From what I've heard from readers of the book, David and Frida are less prominent in the books, but because they are soo popular in the show, they felt they needed to add them into movie and give them more of a role. They were great idea, but fell short on execution. I feel like the movie needed like 10 more minutes, just to bring everything to a close , but that's just me, I loved this movie.
I can vouch for that (bought all books) as they were super minor characters in the books!
Basically the scene when you think Johanna accept the two help to search for Hilda only to droved them back home and asked for Alhberg help instead would had deviated from the book plot! I get why she didn't accept their help thought (didn't want to endangered their lives).
I think they would go for as long as they can, but maybe they are short on budget? They did say that the budget making the show are pretty small comparing to other series, and the movie was originally 70 minutes before they asked Netflix for 16 additional minutes. Maybe that is why it fell short?
I don't think David and Frida are even in the book
@@koiby9303 They are in the book but they were minor characters at best.
@@koiby9303 yup, they only showed up as extremely minor roles in the comics.
Honestly, my reaction to the medal scene was just "That's bullshit! No wait, that's exactly how it would happen in real life"
SAME
Except that when something like that happens in the show (like, all season 2), it is framed as that, as something that unfortunaly happens in real life. Here it is framed as something good, cool, like a sort of redemption for him, while in any other instance it was just him getting the credits. While he was way more humble in here than in S2, he still didn't deserve to be rewarded, yet he was, and wasn't framed as that, it was framed as if he did deserve it
@@drosellie2850 I never got that impression that he was supposed to deserve it. The good bit was him retiring and a much more reasonable and competent character taking his place. Him doing it after receiving a medal he didn't deserve was just proof that one moment of realisation hadn't actually changed him.
Lmao same
Yeah. When self-centered people have the power, this is the best you can get. It really seemed to fit with Hilda being an incredibly well grounded and realistic show within its setting.
(kinda reminded me of real life here in Australia a few months ago where one of our state leaders and their deputy retired to spend time with family after a successful career and such things. A lot of the media clapped them off stage. Also she happened to be under heavy scrutiny in a large corruption case at the time, and had done a lot of other stuff I disagreed with too. Sorry for the politics.)
I haven't read the comics, but it was my understanding that Erik Ahlberg only appears in Hilda and the Mountain King, with all his appearances in season 2 being invented for the cartoon. He was impulsive and short-sighted, but he was trying to protect the city. The cartoon made him a glory hound. He had met Joanna in the mountains and was the one who told her not to eat those berries, a job given to some random member of the safety patrol since they've already met at this point. The metal might very well be a hold over from that.
I can understand him quitting when it was good. He wanted his name to go down in the history books and he had gotten his metal and glory at a point in time that marks a change in Trolberg and might just be self aware enough to understand that he would screw it up if he sticks around any longer.
Yeah, the way I took the medal scene was that he has just enough self awareness to realise how close he came to causing a disaster, but he's still a dick who wants all the credit and if him getting to retire as a hero will get him out the way then let him.
@@wendyheatherwood You ether die a hero or live to become a villain.
I like that he was visibly shaken when he saw the Mountain King's vision in the movie, like instead of just being surprised or scared he gets emotional and says "mother" like he loves his mom much like Hilda or she might have already passed.
I honestly liked that they introduced him in season 2 first before the movie, I swear there’s so many films I’ve seen based on shows that introduce a new villain in the movie and either have that villain get killed off, get defeated and disappear for the rest of the series, or become a recurring character afterwards (Recurring villains aren’t as bad as the previous two since they actually have a purpose even when their main story is over, yet there’s still a problem I have with them)
The main problem I have with these types of villains is that the movie either never gives them a fully fleshed out character, either because there wasn’t enough opportunities to explore it in the movie or they don’t explore it at all because it will take up too much time, the fact that we already know what kind of character Ahlberg is because season 2 explored on it a little means that it gives more opportunities for other characters to make appearances, like how David and Frida are actually way less prominent in the books than the actual show but they were able to include them as many of the characters had already been explored, so there wasn’t any sort of problems with character development and inclusion, Ahlberg’s first scene in the movie is so casual and takes up so little time cause we already know who he is, so we never have to think about him so much during the movie as it may distract us from some important scenes
To be fair to the writers, in the comic, this was kind of Hilda and her mother's show. David and Frida aren't even in the story, let alone a major part of it. They did well to work them in as is.
ahhh i see no wonder, they want to expand Frida to be witch apperantice... i dont know where it's gonna go with that storyline....
