Why does a Vauxhall Zafira have DPF and engine management light issues?

  • In this video I address my Vauxhall Zafira showing the engine management light again and highlights that yet again it's a Diesel Particulate Filter DPF error due to error code P242F Powertrain particulate filter too clogged.
    In this video I show the issue, explain it and show you how to force a regeneration to try and clear it.
    You'll need Vaux-com software and the OBD interface, search ebay for that and you can order it then you can use it as I show.
    All modern diesel engines have a DPF and unfortunately if they don't get cleared then it will clog up and eventually need replacing as a great expense! Don't get caught out, take a look and see if this video helps you.
    Also, here is the UK Government information on dpf and why it's illegal to remove it:

    My car has this problem. I had no idea what the yellow car symbol was all about. Tried passive regeneration two times, but I guess this have to be the answer to the problem

    As this is an old video you may not see it. We have a Zafira B 2014, 1.7 D the 125bhp version. We have owned it for 8 years, 75% of its life was motorway use, even now although it does less miles, it does a 180 mile round trip at least once a month. But more short journeys. A few days ago the DPF light came on, I have never seen this illuminate previously, On our car the DPF light is the glow plug warning light. The EML light did not illuminate or did it go into limp home mode. I read the handbook and took it for a blast on the M4 at 2000-2500 rpm for around 10 miles. Following this the light was still on until I accidently stalled the car, on restart the light was off. The car only has covered 80k miles, not sure if its relevant, 2 days prior to this it had been in for MOT, it passed okay and a small service. Any advice, I can use it for its regular 180 mile round trip in a few days time.

      Did you ever find a solution for this?
      I have the same car with similar mileage, but same situation here. Car in for MOT etc and DPF light has now started flashing, never seen it before until now

    DPF technology would be brilliant if more research went into it....it should be able to regen on school run or going to corner shop

      That's my complaint with it really. But I do think the Vauxhall implementation on these A17DTJ engines is flawed, like you say why can't it cope doing a regen in town/city driving.
      Many other manufacturers manage it! Cheers for the comment Michael

      some DPF's have heating elements in them, but they are very few as far as I know.
      I didn't know that untill i was doing research in to DPF's. more DPF's should have them

    I had the same trouble with my Astra J. I didn't realise you live in Newcastle until I seen you leaving Silverlink I live around the corner from Silverlink

      Hey there, ah yes I was working up there the other week, you spotted my Zafira! Good to hear from another North-East person on here.
      Yes, the Astra has the same engine as the Zafira A17DTJ so same problems, etc, unfortunately. Bit of a blast along the A19 regularly helps.

    Hi buddy I see from one of your videos you have a connect head unit in your Vauxhall Zafira b 1.7 I have just the normal cd one is it straight forward to change it to the connect one . Or do you need to unmount with opcom first

    Andy, just interested if you dont mind, what year and milage does your Zafira have? Recently i could smell fuel and it might have happened on a 30 min journey. Recenltly i also inspected and cleaned my almost blocked EGR valve. Interestingly no codes just poor fuel milage (Service at main dealer was 5k miles ago and nothibg mentioned). Mine is 2014 zafira 1.7cdti. Thanks for video and info

      Hi Neil, mine is a 2011 1.7cdti A17DTJ engine. Mileage is low for the year 72,000 on it.
      Fuel smell could be egr, yes typically that won't generate a code. It could also be the fuel filter housing damaged or not on properly, one to check as it's easily done, I've covered videos on egr, fuel filter, etc so take a look at the rest of the channel.

    Hi,I bought 2010 vauxhall zafira 1.7 diesel from auction with blinking glow plug light,I thought I will take off dpf to clean but dpf is deleted,I find used dpf for 200£ on ebay and thinking to buy and install it.But I was thinking this car might has done remap... with op-com is possible to reset ecu to factory settings? Thank you for any info :)

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  6 месяцев назад

      Hi, if dpf has been removed but you've got flashing glow plug light it suggests they've not removed/mapped the ECU to clear it, probably why it's been dumped to auction!
      So I'd check the dpf pressure sensors first see if the wiring is damaged, cut, etc before buying. There isn't really a reset you can do with the ECU but get somebody to put a simple map on it

      @@junkendriven thank you so much for replay :) So if DPF is removed and all sensors is working propertly then I should not get flashing glow plug light ? Is it correct ?

    would you get smoke from under the bonnet as well as the rubber smell if it's going through the re gen. ?

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  2 года назад

      You shouldn't unless there is material on the engine being burnt off (Take the plastic cover off the top of the engine and check your injectors, etc, anything on the engine would be getting burnt off and may cause the smoke you've seen).
      You could also have a slight exhaust leak in the engine bay, so you want to check that out as you shouldn't get smoke from the bonnet.

    did you see the regen light glow at all while the car was forcing one

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  2 года назад +1

      I assume you're referring to the flashing glow-plug light? No, that light is for when the DPF is over-saturated beyond recovery and is at that point a failure of the DPF. It doesn't flash during a passive or active regen in any situation. (Also, that's why my other video for adding an LED to show when a regen is taking place helps out!)

    • @nathanreid2974
