    This is what ppl want. I've been skating constantly for three years and I'm at a point where your tips are making a huge difference and helping me to refine the things I've learned. I feel like I'm moving into say phase 4 of skating where you get to start approaching what type of skater you really want to be.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Год назад +4

      So happy to hear that. I remember making that jump myself. Low key wish I could go back, as it’s tougher to learn new things today.

    Bro…using my arms more for balance helped my skating by 100%!!! That comparison to balancing on a wire made so much sense. Thank u 🙏

    These Rookie Mistake videos have been some of the best skateboarding tutorial content I've had the pleasure of watching over the 2 years I've been skating.
    Your tips are immediately actionable and actually break down the mechanics you need to skateboard. Any other newer skaters probably know the feeling of a more experienced skateboarder, even with the best of intentions, giving you the most oversimplified tip thinking it will make it click for you, "you just need to jump higher", "just flick the board", "pop harder" which, while not incorrect, are not helpful at all.
    THIS kind of content is what's missing and what I needed instead of those generic tips. Thank you for these videos, they've really made me better over the last few weeks, and I look forward to more in the future!

    i realized this is part of the secret to manuals after watching some dan corrigan videos...once you get your legs/feet in balance position, don't move them - adjust balance with arms...

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Год назад

      Oh yeah. This is one of two massive keys to good manuals. The other is more difficult to explain.

    • @richardpeterjohnson5372
      @richardpeterjohnson5372 Год назад +1

      the way I've heard it that helped me is your arms are the fine adjustments and your legs are the broad adjustments. so the lower body comes in handy for saving a manual periodically, especially if there's something about the terrain that isn't nice and flat.

    Have you ever seen the way Tom Penny popped tricks in his prime? He did this mad "arm pumping" movement, first upwards like you recommend but as the knees suck towards his chest they circle round like he's trying to get his chest and knees as close as poss using that momentum. On 180 tricks he only does this with his back arm that becomes the leading arm on landing.
    Tyshawn does a kinda backwards swing with his arms that seems to push his head forward and his chest towards his knees.
    Use your arms!

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  2 месяца назад +1

      He was really whipping his arms, and “rolling down the windows,” as we used to call the arm rolling thing 😂

    lol post Covid I needed to lose weight skating huge 3 hour sessions with no rest I lost 15 lbs in a year and I usually NEVER sit unless I literally can’t walk . When I first arrive at the park I can’t stand not being on my board I get the camera going as quickly as possible!! I’ve built up my skating time because I learn so slow it takes me forever to learn tricks so I count it as a win for a workout because I do 3 hour wars with tricks without any makes, well there’s my cardio 😂 plus I got no friends do there’s no point in sitting , when your at street spots there’s always a bust risk last thing you wanna do is be sitting and then get booted , skate on!!

    These are great analogies! I'm already a pretty decent skater and know how important shoulder/arm movements are but the way you explained and compared it to tight rope and bowling pin was really nice. There are a lot of times where I fumble certain tricks because I'm not fully paying attention to what my arms are really doing.
    Front Smith for example... There are a lot of times when I'll lock in and come out nose diving, and after reviewing my own recordings I noticed that as soon as I get in to the grind my back arm swings vertical and over my head causing a lot of forward force. Another time my back arm stayed downward and I slipped out

  • @frankface7288

    My style is about all I have going for me lol. I think it came from rolling for miles over treacherous terrain heaved by ice, roots and snow plows (no skaters or videos to learn from at that time/location).
    Having learned only to push as a child I started up again at age 40 and only do grinds, slides, manuals, fly outs and such (I can't justify rolling ankles or smashing my tailbone at this stage). I get the compliment "smooth" time and again, I think my yoga practice, love of balancing and solid foundation pushing is a big factor in that.

    In my first year of skateboarding I practiced regularly not really making a whole lot of progress but still the passion to get better kept me going. But moving to my 2nd yr something just clicked and i was ollie things, confidence was better and i felt more comfortable telling ppl i skateboarded bc i could actually show them. My point is in your 20+ yrs of skateboarding did you experience this kind of growth as beginner?
    Im now moving to my 3rd yr this August and love doing rails.

    • @vancouverbill
      @vancouverbill Год назад

      Growth isn't linear (straight line) in life and skating. Sometimes it feels like you are not making any progress but as long as you keep trying you are consolidating what you have learned then you have a huge jump forwards. Can be frustrating when growth slows but just need to be patient and enjoy the process then all of a sudden have a big leap forwards. Sounds like you are on the right track

    I've been looking for insight into arm swing for a long time, this video is awesome!
    I've noticed for many years that skaters like p-rod, pj ladd, they swing their hands and arms behind them, almost until their arms are parallel with the ground. This is the opposite direction of what all exercise/squat jump form teaches. Comparing this to Chris Cole, he keeps his hands in front of his body the whole time, doing smaller loops with his arms like he's jumping rope almost. It's so weird to me that they're basically the complete opposite.