9:20 Swallowing his pride and admitting he made a mistake by resigning is big for a character like that. It was an eyeroll moment for me, like "ok, sure, good for him" but in a funny "goodbye, good riddance" kind of way that felt more appropriately "Hilda" then some sort of karmic death.
I would’ve had it no other way
Wait didn’t he turn into a bug.
@@Fairygirl-q6g he turned back to human lol
While I saw the Russian dude being the mountain king from a mile away, I still can’t believe he was also plankton from spongebob the entire time.

I saw it from a mile away, it seemed really obvious to me.

@@SarcasticChorus suddenly his appearance makes even more sense, we are looing at a giant galldang plankton.
@@SarcasticChorus tooketh the words from my mouth
Also as some people in the comment already mention, Frida and David stuff felt like filler cos it was filler! Those two were super minor in the books as the book itself felt like an abridge version to the show (the show really expanded the book by ten folds)! Like Alfur never accompied Hilda to Trollberg either and he's one of my FAV!
3:30 I'll defend that. Even with "life as a troll", we see variety, between them out camping at night, the diamond bell cave, the forgotten troll king's castle and his Smaug-tier hoard, all the different troll groups and their quirks like their unique hoards, all while comparing/contrasting that with the more familiar autumns on the surface as we follow Hilda's family/friends. I never got the impression of the "troll side" being dull.
Yes I think it even helps to contest the troll’s space w the human’s
Yeah
I agree actually! I was more so shocked when I heard about there even being a Troll King to begin with. While I do have some issues with the Mother Troll not entirely understanding that it was wrong to take a child from their mother, I really enjoyed the trolls!
Maybe its cause I play a lot of Monster Hunter but I really liked seeing all of that, it felt like a very simple and free existence when you know where to find such happiness.
This made me remember something that someone said, “If I had a nickel every time a protagonist turns into a troll, I would have 2 nickels, it’s not much but it’s weird that happened twice”
You forgot to mention on a Netflix show with 3 seasons
whats the other show?
@@mataharii161 Kinda spoilers of the series but its Trollhunters
Yesss I love both these shows so much!!
Hilda and Troll Hunters.
Technecally 3 Below, too because it takes place in the same universe, and he's a protagonist. But it doesn't show him as a troll, and actually barely shows any trolls at all.
The issue with the side characters could have been easily solved by making this into a season and not a movie. Given how long is the movie, the main plot would have taken roughly 3/4 episodes, but since they wanted to put in side stories, they could have got 3-4 more episode to make a complete season of some sort.
For the Ahlberg situation, I think he gets the medal not cause he deserves it, but cause the people of the city don't know the full story and just think he did good at the right moment...that's my take, at the end of the day he was never really exposed (at least they don't show it nor tell it to us ,if he was) and therefore people believe in him.
I think the issue that Sarcastic Chorus has with the medal is less with the "Watsonian" explanation, and more with the "Doylistic" side of things.
Yes, in-universe, he getting a medal makes sense.
However, when we are talking about the show's message and themes... It is a bit weird. In most shows, especially on children's shows and stories with uplifting messages, it is expected that the villains will get some sort of karmic ending in proportion to the harm they've done. (Or tried to do). Well, either that, or they go through some sort of redemption arc, in which they realise their mistakes and have to suffer the consequences before coming back on top (or they die in a heroic sacrifice.)
But Ahlberg... He neither goes through a real redemption arc nor does he get any karmic retribution. Instead, after acting the whole season like a fearmongering gloryhog, he gets exactly what he wanted, and is lauded as a hero.
Which isn't unrealistic. Ahlberg accepting the medal before stepping down is very much in-character, and it kinda fits with the show's tone. (This is far from the most messed up thing to happen in this series) But still... It is a bit of an unusual writing choice. ^^;
Thing is people are too fucused on Ahlberg gets his just deserts- a jerk to be punished. But look at him. He's a glory hound, chasing the need for validation- to prove something to his ancestors. He spends all his time manipulating, antagonizing, doing whatever it takes because he feels that's the only route to glory- and he's just always out of reach of it.
