What is Pak Sao in Bruce Lee's JKD? Translated, pak sao means "slapping hand". However, pak doesn't really slap, at all. In reality, the technique of pak sao involves a great deal of information learned by close attention to details. Be sure, pak and slap do not share the same energies, nor even the same results. You may execute a slap, but not Bruce.
His was pak! Nevertheless, pak sao has still another meaning in wing chun. It's in the nature of the meaning whereby Bruce spoke when he defined Jeet Kune Do as, "pak sao and hip". Pak sao's nature is to intercept.
Thus, the name Jeet Kune Do, The Way of the Intercepting Fist. Actually, there are only three ways to intercept. Ahead of the opponent's beat, at the same time as his beat, or behind his beat. We call this a half-beat ahead, same beat, or half- beat behind.

Nice to see pak sideways and at the elbow…so so so many times people do gum sau, pressing at the forearm or wrist etc.
I’ve never done JKD, but the principles of perfection applied here are a pleasure to see.
    Lovely

    Dan Lok,
You are very adept at discovering innovative
solutions to problems of many kinds, and it is,
without a doubt, something that sets you apart,
    simultaneously as Student and Teacher.

Sifu Dan, sir, I want to take this time and commend you on all of your videos. Most instructors get other well trained students in their videos to make it look really good., to make money. On the other hand, you get average students to assist you , and you explain how that we are humans with bad habits, therefore we do not do everything perfect. So, I like the fact that you really train realistically. In all of your videos, you show the good, the bad, and the ugly. I really like it.

Good focus on the pak into the opponent, not simply down or sideways. You can really feel the difference. In time the students will loosen up their movements, remind Jason not to lean forward to punch but move his whole body forward while punching (keeping good posture).
I like your vids, good for wing chun folks and jkd, you have clear practical instruction. If you are up in Michigan some time I'd like to train or practice with you, I am working on blending other things into my wing chun and want to keep learning.

    Hello, Dan
You make great videos and explanation, thank you for that.
I am Ving Tsun practitioner and I think that the first situation(in beginning of the vid) is better to use Jut Sao. With Jut Sao you have better control and the opponent dont have change to give you punch because you are cutting his way.
In the drill my concerns are that you do the correct Pak Sao(Slaping hand is first and punch is second ) but in the beginning of the vid is opposite and for me this drill is not for the move of the beginning.
Thank you again for the explanations and videos, You are awesome!

I understand Paul laptop movement and the short, kinetic movement that steps in forward and disrupts the energy and kinetic movement. You could disrupted with a simple Perry right or left once you disrupt that it’s that kinetic energy that explodes in between you and that conductive energy that pushes you back. It actually gives you a little understanding on how Explosive and kinetic energy works. I’m short on understanding it but I could show you better than I can tell you.

Perhaps before you teach them to pak sao, you teach them the correct way to punch with footwork, and have a better understanding of the center line and forward energy. Also, the tall guy isn't grounded in proper footwork... then perhaps teach them these drills. They are just practicing bad form this way. imo. You obviously know what you're doing but these guys don't seem ready for pak sao.

    *I have a question.*
You're teaching here is that we must not trap in the "very late" scenario whereas Bruce in his book The Tao of Jeet Kune Do states that we should parry at the "last" moment of impact. It somehow contradicts your teachings in the video. Is the "very last" scenario only bad in trapping but good in parrying?

Second very nice drill. I'm a beginner at wing chun but I know a lil history and that jeet kune do is a lil of the same. My question when facing an opponent or enemy, what do you look at on the opponent to what type of offense they will throw. I hope I worded it right. Thanks for the knowledge.

    • @chopsueykungfu
      @chopsueykungfu 6 лет назад +1

Don't be dependent on looking for visual cues. That is a mistake, by the time you see with your eyes, it's often too late. You anticipate the opponents next move via touch in that very moment, and chi sau practice helps with being fluid and dynamic, as situations can change rapidly. Before the actual fight you may not be in contact with opponent. Dan Lok has said best offense is the best defense, so don't wait for the opponent to act, you act first. The space between you and opponent is dangerous because anticipating what they will do is harder. You have to effectively and safely close that gap in an aggressive manner (so be sure to incorporate this into your WC training). Once in close quarters you can use wing chun.

Years ago, a guy attacked me. He flailed his arms like a windmill. He caught me off guard. My instinct was to do a front kick to chest, which knocked him down. He got back up and bum-rushed me. Side-stepped him and smashed him into the wall. That ended it. But how does WC deal with someone who fights, as many do, in such an irrational way?

Good ol Spartan Kick sounds like it worked good. Take his knees out. Use your footwork. Move around him. Its like when a bat comes you. Wait until the right moment one hand will always be back when one is forward if they are flailing like that. My friend does that to me joking. But yeh. Gan Sao, Press in. Take his center, take out the knees, or use footwork to shock and step around him to get his back.

If anyone has ever trained with Bruce Lee’s students, or Wing Chun traditionalists, the pak sao is not a simple trap. It is like getting hit by a truck. Followed by 30 other trucks. Essentially fight over. If anyone ever got to fight Bruce once he developed JKD, they would be drinking their meals out of a straw for the rest of their lives

So the first punch is a sliding counter and not a Pak Sao. You could have countered the Pak Da with your own, but you did not.
There are three “timings” to the Pak Sao, but all Pak’s are done with the hand.
Now your “this has no power,” well you are not pushing anyone when you get caught with that shot.
“When he tries to push in...”
Sigung Bruce would rip that shirt right off of you. He even demonstrated on and blasted a guy that said Bruce could not push him over.
Bruce blasted him in the face knocking him out and then sat down to explain we do not push, we punch.
Wow is your student la terrible at their parrying.
Yes, your students have told us the truth. You are teaching bits and pieces of martial arts and NOT Jeet Kune Do, as JKD is about fighting.
If your students cannot fight, then you have not taught them JKD.
