THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! Very easy to make and solves two problems that literally no other moss pole addresses: reusability and getting plants out of them without mangling the roots. The only downside is decreased exposed area for plants to climb compared with D-shaped moss poles (can fit more stems on these), but the pros far outweigh this one con. I have several plants that have been happily climbing these poles for about six months now. I did not make the separate bottom piece and have not had issues with roots wrapping around. Can't thank you enough Lee!
There’s so many benefits to this design IMO opinion, especially when removing plants for propagation. It may seem harder for people who aren’t that competent with power tools but if you know how to use them this would be so quick. Nice job!
Power tools, acetone, spray paint, goggles and mask…. No, I stick with the netting poles with a steel rod as extra support. They can be made at my dining table without making a mess to be cleaned afterwards. But I’ll give you a thumbs up for your ingenuity! 👍🏻

My favorite video of yours so far. Well done!!! Seems like the key elements are to enclose as much of your pole as possible while giving your plant stems enough surface area to root into. Love the no grid aspect and minimum fasteners. And yes yes yes on the matte black and making pieces in bulk for easy future maintenance. The lazy pole with clear bendy plastic is pretty easy too. I used acrylic stakes for support and cut the plastic to create a ‘C’ shape. Then I cut plastic strips to fit around the plastic, moss and stem. I cut the width to fit in between the petioles. I add moss and fasteners as the plant grows. The clear plastic backing is barely visible and extends around 1/3 higher than the total height of the plant. RUclipsrs youdontevengrowhere and unplantparenthood give some great examples. But your version is definitely more substantial which seems more ideal when strong support is beneficial (like when pets or people may knock into them). Grateful for this inspiration!

@@KillThisPlant, I hope my stakes inside the plastic provides adequate stability but nothing like the stability of yours. Your version is genius. I wouldn't say it's the best or the easiest but it is another option for some. The tools required alone cancels most people out of being able to make their own or even possibly being charged to have them cut to size. You could patent and market the idea though or just make some to sell. I would also consider trying to see how easily it would hold the moss with both sides cut out as another option. For folks who like fuller plants, plants on both sides or even less of the pipe visually to worry about aesthetics wise.
right, power tools automatically make it impossible for me. I can make the mesh fronts with plastic backing all from products I can find online and be delivered. Plus I want to see inside the poles to see the plant roots. My only concern with the PVC poles and cutting out both sides like you suggested, would keeping the moss damp if they're that open. It would be great though for air circulation and keeping pests out, but you'd definitely be spraying them down once a day, which is already a huge complaint for a lot of moss pole users, they don't have the time.

PVC dust isn't something to mess around with, neither is dioxin, which is released upon getting PVC to it's melting point whilst cutting it for example. Stay safe and enjoy your build 🤗
Great idea! I have started making these now as my standard moss pole. I found that filling the pipe with sphagnum moss was expensive so now I screw a 25mm x 25mm old hardwood tomato stake inside the back of the pipe section (along its whole length) to reduce the amount of moss I use. I figure if this timber gets saturated then it will help in preventing the moss and plant roots from drying out. Also, I find that when I cut-out sections for the pipe, i can glue two sections at both ends into a connectors or bits of pipe and form a double-sided moss pole. I then grow the two of the same plants up on either side of the pole. The section that is below the soil level in the pot I usually fill with coco coir to save on moss or potting medium, and to provide a moisture retentive point at the base of the pole. I use a circular saw for cutting the pipe. Takes a bit of practice and a lot of patience to not crack the plastic. I also paint the white tubes with black fence paint once they are made.

