I truly believe marriage can be wonderful, but it requires a lot of communication and effort. However, living with the husband's family is another big obstacle for a young couple to add to an already difficult situation. The key to a good marriage is listening to each other and being able to make concessions. Thank you!

After spending yesrs in a bad marriage, i can say growing old alone is better than growing old with someone that treats you poorly snd being unhappy. Theres a difference between "alone" and "lonely". I feel like a person with a fulfilling life may be alone, but not likely lonely.

Hell yes we want to be alone and love it. I am an Aunty of nearly 60 and love my life. I was married but it did not suit me. Now I have an amazing international life. I used to live in China. Now I live in Myanmar. I see young chinese women waking up and realizing it is ok to live their own lives.

Hey sister, I finished your HSK1 V3.0 a long time ago, I am waiting for your next HSK. kept going on.
I lived in China for many years as a native New Yorker. I learned to speak Mandarin Chinese to fluency. Therefore I was able to talk to local people about this issue. It is not an easy one to discuss because there are many pressures that women are burdened with in Chinese society, and there are many issues that Chinese men are burdened with. Because of this there can be a clash between men and woman on what they believe the marriage and family structure should look like there is still some residual old-fashioned male dominant ideas that permanent the culture and the women are pushing against it even with my in-laws, I see some of the fights that they have stem from leftover ideas from a highly male dominated culture. Also, the men have to pay a dowry which can amount to a lot of money, the men need to have a house, a car, and a good career in order to secure a decent marriage. Now these days with economic hardships, it is hard for men to have all these conditions in place before they are married.

Can you make a video on why Chinese boys are not getting married too. Because marriage is not just done by girls. I heard many Chinese boys are not getting married because of the high expectations of the society from men. Like needing to provide house, money and have a very good job. And be very good looking, tall and rich.

Even if the man does both the traditional mom and dad roles and allows the woman to spend all of her money on herself. The goalposts keep moving back.
@@SO-jp6gh Yes, bad women are like that. They are a big problem for the entire society. But I believe there are still a lot of good women who are not like those bad women. I have seen many very humble and innocent women who are very traditional and respectful. They truly love and care about their husbands a lot. They do jobs and supports her husband with expenses while also taking care of children and doing household chores. So humanity still has hope.

Hi Eileen! Thank you so much for all the hard work that you put into your videos. I just now found your channel and it's an absolute gold mine of listening practice content. I find it intriguing that nowadays, this issue isn't subjective to Chinese women, but for almost every racial/national demographic of women. I also have a feeling that in the coming years, we might see a rise of people marrying in their late 30's or early 40's, interracial marriages (because many people are finding it difficult to find a suitable partner in their country), or single elderly people. That's just my two cents. Great video btw!
I find it interesting that it seems like no matter the culture, better education and better jobs/income decrease marriage and birth rates for women. Like all of these issues that are being discussed were and are replicated here in America as well, just a few decades earlier.
Women definitely still feel stretched, having to be "super moms", women who work and also clean and cook and take care of the kids and husband, all while being independent and taking care of themselves to look attractive to society... It's just so much to ask from one human being.
Men like my self need to try harder to step up, despite the pressures we also feel in life. Great buoke (podcast)!

For people like me that want slightly slower video speed, but not 0.75x because it starts to introduce artifacts into the audio, you can use developer tools command console to target the video and slow it to a more granular speed of 0.8 or 0.9, using $('#video').playbackRate = 0.85 for example
She questioned the meaning of marriage so I'll give my answer. Marriage is indeed a way of locking yourself with someone, and that's what's beautiful about it. It's like saying "You can now tell me everything about yourself and I won't run away", and both have no choice but to actually know about each other deeply. In a casual relationship, you'll only ever see the surface level because one may be afraid to show their true self in order to avoid scaring the partner away. The point of marriage is to remove that barrier

I can understand but I don't share her opinion to not having children and not getting married.
I try to remain optimistic even after all the Ls. However, for the consequences of a aging society, she's desillusional, in my opinion :
No state will "fund" a zero baby policy, welfare will remain for couples. Single people will be always the more taxed.
Retirement insurance is a disillusion, save and live frugally when you are old. Same situation as old people nowadays (insurance companies are selling a product, don't be fool).
No one will take care of you... Do you think that other people's children are going. to take care of you ? Not for. very good pay especially when the labor force is rare... Or maybe immigration...
To conclude : don't be influence by other opinions especially if they want to sell you something.

These two characters are separate words, 对 means couple, 数 means number. So together, it means, the number of (married) couples.
人数 is number of people. 对数 is number of couples. Perhaps

I think there is an illusion of options for both men and women, though in different ways.
because of the internet, a woman might feel they can choose from any man in the world, when in reality they can only really choose from those in their social circle.
likewise, men might feel they can get the attention of many women, when that attention is in fact often at best only virtual and sometimes even artificial.

I am a foreigner and always wonder why my Chinese senior always says "Oh it's okay I'm not looking for a man to marry with" or something along the line with that. She even went overboard and said things like "Dating woman is also acceptable and even preferable!". Would be nice if you could dig down on this issue too.