But what actually gets him the medal? Yielding to empathy. Ahlberg's obsession with the medal is as much the means he thinks justifies it as the symbolic reward itself. In a fell moment of empathy he claims his prize in a way that contradicted all his previous reasoning- and he responds by yielding this pillar he built his entire being around: his command.
Ahlberg gets a lesson- what he doesn't get is a spanking: a penalty or punishment where everyone points and recognizes it. Oh how we do love seeing our bad guys shamed- and doling retribution.
But Hilda continually shows how she's focused on righting things, and not retaliation against the villains. They're resisted, but not revenged. Antagonists are faced- and oft the only characters that know the truth are the them and the children. Like the cloud stealing Meteorologist. Hell the Christmassy Krampus episode- the whole point is the wicked kids punishment just escalates everyone's suffering.
That's what I love about this show. It doesn't feed us that cheap untruth that hurting the bad people solves the problem- nor does it sugar coat the sour and bitter pill that righting something doesn't retroactively fix all the pain and loss.
Or, you could stop being so starved for all media to be literally propaganda, that you consider it a flaw when it's not. The fact that life goes on separate from the focus you wish to call "the plot", should be and IS part of every story. It's just more show, don't tell: you could TELL a person is injured by having them wail about how they are injured, or by showing it. But even further, you can SHOW how a person's life, their family, hometown, moves on as she herself is not present, or you can TELL yourself a big handwave of "I guess they've just got their own shit to deal with".
If you're out "adventuring", how worried your family is, IS part of your "adventure". It should be as obvious as taking a dip and getting wet for it, and these side stories are a way of showing it.
@@sboinkthelegday3892 Wait, did you reply to the right post, or was it a mistake?
@@nathanlittle6628 this is the point✨
Ive been watching this show since it first premiered in 2017 and honestly beside being INCREDIBLY made the story and character are just very dear to me :) thanks for making this video :D
I disagree about aulburg. The vision was clarity to him. Having a vision of his mother calling him. He understood what the trolls are and what he was doing. "Stand down" kinda hit me hard as he saw that his fear mongering was literally keeping a bunch of kids away from their mother. Considering a major theme in both the Hilda movie and show is empathy, I thought it fitting for empathy to be the reason aulburg would realize his glory seeking actions were wrong and the reason for him to stop.
Also Looking at his face getting his medal and taking his hat off. Strikes me as more of a look of uneasy shame. He knows what we the viewer know, he doesn't deserve that medal. But he's too high up the towns leadership to convict after all in the eyes of quite a few people, the safety patrol saved the town.
Hilda has always been surprisingly nuanced for a show aimed primarily at children. No character is simply a force of good or bad Aulberg was no exception. He's frustrating, but he's an example of the sort of arrogant grifter we'd expect from a world like this. Coming from a long line of troll hunters, seeking a way to live up to his family legacy while trying desperately to keep the world simple. Humans good, trolls bad.
Hell, before season 2's ending I thought trolls were closer to bears than people. And the show treated them as such. Territorial, yet not inherantly "evil". They struck me more as part of the magical nature rather than a culture with music, games, social structures and community.
That was me as a viewer who saw hildas interactions with them. Nevermind if I hated magical beings like the average citizen of trollberg, let alone aulburg.
Agreed
A fine analysis of Aulburg. Well done.
One thing I remember from S2, was when Hilda asked the Rat King to get Aulbergs secrets, and remember what they said?
They found nothing.
The reason Aulberg was such a glory hound was because he hadn't accomplished anything on his life despite being a descendent of the revered troll killer.
He of course tried to do that by getting rid of the troll menace, Hilda's intervention was what let him see the Trolls as something beyond his success
I’m kinda sad that the bell ringer guy didn’t make an appearance, especially after Hilda brought up whether trolls have fathers or not. I really wanted him to play a part in it so much but he’s just not there.
Who?
The Bell keeper
And also there wasn't Woodman :(
@@Zeynep-mt2hq I JUST REALIZED THAT
I find it funny he calls David and frida hilda’s sidekicks. They put so much effort into making these two valid additions to the show to the point they have frida learning magic with hilda as her familiar(basically animal sidekick). Even with all that these two still aren’t as compelling as hilda. They’re good characters but they do suffer when hilda isn’t around and this film shows that better than any other episode.
