    Why the hang ups on highlights-when ND solves the problem? If you’re shooting BRAW then as long as you capture the scene without blowing the top or crushing the bottom of your scopes, the rest gets sorted out in post. You might have to build a custom LUT (very easy to do in Resolve) for your monitor to give clients a peek of a partially graded look on set. Standard LUTS probably won’t work very well. The camera is too new. And maybe try the PolarPro matte box with the variable ND option. Between that and the internal NDs you can have something like 15 stops to work with if needed. Very light to carry and very quick to adjust.

    I keep listening to this, and there’s no reason the two cameras can’t be shot at the same ISO. However, the mid gray point will fall in a different spot on the scopes (meaning the clips will not have the same side by side exposure in Log). And when you get to post, the ARRI you might pull down to add more detail in the highlights, and the 12k you might pull up, to dial in the mid point, and to add details to the shadows. But in both cases you will have about 14 stops in the footage. If the ARRI needs 2 stops of ND to get the desired depth of field, then the 12k might need 4 stops to balance the highlights, but in the end you have all of the scene in the can. It’s just a different starting point for your curves adjustment in Resolve or where ever you do the color correction. Expose to each camera’s strengths. That’s the only way.

    The P6K has more "latitude" than the Alexa (so yes, you can "recover" more details after over/underexposure). Although, the Alexa has more dynamic range (it can see more stops of light at once). Not the same thing.

      Highlight recovery in raw is getting really good now days, but the problem with it is that as soon as you change the wb to anything but the native wb it has these weird pink artifacts on the highlights, also on anything that's not pure white it's very easy for the recovered details to have strange colors. That's the advantage with arri, all of the highlight detail are not artificially recreated and the white balance metadata can be changed without impacting highlight details.

    Why dont you use ACES? It's created to match cameras easily. It's under color management. Choose output device transform to REC709 and done. Input Device Transform will not affect the image till you work with RAW. Exposure compensation can be done with the "offset" wheel, you dont have to touch anything in the camera raw tab to match the image.

    The only difference I see is that Alexa is converted to video colors while Ursa needs grading. Ursa is undersaturated, undercontrasted. You are comparing oranges to apples. If you think this is a comparison then you indeed need a LUT.

    I don't know why you are telling that the Alexa has more DR if both cameras don't clipping? To me it is just different gamma curves. try out playing with curves...

    just underexpose, with zebras and waveform, I honestly don't bother much with middle gray, just don't clip the highlights, and than see how much dynamic range is in the shadows is my approach

    • @Jsfilmz
      @Jsfilmz  4 года назад

      how would you underexpose it? change iso? change f stop? nd? just curious

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 4 года назад +1

      @@Jsfilmz use nd filters or stop down, just set zebras to 100% so you don't clip. and than recover detail from-shadows. iso should be ignored when exposing a cinema camera (native iso can be used, but it doesn't matter that much). just expose for the maximum amount of dynamic range the camera can do, which usually means making your image as bright as possible without clipping the whites (just below clipping). and than recovering the shadow detail
      (use zebras at 100%,as they measure the total dynamic range of the sensor, and zebras can ignore the iso. that being said some cameras will clip at 95% or less if they are not ignoring iso)

      @@Jsfilmz you could always use shutter angle for testing purposes. and get a heavy ir cut and nd filter (or a lens that can stop down to f22). or with 12k you may be able to always use shutter angle at 1/800th (10 degress or something), and than add the motion blur back in post. would be processor intensive though. the arri still wins though

  • @DennisSchmitz

    Seems like there's a huge amount of IR pollution also on the UMP12K. I really don't understand BMD, why wouldn't they implement proper IR cut and OLPF filters??

    Since the goal of 12k in the 20s is to use oversampling to get rid of the noise it should be fine.
    However I would be scared to use an ND Filter which could substantially hit the sharpness as the best ones are really expensive.

    • @waveland
      @waveland 4 года назад

      That’s the challenge. This is a camera designed to appeal to high budget project DPs who already have the rest of the kit. If you’re going to get the most out of the 12k then $9,999.00 is just the price of basic admission. You also need the high quality NDs etc. etc. to get the most out of this new sensor.
