The S-Type Looks the Part, but Lost what Makes a Jaguar a Jaguar in the Effort to Make it Reliable

  • SOLD I'm very conflicted about the Jaguar S-Type, which was, essentially, the first "baby Jag." For many years, Jaguar had wanted to build a smaller sibling to the full-sized XJ model, and after years of delays (and an early cancellation by Ford), the project came flying back and produced the S-type, which went on sale in the US in 2000.
That it was a hit with consumers is not arguable - it doubled Jaguar's US sales numbers, and re-familiarized people with the brand. To do this, it relied on traditional Jaguar styling to the point of being almost as retro-modern as the Camaro, Beetle, or challenger. The four round lamps up front, the small wire mesh grill, the sweeping body lines in to a tapered rear all hearkened to the first Mk. 2 S-Types of the early sixties, and did so pretty well. Additionally, the interior treatment convincingly covered the Ford underpinnings with more traditional Jaguar garb - piped leather, expanses of rich wood veneer, deep pile carpet, nicely trimmed gauges, and other items that made it feel like a real Jaguar - at first impression.
But that impression doesn't hold, at least for me. After a while, you begin to notice and miss the distinctively Jaguar details like quality switch gear, odd and meaningless controls, overbuilding of trim, and that sort of thing. The Ford bits just under the surface become apparent like a coin in a shallow fountain. Even some mild electrical glitching doesn't remove the image - the "mystique" is gone, and only somebody's interpretation of it remains.
In many ways, that's not a terrible thing - the Ford parts of this car do make it more reliable, a better all-around driver, and less expensive to own and maintain than a traditional Jag. This is where the conflict comes in for me - mystique is nice, but so is a car starting up every morning.
All in all, this a Jag for people who want good, safe, reliable transportation to provide driving duty, but are only mildly more interested in cars than someone buying a Toyota Camry - they want to appear a certain way when arriving, but don't want to deal with a finicky, hard-to-repair automobile. They want a Jaguar with out the negatives - unfortunately, that couldn't be done without killing too much of what makes a Jaguar a Jaguar.

Well first of all no hate. I will just tell you what I think but it's fine for people to have their opinion. I like the way you speak your mind. I have owned many Jaguars I was a car dealer for many years there. I have owned and driven Jaguar xj6 and XJ8 and xk12 as well as a 4.0 jaguar S-Type. I must disagree that this is not a Jaguar. It drives and has the feeling of all the Jaguars that I've owned. There are some differences for instance the aerodynamics of this car are different from the xj6 is an XJ8. At higher speeds it tends to be buffeted around by wind. I'm talking extremely higher speeds like 200 km an hour. But the feeling of the ride and interior and handling are Jaguar. It definitely is not a Ford Mondeo. Yes you can find some Ford parts on there in areas where it wouldn't make any difference to the feeling of the car like the coil over plug the cop. But the overall presentation feel and ride quality of the car is definitely Jaguar.

Oddly enough it's a twin turbo 2.7 liter diesel (never made available in the US) identical in and out to the one you reviewed, except for mine has the black leather. I often drive down to Switzerland , and on the Autobahn it's still a joy to drive at 135mph in peace and quiet. With 94,000 miles on it, I've had no real problems to speak of. My old '92 XJ-6 Vanden Plas had quite a few more back when I lived in Manhattan. Fun review though! :)

First, you are one of the most masterful salesmen I’ve ever encountered. Your deep, sophisticated and impressive knowledge of every car make of every year is simply beyond imagination. Very impressive.
Second, I would purchase a car from you over anyone else in an instant. Third, your commentary and banter is simply unmatched. Can’t get enough of it. No other car reviewer on RUclips has your sense of humor. In this video, your Irish accent was simply incredible and left me thirsty to hear you say more things in Irish. Your commentary about the World War I mask was also very entertaining. Your daily weather and bird reports are in high demand.
I am very glad to have ran into your first video a few months ago. I truly was missing out. I had no idea that a really cool and down to earth person like you existed.
I like how honest you are about everything and you don’t care what other people think, which is a very important quality. To all the people that post negative comments, my suggestion is to disregard them. There will always be haters.
I’m looking forward to watching more of these videos. Keep up the good work!

Not reading past the first sentence. This guy doesn't even have the facts straight. This car isn't Lincoln ls or ford Mondeo. Those 2 cars actually benefited from Jaguar engineers making those frames. This is one of the best handling and most dependable sedans that many never heard of. It has a comfort of bmw 7 series and drives like bmw 5 series if you have sport version with electrical CATS dampers. Have this car for 12 years. It has never been serviced. Rubber O ring was all that was changed which service botched actually. On the other hand My bmw was broken 100s of times.

illstplaya well, actually Jaguar was channeling its design of the old Mark2 from the 60’s . Mercedes was Channelling it’s Merc’s from the late 50’s to early 60’s . Trying to revive some nostalgia from the generations gone by..Kia & Hyundai are simply trying to “mimick” luxury marques when they released cars in the mid-late 90’s , to have their brand imitate some sort of luxury. Just add Leather, chrome, curved car bodies & interior lights that fade off. These were the typical hallmarks they copied of real luxury marquess to emphasis that “we too “ can add a touch of luxury to our cars.

Well now that you've talked anyone out of wanting it good luck selling it.
I had an 03 S Type, it was a great car to 15 year's old and 157 trouble free miles. I got rid of it to buy my 2012 XF Supercharged V8 Portfolio Edition, biggest mistake I ever made. It's also designed by Ford and had the Ford V8 engine. First was the water pump, at $1,200 then an electrical short I the trunk at $350, next a $1,200 fuel pump. The next was a $2,000+ computer failure then another fuel pump. And the final straw was a blown head gasket. The car had never been hot or over heated. The car was a POS. I just traded out of it for a Lincoln MKS Eco-boost AWD sedan. Much better car.
    Tata now owns JLR.
Don't buy a Tata in Jag Drag!