I loved this movie, the stakes were raised, the characters were in actual danger and we got a legitimate reason why trolls keep fucking with the town. We also understand why the trolls got so and when bells are being chimed. I'm glad the side characters were there as it wouldn't felt like Hilda without them but David's arch in the movie was shafted.
@@danjoredd I disagree w u, he was kinda anoying the fiesta season but he gained more confidence and trust in his friends, to reach a point where he offered, a troll some food and stand our for his ideals w her mom
My reaction the medal scene was “REALLY….are you kidding me……*he then immediately retires* oh well at least he did that”.
When my friends and I were watching this masterpiece of a movie it devolved Into us shouting amogus every time the glowing eye was on screen I may have just ruined it for you but that is a risk I am willing to toame
You just absolutely ruined trundle's design for me
ah yes, ive found my people
“Various creatures in Scandinavian folklore, hot librarian” caught me off guard lmao
You'd think they'd have some grand backstory segment about Erik Ahlberg, if the audience was supposed to believe he'd suddenly chance his mind after his weird need to rile trolls up for fame.
Even one line like "...Mother? Where are you!? It's me, Erik, remember? I'll soon be as great as my ancestor, You don't have to protect me anymore" before being attacked by the illusion trolls and seeing his mother would make his actions way more understandable. A guy who was probably ridiculed for not being like his ancestor, protected only by his dear mother.
I just assumed he changed his mind after overwhelming evidence that Hilda spoke the truth, sort of like (for the sake of argument) if an Atheist was faced with undeniable proof of a god.
Now granted one could argue even then Ahlberg may have been protrayed as too prideful to even make that concession if he felt looking competent to the townsfolk overrode not getting the town destroyed, but I read it as he knew the town would definitely get destroyed if he continued, so really there was only one option left, even if it wasn't his preferred one.
Hard agree he didn't deserve a medal though.
@@gregvs.theworld451 I felt that Ahlberg's change of heart was prety well done. When he orders his troops to stand down he appears completely defeated. He knows now that he has lost, his attempt at glory seeking has led to catastrophe and the only way to salvage the situation now is to make peace. And Ahlberg is nothing if not an expert at salvaging bad situations he got himself into.
As for the medal, he is precisely the sort of person that would go for it, and most of the city would have no reason to think he was anything less than a selfless hero that faught to defend the city and made peace when he had to. Without the context we as the audience have, he would seem prety heroic. I guess the lesson here is that people dont get what they deserve, and maybe that dosnt really matter in the end.
It's weird, Frida and David looked like they were set up to have a body swap sub plot. When their spell to switch Hilda and Baba backfired the scene made sure to show us that they each were splashed by a separate bucket of water. It definitely looked like a scraped plot line that just got reworked into showing that Hilda was safe.
Season 3 in my opinion could possibly be a victory lap season if it's truely the final one.
Follow up on characters we've met. See some of the Troll-Human relations... the positive, the negative, and the shaky.
Maybe explore the backstory of Hilda's father, or grandfather.
Maybe touch upon whatever the heck the Giants were concerned about. (I'm guessing Giant sized Aliens)
All the problems, that you’ve mentioned, like sidekicks having nothing to do, are in the movie, because of all the stuff that have been added in the show. There are no Frida and David in the book. Albert is another character completely (and he actually wasn’t awarded in the book, that scene is only in the movie). In the books the brother of the mountain king plays bigger role, cause he is the one to explain the story of troll’s mother.
The colours in the comic are really interesting in my opinion, cause the main palette is not dark blue during the troll attack, but red, and this is more appealing visually.
So yeah, the book is brilliant! Highly suggest you reading it, as well as the whole series (the movie is just good in my opinion, a lot of things are holding it back sadly)
I wish there was more woodman in the movie. I forgot his name
his name is Woodman
BarkBoy
his name is literally wood man so you got it right and I don't care that this a year late
Slightly off-topic theory- He is always rude to everyone because he got called Wood Man so much he forgot his real name, and like Sigurd (Revival guy from the Eternal Warriors), "You wouldn't like it if i called you Flesh Girl". Wood Man doesn't like it, but he's forgotten what else to call himself.
