The Farmer's Dog Founders' Story

  • Like so many other pet owners, Brett Podolsky was feeding his dog dry food from a bag, believing it was what dogs were supposed to eat. But his Rottweiler, Jada’s, severe and persistent digestive issues sent him on a journey through a maze of pet food products and marketing promises that led nowhere-until a vet recommended he try making simple, fresh food. That revelation about what healthy dog food actually is marked the start of Jada’s good health, the start of a company, and the start of a new chapter for the pet food industry.
    After seeing the impact of real food on his dog, and discovering the alarming reality behind pet food marketing, Brett and partner Jonathan Regev launched The Farmer’s Dog-the company they wished existed for their own dogs.
    Using decades of pet nutrition research, and working with top vet nutritionists, they created fresh, human-grade food that’s nutritionally complete and balanced for dogs, and delivered to people in precisely portioned packs.
    Millions of meals later, the journey to help all dogs live longer and healthier lives continues.
    See The Farmer’s Dog founders’ story above-and start your own fresh-food journey at www.thefarmersdog.com/.

    My boxer puppy was on farmers dog for close to two months. He definitely enjoyed it, but his poops were always runny and he wasn’t digesting it properly, as the carrots and other ingredients were coming out whole in his poop. Farmers dog also uses peas which I agree is fine in moderation, but larger breeds like boxers are more prone to developing heart problems from lentils. Lentils can lower taurine levels in dogs if they’re given as part of your dogs diet everyday which can cause DCM. Farmers dog is definitely a respectable brand that offers fresh food, but I would make sure you do your research for the requirements of your own dog first. Some dogs require healthy grains in their diet for extra energy, and some are more prone to developing heart problems. All dogs are different, so make sure you find what is right for your own dogs health. Just because one food works for your neighbors Labrador, doesn’t mean it will work well with your pit bull.

    We placed our first orders today, for our dogs Grace and Pearl.
    We thought we were feeding them well, but my husband tended to give them people food also, because he just didn’t like the appearance of dog kibble. Unfortunately, the excess food has made them heavy, and I finally convinced my husband that he needed to spend the money on Farmer’s Dog food that was prepared especially for each dog and their weight issues.
    This makes me incredibly happy, as I’ve been frustrated with the ‘love’ snacks and extra food my husband has given them, thinking it’s associated with love.
    Now, he can feel he’s spoiling them and they’ll return to a healthy weight and life.
    Thank you so much❤️

      Your sarcasm doesn’t go unnoticed.
      Omnivores, don’t look for gardens.
      They eat grasses, roots, wild berries and vegetables.
      Many wild, original variations of garden stock, grow OUTSIDE gardens.
      Until you understand what omnivores are, this interaction is a waste of my time.
      My husband has already commented how much better our dogs seem to be doing.
      Even our vet, has.

    • @hzuiel
      @hzuiel 12 дней назад

      @@61Christina1 Dogs are barely omnivores. Wild wolves are not obligate carnivores like most felines, but the vast majority of their diet and nearly all of their protein requirements come from prey, not plants. Domesticated dogs have some differences from wolves, they can synthesize some amino acids and proteins that wolves cannot, and have enzymes to digest some things wolves cannot, so they are more adaptable even than wolves(which are already pretty adaptable) but still the majority of their diet is naturally meat. just because while they can live off of other things does not mean it's not optimal nutritionally. That being said, processed kibbles usually have plant matter, sometimes quite a lot of it, and many many dogs live to be very old off of nothing but this kibble, the processing makes it easier to extract needed nutrition.
      Also your anecdote about how much better your dogs doing and how your vet things so means exactly jack shit, it's not a scientific analysis. You need data from thousands of animals which there are such studies done of foods produced by the bigger manufacturers. You're paying many times more money for it and you can't prove it's worth that extra, and meanwhile the actual farmers dog is a border collie that's 18 years old, has been eating ol' roy or kibbles n' bits it's entire life, and still chasing cars.
      "my husband tended to give them people food also, because he just didn’t like the appearance of dog kibble. Unfortunately, the excess food has made them heavy," This is a you problem, your perception, and your actions. It's the same as the people saying kibble made their dog fat because they haven't figured out how to measure just yet, a measuring cup is a novel concept to them.

    My wife and I started our pup on this food right away and she's grown up on nothing but this food. We used to order it from farmers dog but then my wife started ordering the make it yourself kit from farmers dog where they give you the recipe for your specific dogs nutrition needs and they send you the nutrient packets to make the same thing yourself. Cutting out the cost of them making it and shipping it saved us significantly on the cost. Now we just adjust it through the farmers dog website as she's grown so that it's meeting her nutrition needs. I've got to say, everyone who sees and pets this pup who's now 1 year old , can't help but mention how soft and healthy she looks and feels. You can see it in her eyes, skin, coat, ears, nose, etc. she's the picture of health and she's grown so well. We like to say that by giving her the gift of such good nutrition as she's grown through her most critical period of life, she's really reached her full genetic potential without anything holding her back or stressing her system out. It's true what they say too, you never realized what a healthy dogs poop looks like compared to the average kibble eating dog poop. You can really see the results of feeding this awesome food in more ways than you'd think and I'm sure we'll never ever feed a kibble food to our dogs ever again. Even the "best" kibble / bagged dog foods use such disgusting practices and ingredients, just look into it for yourself. To anyone reading this, you will never regret feeding your dog a good whole food like this and you will be buying yourself more time with them while reducing health problems and vet bills along the way. Alot of ppl don't realize you can select the option to cook the food yourself and save a good bit of money and this is very different than some unbalanced diy dog food you find online. I'm not affiliated with farmer's dog and don't get paid to endorse them in any way but I've seen this completely transform some of my older dogs and I've seen this make good significant noticeable difference in the way our most recent puppy has grown and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who is considering it. Whether you order it straight from Farmer's dog or you select the cook it yourself option, you will absolutely see the difference in your dog and you will feel good about blessing them with good real nutritional food over the garbage that we buy in bags.

