- While taking a break along what is called the loneliest highway in America, what do we see chugging up the rail line next to it, but Nevada Northern Railway's steam locomotive #93. It was a beautiful sight to see and a lovely sound to hear. Julie had the camera and got a wave and an extra cool whistle from the engineer. It was a fun moment in time for us and will be a nice memory for the future.
Steam engine #93 was built in 1909 by the American Locomotive Co (ALCO). It's a 2-8-0 type steam engine built for the American Smelters Securities Co. and commissioned to haul ore on the Nevada Northern lines. It was sold in 1920 to Nevada Consolidated Copper, and in 1952, three of the four locomotives built by ALCO were scrapped. Old #93 was kept as a backup locomotive. In 1961, it was placed in a museum in Ely, where it remained for 29 years until it was traded along with other equipment to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum. In 1993, it found new life as an excursion train pulling passenger cars. Here is the wiki page if you're interested in more information. What a great story!

Merry Christmas to you, as well!👌
If we find ourselves experiencing another Carrington Event, these locomotives will be the only things able to operate. History will become a lifeline.
Haha, yes. Go ahead and knock the computers out of this locomotive. Thanks for the fun comment, Brian!👍😁
Congrats on hitting 23k subscribers!
Thank you very much. We appreciate it!👍
Two of the three favorites, Steam engines and Tom &Julie (3rd thing is mine exploring). On the 21st we are riding the steam polar express for my 19th AA birthday.

I remember when they used to use those old steam trains, you could see the smoke from miles away.
Hi Brian. It is an unmistakable sight to see the steam and smoke. Thanks for commenting!👍🚂
Those were the best of time Shame we won't ever see times like that ever again.
No, we won't see those days again. Thanks, Ronnie.🚂👍
Hello Julie and Tom. Lots of respect for those old Steam Locomotives. I think it's great that they keep them maintained and running.
It really is great that they keep this one running. Thanks for the comment, Stephen!🚂👍
@@TomandJulieMineExploring yes,... That was back in the '1990's, a short ride, but fun! I'm thankful for that train ride experience Tom and Julie.
I took a ride on that very train in the summer of last year with a friend, when we took a day trip to Ely to do precisely that! It hauled about 4 passenger cars, and lasted about 90 minutes. Great time!!
Hi Mark. That's great. Thanks for the trip report. Does it turn around somewhere?🚂
@@TomandJulieMineExploring Yes, it uses a "Y" junction to back down and turn around
Thanks for this video. I am a supporter of the Nevada Northern Railway.
Hello Tom hello Julie

Have a good weekend and a nice New week
Yours Frank Galetzka
Thanks, Tom and Julie, Love the steam engine. 👍
There is nothing better than hearing a steam locomotive working a grade. I've had the privilege of riding the Durango to Silverton narrow guage twice, and I'm planning another trip there. That sound, with the whistle, gives me goosebumps!!
Hi Lesley. I agree that it is the sound even more than the sight of a locomotive like this that hits you. Then he blew the whistle and wow. What a sound. Hope you get to ride the narrow guage in Durang again. Thanks for commenting!👍🚂
Oh I love the old steam locomotives... Big Boy 4014 Locomotive Union Pacific Is based in Cheyenne.
Thanks for the information on 4014, Max. Sounds awesome!👍🚂
So cool, I love seeing the old steam engines in operation. It should have been pulling cars with sightseers in them.
Hi Jake. I think normally it does. It might have been in for repairs recently and was on a test run.🚂👍
The reason for no cars is it's actually a Steam Rental for "Be the Engineer" program where you can run the engine up and down the line. You can run either light engine or with train.
Excellent Tom and Julie. I rode the same locomotive type up at Virginia City 😊 I love those trains, nothing like them.👍👌💯🇺🇸
Hi Dave. They are pretty cool to see and hear. Glad that you've had the chance to ride on one.👍😁
That is so cool my son was 3 or 4 years old and we went to Ely NV and road on one of them he is 15 years old no and we live in Wisconsin now at the time we went to Ely we lived in Las Vegas I lived in Las Vegas for most of my life 63 to 2011 that is way I ❤love watching your videos thank you both.
Hi Wendell. Thanks for sharing your Nevada back story. There are a lot of really cool places here in Nevada. Mines, towns, and apparently trains, too. Hope all is well in Wisconny. Stay warm!👍😊
In the right place at the right time! If I could have this running under the Christmas tree! I'm guessing operators are standing by. Merry Christmas Tom, Julie and all the fans!
Hi William. Yes, in the right place for this sighting. I think it takes passengers for rides. Check with the Ely, Nevada museum for more info. Merry Christmas to you, too!👍😊
Between the beautiful scenery, gorgeous day, and that magnificent locomotive, you created a great story.
Hi Heidi. We're glad that you enjoyed the video. That locomotive is really something to see and hear. Thank you for the nice comment!👍😊

I wonder how far they got before they realised all the passengers were still in the carriages at the station. 🚂
Haha, someone forgot the hitch pin. Thanks for watching!👍😁
Is this another sighting? Very cool to see either way👍👍
This is the same one as we put out previously. Thanks, Mark!🚂👍

wow, what a sight to see. how old do you think that is, and where was it headed.
Hi Tony. The locomotive is from 1909. I think it just runs out of Ely and returns, although I don't know for sure. Thanks for commenting!🚂
Tom did you used to work on this railroad? 😆 🤣
Haha, no. You might think that with the videos.😆
💯⭐️🇹🇷👍
Thanks, Metin!👍😊

Hey Eddie. It's cool that you have had some steam engine interaction while in Illinois. That whistle is really impressive to hear.
Mexico is good. Very hot and humid where we are. They really do a lot of celebrating here. Everything around town is all decked out for Christmas now. Julie says "hi".
Are you talking about forgetting how to use your looper?
Merry Christmas to you, brother!
@@TomandJulieMineExploring yeah I was talking about the looping machine. I wish I was in Mexico with you sounds like you're having a blasts. It's good to hear from you you guys keep it safe .
It's really hot and humid. We're finding a few things to do. There is a guy here that plays blues guitar that I know from Minnesota. We go see him on Tuesdays afternoons.