I find it interesting that Hilda seems to still have her troll powers after turning back human and I really want to see what they do with that

The biggest red flag for the mountain king was him telling Hilda to keep what they were doing a secret.
What I would have changed in the film's story: Trundle's brother was the Mountain King and wanted to live in harmony, but Trundle rose up against him because he wanted to attack Trollberg. Trundle was able to gather enough trolls to his side and the brothers fought, leading to the war that crippled troll society.
This set-up is pretty classic and kinda cliche, I admit it, but it would've given Trundle's brother a lot more character and the movie could've given him more screentime while sacrificing some parts of the movie that were there just for padding. Could've cut out the subplot about David and his mom, since I also feel frustrated that it didn't go anywhere and had no pay-off. Though I don't know how the story was in the graphic novels and how faithfully the movie followed it.
I love Trundle's brother's design, I just wish we could've learned more about him. And maybe we do in the season 3, if there really will be one. Maybe he will actually become the new Mountain King.
Honestly I love Hilda so much, and I’m so happy my siblings get to grow up with it as their childhood show
Omg the part where you said it looks good on your monitor, this is so true! When watching the series, I said to my friends that you could make almost any frame your background. They're all wonderfully eye pleasing
I think it feels like real life. A guy is wrong but still gets rewarded. its like commentary.
Trundle's first request may seem insignificant compared to the other two, but it is not just for earning Hilda's trust it's also to regain his strength.(troll mead seems to be an energy drink with the way it was described)
You really help me to be more critical of the media I adore, which sounds like a bad thing, but I love that. Most of these things are things I felt but never really took the time to explore and understand why I felt that way. Its really nice
After the reveal of the Mother Troll I immediately went “So this is Attack on Titan.” Titans drawn to the walls because of the source/Founding Titan, the mother of titans. Trolls drawn to Trollberg because of the mother of all trolls. The Mountain King tearing down the wall, colossal Titan kicking in the wall. Standing menacingly outside with a lineup of trolls, like Zeke doing the same thing with his titans in season 3. Mother troll rising from underground to destroy the city, Eren’s season 4 plan that had him turn Titan underneath all the nobleman and high ranking military members of Marley. I’m not wrong.
@@Zee-nd6hc Does this make Hilda a Trollshifter?
Well thanks for spoiling Attack on Titan...
I get what you're saying, but at the same time I feel like if certain elements _were_ entirely left out, I would've been going "hey, why isn't X trying to do anything?"
8:18 and on that note, if we _did_ still have lingering Hilda/mom issues, then this plot point probably _would have_ been used and I think the movie would've been lesser for it, so I do think the criticisms cancel each other out.
The mother's spell was so heartbreaking to me. She just wanted her child safe, saw there was a human that could handle trolls without the need of weapons... it honestly reminded me of the mothers that sent their kids off into the safehavens during WWII. The ultimate choice, and the ultimate sacrifice.
And I honestly would've been fine if Hilda wanted to stay a troll, to really emphasize that the mother troll did the right thing in her own eyes, and seeing her heartbroken so early on really was emotional...BUT! having Hilda want to be a human again was a nice decision. Good trope break right there.
Also, I was wondering why the trolls were only rocks!! I've always known them as having grass/leaves/flowers/etc. on them, so seeing them get the Troll Mother's touch being the reason for their bloom was really beautiful.
This just really makes me want to get more into Scandinavian folklore, and pull a ton of inspiration of these wonderful creatures into my d&d campaigns.
Really awesome to see these become more mainstream.
The mother troll wanted the baby troll to be closer with the giant mother
@@skips_51 She knew nothing about the Troll mother, she wanted Baba to grow in a more peaceful environment given that within the Trolls, strength is something that gets valued, and a peaceful soul like Baba would not thrive in there
I would have been very upset if they decided to keep Hilda a troll. I have a similar relationship with my mother like Hilda does Joann (idk how to spell her name) and I know I sure as hell wouldnt want to stay a troll, I would’ve liked to stay in the comfort of my home with the woman who gave birth to me
For scandinavian folklore I recomend Vaesen by Johan Egerkrans. It is magnificently illustrated and reading it is a wonderfully immersive experience.
I think they kinda HAD to do something with Erik. One of the people working on the show mentioned on reddit that the movie was written with a solid closed ending, because at the time a season 3 wasn't greenlit yet. They wrote the ending to be closed because they felt that an open ending wouldn't be satisfying for viewers if the movie was going to be the last piece of hilda.
