No more energy crashes, better sleep and my increased strength has made everything in my life easier. Oh and for the first time since my 20s I've actually lost some belly fat!

My father is from Greece and has always eaten the Mediterranean diet he grew up on. He’s a healthy, slim, active, 94-years old and needs no medication! He eats lots of fish, salad and other veggies, legumes, and fruit, and occasionally a little meat. He does eat a single piece of bread with each meal, but he is a man and 6-ft. tall, so he needs more food than, say, I do, at only 5’4” tall. Only traditional sourdough bread in the US is still made without sugar, so that’s what he eats (and all I eat, if I eat any, but it’s a rare treat for me). But, real sourdough bread is only available west of the Rockies, generally. When I went to grad school in the Midwest, I couldn’t find any bread without sugar in it and really missed our San Francisco sourdough. Since the low-fat craze, brands use more sugar than ever, it’s a dirt-cheap substitute for healthier ingredients. I don’t like cake-sweet bread, if I wanted cake, I would just have a piece of a nice cake instead. With the huge diabetes epidemic in this country, US, it’s best to stop eating sugar. Indeed, it meets the criteria fir a human toxin, we wouldn’t think of eating other substances that do!

It is a better lifestyle and food in Greece and many other countries due to consumption of healthy unprocessed food in other countries. America is full of processed and junk food. Greek food is the best in the world because the way Greeks act in their life is what they know from older generations and the older generations learned from the generations before them and so on. So it is traditional to eat healthy foods, Greek foods only which are the healthiest Mediterranean food. It’s a thing. My mother who is British married my father and saw that Greek food is the best. You feel better and healthier. I will not change it for anything. But I love to taste from other countries too. Because each country has its own way of cooking. I I am a big foodie. Without forgetting the Greek ways. “ A healthy mind in a healthy body “. Which means READ GOOD BOOKS , BE ACTIVE AND EAT GOOD FOOD.

If we Americans want to avoid sugar, we have to avoid processed foods altogether, they are packed with it. They even put sugar in things like prepared salad dressings and mayonnaise, they taste disgusting! I lost 50 lbs. over the last 5-10 years by giving up all forms of sugar (manufacturers use all sorts of names for it), most carbs. and a daily walk. I’m 64 and it wasn’t all that difficult, really, but it’s gradual. I noticed that this last year, because I couldn’t walk as much, I look and feel fatter, but I haven’t gained any weight. I think its from loss of muscle mass and increase of body fat. I need to push myself to walk a bit more and, I think, eat more protein, I rely too much more on dairy foods for that. Great advice, thanks, Alice❤

If you increase your protein and start lifting weights not only will you regain lost muscle you will also gain an astonishing amount of energy. I used to collapse on the couch after work for the whole rest of the evening after dinner. Now I"m on the couch for 15 min and keep popping up to ... do the laundry, clean the kitchen, run the vacuum, go for an after dinner stroll etc etc as I'm genuinely bounding with energy. Not sure if it's the protein, the weight lifting or both but it's been amazing. I've also cut massively back on any carb with a high glycemic load - so pasta, rice, etc. I think this has really helped stabilize my blood sugar so that it's more even all the time?? Anyway moods better, energy better and 1.5 inches of belly fat gone bye bye :-) Good luck on your own journey!

I live in the U. S. and most people here would be shocked by what a serving size of any food truly looks like. A serving size on most cereal packages is one cup with half a cup of milk. We typically eat 2-3 times that amount. Restaurant portions are obscene.

I'll be 65 in a week and have been on bioidentical HRT for about 15 years. Since menopause I have gained about 8-10 pounds on my petite frame, all of it around my waist. However, over the past 6 months I have reduced my alcohol intake, ramped up my exercise regimen, changed my diet to include more vegetables and reduce sugars and to eat more proteins and healthy fats, and I have lost 4-5 pounds again. Still have the love handles, but am hoping some of that will come off. I love the idea of cooking meals at home and setting a beautiful table (we did that during Covid --date night at home) and especially slowing down to enjoy life! What a fabulous way to live!

