Surviving Thyroid Cancer: 1 Year Later (Patient Testimonial Update: Erica Ervin)

  • Erica gave us an update on her thyroidectomy one year after her first interview and two years after the operation. She also offers advice for anyone recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. See her video from last year here: • Patient Testimonial - ...
Erica: Obviously I panicked immediately when I first heard the word "cancer." I was definitely very scared. It's always scary when you find out you have cancer or anything serious like that.
My name is Erica Ervin and it's been two years since my thyroidectomy.
My first surgery, it was just a one-inch scar. I mean, I really have no scars. My surgeries went really well. My first incision was an inch long, kind of in the front and center at the base of my neck.
I actually ended up having cancer come back in one of my lymph nodes. Dr. Lee, in my surgery that I had last summer, removed, I believe it was twenty or so lymph nodes on the right side of my neck. And all of them were biopsied and only one contained cancer, so that was good.
So for the rest of my life, every morning I have to take a hormone replacement pill. But it's okay, I just take mine in the morning first thing when I wake up with a full glass of water. And then get ready for the day and then I can have breakfast. And then you also have to have fairly regular blood testing because your levels can change throughout the years. So yeah, pretty much since after the first surgery I've felt pretty normal. Or as normal as I can feel.
If I was talking to someone who was just diagnosed and found out they had to have surgery, I would definitely tell them it's okay to be afraid. But fortunately I know with thyroid cancer, it's very curable. Especially when caught in the beginning. The surgery is very minimally-invasive. The healing is...I found to be pretty quick. I was worried about scaring, and I'm sure most people are. The scaring was very minimal. Many people who meet me don't even know I've had two surgeries.

Had a thyroidectomy in 2006. Been on 88 mcg Synthroid. Scar is hardly noticeable. Excellent ENT surgeon. Excellent Endocrinologist. Do not even need the Specialist anymore. I have annual bloodwork. Had a few ultrasounds on neck since 2006. All good. No apparent symptoms or complaints.

@@aliyahossaini8772Hi there! I'm a 28 year old man who had cancer removal surgery back in June. The main symptom for me personally was a very large lump forming on one half of my neck. It's rather noticeable but if you're your younger most doctors assume it's a lipoma (that's what happened to me). If you notice a mass in your neck, get it seen by a physician or an ear, nose and throat doctor. Never be afraid to get a second opinion.

Do NOT look for an answer from doctors. All they have to sell is operations and poison. Thats it. Nothing else. They are salesmen! Know that! They are there only to make money off of you and lots of it. Poison brings in A LOT Of $. They do not care whether you live or die or if you are happy or miserable. They just want to sell you what they have and it doesn't work. Please look into a more homeopathic way to live with your cancer. I have found a wonderful way to live with my cancer without money hungry doctors getting all my money as they destroy my quality of life.
Please take my advice, stop going to doctors. They will only hurt you further, They will not help you.

I just celebrated my 1year post op for thyroidectomy. I was sad before because I'm supposed to apply as flight attendant but a week prior to my interview my mom request for me to have a neck check up because I lost so much weight but then my neck is looking weird then I found out I had suspicious cancer. Only choice given to me was full thyroidectomy the night before my surgery I was singing while crying because I don't know what will happen to my voice after. So know I'm still kinda sad happy that I can still talk and I'm alive but I cannot sing anymore like the way I sing before. Now I sing like a person who never ever sang before. Like everytime I try to sing like someone is choking me. 😭 I love singing and now I get frustrated everytime I start a line I can't even finish the first verse without getting irritated 😔

Must be nice to feel completely normal after your surgery. I had my thyroid completely removed over 2 years ago and my life has been a living hell ever since. I was put on 175mcg of levothyroxine and within a week after my surgery I was waking up in the middle of the night with heart palpitations, anxiety, rashes, and all sorts of other problems. It has taken over two years but now my medication had to be switched to Synthroid because my tolerance of changes in dosage are extreme. I have to swap a 100mcg one day and take an 88mcg the next. On 100's I feel like Im dying and on 88 its not much better. The difference of an .5 and .8 tsh level is night and day for me. I am no longer waking up in the middle of the night but I feel no where near as good as I did before my surgery, I would have rather lived with the cancer at this point and died early to it than live the life Im living now. My digestive system is a complete wreck and cant eat or drink anything without a severe autoimmune response. Wish they could figure out what is wrong with me but Ive been to about 12 endocrinologists and none of them have been any help. I wish you all the best with this surgery but I advise you to get 2, 3 or even 4 opinions before you do, I wish I had.

I have a scar from my 2 surgeries. I had thyroid cancer 12 years ago. Luckily it didnt spread. I now take 88mcg levothyroxine. I hate the hairloss from it. I get tired easily so i dont work as much at age 52. Ive slowly gained weight and cant seem to get rid of it. Im 5 ft. 1 inch so i gotta watch what i eat and walk a lot daily. I recovered quickly after surgery but my voice got weaker after that.

You'd wanna pay for them however you could bc your basically taking a fake thyroid , it's the control center in your body . You'd feel awful. You could go to a store and by Armor which is used for the thyroid and made from pigs thyroid. But it didn't help me , I gained tons of weight and felt pretty bad . I've heard it works for some but I'm one out of the 10 or more that hasn't done well without my thyroid .. they also found another tumor, carotid body tumor right before surgery which was going to eventually kill me by age 50..

You should be ashamed of yourself for advertising for a cancer center! I have had a thyroidectomy 5 years ago and my life and who I am is unrecognizable because of the synthroid I am now forced to take and because of the permanent after effects of radiation, twice! The experience has been horrifying. My Advice..don't let a doctor remove your whole thyroid if possible. Always get a second opinion and even a third. All doctors want to do is make money off of you with what they are selling, poison and surgeries! Shame on YOU for advertising for them!

Maybe you should find a really good endocrinologist. Millions of people live normal lives after having it removed

What happened after removing it? What way did your life change? I’m due for surgery soon because of cancer we can’t just let it stay and grow it must be removed

@@Armaninabz Mira, I strongly urge you to get a second opinion to see if it is only detected on one side. If it is, don't let them take both sides and force you on fake thyroid hormones for the rest of your life. That is a nightmare. Your body can function fine with one side. Also, if the first iodine radiation doesn't work, dont let them do anymore after that. By the second dose it ruined my ears and my eyes from the radiation and none of the many doctors take any responsibility for it so it remains unfixed, even if it IS fixable after the radiation has done its permanent damage.
Get a second opinion. And understand they care Nothing about the quality of your life. Hopefully you won't have to find that out by making the same mistake I did...trusting them.

Kathy K What kind of ear problem did u get? I have tinnitus if I go abit deaf my tinnitus will worsen !! I’m waiting rite now to speak with the surgeon about what’s going to happen I’m very nervous :( I hope I can keep half of it :(

@@Armaninabz What happened to my ears was about two months into my second iodine radiation treatment I woke up one morning and my eyes felt like glue (no tear ducts working) and my ears were ringing very loud. All doctors denied that it could be from anything they did, ordered or prescribed. I've been to every kind of doctor and they see the problem but no one can fix it or admit how I got it. Can't be around loud music or even have a breeze in my face anymore without sufferieng terribly so I have become a hermit. I lost my life. I know now it was because of the radiation because thats when it all happened.
Doctors will poison you and never admit when it causes perminant damage. Instead, they like to view themselves as your saving angels when all they are really doing is poisoning you for a hell of a lot of money. Radiation and chemo (both poison) is selling like hot cakes! And the doctors couldn't be happier about it. After all, its making Their life GREAT!