So if i had to guess, Erik stopped being a villain at the end of the movie because it would be an open ending if he stayed in power (this is speculation tho)
This is one of the best animated shows Netflix has ever put out. I've never seen She-Ra, so to me, this is second only to Arcane, followed by Dragon King
Edit: dragon prince. Not king.
You should watch she ra. Season one is alright, but every season after that gets better than better.

Guess what? Season 3 dropped, can't wait for his review on it!
No matter what, this is the channel I go for reviews and opinions. And honestly your voice is so calming and nice to listen too. I’d choose you over any other to listen too.
The part where that red-eyed guy asks for small stuff, then bigger stuff? That's an actual thing I learned about in Psychology. Foot-in-the-door. If you ask for small things first, then gradually bigger things(which he did in that exact order: cup of mead, take the bells off, heave my giant eye back here), people are more likely to do it for you.
I enjoyed the movie, even though the Frida and David subplot seemed unnecessary. Also I'm glad Ahlburg got the medal as long as he quit his job. I absolutely hate him. Gerda got the job she deserved and I hope we see more of her in season three!
Also I need a Baba. She's so cute!
I feel it struggles with
1. Being a season finale
2. Being a direct adaptation of a book
Mountain King had to juggle too much
My biggest concern we won't have Ahlberg as a malicious force in the show, and it could get a bit boring without his dumb ideas that threaten everyone.
I know Hilda is a malicious force that has the ability to attract any event that can cause the end of the town/world...and she is doing it for dumb reasons... ?
Oh my god Hilda is Ahlberg confirmed.
Hilda isn't malicious. She's thrown herself into mortal danger on other people's behalves repeatedly, and has even saved the town a few times when she didn't need to stick her neck out. She's impetuous, overconfident, and frankly arrogant at times, but there's no denying her heart is in the right place. If Hilda didn't actively seek out every possible source of danger within 50 miles, Trollberg wouldn't even still be on the map. She and her friends are a magical police force in miniature.
Yeah with Ahlberg gone and All of the trolls good now, there's no good antagonistic force.
They did the same thing in the first season by making the menacing and threatening Black Dog just a big stupid puppy. Massive let down. -___-
@@MRDLT00 we already saw that a lot of the people in trollberg still aren't happy with trolls being around, and that some trolls aren't very fond of humans. Im sure we'll see a bit more about Troll-Human relations before the show introduces another big bad.
Remember that in Season 1, there was no 'big bad'. The closest we got to it was Victoria Van Gale and the Hound; the former was a setting-threatening menace who needed to be stopped, but was neutralised in one episode, and the hound turned out to just be misunderstood. Hilda as a show isn't predicated around large, series-spanning conflicts. Its charm for me at least is more in exploring its setting and the troubles and quirks of the population therein.
That said, I would like to see Hilda confront another real villain like Trundle before the series' end, if only to see what our scrappy little protagonist and her friends can do when backed into a corner. I'd like to see all the lessons Hilda has learned; about honesty, about *grounded* trust in others, and about thinking things through and making plans like Frida does while still maintaining all the strengths we've seen from her throughout the series; her outstanding bravery, initiative, silver-tongue, and her most important trait, her ability to empathise and instantly connect with others regardless of their background and circumstances.
She doesn't have to be perfect about it (that would make her a mary sue) but if she just shows some signs of learning a little from her mistakes; being honest and forthright with her mum or with another adult at one critical moment which saves the day, drawing back from a bad decision because she realises it doesn't feel right, applying a moment of critical thinking before trusting someone she doesn't know; if Hilda can show that she has grown, if not to lose her flaws, then at least come to terms with them by the end of the third season, then the show can close on a truly high note. Having a truly formidable villain that Hilda *still* overcomes through help from her friends and through everything she's learned would be a powerful sendoff for that.
@@bookworm4133 Nor should the humans be happy since trolls will straight up steal their children and dump troll babies on them to raise as this series has shown us like with what happened to Hilda. And those trolls will not apologize or stop doing it! XD
I hope for you to reach 1 Million subs since your videos are hilarious as hell!
I'm just glad we got to see Kaisa, even if it was only for a moment.
