Hi Guys! Another great video.A friend I fly with turned me onto this plane, he loves it. He took it way up, I'm guessing 350 to 400ft. Killed the motor than spent the next 10 minutes flying lazy large circles. back to Earth. He got to 10ft off the deck, hit the throttle ....rinse and repeat. I ordered mine via your link this morning. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Ordered my second Night Radian via your channel. After a full day of slope soaring on some bumps in front of my home....My dog distracted me with a bark. So now ... the Eagles have my Night Radian which can easily be seen from the field I fly . I have a permanent reminder to pay attention or pay Brian. ;-)

I just stopped by here to use your link on my way to pick up my 3rd Night Radian. The first one met an early demise in an eagle's nest. The second taught me what I needed to get up to speed flying RC. Sadly, the fuse is a wee bit shorter and bent like and "S" and sports all the blemishes any newbie will do. Damn these things can take a beating. Still flies great! These sailplanes are everything you say and more! #3 is going to get flaps. I've got 200 acres to fly around. When the conditions are right, it's hell to land. I can get the plane coming at me a ½ mile away 10 feet in the air. Hands off...By the time it gets to me its over 100 feet+. I now know when the eagles, hawks and vultures are out, there's a pretty good chance of losing the plane. The thermals here are so good. Just having an absolute ball!

I never lost control of the plane even though I found the plane at 1am slightly over 2 miles from my house. We looked with drones for a bit and then we just drove down roads and eventually found it 2miles away in a ditch with zero damage. Took it home and flew 2 more batteries. I bought a Night Radian after watching this video and I've had about 6 flights so far. It's a great plane.
A couple of questions: 1) when mixing your rudder and ailerons, is there a way to limit the travel of the servo? I have an NX8 and if you use both controls it goes beyond 100%.
    2) do you mix in any down elevator with the throttle? Mine likes to pitch up like crazy under full throttle and yours doesn't seem to do that.
    Thanks!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      1) I did less for the aileron to rudder mix....like 50% or so just to be careful, but you could also setup the absolute position in the SERVO SETUP area....but that's only if you're REALLY concerned.

I love the idea of the cool night lights on this but I feel that maybe the 1.5m Conscendo Evolution might suit my needs more (first glider, interested in slope soaring, higher wind tolerance maybe(?), robust to put in the back of the car without dismantling).
Which would be your recommendation? Thanks in advance

Nice vid Brian & "Camera Crew"! I have the same plane and purchased 3 weeks ago. 32:16 What I did before I used tape is...on the tail used 2 straight pins about 1 inch apart on each side where the plastic is on the rear stabilizer. Got the straight pin warm with a lighter and pushed it thru, then cut off the excess underneath and optionally placed a dab of CA/hot glue on the needle head. It's an old trick from the modelers magazines from the past. I fly mine with the Radiomaster TX16S and am having trouble trying to get the SAFE switch active on CH5, or any for that matter? It's no big deal I've been flying since 1986 but would like to have the option incase I want to train someone or let them fly? I followed another RUclipsr "Props & Wheels" video step by step no luck? I think it has to do with Spektrum's AR631 RX? Guys were not having issues with the older RX's like the AR636A which work on the TX16S without issues. If anyone uses the TX16S and has the "AR631" SAFE Select working on a switch please post for me. Thanks!

Great idea with the push pin! I like it!!! I don't know if you can go as low as channel 5 for SAFE assignment....but wasn't this plane the one that we had to assign inside FORWARD PROGRAMMING???? Check out the radio setup part and see ;)
I just talked to a guy at a plant I work at as part of my day job, and he said there's a Lua Script that can be used to allow you to emulate getting into and out of FORWARD PROGRAMMING.
The new Rx'es (AR631 / AR637T..and some others) use FORWARD PROGRAMMING to setup all the SAFE and AS3X features. This plane was the first and only that we had to get into to assign SAFE SELECT to a switch.

Brian, I would appreciate your thoughts. I purchased a Night Radian and attempted to assemble it prior to watching your video. I noticed you had a slight amount of difficulty with the wing spar insertion. However, not nearly as much as I have with mine. It remains unassembled at this moment because I wasn't able to get the spar to insert completely in either wing half. Both wings, if you inspect closely now have indentions from my grasping it so hard. I have had some that were extremely snug and required considerable effort, but never a plan where the most penetration (pardon the expression) was about 2 inches short of hitting the stop. It's a good thing that our night flight was cancelled due to weather so I didn't attempt to assemble this at the field. Any ideas? I am a great fan and am still waiting for the role reversal where you are the camera crew. :-)

If it still gives you the heebe-jeebies, then you can just cut it and install CA hinges or what I like to call finger hinges (links below for clarity)...
      CA Hinges - amzn.to/3jmueQg
      Finger Hinges - amzn.to/3HSaVZ6

Longer means you can leave them PLUGGED IN, then just pull the wing off and put it on the side of the fuselage. Works nicely, but you might want to disconnect them at the wing roots and leave them plugged into that little breakout board.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  8 месяцев назад +1

