    This video is a beautiful emotional and technical analysis.
    I'm getting more and more desire to try this film, even if the prices (even here in Italy!) are not exactly very low...

    Ferrania P30 and Ilford Ortho Plus. Two films that it is normal to compare. Perhaps the P30 is more suitable for portraits, architectural details, etc., the Ilford for landscaping, also for its natural ability to darken the sky, its sharpness in trapping vegetation. Maybe it's just a suggestion, but the Ferrania seems, with its ancient flavor due to the large amount of silver, to do full justice to the plasticity of my Leica and Zuiko lenses. Ilford makes the images clear, ringing. In any case, two fantastic films. What conclusion have you reached? In any case, thank you for your beautiful and useful videos. Giovanni. Italia

      Thanks Giovanni. My conclusion so far is that P30 carrys more emotion and suits to my shooting style with the Leica M more. Ortho Plus is almost too good and sits in a niche that I don’t know exactly how to utilize. Long story short. Since shooting my first roll of P30 I always have P30 around, whereas I did not buy more Ortho plus since I made the video.

    Just went out to shoot a roll of this film on this white sunday morning after the first fall of snow. Did some long exposure with ND filter at a lake as well. Can‘t wait to see the results.

    Hello Markus, another excellent film review, thank you. I was one of the original Kickstarter backers of Film Ferrania, and although the promised colour slide film is still a long way off, the P30 is a great stepping stone in the process. I absolutely love P30 and have another 5 rolls in stock. The deep blacks and white whites, together with incredibly low grain, make it one of my favourites. I have had no light leakage problems with any of the rolls I have shot, including the Alpha film, so perhaps you have just been unlucky.

    • @TheMPhotography

      Thank you! Good to hear that you had no issues with light leakage. Guess I was unlucky and looking forward to the next rolls that I will be shooting.

    I love the football pitch shot and both images of the shadow on the white wall especially. Some people don't get Ferrania, but it's not like its contrast is a secret. I shot my first roll of it on Sunday. I took a portrait of my 6 year old son which blew me away. He has light freckles but with no filter on my Nikon F2 the freckles were so punchy, it was quite amazing. The silver content makes Ferrania unique and the contrast brings drama. No issues with glitches by the way but I have four more rolls. I guess bracketing more important shots is wise especially with the contrast issue. I actually quite like the slightly underexposed portrait shots I took. I've never seen anything quite like this film. It's beautiful.

    My favorite b&w film these days is Bergger Pancro 400. I tried P30 and can only describe the contrast as harsh without any pleasing midrange tones.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  2 года назад +1

      Definitely on the contrasty side. One needs to want that kook. Not versatile for an everyday film.

    • @Wiencourager

      I did not find it contrasty, but then I develop in Diafine. My first roll was shot on a sunny day at a vintage car show, no trouble with contrast, and highlights and shadows look great. Can’t wait to shoot a lot more of it.

    Look at you getting me all excited about this film Markus, really nice exposition about the film stock, enjoyed it a lot and you've convinced me to pick up some rolls, although I have to say it wasn't that hard ahah HP5 is also one of my favourite film stocks when it comes to black and white so I particularly liked when you mentioned it in relation to P30. Cheers!

    Greetings, I have recently shot a roll of P30 - I noticed a purple streak on my negatives after processing. I have contacted the company regarding this. I suspect that P30 might require a prewash prior to developing. BTW I developed P30 in HC110 (solution B) - I really enjoy the content, keep up the good work!!!

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching. Good idea with the prewash. I did not see purple streaks on my films but you are right, a prewash could improve things. I also love the film and developed it in HC110 solution B.

    No light bleeding issue with P30, but the first alpha batches had consistently issues with horizontal scratches throughout the film (confirmed to me as issue by Ferrania and definitely not from my development!). Bummer for me since I couldn't make prints of those negatives in the darkroom. Newer batches don't seem to suffer from this anymore. P30 is a bit too contrasty for my taste. Agree that P30 has a very limited tonal range which works as benefit in some scenes but also as debit in others.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Martin. I guess my two rolls were bad luck with the light bleeding. At least no horizontal scratches.

    • @MB-or8js
      @MB-or8js 3 года назад

      @@TheMPhotography Make also sure it didn't occur within light baffles in your M camera or during development at some point (I am pretty sure you already did this).

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I didn't shoot the P30 rolls after each other and the films in between didn't show any light bleeding. I would exclude an issue with the M6. No idea why I see those light streaks. Not such a big issue. Will see how it looks on my next rolls that I wills shoot once I get my hands on P30 again.

      @@TheMPhotography that’s clear. What I mean is that it seems quite easy to imitate this high contrast/low grain look, while HP5 and TriX etc. have a more film like characteristic. But the Ferrania films are for sure full of character.

    I have shot a couple of rolls of P30. What developer you are using? I have tried Rodinal stand developed. I was not satisfied and found it underexposed and not worth the effort of stand developing. I had better results with Ilfosol 3. But if I shot it again would use ISO 50. I shot this a couple of years ago and was not too interested in shooting the other 4 rolls that I have, but your video made me want to go for it again. You are right about the "emotion". Looking over my prints confirms that.

    I just got two of Ferrania p30 and I cant wait to try it. On my Canon a1 I got two stops down from ISO 100 to 50. I guess I will use first stop down from 100 which will make like almost iso 90. What do you think? Great video thank you :)

    There's just something about the quality of the blacks and even the whites ... It's almost metallic? It's interesting how there can be such a low amount of detail in the highs and lows, but it somehow holds together. I keep wanting to look at it and push it to see what I can get out of it. I have a couple of rolls left I really want to use soon.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  3 года назад

      Thanks Jamie. Yeah. Fully agree. But somehow beautiful what this film does. And it needs so little post editing to give this vintage look. Happy shooting of your last couple of rolls. I am jealous since I don't have any left and eagerly awaiting them to be in stock again.