No one needs to eat that much food for one meal. Also, we do have the option to choose natural hormones but it is much more expensive. They called that beautiful lady fat? It’s so hard for women to be in the public eye, we get judged by such impossible standards! Thank goodness, I don’t have to be, my healthy 125 lb. figure would be considered obese, then. It must take a lot of courage for women to take on public roles, it’s hard enough being a private person and female. I’ve been criticized for having “deep-set eyes”, for example, but what, exactly, am I supposed to do about it? Even if we keep ourselves in perfect condition and turn ourselves out perfectly every day, everyone has less-than-perfect features. Men just aren’t judged for their appearance like that.

The problem with the US food is that too many people are eating processed foods and foods with all sorts of chemicals that are banned in Europe. That's why there is so much obesity here. Eating all the time is what shocks me when I travel the states for my work. In the south and the mid/west. The north east and PNW was less shocking, but the rest of the country left me astonished. I saw very little exercise and no walking because the whole place is so car and freeway oriented. Europe is like another planet compared to the vast flyover regions of the US. And the portion sizes. Single Slices the size of a family pizza, with a large pack of cheese per ‘serve’. Trying to find fresh salad and vegetables to buy was really hard - all pre-cut and packaged. All the salads pre dressed with sugary dressings. France is like a total heaven after than. I don’t think you can really knock us just because of the layout of towns versus cities …one you need a car, the other you can take public transportation or walk….you couldn’t find a produce section? There’s fresh produce in every major grocery store, not prepackaged. You can get just plain oil and vinegar for dressing. It’s one thing for someone to complain about their own country. You know what people don’t like? Listening to people from other countries complain about it. Should I complain about France?

Wow. We look at data, not individuals. France has the lowest obesity in the first world. America by far the worst, with the UK running to catch you. That you are not overweight is utterly irrelevant. To travellers to the US, the state of food and weight health is just astonishing. I could not find fresh food to buy travelling the South/West. I am a highly educated, nutritionally informed person, and it was a constant battle. Even Chicago, a great vibrant city, it was really hard (I was on the road for 18months). In the flyover, there is a MASSIVE problem, literally as well as in terms of health and wellbeing. It is not a personal criticism of you, but of the national priorities and systems. Education and availability are hugely important to food health. Europe makes that easy, the US makes it nearly impossible. If you know anything about studies and 'stats' then you also know that who funds the studies and stats are who pays for them. This is not rocket science. Perhaps you need to look around for yourself? There are fat people in France, Italy and other countries! Just look...fat people in USA too! Look outside of Paris and other major cities? I agree that what we have available in USA is not pure! What are the little round balls that you have added to your salad at 12.59?
I have reduced my weight and managed to keep it off by portion control, sugar and fat reduction, stopping eating after 6/7 pm. Awareness of type of food I’m eating and getting some exercise is important.

While I agree with MOST of this l, CUTTING out RED meat is a MISTAKE. Yes, IT is IMPORTANT to be BALANCED, but Red MEAT is EXTRAORDINARILY healthy FOR you, ESPECIALLY as you AGE!

    • @Kate-lk6tw
      @Kate-lk6tw Месяц назад +1

Cutting out red meat has improved my life in every possible way, and the scholars of Yale, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge all conclude that everything is better without meat - planet earth has a future, we have better digestion and cardiovascular health, lower cholesterol and we do not permit dreadful cruelty and exploitation of animals in our name. If we were meant to eat red meat, we would not need stoves and steak knives. When people act about consumption of red meat like they are proselytising a religion, you know there is something wrong.

Alice, not all Americans fat, not all restaurants in US have XXL meal portions. I enjoy watching your channel, I do love French culture for many reasons, but Alice, pleeeese stop comparing French culture to American.

Wholeheartedly agree! Speaking as an American woman who has been taking care of my body with high quality foods and supplements, exercise, etc. for more than a decade, not all Americans are overweight, sedentary, and clueless. I enjoy the tips and always liked this channel. Recently, the commentary here has too much of a superior and condescending tone, too much cliche against other cultures. I say this with no ill will - Alice, please stop this, or you will be losing viewers.

France has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, higher than the United States. Yes, it’s true that the correlation between using HRT and developing breast cancer was overstated for many years, but there’s still an elevated risk of developing breast cancer when using HRT. Alice, I love your videos but please be careful when discussing this important topic
