    Ian was a handsome man, in his prime, and looked to be in good health, too. My own son went out to Colorado to meet up with his buddies back in June, to go on a golfing weekend with the boys. He said they were going to stay at a remote cabin in the mountains, owned by one of the men's wife's parent's. I remember warning him not to go out on a hike in the mountains there by himself. He smiled and told me he never would go for a hike out in the remote mountains of Colorado by himself, so don't worry mom! He said he has heard enough of the Missing 411, and unexplained disappearances in remote areas and National parks from me, to know the dangers of hiking alone in the wilderness! I hope that others will take notice and always go with a buddy. If you don't have a buddy, always wear a personal locator beacon device, or you will be the next to go MISSING. Is that what you want?

    Having lived, hunted, climbed, hiked in the Durango area, surrounding mountains, there are no shortages of ways to be eliminated. Bear are becoming very common in areas that previously they were not. Mountain Lions are far more common that before. Its a very dangerous place. Complacency by a experienced outdoors types is generally the cause of these incidents.

      Yup - We stayed at the Adventure Inn right there on the main strip - just a road trip to see fall color and get out of Moab... The night security guy happened to be there in the AM when we were checking out - and he showed me all the bear videos from their parking lot - Yes - RIGHT on the main busy 4-lane highway at night - you get families of bears that just casually roam around!! He has some SOLID high quality security camera footage of 'em... so I wouldn't even leave food in my car at night in that town!!

      @@bawattsyl I've been attempting to carry out the most drawn out binge watch as possible, im not in a hurry to run through your library, a meander is alright. You have made quite a few episodes though. I think that with your well researched base of each story & the way you talk about each individual allows the viewer to connect straight away to the fact that this is a real person & not some abstract concept. Real people & when they don't come home & cant be found the ripples begin emanating out from the moment of their disappearance.
      I commented on the Georgia case of Chris I believe it was, with the 3 coworkers & boot in the barbed wire & tools around. I took a slightly different tack from most people though by the odds it's far more likely that it would be his co-workers yet....I was in a hurry so it doesn't run as smoothly as it should but the bones of the theory are there.
      Again, well done on a strong body of work you've made & in the manner you present it, you have every right to feel proud of yourself.

      That's crazy! And actually that's my worst fear when hiking. I'm so glad you made it ok! But yes crossing a big river can be crazy dangerous. I actually was just donated an xr2 technical rescue helmet by MSA. It has a water rescue kit which are basically the panels on the side prevents water from getting in. They are made in France but I've talked about msa helmets on my channel before and will definitely do a review and go over the details once I have it. Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm very glad your dad was there and you now where more protective gear! Happy adventures! And take care🙏

      @bawattsyl  Год назад +2

      @@audibjornsson6107 yes! I agree and it took me a while to find one that was both light weight but had all the features I was looking for. Ultimately MSA decided to donate one to me. Which I'm so grateful for. I'll definitely do a review and show more info once I receive it. They are made in France so I should have it end of November or early December.
      I'm also working with an MSA rep to try and make these helmets easier to buy in America. Since they are based in France, they work with a network of dealers in the USA, however, it can be difficult for an individual to buy just one because the distributors like selling in bulk. I'm working to try and change that and make it easier for any one person to buy these helmets.. Thank you again for watching and your feedback🙏

    Sad to see a young man like Ian lost, but as it has been stated before on various other videos, due to all the variables of wild terrain, there are just too many possibilities. Even experienced hikers like Ian go missing. Dangerous terrain, wildlife, dangerous people, drowning, exposure, non-lethal injuries that still require assistance can all contribute. But after watching a number of these 'disappearance' videos, the most common factor seems to be HIKING ALONE. Taking a buddy might save your life.

    • @bawattsyl
      @bawattsyl  Год назад +2

      Yes it's very sad and like I've stated in some of my recounts of hiking experiences where I almost lost my life.. there definitely are so many possible variables. I do think one of the best things you can do of hiking alone is to carry a sat com Device. Well I should say, first learn how to use it and all the features because I've covered cases where the missing was carrying one but they hadn't even activated it. Almost all models these days have an sos button. But one thing I like about mine is it has built in topo maps, up to date weather, and route trackong.tracking. so if I got lost I wouldn't just walk in circles. This case like so many is a tragedy:( thank you for watching and your feedback🙏

  • @MYOB990

    Boaters use something called an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
    Seems like that would be a good idea for hikers.

    • @bawattsyl
      @bawattsyl  Год назад

      Actually that's very similar to an avalanche beacon and for hikers there are sat com devices that all usually have an sos button that when pressed will send a signal giving your exact coordinates.. the only issue with sat com devices, if you got lost in caverns or even Canyons, sometimes a signal might not go through. Thank you for the info and for watching!

    Sounds very much like 911 missing case.
    Doesn`t make a lot of sense, knew what he was doing, very good at it, found in water, even the reddish hair, I know that sounds crazy, about the hair thing, you`d be surprised.
    Found in a place that was searched more than one time, I hear what you said about their explanation for that...but when things don`t make a lot of sense, none of it really does, people often look for an easy solution, so everything fits nice in their life. Its very sad seemed like such a caring young man! Thanks for posting!

    Sometimes people get so immersed in their hiking, climbing, living in the wilderness, well, they just do not come back. They stay there forever. In a manner of saying. Kind of like the guy in Alaska that stayed in that bus and passed. He didn’t want his adventure to end.

    The body of Ian O’Brien, the 28-year-old runner who disappeared near Hesperus Mountain on June 24, was found Sept. 2 by two people fishing in a remote area in Echo Basin northeast of Mancos.
    Montezuma County Coroner George Deavers identified the body, which was found in the West Mancos River, as O’Brien’s in an autopsy performed Thursday. The cause of death was accidental drowning.

    It sounds like some kind of a bad fall that was, or became, fatal. These probable freak accident incidents maybe are the saddest stories of all, as the merest tweek of fate difference, the slightest bit of extra traction on a boot, or fingers and nothing would've happened.
    Experience level doesn't matter if a slip and fall ends in being knocked unconscious rolling down and ending up underwater and nobody else is there to see nor assist them.
    I've been on such remote trails. Weird things can happen in a flash. Very unfortunate.

    I've lost count of how many "wild life experts" have died venturing out alone. Is it so difficult to understand that the wilderness is not the city where if you have an accident people help you or call for help? you are alone and an accident, a fall, a distraction, an illness which in the city are solvable problems in the wilderness become lethal...not to mention predators