She has gained 10 lbs. and she’s an active Vizsla. I don’t want to take chances of making it myself anymore, but I’m going back to fresh. I hope this is our answer. Others have followed but I have tried them all in search of what was best for my babies. I started with Farmer’s Dog and both I and my dogs loved it, following I tried the others that sound just as good and have a similar model, but at the end of all the trials, Farmer’s Dog won out. There was not any question. Many reasons, but I am happy to be associated with people and a company that keeps the care of my dogs as their most important mission. We know how difficult this time must be, and while we don’t currently offer specialty diets, all four of our recipes include plenty of fresh vegetables (and the anti-inflammatory polyphenols inside) which have been shown to slow, and in many cases prevent, the development of certain types of cancer. Additionally, our recipes have helped many dogs regain their appetite and enjoy mealtime again. Then last week we lost our dog, and I got it, not only everything you say above in your video, but also it's to teach us about death. It's cheaper (where I live at least) to make my own fresh food for my dog. Also as long as you talk with your vet about what foods your dog can and can't eat it is absolutely okay to feed your dogs scraps multiple times a day. Just don't over do it. Dogs evolved from wolves by eating our scraps and it is part of there biology to eat a lot of our foods. Dogs are able to eat foods that wolves get sick from because of that evolution. I can appreciate what you are doing but there are other (sometimes better) ways of doing the same thing.

    • @hzuiel
      @hzuiel 11 дней назад

      This food is by definition processed. How processed you consider it is subjective, because there's no real definition of what "slightly, moderately, or highly processed" even means. Some studies on humans show moderate benefits to eating "whole" food diets, with less processing, but why is less straight forward. Many foods are better for you, easier to digest, and higher in some harder to find nutrients, once cooked. Having a chemical or mechanical process extract a nutrient like say a healthy oil from a plant should be good for you right? You don't have to work as hard to digest and get the good thing. Yet you have raw food advocates that insist it kills your food to cook it. I tend to think diet is simpler than most people believe, and a lot of people are tricked by fads. In reality it's roughly eat less, move more, prioritize protein over fat, and fat over carbs, if you feel bad, food journal until you figure out what's causing it and stop eating that. The finer nuances are probably pretty unimportant if you maintain a healthy body weight and you don't have any outstanding issues to look into. Someone with uncommon dietary issues, auto immune or intolerance related, may have to make some modifications compared to the average person, but if you focus on those modifications you're less likely to get lost in the weeds.

    Why no grain in Farmer’s Dog? The evidence is mounting that there are heart conditions in dogs that are caused by a lack of grain in the dog’s food. I haven’t spoken to a single veterinarian that recommends a grain free diet. Even if you’re not sure lack of grain is the cause of these heart conditions, what’s the harm in adding grain in the case where the evidence confirms the problem? We feed our dog Farmer’s Dog but we also cook barley to add to his food to add the grain component. Farmer’s Dog bills itself as the complete package for your dog where nutrition and calories are set for your dog’s breed, age, and weight. Doesn’t my having to add grain upset that supposedly meticulous calculation? If you’re not going to put grain in Farmer’s Dog, tell us why.

    • @hzuiel
      @hzuiel 11 дней назад

      Dogs in the wild and wolves eat some plant matter, but almost never grain. How in the world could they have heard conditions CAUSED by not eating grain? By what mechanism would their heart be destroyed by the absence of something? Is there a vital nutrient only your heart needs, that's only present in grain? I can pretty much assure you that is not the case for dogs. Dogs have rampant heart disease primarily because of obesity caused by over feeding, and inactivity, just like humans. You also need to read a little harder, the FDA research is based on grain free dog food formulas that contain other ingredients in place of grains such as lentils. The pattern they were noticing of breeds not pre-disposed to a specific heart condition having a significant number of reports of the disease, could be caused by the presence of other ingredients, rather than absence of grains. There is no proof dogs absolutely need barely and literally millions of dogs and wolves, wild or domesticated, have lived and died and never touched, seen, or smelled a grain of barley.

This commercial and its ilk are the epitome of the worst of capitalism and everyone involved should be ashamed. I understand that all you intend to do is pull on the heartstrings of dog lovers and sell your commodity, but that we even live in a system that will divert resources to this project while human beings starve and die on this planet is a testament to how twisted the whole system has become. Processed food would be a godsend to millions of humans who would consent to eating it for the rest of their lives if it could be guaranteed to them. Most dogs could care less either. I expect that you turn off a lot of consumers who are capable of thinking about the logical tangential conclusions that can be reached by your emotional hard sell message.

      Maybe we should make this product available to human consumers at a discount...some people have to eat dog and cat food or whatever scraps the can get their hands on from dumpsters. I personally don't know how anyone can buy this stuff with a straight face while world human hunger prevails, and I really can't get behind this product. Of course non-processed food is better for animals..that's why we should focus on making it available for all. Maybe we should make a commercial about how humans should eat this food. Because homeless people certainly need this food. Maybe we could encourage rich people who can afford this commodity to adopt humans and share this resource that is being reserved for canines.