Waiting for the knight in shining armor or Prince Charming is a delusional trap that many women find themselves. They aren’t willing to settle for less and if they do, they’re often quick to divorce because even if they figure out the perfect guy doesn’t exist, they’re still subconsciously thinking they deserve better. In addition, guys need to step it up and be their best selves. It takes a foundation of unrelenting hard work, patience, communication and despite each other’s character flaws: unconditional love. It seems that no one considers entering into a marriage on the basis that each partner will work and income and expenses pooled.
It's a great way of life and means that each partner can enjoy a far better lifestyle than would be possible it each of them were single.

I really really appreciate that. I'd like to make a suggestion though, because I don't think this could be qualified as intermediate chinese level... As far as i can tell, you guys speak with a high pace, providing a lot of details, using a somehow rich and developped vocabulary. Maybe you could figure out a way to divide the interview betweeen intermediate and advanced chinese ; for instance you could begin with intermediate level then raise up progressively the level of difficulty.
Great topic, it's not personal, I know there are limits to what be said but they make it sound like in China you do what you feel like doing. I think the society, parents and the government have lots of creative ways to pressure people before they get overwhelmed with too much choice and personal freedom

Is it me, or does Sharon speak more formally than some people? I'm somewhere on an intermediate level (I'm Taiwanese American who spoke a tiny bit of Mandarin, but later improved some when I married a Chinese woman) but I seem to have a harder time understanding her.
This is good for me at least, because it'll definitely help me improve more. Improvement is definitely needed because I feel my Chinese has gotten stagnant because after fifteen years of marriage my wife and I basically use all the same words.
Keep it up though, Eileen! These topics are interesting and relevant and are great for intermediate speakers like myself.

I though the analysis was superficial until Eileen shared her opinion at 6:13.. complaining about men is half the problem the other must be related to women.. if they are economically self sufficient perhaps their expectations to meet a man may rise beyond what’s realistic.. on the other hand women’s changed behavior, attitudes, etc may be very unattractive to what men look for in a woman..

My goal is to motivate people to learn how to speak with others properly and not be afraid of dating real person (unite people), but instead it seems like people would rather date an AI robot than a real person? While women are young, they can live and work comfortably for themselves, but after the age of 40-50 years, 99% of them admit that not starting a family on time was the biggest mistake in their life. It’s stupid to promote life for single women. Women and men are created to live in a family, and not alone. you just need to learn to coexist correctly and mutually beneficially.
10:10 in this case, saying “marriage is not necessary” would be a mistake. It would be correct to say “you need to approach marriage with a person carefully, in order to choose the right person", and not the one with whom you will break up after a few years, on your or his initiative. It is not necessary to marry immediately after coming of age, but you must definitely prepare for the right marriage with the right person, even if it will be 10-20 years in the future.

I judge by myself, by my surroundings, by my friends who live in Eastern Europe, Ireland, Canada, East Asia, and their experiences. Despite the good quality of life, everything is always stressful, you have to work hard and constantly save, and this does not improve even when you approach retirement age, plus physical weakness and chronic illnesses add to this. I don’t know what cases of happy, lonely old age you are talking about, but I would really like to know about these 0.1% of cases.

Pretty much after providing the house, paying the dowry, paying for the wedding and banquet, providing his salary for family expenses while the woman keeps her own salary to spend on herself, the man gets bossed around by those 3 women in his own house. If you see an east or south Asian man work late at the office, it’s often because work is the only place he can relax. when he goes home he has to bear the constant criticism from his east or south Asian wife who expects him to be perfect. Even if 19 of the 20 years he earned more and took care of the family expenses, that one year he was temporarily unemployed, his wife will endlessly torture him for that, even if he continued to pay the expenses during that one bad year.

I think we need to understand the first and principal reason why nature needed to create a man and woman and why there are physical and related mental dissimilarities, although we are the same species. As we are living more and more from the cerebral cortex only, so our thoughts are not completely grounded in the wholeness of nature. Before a woman starts looking for spirituality in a man she should start looking for spirituality in herself and understand why the creation needed to create men and women and should there be roles that would therefore be given to the specific genders based upon the source of creation; Why didn't the universal force create human beings or other species as unigender e.g. amoeba? what is the need to have men and women separately? It's true that social media has brought a lot of information to the surface, but this is information without roots. I personally feel that this uprooted information is causing chaos that is tending to grow into a knot that probably will need to have to be cut, like operations and we will then have to return to the roots.
I think that this trend has two outcomes: either technology will be so advanced so there will be no need in youth working force and creativity, and the society will be self-sufficient. Or the governments will somehow force the people to have children. For example by restricting all the goods and services only to married couples with children, contrary to what Sharon said. Otherwise economies will collapse. Will see.

if we think about what could happen later on (e.g. we might get a divorce) and make our decisions depending on how we anticipate things to end up for ourselves (e.g. we might be alone), well then we might as well suicide right now but that's where everything ends up. this kind of consequentialist, high-time preference thinking is not only unhealthy, but I rather think it's stupid.
Just found this argument has major flaw . When discussing marriage they talk about psychological needs but in the case of non marriage they just discuss the material things , what about psychological needs then no emotional exchange , growing old , parents dying and no kids literally no one’s there
