Yeah, good luck hunting in California. Every year they close public land during archery season because of fire danger. That includes BLM and National Forest. A ton of hunting pressure as a result on the few areas where there's access. It's even worse during rifle season. Imagine Eastern Ukraine with nicer trucks and nicer rifles. That's what opening weekend of rifle season is like here in California.

Maybe you should scout more and hike more than a mile from the road.

I agree with Tired American here in the comments, my experience where most of the hunting pressure is where the 4 x 4 access is if hunters can drive that’s where they’ll be if you got a walk a couple miles youll thin the herd quick

Let’s talk up the incredible bear hunting here in California! During Archery season there are bears everywhere. Color phase bears are more common than black bears in my years of hunting. They “close” the areas for fire danger but it really isn’t enforced. Plenty of people still went.

Just a reminder. Unlike most other states we DO NOT have a spring season. Bear here is concurrent with deer in the fall.

First year hunting in the state. First bear tag also. Would love any advice on the matter. It’s a dream animal for me

I wouldn’t recommend hunting during a closure even if they’re not “enforcing it” because you still have to report when you harvested your bear that may not look good lol

Gohunt I love y’all I wouldn’t have been able to draw any of the states I drew already if it wasn’t for y’all’s help. I love y’alls shop I get a lot of stuff from y’all. But I’ll say this your wrong about this being a great state to apply too maybe the deer possibly is what holds it as a great state for nonresidents but I don’t think so. For residents off course it’s great for y’all but any time a state only gives out 1 tag for elk & pronghorn no the state isn’t worth talking about.

You almost have better odds at pulling a winning SuperLotto tix than an elk tag.

So many bears. Hunted ca since I was a kid. Killed some nice blacktail. But the bears are a real problem. I see more bear than deer nowadays

Did you say anything about black bear hunting in CA? I'm a CA resident,. We go to WY for deer. Been thinking about going black bear hunting in CA this year though as the season is usually open almost to the end of the year. Thinking of going after getting back from WY, and after the CA deer hunters have gone home. Do you folks have any thoughts on late season in CA for black bear?

Do it! There's great bear opportunity here across the state and we just had a huge win and defeated the potential total ban on bear hunting here.

Medecino national forest, all the X zones, plumas national forest, literally everywhere there are more bears than you could shake a stick at. Take friends and fill some tags. We need to hit the quotas. We should petition to bring back hunting with hounds as well!

From California and hunt deer religiously. Put your boots away and make sure your truck is fueled up. Any over the counter tag available is a zone we’re you have to road hunt to kill deer. Some draw zone have less roads so you can get out and hike. But for the vast majority there is a fire road every 1/4 mile and if your not driving it someone else is. I have hiked 20 miles off a trail head only to find a four wheeler where I was going to camp.
