I've been watching this series for 4 months already. I've always loved bruce lee since i was a kid and have been inspired by his philosophy and what he stood for! I've been trained in boxing since I was 8 by my father (he was a golden glove). Before that I was bullied cuz of me being the smallest kid in my class. Then I saw Bruce lee, a guy who wasn't a muscle bound 6ft tall guy, yet he had that speed, power, strength, as well as that no fear attitude. A guy who could take on anyone no matter how big or tall they were. That's what inspired me to want to learn JKD. I'm currently training in kempo, but low key when my sensei has me spar, I like to use some aspects of JKD during kumite and thanks to this channel it has helped me a lot (especially since there are no JKD schools or teachers in my area or near my area)! Thanks so much Dan! Love your content!!!! Be water my friend!!!!!

I consider myself a student of Bruce Lee my entire life, not directly but through proxy, I have spent my life thus far studying him & learning his philosophy & what little technique I can develop without any training or going train with any martial artists. It has given me the ability & strength to see a world unclouded by uncertainty, helped me defend myself against individuals in my life, & also given me to tools to be adaptable & go with the flow. I very much enjoy your videos. I look forward to learning what I can. I see it as a tool to protect myself & family but never to start a fight, only end one.

I've been practicing martial arts for most of my life. I've only been (officially) practicing Jeet Kune Do for roughly 3 years now, and I will say that for me, Martial Arts wasn't JUST about being able to fight, that was only a by-product. Truthfully, it was about finding myself, and then expressing myself through this physical display of skill.
So to me, the spiritual and mental aspects of the martial art is JUST as important as the physical. You need both in harmony to be a complete person. It's not about being able to kick someone's ass. It's about being able to overcome the obstacles in your life, and learning from the one's you've failed to, no matter what form they may take.
    Thank you for sharing.

High Phoenix1754. Yes it ain’t just about fighting. After watching martial artists for a while, you will realise anyone can imitate Lee’s moves and also look good. He was really good, however had he not made movies, I doubt many would care bout him. He was for sure a real martial artist. I compare him to Napoleon Hill. Who in my opinion, was like the Bruce Lee of self help. Hill, never started any businesses. He sold books. Like Lee, who didn’t win any tournaments and weighed just around ten stone. Like Lee, mostly theory.

Great explanation how Bruce Lee went through the thought process to get to a better philosophy in fighting. I am a big guy ..6' 1" 270 lbs. however I had no concept or idea in fighting. I have been taking JKD for 6 months now and it is amazing. Learning techniques at slow speed and then having the instructor throw punches and kicks at me with boxing gloves on so I can practice everything I have learned is enlightening. Just like Dan says here or elsewhere ...you have to get to the point where you are not thinking but reacting or even anticipating and reading the micro movements of your opponent. It focuses you. That is great for so many things. Also it makes you realize the last thing you want to do is fight someone. It is only there as a last resort but good insurance to have. It has given me confidence. I used to shy away or or avoid situations. Now I can observe and walk on past and still feel good about myself. There is nothing to prove. It is there for survival if I need it and only then.

I was a student of 8th degree Joo Sang Lee with Hwa Rang Do. Back in the 70's, through intensive training that was how he taught. I remember when he told me that I need to be much quicker. I was the fastest one in school except for him. He taught me how to clear my mind of all thoughts so that I could do exactly what you were talking about. He would say in broken English.
" No thinking just doing, if you think about doing it's too late." It was The most awesome feeling.
I would always just like you said sense the smallest movement before the actual technique and I could hit him twice before he could throw his.
As you said there is always more to learn, and humility is a great asset.

Breaking down parts of a class stops thinking & I begin feeling danger/anger, automatically!! Stance(setups from forms), Hips (body begins to twist), Focus(pick targets), Reaction Force, push pull at same time,(snap/whip through the Target)

In this short demo video, you have so expertly demonstrated, apart from his many uniformed, often jealous and ignorant detractors, how much of a martial arts genius Bruce was. Lee's almost superhuman martial arts skills coupled with his ability to rise above and move outside classic martial arts training was a boon to the martial arts and not an insult as so many martial arts perceived of his being a non classical, reality martial arts thinker. Please continue to make this videos, you are giving a great deal of knowledge and understanding to the martial arts community who are willing to open their minds.

Really enjoy these videos. As a child I was introduced to American Taekwondo and was lucky enough to spat with people like Chuck Norris. Understand I was only 9 at the time but he was less than impressed when I kept asking him about his meetings with Bruce Lee. I stopped practicing a couple years later at brown belt because of my parents divorce. Fighting became a way of life for me due to the schools i had to attend. One of those schools the beat on you because you are different. Bruce is very inspirational to me. As are these videos. It's not the same but it's still inspiring to know that there are people out there with more than just themselves in mind.

Those concepts make all the sense in the world, regardless of the martial art studied. Crawl, walk, run, jump, fly... It takes a lot of time and effort to develop to a point, where 'basic knowledge and physical techniques', start to become 'advanced natural execution'... where one does things without having to think about them... and just does them naturally when needed and does them at the right time, with the right placement, and the right level of force.
Bruce worked hours on end to develop those abilities... and the hard work paid off, not just in the physical ability... but in terms of the almost legendary confidence he carried with him in life.
    Definitely enjoy your videos Dan!

to be a good martial artist...yes i agree u must strive to be a good person...ok to be good at fighting...u must practice fighting....if you want to ride a bike fast...then u practice riding a bike....u dont practice swimming to become a fast bike rider....so whats my point??? technique yes conquers all as they say....but to execute without hesitation without error and to act effectively....in a fight....the best thing for me personally...besides the knowledge and the general awareness of conflict situations in a general and also a strategic angle....the actual most valuable attribute that i feel that i value as a fighter now days...is none other than SENSITIVITY....to lift my knee when he lifts his....to feel the exact point that someones body enters striking range...to react with the correct motion to expose the gaps we leave in our defence when we move to attack...to execute the myriad of techniques that we all learn....how many fighters actually dominate their opponents technically?? u know its very few.
.it takes hundreds of hours of actual fighting or at least realistic spaaing with various body types and styles of fighter to learn how to EFFECTIVELY control dominate submit and ultimately defeat your opponent....hundred of hours....there thats my opinion....when i was younger i was lighter stronger but i wasnt smarter...now im older a little less powerful...but i spent ALL my time actually fighting...anyone everyone i didnt care i just wanted to experience as many.skilled.fighters energy as i could find and my reward is that usually i feel the gap as the person opens...and i fill the vacuum...and i dispatch most people in a few movements....ok when i fight someone i consider a.challenge for whatever reason....i strategize...in order to moderate the overbearing threat....i use strategy....but ultimately i would say that the reason i accept a person as.an equal threat or a greater threat than myself...is simply because they have either superior technique...or more likely just plain and simple they have had more hours of experience in actual time spent fighting and devoping their execution of these millions of techniques we learn....most people in their life....will experience.probably once or twice.at the.MOST times.when u would say there.was.no option to fight...and in that case in the street..fights end after the first.person sustains significant.damage from a single.technique...ok....so ull prolly only need to do this once and it will last less.than 20 seconds probably...see what i mean??? its the actual.executing the technique for the correct.circumstance that u need to do....this only.comes.from.actual fighting..and realistic drilling...
    thankyou....

I really appreciate you making the videos about the art and history. I have always loved martial arts since I was a kid. I grew up as an Autistic child and one of our traits is a very large amount of interest in specific things and martial arts has always been fascinating because of the art of self-discipline, motivation, determination, will-power, and becoming humble that are intertwined. I have physical limitations, so I can't kick or do much with my legs with any jumping but I have also taught myself how to play several instruments and developed a strong sense of speed and understanding timing on microscopic levels in audio, which allowed me to open up my mind more and discover the art of timing, speed, dexterity, and strong cognizance in all that is going on around me at all times. All aspects of martial arts are really fascinating and I agree entirely on your stance with technique(s). I have always been a firm believer in this famous expression - "It's not about the size of a dog in the fight. It's about the size of the fight in a dog." Thank you for teaching us and for your honest opinions. I like the way you put things into perspective. ✌✌

I like the last part about hitting something, hurting something, thinking about something and then changing it. Just like our bad habits. They hit us with unexpected surprises, those unexpected things hurt us. That is when you have to think what things you’re doing incorrectly and correcting them to see improvement.

Few years ago, I was lost and tried different kinds of martial arts. I'm not putting down any system but I found myself in JKD for it was an art without a system and it actually requires you to honestly and completely express yourself. There's no JKD school here. All I know about JKD came from this channel, from you Dan and from the books and quotes of Bruce.
JKD.. it isn't about fighting. It isn't even about teaching you something like this or like that.. It's about continuous learning and adapting the good, disregarding the bad ones and putting you in shape not just physically but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
I've been practicing JKD for roughly 3 years and also Wing Chun for 2 months and I learned more about myself and how I see life.
Just like martial arts, life is not about getting breakdowns and losing something, it's actually learning from something and using it as an advantage the next time you face another challenge. It's about being true to yourself and what you are capable of not fighting someone just to get a girlfriend. And just like life, martial arts is a life without system where you have to express yourself honestly and comepletely. You have to stop yourself from being imprisoned in a specific style because it prevents improvement.
*You'll find the true essence of martial arts in you...*

