also a big fan of squirrels nest in the deck and abzan ascendancy as pure value and ways to get more counters. I will also say that luminous brood moth is my personal Holden pig but I understand that it’s higher on the budget side.
I play tayam as a persist commander becayse she's so fun when you have three creatures with persist and an ashnod's altar or phyrexian altar on the board. She can even get back ashnod's altar if it gets destroyed!
It’s definitely incredible. I think people tend to pass on cards with MV 4 or more in this deck though because if it’s milled it’s hard to get back sometimes.
please consider Syr Conrad the Grim, Ouphe Vandals, Elixer of Immortality, and Loaming Shaman. There's no worse "feels bad" moment when someone actually has a method to exile your graveyard and then that could possibly just "put you out of the game" especially since Tayam, Luminous Enigma ability can be activated at any time in response to anything so he can interact with "the stack". Yes Syr Conrad the Grim is 5 CMC, he's the only creature where having him in play can make the opponent "think twice" about exiling your graveyard without answering him. Also, there are a bunch of creatures you could make use of that are 3 CMC or less that would allow you to retrieve him from the graveyard like Cadavar imp.
Surprised not to see Abzan Ascendancy in here, it's pretty cheap and both the counters on ETB and counters on creatures dying seem like great synergy with Tayam
Personally, I would go for one of those three strategies: -1/-1 counters creatures from amonkhet, zombie army, Splinterfright type creatures (for 10 long years I'm trying to put him in a deck that will make him do wonders)
I'm surprised there's no Grakmaw, Lazotep Reaver or Oathsworn Knight. Grakmaw, Lazotep Reaver, and Oathsworn Knights are all fantastic for counters; They generate 4, 3, and 5 counters respectively (with Tayam on battlefield). Fertilid also works great at every point in the game. Then you have Sporefrog you can recur and keep yourself safe against stompy decks. I've been playing with Tayam ever since the precon came out. He is an absolute delight to play.
Dude Tayam is broken. His ability isn't a tap ability and it has no "per turn" limit requirement so he goes infinite with everything under the sun. Also, because his ability says permanent you can build pretty much anything. Landfall: Crucible, Ramunap and fetch lands are 3cmc or less, not to mention Azusa and Dryad also fit the bill. Recursion: Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead and Doomed Necromancer can help you recur creatures outside of Tayam's requirements. Counters: Any persist creature, Anafenza/Vizier of Remedies/Good-Fortune Unicorn/, and a free sac outlet go infinite. Throw in several aristocrats in your deck and there's your win con. Stax: Ouphe, Archon of Emeria, Thalia, and now Dauthi Voidwalker just scratch the surface of what you can recur with him(Teeg and Trinisphere are great cause thanks to Tayam you don't even have to cast spells). Highly underrated commander. Would recommend him for anyone looking for a new fun commander deck they can take apart and keep rebuilding any way they want.
I have a very simlar deck but mine is more etb/counters matter since with the usefullness of having recursion and does damagr through counters and being more aristocrats
If you increase devoted Druid’s toughness to 4 (with anything that isn’t +1 counters) he goes infinite with Tayam and lets you flip your entire deck on the table I believe
I currently have two counters decks in the lab, one Selesnya and one Silverquill. Maybe I'll just take the greatest hits of each and combine them for a Tayam deck.
Now that "Phyrexian" is a creature type, why don't you try to make a 5-color Phyrexian-tribe deck? With Morophon as the Commander, or whatever you feel like. I absolutely adore the phyrexians, and I always wanted a deck that revolves around them. I know I'm not a patreon (unfortunately I can't afford it), so my wishes doesn't weight that much. But, if you ever want to try that, why not? Anyways, I love this channel, I've seen every video for the last 2 years now (I miss Wayfarer's Bauble being in the deck techs). The way Mitch built it you need Cathodian or Priest of Gix, a sac outlet, a Zulaport Cutthroat effect, and enough counter generation, which would probably need something like Cathar's Crusade to get enough to make the loop infinite. You can also just pump you Devoted Druid to have at least 4 toughness and then you immediately go (nearly) infinite, she alone generates 3 mana and 3 counters to just keep activating Tayam over and over and put your entire deck into play.
This deck tech has convinced me that Tayam does not deserve to play second fiddle to Kathril. I will now set it free to command its own army, eventually.
Mikaeus,the unhallowed also be a great card giving all non human undying and also protecting you from humans i know it pricey and if that why you didn't add it I understand but I feel like that could of been one of the best cards in this deck
As someone who has been playing a Tayam deck since it was released I wouldn't recommend Grim Haruspex as it adds a card to your hand which is really not where you want your cards to be in this deck as Tayams greatest strength lies in its ability working at instant speed so you always have your grave as a hand assuming he's on the board
I was thinking the same thing I recently took grim out after thinking it would be better in the deck but it just added a trigger that threw off my milling

hey mitch! just so you know good-fortune unicorn and any persist creature go infinite with itself with any sac outlet. you get the same effect you would with tayam and those 3 mana death creatures but through a different card. thought you should know i love my tayam deck!

Also creature that come into play with a number of counters on them like swarm shambler or modulat creatures also work very well in a Tayan deck as well

The competitive pile for Tayam is actually super budget. Devoted druid and wax wane/Any pump spell just goes Infinite
Ashnods alter makes this a lot easier/better
And a lot more expensive
I love tayam as a commander IRL and honestly one of the biggest misses I saw in this video was no wall of roots, which has the ability to put -0/-1 counters on him during each turn so u can set up plays on other players turns. Also devoted Druid + any way to give it 2 more toughness that is not +1/+1 counters lets you go infinite. I’m also a big fan of squirrels nest in the deck and abzan ascendancy as pure value and ways to get more counters. I will also say that luminous brood moth is my personal Holden pig but I understand that it’s higher on the budget side.

