    I served in the U.S. Army with two Sikhs (with uniform exemptions similar to this Marine) in the late-'90s / early-'00s, one of which was my battalion commander for a while. Neither were Chaplin Corps. When I first met them, I was a bit confused, but I never had a problem with them. You mentioned it in the video, but I can confirm that the Sikh religion has a disciplined-warrior tradition that meshes well with U.S. military service.
    About the turban: they will swap to a helmet, if needed; they just keep a light cap over their hair (which is kind of bunched up on top), and the hair reputedly serves in lieu of a helmet pad. Asked about the gas mask thing, they stated if there is an actual NBC danger: "the beard will grow back, but until then, I'm keeping it."

      The facial hair restrictions are probably the only hair restrictions that actually make sense in today's day and age due to needing to get a tight seal on a gas mask.

    The problem is if everyone is there is going to be a breakdown of uniformity. The service is just that, a service, and sometimes your services are not required or needed due to certain aspects. Do i respect the Sikhs? Totally. Do I respect their history as warfighters? Undoubtly. BUT, and here's the big but, they are joining the US military, not the other way around. Example, if a Muslim (and NOTHING against them, just easiest example) went to work at a McDonalds and forced them to remove bacon from the menu because it doesn't go with their religion. They knew going in what this entails, and choices have to be made. I served for 22 years, and I had to conform to the style, not the other way around. Sometimes the service isn't for everyone due to various things. Is it vexing? Sure. Are some of the rules outdated and seemly with no purpose now of days? Totally agree. BUT if you've got leadership preaching from their soap box about uniformity and basic military standards in one hand, then allowing outside of "standards" in the other to certain people, discipline can break down and resentment allowed into the mix because you're holding one group to a certain set of rules, and another it's fine with. I believe that's where a lot of the animosity stems from.
    When you start giving exceptions to one group, you have to give exceptions to ALL groups. That's where the trouble will get out of hand. Do I think some of the requirements are silly now of day? Again yes, but when you hold one group of soldiers to one set of rules and another set to another that will lead to resentment.

    • @CJBryant21
      @CJBryant21 9 месяцев назад +2

      Very well said. I do agree with Eric and Chad but you made great points.
      Now here’s a question. What about the guys who get waivers for shaving because of say psoriasis? They knew before they enlisted that they can’t shave their face often enough to stay clean shaven? Should those exceptions not be allowed? What does @iraqveteran8888 think?

    • @Cosmo1093
      @Cosmo1093 9 месяцев назад +6

      The exceptions already exist for ALL groups. Active-duty Marines are already allowed wear religious headwear (turbans, kippahs, hijabs) as long as it fits underneath a helmet, or it must be removed when wearing a helmet is required. The only difference now is that recruits can wear articles of faith during boot camp too.
      Similarly, Christians and Catholics are allowed to wear crosses or even have a giant cross tattoo'd across their chest, as long as it doesn't interfere with wearing protective equipment like a plate carrier. That's been the standard: you can practice your faith, as long as it doesn't degrade your ability to fight or wear protective equipment.

    • @matthewlong9369
      @matthewlong9369 9 месяцев назад +6

      The argument about a Muslim banning pork at McDonalds is an entirely different situation. The Sikh is not trying to have the barracks cover banned across the Marine Corps. Furthermore, the USMC is not the dress blues corps, the uniform looks nice, but it isn't the reason for the Corps' existence. People are complaining about this being the start of a slippery slope, but the standard today is the same as it has always been: warfighting. If it doesn't make us a better warfighting force, it can be changed. If it makes us a worse warfighting force, it must be destroyed. If it makes us a better warfighting force, it should be kept. Whether we have one Sikh Marine or an entire battalion, those are US Marines who would otherwise not be there, and that improves warfighting.

    • @josephahner3031
      @josephahner3031 9 месяцев назад +6

      The British in over 150 years of allowing Sikh soldiers to wear their turbans never once had a discipline problem with them or any other soldiers stemming from their turbans or beards. Same with Scottish units and their kilts for over 300 years. Your argument, taken to its logical endpoint would have decorations, tabs, and rank insignia deleted from the uniform. These things reduce uniformity after all don't they? How about the Army's Service Cap? That's different, less uniformity, gotta go.

He told me that they were the fiercest warriors he had ever seen. Sikhs never cut any hair. It is out of respect for God that they wear the turbin. Their religion was started as a way to quell the Hindu-Muslim fighting in India.

    I don't really have an issue with a Sikh in the military. The greatest warriors in history had beards and tattoos. What I have an issue with is that our military is inherently weak. We're perceived as strong because we're an empire but the average American soldier compared to the average historical warriors of the Romans, Greeks, Medieval Europe or Vikings, it's not even a competition of physical and mental fitness.
    The fact we allow these degenerates and profligates to *RUN* our military let alone join is absolutely a disgrace.

    The Sikh guy dresses the same way every day of his life, he wears the turban to keep his long hair secure, as he cannot cut it for religious purposes and they are a warrior people, so it would be a liability in combat if it were loose. We don't have to worry about him doing his job, he will do it because they are strict followers of tradition and take their duties seriously, especially duties related to the military. I'm sure going up a helmet size would fit the turban as there's just hair in it and it will somewhat conform to the shape of the helmet and when in the field, he can wear OD green, multicam, or something like that, they wear many colors depending on the situation, so it doesn't have to be one color. A multicam turban would be pretty awesome looking. That being said, the military standard changes, and has changed over the years. The Marines didn't always wear the same stuff they do today. Back in the day, they wore tights and wigs and would consider what Marines wear today to be bizarre. So, what is a uniform code? Yes, it's dynamic, it changes with the times. The clothing is secure, it is not in the way, it isn't obstructing his vision or hearing, it can be changed to accommodate camouflage needs, gas attacks aren't happening, and the guy willingly wants to serve this country, so I don't see a problem with it.

So far as i can tell that would only include female Muslims and Jews, and Male Jews and sihks. The problem isn't the hats the problem is the guy who cant focus because of the hats. Yes actually the federalist system is based off the idea of having different perspectives sitting down to find the best solutions to a problem. That's why we call this country the United States of America, because we have 50 different states and all the different groups of people that comes along with that all hashing out the best solutions for the problems that America faces. Also, America annexed many different peoples and their lands into the modern United States. North America was diverse before the United States and will still be diverse if the United States can't get their act together and understand there is no such thing as a Melting Pot aka assimilationism, which leads to homogeneity or mass sameness. Sameness is not compatible with liberty and individuality and self-determination.

      @@joemo1033 I think we are talking about the same topic. That's why people call the Democrats and their Woke activists socialists while after WWII the US Government determined that traditional American values and the values of the Soviet Union were exact opposites. America is diverse because authoritarian governments hate actual diversity of thought, ideas, culture, and even ethnicity. Socialists are warmongers. There is no country on Earth more diverse than the USA because so many people migrate here from all over the world. America is the natural enemy of all dictatorships. When authoritarians press conformity and attack the US Constitution, they are trying to tear down liberty.