I am a short person and found bullies love to pick ones smaller. At first, I was just uncontrollably crazy beserker in a fight and was known as a "chuck a nut". At the boarding school I went to, one guy started teaching me TKD. Then I met a man named Benji in Gloucester Mass that changed my life, instructing me in JKD, Kali and Wing Chun.
It centered me. Through meditations, helped to calm me and focus me. The workouts kept me in shape for my other love, long distance backpacking/nature photography. Which further aided me. Nothing like doing early morning exercises and meditations in a forest.
I have stayed with it. I am 63, still train every day. Got a home dojo in cellar. Been training my daughter. Teach some children self defense.
But I agree with alot of what you are teaching as Ive used it myself in various jobs like bouncer I have had.

I have just started to learn JKD at a Guru Dan Inosanto academy. I have no prior martial arts training, and I am hooked and fascinated by the JKD concept.
Looking forward to the journey ahead.

Sir, I really appreciate your way how you explained the great Bruce Lee's theory of JKD. I don't know how to express my feelings after watching your video. You are amazing, specially when you explained that martial arts is not only defense or attack, it is much more than it. It is an art to know one self, ourselves, which is superab. Thanks you so much and keep making such videos to play you part in the mission of keeping Bruce Lee alive.....

Good stuff. I've been watching your videos for quite a while and enjoyed alot of them. JKD is easy to understand. Not so easy in practice. I intercepted my opponents a bunch of times in sparring, but i still haven't mastered it. I need to work on confidence. Sometimes, i miss the signs my opponent is about to attack so i fail to intercept fast enough.

Great video I have studied different arts for years and love JKD. I am visually impaired and I can't rely on looking at the eyes, bu I can look at the areas from the shoulders to the hips and can see the intention, but it takes time to learn I do the best I can and always have done so, but the videos here in this series are great wish we had them years ago. Thank you Mr. Lok for presenting this in such a positive way and for motivating folks with no nonsense stuff that you get from others. I took a lot of time off from training and you are inspiring me to get back into it so many thanks.

My dad always used to tell me "Son, when you're through learning; you are through." Knowledge by itself is useless, though. It has to be assimilated, pondered and applied to have any practical value. Thanks for these great videos, a wealth of useful knowledge.

This is the most common thing i teach to my friends/students as it is the main core of JKD for me is to intercept as the opponent moves on you or make a attack mostly my first attack would be a hook kick or the roundhouse one depending the position and stance he is in, as for punching or tryna reach me with his hand i either do a step with the straight lead or if i dont have enough time to move then imma use the front jab with another cross jab or rear straight to his abdominals or his face

Martial Arts is more than just fighting something a lot don't understand.
I started in the US and in the military went overseas. There is a major fundamental difference when you learn whatever form of martial arts you are learning from the country that it actually originated from.
People that I had trained with in the US when I came back from overseas were amazed how much more advanced, and more powerful and precise I was than before I left.
They also noticed that I was more humble and willing to show and teach them what I had learned physically as well as mentally.
Martial Arts to me should be mandatory for young kids, because it teaches a lot of fundamental principles that a lot of kids are missing today.

HI Dan, I have watched the Ip man movies and was very impressed by the style. I have practiced San Soo for many years and love it. In the last several years I have been extremely lax in my practice. Watching your training videos have rekindled my desire to practice. Your instruction is simple and easy to follow, now it is up to me to practice to enhance my overall well being physical, emotional and spiritual. Thank you thank you so much.

Attacking (or in this case, intercepting) instead of defending when an enemy attack is coming in is a dangerous and risky move to do but is very rewarding and worth it once done properly.
The philosophies of this video you made are just enlightening. They helped me to open my mind in a way that I would not fight by just using limited type of techniques or traditional standards like you defend when someone attacks.
Martial arts for me is an art used to avoid fighting. Do not take the word "fighting" in this statement literally. The fighting I am trying to say is that the fight where you hate your enemy and fight him or her becuase of anger. Martial arts is kind of fighting (with good intention) to avoid a fight that has the opposite intention of the former.

    Lok Sifu,
It's worth noting that GM Lee's foundation was the Tai Chi he learned from his father. This enabled him, went he went into Wing Chun (another interior, soft art) to interact on a level of energy with his opponent, thus enabling heightened perception and anticipation.
Thank you for a very fine, ethical, series. Respect o\