I thought about making moss poles like that for a year now but never actually went on to do it. Good to see that you did. The thing I like the most about it is that you don't need a netting, because when you gotta propagate, the netting is the most disgusting part because theres hundreds of aerial roots going in. A big downside to this is (in my opinion) that you'd need a very strong base, because stacking two PVC pipes above each other will make the pole super heavy - it'll end in a catastrophe if you don't have your plant sitting in a heavy pot. Another downside would be that it's just ugly as hell. PVC? Hell nah, I like a nice clear plastic backed moss pole a hundred times more.
Brilliant! Between you, Nora and Sydney plant guy ( Jan) there's gonna be some happy plants with support that works for everyone's individual taste and skillset. Thanks for the genius extendable moss pole ideas!😻

I enjoy your vlogs and her, they're like my comfort video to make me less stress and more happy. Keep it it thanks Dude
Clever take on it. Though, one pit fall I see is you're not going to be able to grow many plants on these type moss poles due to limited surface area of the moss only being at the front of the pole. I'm just hating as I love growing multiple plants growing up all sides of my poles. :D Great work mate!
True, I would recommend maybe 1-2 max? And particularly plants that stay having relatively thin stems, pothos, philodendron, some Monstera (not deliciosa and especially not large form). I wonder if making this with a 4" tube would produce the kind of growing surface that could support multiple plants. Thanks for watching and the comment, I appreciate it.
That is an interesting observation and true. My pothos when they get big have massive stems, really thick and I like to double or triple plant so something to keep in mind for sure.
@@croom1454 I'm not sure how structurally sound that would be unless you greatly reduced the width of the openings. You could wrap it with netting afterwards but that an interesting thing to consider.
I have a question..how soon or at what height of the plant should I start thinking about putting on a pole? And should I only make the transition at the beginning of the growing season or does it matter..Ive heard of the pittfalls of repotting so late in the season.
Haha cute video with the cameo! If i hadnt seen Nora's video first id never have known you were a fellow Canadian! Also very good idea on the poles. Very easy

The cameo from Nora was awesome!!!
DUDE! YAAAAAAS! Your a boss for this
Why is she there ahahahha im watching both of your vlog and hers.. I need references and also ideas on this moss pole diy. I'll try to look for your coco fiber pole vlog next time and also hers. I enjoy your vlogs and her, they're like my comfort video to make me less stress and more happy. Keep it it thanks Dude
ooohhhhh! I LOVE this design.
When you putting these on the market, I’m ready!
Having the Leca Queen cameo was a great touch. Nice job Lee.
I loved every part of this video and didn't think it could get any better but then the end. :D
Super informative and straightforward thank you for sharing! Favorite line, rude and it hurts my feelings, 😆 love your videos!
LOVE THIS!!!, so much better than the moss poles I have made
I had the same idea, glad I wasnt the only one thinking about this.
😂❤. Love it.
The end!!! 😅...
Congratulations!!!!
Going to the store to get the materials I think I found the way of making this.
Thank you 🙏🏾
Perfect timing!!! I'm about to repot and pole my Monstera
I like this so much. I think. I'd cap the bottom and fill with rocks to make it sturdier. Drill a few holes so water goes into to soil too.
That might work too! I leave the bottom open to leave more space for roots. But your idea would for sure make it more sturdy.
@@KillThisPlant just cut holes in all directions and leave some space in hight between them. a lot of work but it will do perfectly fine.
That is an interesting observation and true. My pothos when they get big have massive stems, really thick and I like to double or triple plant so something to keep in mind for sure.
I don't know if it would work the same or not, but what if you did the same thing on the other side? Or would the moss not stay in the same way?
@@croom1454 I'm not sure how structurally sound that would be unless you greatly reduced the width of the openings.
You could wrap it with netting afterwards but that an interesting thing to consider.
Love the cameo 😭🤣🤣🤣 I’m a fan of you both
Omg. I have heard this Idea for so long but been lazy to do it 😂
But I'm glad you show us how and what to buy and do.
Skit at the end was great🤩 My scindapsus exotica is the first I'd like to use a pole on
That'd look great!
Love the collab..between you two I've learned so much..Nora is the best...pardon me..The Leca Queen is the best.
You are too kind 🥰
I have a question..how soon or at what height of the plant should I start thinking about putting on a pole? And should I only make the transition at the beginning of the growing season or does it matter..Ive heard of the pittfalls of repotting so late in the season.
Haha cute video with the cameo! If i hadnt seen Nora's video first id never have known you were a fellow Canadian! Also very good idea on the poles. Very easy
Brilliance!!!!! Thank you & bless you!
This is a great idea. I think I’m going to try it tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration
