I got this for a stray cat I wasn’t able to trap any other way in my backyard. It did have a few hiccups, but if you practice you can balance the trap right on the edge of the rod that retracts. Be sure to keep holding the remote trigger down. If you only quickly pull the trigger, it will only retract halfway. You have to keep pressure on the trigger to keep the rod pulling back to drop the trap. I was absolutely thrilled to get this poor guy inside with us!
I used one of these extensively for a few months. I had great success, and I retrapped eight cats that I had previously TNR'd, most of whom I'd trapped with my wooden drop trap.. One of the HOA board members agreed to move the cats out to his rural property. I could not get them with a regular drop trap setup, because if they even saw me at all, they would not approach the trap. I have a remote security camera that allows me to view the trap in the dark. With the wireless remote, I was able to set the drop trap up in total darkness and monitor it from the parking lot. It worked when nothing else would and I managed to get those cats. I had tried and failed numerous times before. Another situation arose where the caretaker wanted to relocate two cats. I made the mistake of springing the drop trap on the first cat, without waiting for the second to enter. After witnessing the trauma of seeing his compatriot being trapped and hauled off, that cat ignored my drop trap for hours time after time after time. Every time I would show up, he would just boogie. Finally, I got him hungry enough and I was far enough away that he felt good enough about it to go under the trap. I pressed the button and the servo made a noise before the trap closed. The cat bolted out of the trap and then it closed. I've never used it since. It's a shame because it's a useful (as well as pricey tool), but it's hard to beat the reliability and affordability of mason's twine.
Please remember that the back flap of the trap needs to be weighted down before trapping any cats. The video does not include this information and it is a crucial step in successfully drop trapping. If this step is missed, cats can easily escape from the trap if it is not weighted down.
This looks awesome, especially for the hard to trap feral cats! I just wish this wasn't so expensive! I volunteer with cat rescue where I foster and sometimes trap. I buy my own traps as do all of the volunteers. The trap, remote and accessories needed cost $260! It would be awesome if they gave discounts to nonprofit shelters, or if someone had a used model they would be willing to sell.
Unfortunately the rod on the receiver slips off too much from the welded rod propping up the trap when I try to use it. The moments I do get it to not slip the receiver won’t retract. This works well with single traps but just not reliable with drop traps.
Been testing cage with remote - issue right out of the box is that the metal trigger pen and the metal crossbar on the slider - because of the angle - the pen just slides off the cross bar because of the angle - the cage is just too steep a angle - anybody have this?
Yes! I ended up completely modifying an old one but the new one I have gives the same issue, slides right off. I’ve tried adjusting using the dial and nothing works
Does the hand-held remote trigger have to be in direct sight line with the trigger unit? You said "in your house or sitting in a car." Will the hand-held remote set the trigger outside a door from inside a house?
I've now switched to using a remote on the drop trap door. You need a different mounting bracket for the receiver, but tomahawk has one that you can order. You would place the whole drop trap on the ground and use the remote the close the door on the drop trap. That way it doesn't make as loud a sound and you don't have to worry about tails getting chopped off by the drop trap when it drops. The one thing you have to remember is when you put the door in to the drop trap, you have to put it in backwards so the curved top of the door is curving outwards, not inwards over the trap, because then it will get caught on the receiver. I will see if I can find the link to the video showing how it works.
Tried one of these today that is borrowed from a feral rescue- the trap is in great shape, but the 'safety' clip stops the trap from coming down all the way- this happened 3x in a row. We need the trap to work smoothly, and quickly without any hiccups. Tips?
Yep. Mine doesn’t work. And to try and get it just right the legs stop the trap from falling all the way or the pin that holds the leg prop slides. This video say apply the pin device to row three. Written instructions have it arrow 4

Yep...that happened to my son when he forgot. We got the cat a few weeks after, but my son will never forget again. LOL
Absolutely!
how do you best recommend to weigh down? WIth fishing weights or a bar of metal?

Would be nice to be able to see the top of the trap when you insert the rod

I used it on my porch and was in a upstairs bedroom. It has a good range
Unknown, but feel free to test it out before using it on different places to see how good it is!
A friend and I sat in my kitchen while waiting to cat a cat. Remote worked great.

I had the same issue!
Use the door only, do not drop the entire cage
