Very interesting to see such a colorful island reduced to it's shapes and contrasts! It makes the photos timeless, but it also takes some of the warmth and vacation feel out of them. It's also interesting to see the mix of the video clips with the pictures. Cool project idea! Cool video!

I am a little late to the party, but thanks for this. I just started using P30 and it's good to see that open sunshine works just as well as open shade with P30. Your approach to the vacation and the self imposed limitation (if that is the right word) of B&W is good discipline and I agree, it's a very different way of seeing. Good for you.

Great to see you back Markus! Thank you for posting. I agree that B&W vs. color is not a matter of good or bad, right or wrong, but they are very different mindsets. Both can be wonderful but each forces different creative choices in composition and working with light. To answer your question directly, I usually pack both for a trip but I find that, when I get there, I usually end up choosing and sticking to one or the other throughout that location. I live in Japan, and there is a lot of color everywhere in Japan, but often I gravitate to B&W.

Thank you Edward. Feels good to be back. I will definitely pack B&W going forward when I will go on my next vacation. I usually was going for color. I am curious if I will approach it like you if I have color and B&W film with me and stick with one type throughout a location. I am guessing it will be like that. Greetings to Japan.

    To be correct :
The Ilford FP4 and Ferrania P30 both are medium speed films.
The Ferrania P30 film has a sensitivity of 30 Schneinergrade.
Schneinergrade always was 10 degree more than DIN.
Low speed films have a sensitivity of 64 ISO /ASA or lower.
Famous low speed films were Adox KB 14, Agfa FF, Ilford Pan F,
Ferrania P24, Kodak Pan X and ORWO NP 10.
Neither the country nor the continent have any effect on the
exposing of a film. Neither on the contrast nor the grain.
Any low, medium or high speed film will do in Greece.
The exposed glass plate negatives at the South Pole in 1911
had a sensitivity of 10 ISO or less.

Great to hear from you and I hope you are doing alright! What a way to kickstart a new wave of videos, this must have been a really proper holiday! I really enjoyed the combination of videoclips and the images in-between. For me it is very simple. 95% of my photography is black and white, so it is natural for me to get a few B&W rolls on a holiday. Job done. Someone once said that colour photography is more about the aesthetics (or it impacts the content of the images) whereas black & white is much more about composition and especially content. It is both limiting in one way and liberating in another. Bad weather? No problem. Good weather? Well, even a sunset might look special in black and white. I simply accept that black and white is what I will get, even if shooting a scene in colour would be amazing. Somehow it helps me to walk away with the feeling that I have got something special because I have shot black and white, while I have seen and rather experienced the colours outside of the camera. We have a tendency of wanting to capture a moment exactly the way we have seen it, so in colour. But we must also remember to sometimes get ourselves out from behind the camera and just live a moment. Maybe black and white helps us capture a moment not the way we have seen it but the way we felt it, which content might reveal better. If we get away from the camera or simply not take a shot, we might just find out that it even improves our images because we might be able to focus more on the "real" ones :). Maybe we will take fewer but more interesting or meaningful images in B&W. I have also enjoyed your pictures and especially the ones of the lighthouse. I have a sweet spot for lighthouses ;). Finally, as for the P30, man that is a tricky film to work with! I tend to end up with underexposed images even if I try to account for that they may become dark :). I sometimes end up using it in too dark circumstances as well. It definitely has a use case and can produce lovely results, with the Mediterranean being one good one with a lot of sun. Shooting inside a building in the middle of the Finnish winter was not awesome, but did give me some nice silhouettes. However, the main reason for me taking a break from the P30 is because I find the impressions of my Tri-X and TMAX (pushed) shots more pleasing to my eyes. Do you have the feeling that P30 images by comparison might look a bit too artificial, almost "computerish"? I do not have that impression with all my P30 images but some. I wonder if it is a matter of the P30 combined with too sharp lenses.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  Год назад +1

Thank you for watching and your feedback. You put it so nicely. For me B&W photos are also often more meaningful. As for the P30. The Mediterranean was perfect. There was enough light throughout the whole day. I managed to hit all exposures pretty well. I was shooting it at box speed. Couldn't observe underexposure. When it comes to what you call artificial look, I can see where you are coming from. It definitely has a different look to Kodak and ILFORD. Especially in the sky I can barely see grain and the grays are of a special kind as well. The FP4 is a lot rougher in comparison. I developed both films with ILFORDs ID-11. As for the sharpness. I have only shot it on my Leica lenses yet. I look at the P30 as in its own category. Maybe together with the Potsdam from Lomography. In my case it will not replace ILFORD FP4 and HP5.

