    Wonderful. My biggest reason why I start small, is the satisfying feel seeing them grow into giants! Almost all my plants were from small. Those big cuttings were from before I understood the satisfaction of growing from small. If I had to do it all over again, I'd get them all baby size! 😁

  • @SparkleInMoonlight
    @SparkleInMoonlight 2 года назад +13

    Totally agree. Starting with baby plants make them much more fuss-free - all my calatheas that I bought very small that grew up in my home are easy going and very resilient. And the joy of seeing the small plants grow large - priceless 🙂

    Your videos saved me so much space and arguments with my husband 😂 growing vertically is genius! I don’t have to downsize my collection due to space, and I love that they get more nutrients this way. It just makes sense. The only downside: now I want more alocasia because I have space! 😂

    Thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning so much. Have been transferring my philodendrons from coco coir poles which have done nothing for my plants, to your DIY moss poles. In doing so, also changing my soil to a more aerated mix. When repotting I noticed the soil at the base of the pot was very damp...not good! Will be starting some of my smaller plants and cuttings immediately in a better aerated soil and on moss poles right from the start. You have inspired me to go to the next level with my collection...thank you! Cheers!

    I just love seeing the smaller pots! Im just starting off so its nice to see them in small form as well as the massive ones! The epi pin variegata...I have one that I JUST put on a pole. I had to chuckle when you said yours wasnt showing much variegation yet. Mine isnt even showing half kf what yours is. 🤭
    I also laughed when you said you have multiples of the same plants. I do the same thing! Ive actually been giving away some of the ones that i have multiples of. Im trying to downsize before winter starts. (And yet i still bought a new plant yesterday 🤦🏼‍♀️😅)

    I planted my first two plants on moss poles today, an adonsonii & a white princess. I’m in Perth so have a couple of months of growing season so I hope to see a few new leaves & roots. A few months ago I had a support worker who deliberately killed most of my favourite plants so I have been a bit depressed. Starting this new project has cheered me up a bit. It’s hard to afford new cuttings of pretty plants when you have a big die off over a short period of time.

    Question. Considering the poles require a lot of water to stay a consistent moisture, do you water the actual plant or just the pole? Since gravity pulls the water down I’ve always wondered if I really need to water the plant (planter) or just the pole since the water will eventually make it to the planter.

    Hi Jan, thank you for your videos, they are a great help to me.
    I am trying your mosspole technique on different plants and it seems to be working great. The plants are rooting into the poll and growing nicely. However I have started to notice that (some) roots have started rotting in the moss, or atleast it looks that way. I let the moss dry out abit in between watering, when I notice the moss is slightly crunchy I top water the moss untill its saturated. What could be happening?
    Thanks again!

    What is the plant behind your left shoulder in this video?

    While hard to say for sure without a much clearer view, the "algae" you reference around 9:55 is most likely moss spores coming back to life from the sphagnum moss. 😃

    Hi Sydneyplantguy, thanks for the educational and helpful video once again! I was wondering what is the diameter/measurements of your see through pots in centimeters? On video it is quite hard to see how big is it.

      They come in 10cm ,14cm & 20cm. In this video I use the 14 & 20 cm ones

    Is algae bad for a plant/moss pole? Is it stealing nutrients or something?

    I’m using a chicken wire fence for my moss pole but it doesn’t seem to have the vertical stability needed to stand up on its own. I put a bamboo stick through it but it still doesn’t work. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  5 месяцев назад

      Probably just best to get a thicker wire mesh … u’ll appreciate it in the long run:)

    @sydneyplantguy how important is moss quality for moss poles? I'm in Europe and can't get the brand you use. The cheapest I can find is 1 kg of Chilean moss, but it's still expensive imo

      I have never used a different moss so can't speak from my own experiences but I've heard that some lower quality Moss can have lower water retention capacity & if it was stored incorrectly it can often come with mold issues.

    Do fungus gnats breed in moss poles also?

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  4 месяца назад

      Never experienced that but technically they could breed in any organic matter