I play tayam as a persist commander becayse she's so fun when you have three creatures with persist and an ashnod's altar or phyrexian altar on the board. She can even get back ashnod's altar if it gets destroyed!
I have Tayam as a lieutenant to Nethroi with Kaheera as companion. Because it's a Pet Semetery deck with an Abzan Cat Tribal theme!
An amazing budgeting creature for this deck would be "Juniper Order Ranger" it comes in around $0.30 and is a good +1/+1 counter engine
It’s definitely incredible. I think people tend to pass on cards with MV 4 or more in this deck though because if it’s milled it’s hard to get back sometimes.
I have a friend that has built an elf tribal deck with tayam and... Oh boy, is it explosif !
please consider Syr Conrad the Grim, Ouphe Vandals, Elixer of Immortality, and Loaming Shaman. There's no worse "feels bad" moment when someone actually has a method to exile your graveyard and then that could possibly just "put you out of the game" especially since Tayam, Luminous Enigma ability can be activated at any time in response to anything so he can interact with "the stack".
Yes Syr Conrad the Grim is 5 CMC, he's the only creature where having him in play can make the opponent "think twice" about exiling your graveyard without answering him. Also, there are a bunch of creatures you could make use of that are 3 CMC or less that would allow you to retrieve him from the graveyard like Cadavar imp.
Surprised not to see Abzan Ascendancy in here, it's pretty cheap and both the counters on ETB and counters on creatures dying seem like great synergy with Tayam
Personally, I would go for one of those three strategies: -1/-1 counters creatures from amonkhet, zombie army, Splinterfright type creatures (for 10 long years I'm trying to put him in a deck that will make him do wonders)
I'm surprised there's no Grakmaw, Lazotep Reaver or Oathsworn Knight. Grakmaw, Lazotep Reaver, and Oathsworn Knights are all fantastic for counters; They generate 4, 3, and 5 counters respectively (with Tayam on battlefield). Fertilid also works great at every point in the game. Then you have Sporefrog you can recur and keep yourself safe against stompy decks. I've been playing with Tayam ever since the precon came out. He is an absolute delight to play.
Dude Tayam is broken.
His ability isn't a tap ability and it has no "per turn" limit requirement so he goes infinite with everything under the sun. Also, because his ability says permanent you can build pretty much anything. Landfall: Crucible, Ramunap and fetch lands are 3cmc or less, not to mention Azusa and Dryad also fit the bill. Recursion: Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead and Doomed Necromancer can help you recur creatures outside of Tayam's requirements. Counters: Any persist creature, Anafenza/Vizier of Remedies/Good-Fortune Unicorn/, and a free sac outlet go infinite. Throw in several aristocrats in your deck and there's your win con. Stax: Ouphe, Archon of Emeria, Thalia, and now Dauthi Voidwalker just scratch the surface of what you can recur with him(Teeg and Trinisphere are great cause thanks to Tayam you don't even have to cast spells).
Highly underrated commander. Would recommend him for anyone looking for a new fun commander deck they can take apart and keep rebuilding any way they want.
I have a very simlar deck but mine is more etb/counters matter since with the usefullness of having recursion and does damagr through counters and being more aristocrats
If you increase devoted Druid’s toughness to 4 (with anything that isn’t +1 counters) he goes infinite with Tayam and lets you flip your entire deck on the table I believe

Maybe I'll just take the greatest hits of each and combine them for a Tayam deck.

I absolutely adore the phyrexians, and I always wanted a deck that revolves around them.
I know I'm not a patreon (unfortunately I can't afford it), so my wishes doesn't weight that much. But, if you ever want to try that, why not?

taiyam can bring back land you milled too right?
I used this commander for a while and eventually pulled it apart. I just found it too hard to keep counters around for tayam to use for recursion.
Can I get a description of how the combo works?
The way Mitch built it you need Cathodian or Priest of Gix, a sac outlet, a Zulaport Cutthroat effect, and enough counter generation, which would probably need something like Cathar's Crusade to get enough to make the loop infinite. You can also just pump you Devoted Druid to have at least 4 toughness and then you immediately go (nearly) infinite, she alone generates 3 mana and 3 counters to just keep activating Tayam over and over and put your entire deck into play.

Mikaeus,the unhallowed also be a great card giving all non human undying and also protecting you from humans i know it pricey and if that why you didn't add it I understand but I feel like that could of been one of the best cards in this deck

As someone who has been playing a Tayam deck since it was released I wouldn't recommend Grim Haruspex as it adds a card to your hand which is really not where you want your cards to be in this deck as Tayams greatest strength lies in its ability working at instant speed so you always have your grave as a hand assuming he's on the board
I was thinking the same thing I recently took grim out after thinking it would be better in the deck but it just added a trigger that threw off my milling
The build is too creature heavy. Tayam can reanimate any permanent MV 3 so I would include lands and enchantments for ramp and control

Kinda surprised at the lack of Death's Presence. Its a cheap card, and could do a lot of work with this build imo.
Idk, to me, this seems like budget muldrotha with less options, though having white in the profile does open up a lot of choices, especially with the last few sets.

I didnt realize how powerful you could make this card.
I love Tayam. The art, the strategy, everything. Really powerful. But the turns are too long and it isn't fun for the rest of the table.
So a person can just keep returning items from their graveyard Tayam after Tayam.