@@TheMPhotography I have got a Summicron 35mm ASPH and a Summaron 28. The latter is pretty sharp compared to the Summicron, and I almost feel like not combining it with the P30. You are right about that some of the grain gets lost. It is a bit clinical in some images. I have got some very nice results with it but my success rate with other B&W films is usually higher than with the P30. When you nail it in a situation where it feels at home, then the P30 is beautiful. But it is definitely not that forgiving. You really need to be more seasoned to get the most out of it :). Anyway, thank you once again for sharing your memories from Crete!

As others said - there is no good or bad when deciding for colour or black and white film. I just think that with the choice of the medium, one should focus on different aspects: B&W is particularly strong when it comes to shapes and lines, whereas a combination of vivid colours only appears as different shades of grey. Therefore I don't understand when people sometimes ask "Should I convert this to b&w or better leave it in colour?". From my view it should be a conscious decision BEFORE the shot and not a way to rescue a bad photo ("If I turn it b&w it will be art!") ;-)

Thanks for watching and your feedback. Fully agree. For a good B&W shot one needs to consider those aspects before the shot.

Hi Markus! Great to see you here again. I really missed your videos.
I find the approach of photographing your vacation only in b&w exciting and absolutely worth repeating.
The restriction changes the view and you can see that in the pictures. An interesting experience.
I myself have not yet photographed exclusively in b&w on vacation. But mostly I limit myself to a single prime, which also changes the view.
This year I'm doing a 52-week project exclusively in b&w and with 50mm, which is teaching me a lot. However, only with digital RAW development.
Ich hoffe, es geht Dir gut.

Hello Markus, good to see you back again. I enjoyed this video very much, and thought that your black & white impressions of Crete were wonderful. I guess that colour film is what most people would choose for this location, but the B&W brought out the shapes, textures and composition very successfully. I am a fan of both those films, but particularly love the contrast in the P30. Having so much light must have been very helpful for the P30 shots. Like others have commented I didn’t like the background music this time, but that is just down to personal taste! I look forward to seeing the new videos you are working on.

Thanks for watching and your feedback. Yes, the light on Crete helped a lot when shooting P30. It brings out a lot of potential. Quick question about the music since I also saw the other comments about some not liking it. Are all the four songs I chose not so good or just the two more traditional ones? Would love to learn and improve my song choices.

Neither good or bad. There's colour in Greece and colour everywhere. Black and white always has that ethereal look about it. Timeless. Spiritual. It's just the nature of black and white and why I still use black and white film. I love delta 3200, the grain adds to that timeless feel. Lovely video today. My wife is Greek and we've been to Greece a few times - long way from Australia! so I love travelogues from Greece, but I'm biased of course.

These photos look great. Curious about how you are rating the P30? and then which way you lean with the light meter in the M6?

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  Год назад +3

I am rating P30 at box speed and varying the light with the shutter speed if I want to emphasize something. The dynamic range is not so great. There is not a lot of latitude. One needs to learn how the film behaves. It adds to the charm of the look.

I really enjoyed this video, thanks for posting it. Some great images in there.
You can definitely see the images change as you got into your stride with the black and white (as opposed to colour).
The Ferrania P30 images in particular I really enjoyed. Contrasty with nice inky blacks! They have a nice dreamy quality to them. (Especially towards the end of the video). Shooting in bright sunshine and exposing for that gave some really nice ‘expressionist’ silhouette images with the subjects. 👍🏻
I‘ve found embracing black and white like that can bring some great results that have a feel you won’t get with colour.
What lens we’re you using? 35? Or possibly wider I think. Anyway, great video, nice work!
    👍🏻😁👍🏻.