Hilda and The Mountain King is a banger movie. Love that it connects nicely from were season 2 left off as well as concluding the Troll storyline from the first two seasons.
I hope there's gonna be a season 3. There are quite a few things left unexplained, like how they left a passing mention of a giant beast in the episode about the weather spirits. It may have been the black hound in the episode a little later, but it sounded like it was bigger than just a family-freindly SCP-023.
I was planning to watch Hilda for quite some time, and finally recovering from Covid, I got the time and binged both seasons and movie in last few days. And in one of rare cases where my expectations were not only met, but far exceeded. What a amazing, beautiful show!
And just like that, everything in Trollburg changed.
At that terrible moment, in our hearts, Hilda and her friends knew.
Home was a pen. Humanity, cattle
Attack on Trolls
Honestly, I feel like, with how the show's going, I wouldn't have been surprised if the show pulled a "Bill Cipher" up his sleeve and made the Two headed troll become the new Mountain King. You know, the guy that was the closest thing to an overarching villain in the first season before Ahlberg became a thing? And that supposedly died in the last episode of the second season?
PLEASE TALK ABOUT SEASON 3
9:47 i think realizing when you fucked up and doing exactly the right thing when it really counts is 75% praise worthy.
besides its much better than the typical strawman “Oh this guy is so pompous, bloated, and inadvertedly makes things worse for everyone around him, let’s kill him off by means of his own stupidity and hubris” like we have seen it a thousand times 80% don’t realize the error of their easily adjustable misguided ways.
like imagine if gilderoy realized the error of his ways and actually redeemed his character. wouldn’t that make up for the worst plot thread in the series?
I like the Doctor Who cameo in the swearing scene in the beginning. That's clearly Nine and Six with a few changrs.
David and Frida aren't in the Mountain King Novel at all actually, which explains why they feel out of place. And the Mountain King's brother also has more a role in the Novel, kinda replacing Frida at the end. Kinda sad to see him put to the side in the movie
5:34 I feel like majority of the storylines that you feel went nowhere were actually explanations to cover plot holes that would’ve otherwise been there.
How so?
I still like the Norwegian spellcasting. This time being something like "Giv over sinnet!" or Give back the mind.
07:22 While I agree that Johanna is only the worried Mother, I kinda understand why they wrote her like that in the movie.
Unlike us, the audience, she doesn't know that Hilda is somewhat fine and having fun, that Trylla/Momma Troll didnt switch out of malice, but out of fear and thinking that Hilda would enjoy it. For Johanna, for all acounts, her daughter was kidnapped and is a around beings that can be violent. Everytime in the show that Hilda was in trouble, Johanna would be worried, this time is worse because Hilda cant come back in the end of the Day.
And its worse when you remember that, in the season 2 finale, they just begun repairing their relantioship, adding salt to the wound.
And this role is a parallalel with the Troll Mother, away from her children, unable to bring them close. Johanna is also a mom that is being kept away from Hilda, not being able to get her back. Really nailing the empathy and paralalel, themes of the show.
When I was watching and I saw the clip from the beginning, I instantly went "Oh, Sarcastic Chorus is gonna turn that into David swearing. Yes."
This comment is about sarcastic summary, which I really adore, especially with your wit. Thank you seriously for all that you've done and I'm waiting with anticipation for the next one.
With how Netflix treats it's non-Stranger Things shows lately, I'm in constant fear they're just gonna cancel the show like they've done with soooo many of their other ones. :I
Basically all the problems of the film stem from having to include the characters from the show that were barely(if ever) in the book so it makes sense for the context of the series. If they were either absent or better managed(a few more minutes each) then this film would’ve been as good as the show. It’s still really good but you can tell it was based on a simpler book.