I wouldn't get this particular glider as a first plane, but it would be a fine plane as a first "batch" of planes, if that makes sense...probably won't make sense until you're hooked like me ;)
As for beginner planes, this plane would not be the worst option...only that it's pretty heavy for a glider, and you can get simpler sail planes that might help you get a "feel" first. Also, this is a 3 Channel (elevator, rudder, throttle), and I think you should be trying to fly with all the "primary" flight controls (elevator, rudder, ailerons, throttle) before you try a 3 CH...which does probably go in the face of loads of advice from others from "back in the day" but to be frank, you can get a lot of help from systems like SAFE, and have an easier time of avoiding TREES and stuff like that if you get a 4 ch, plus the SAFE (auto-leveling) and AS3X (Stabilization) will make the plane fly a straighter line, and keep under control better...hence the "new" advice - hope this makes sense...but if you like this plane, no reason you couldn't get it now, and just put it in the rotation of your trainers...I just want you to get the BEST bang for your buck, and find success...then it will translate to generally WHATEVER you want...might be a year or two, but it will happen, if you fly enough. Don't discount this year to two-years of trainers...you will LOVE IT. It's the hardest part of the hobby, but it's not just hard, it's super rewarding. It's amazing, as an adult, being in a position where you need to ask for help, seek tons of advice, and still just more or less suck at doing something that you really want to do...it's like being a kid, except you get the adult credit card to fund it ;) ANNNND the Credit Card bill ;( - but really, if you're anything like me, this too will help direct your path. If you're not a lotto winner, you won't have an unlimited budget - we'll try to help you get the best shot at success. Remember, many try, but loads fail - It's usually because they act on bad advice (sad, but true).

Is it the LED lights that make you want this plane?
If ni, I would suggest another sail plane. 2 2-meter wingspan is going to require a lot of space. I'm in the same boat as you but started out with a cheap Chinese sailplane with a 70 cm wingspan and 250 grams. The XK A800. I think you can get that for $110 ish and it is RTF- ready to fly so it comes with everything. Be prepared to crash a lot. I owned 3 of those planes and ended up giving the 3rd plane to my buddy. I now have an Apprentice STS I bought as an RTF trainer. You "only" need a battery and charger. I love my plane. It came with a Spectrum dxS transmitter. Not the best one but way better than a cheap Chinese one. I paid around $420 in Denmark and around $87 for a 3300mAh battery and charger. The plane is perfect for beginners and you can grow with it since it has SAFE technology. 1.5 wingspan and weighs around 1400 grams minus the battery. It can take a lot of wind. Check my channel, I got a video where I fly at 20 mph, but not filmed very well. I hope it helps. I'm a beginner myself :)

Looks hard to bind these planes to the radios...

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

It's not hard, I just try to do it too close, in hopes of sharing a shot of both halves of the equation working simultaneously - we used to get it almost every time, but now, I seem to miss it most all the time - LOL.
Binding is about as easy as it can be, but there are some challenges due to FILMING it - hope this makes sense. If I was binding it off camera, I'd just say, "Megan, give me a hand for a second" and we'd probably get it on our first crack every time ;)

Wait, did I just hear that correctly?
Brian: “Just ram it all the way in…just shove it in as deep as you can and she’ll be happy.”
    Wife: “Something like that.”

You have to add a small adapter, which I have coming - it's a 3rd party device, and we'll share it ASAP when it arrives. Thanks for asking!

No matter what I try only AS3X works, SAFE will not activate. My NX10 doesn't go into forward programing, it says trying to connect, but then says, failed. I have watched your video over and over again. I'm missing something...

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Год назад +1

Have you tried the switch flipper method? It's the OLDER way.
Might need to try to BIND in SAFE, then turn it on and off with your designated channel. These are running older firmware, so forward programming might not yet exist on yours.
Forgive the template reply below, but used to have to share this all the time...
Step 1) Make sure you're BOUND with SAFE SELECT ON. If you're NOT 100% sure - DO IT AGAIN, and make sure the surfaces "Dance" through the mix TWICE at power up...NOT ONCE...Once means you're in AS3X only mode.
Step 2) Go to MONITOR MODE, and watch the switch change the condition of the channel you THINK is assigned to the SWITCH YOU WANT TO USE - If it doesn't change state, go to System Setup and make the Channel Assignment to that switch. Now exit the menu and verify the changes took in Monitor Mode.
Step 3) Now that you're 100% sure you're BOUND in SAFE Select, and you have an operational switch for channel (I think 5-8) assigned, go ahead and pull both sticks DOWN and IN, and then toggle the switch to a count to 10 (NOT 5)....most people don't count a FULL CYCLE of the switch...so they never get to 5 full back and forth cycles... On step 9 of 10, you'll see the surfaces twitch, and on 10 of 10 they'll "recenter" again.
Here's PROBABLY what you're doing wrong...it's a super easy mistake to make, and you'll immediately get it if you are doing this wrong...
Switch Up to Switch Down = 1
Switch Down to Switch Up = 2
Switch Up to Switch Down = 3
Switch Down to Switch Up = 4
Switch Up to Switch Down = 5
Switch Down to Switch Up = 6
Switch Up to Switch Down = 7
Switch Down to Switch Up = 8
Switch Up to Switch Down = 9
Switch Down to Switch Up = 10
When Horizon Hobby wrote those instructions they said 5 times, so this is what they meant, but it's confusing if not elaborated upon...
Switch Up to Switch Down = 0
Switch Down to Switch Up = 1
Switch Up to Switch Down = 1
Switch Down to Switch Up = 2
Switch Up to Switch Down = 2
Switch Down to Switch Up = 3
Switch Up to Switch Down = 3
Switch Down to Switch Up = 4
Switch Up to Switch Down = 4
Switch Down to Switch Up = 5
      ...pretty confusing, right??!?!?
Step 4) The ONLY issue that might prevent this all from working is that your sticks are WAY out of calibration... if so, the Tx might not realize you're in the Lower Left or Lower Right position, thus preventing the designation when you hit flip 10... so if this ends up being the case, which I highly doubt, then you need to calibrate your sticks and then follow back from step 2 maybe.
Good luck - you can do it!