thank you so much for touching on the amazing art of Hilda. It's so good and the team at Mercury is FANTASTIC!! they deserve more praise >:D
I actually kinda like the mountain kings plan if it’s considered just his plan to provoke the city into war to get the mom to wake up and protect their side. I think he didn’t believe that the weapon could kill him, but that the wound and ensuing battle would cause enough troll death/harm to wake the mother. If it was a sonic beam with a massive bell noise for example, then firing it may have been enough to get her up on its own, but he’d never seen them weaponize light before, so it could be perfectly reasonable for him to think the weapon was noise-based and would hurt immensely but not kill(if this was the intent, a single line of dialogue could have affirmed this). I also think he believed that the people needed to attack him first in the stalemate, because the mother wouldn’t wake up to protect them if they themselves were the aggressors. (Wich I admit is a little dodgy considering the bell tower workers who are unquestionably dead). My last point a lot of militias-style armies should to be led from the front by the person who frothed their rage. If the mountain king is leading the charge, more trolls will unquestionably follow than if he wasn’t, so he had to be on the front lines. And, if it appeared he was in control of the situation, the mother would have no reason to wake up, because her children are fine and don’t need protection, and if she disapproved of the harm they were causing, than she’s also conscious that her sitting up would cause more, and she would probably communicate with them psychically to stop.
I loved this so much! I hope they have more seasons!
There should be a third season which will be the last
The mom had me crying every time... But I agree about the whole leaving their relationship not completely fixed for the movie
Season 3??
Would be really surprised considering how the movie basically wraps up all the mayor points of the series and gives it a happy ending.
It was confirmed a while back.
The Sergeant's Will may need to have a rework with the information of the movie.
Eh, I honestly kinda disagree about Trylla. She gets forgiven a bit too easily, and her role was kinda non-existant in the last quarter. She's just...there pretty much.
She straight up steals a child (something the Nissa confirms trolls do on the regular) and even though Hilda calls her out on in, the movie goes on to basically redeem her when she did nothing to earn it. XD
@@MRDLT00 Thre's a specific scene where Hilda calls her out on it, and what does Trylla responds? NOTHING. Wait, worse than nothing; she just IGNORES said question.
@@mesousagaby740 Yeah which had me thinking the film was gonna have her still be kind of a semi-villain in the film....but then the mothers reunite with their kids and we just forget it all like everything's okay again. XD
I am getting the feeling they will be expanding on this in s3.
@@RubyCarrots3232 Man I hope so. Really don't want to let that kind of important story thread get dropped....like David talking with his mom. XD
I really didn’t think about this until after watching this. But it makes sense. Ahlberg wants fame, glory and medals for doing nothing. And in the end, he gets exactly that, he got a medal for telling his soldiers to do nothing.
I feel u man also I love this show when it came out
1:48 lol bottom alfur
i am here for this headcaon
Ahlberg just speedran character development at the last minute of the film.
A paperwork obsessed bottom named alfa. I love you so much
Ahlberg getting the medal in the end is kinda like Henry Kissinger getting the nobel peace prize
Season 3 is out!111!1,111
Also two notes rewatching.
When Johanna first gets confronted about being outside of troll berg by the officer they shifted the camera to note his hand on his weapon. Was this supposed to be an allusion to police brutality? Because if it is, it gives a bad message of just be compliant and the police officer won’t beat the shit out of you? If it isn’t the the particular camera shift would make no sense.
2nd, When Johanna was hunting for the cave and Alberg shows up before their team up he doesn’t check the mountain instinctually. Instead he sees a pigeon trying to enter the crack in the mountain and goes “That’s Genius!” Mind you he actively decided to also walk towards the pigeon even though he was hunting for trolls.
I figured that the point they were trying to make was that the Safety Patrol was on high alert due to the increasing troll activity, leaving their officers antsy. I suppose they meant to contrast that scene with the climax, when the officers were right on the verge of firing their weapons and starting an all-out war, but managed to stay their hand.
I pray for the season 3 video, you must finish the lofi show.
Hilda's definitely going to experience some sort of trauma down the road. If I had been kidnapped out of the blue, turned into a troll, told the effects were "permanent", and that I'd never EVER see my mother again (especially at such a young age), I'd probably be scarred for life too. Not only that, but I wouldn't've been so forgiving of my former captor after all is said and done (even if their intentions were "in the right place"). I'd probably distance myself from them just so the PTSD wouldn't kick in. And Hilda still understanding the trolls after switching back to being human (while seemingly beneficial), will only add as a troubling reminder of what happened.
And I know what you're thinking: Hilda said, "Well, that was traumatic. But, such is the life of an adventurer". Keep in mind...she said that BEFORE any of the traumatic events she'd experience later on in the series. It's one thing to go off on an adventure, and seeing troubling sights, but Hilda was at least able to go home and feel safe at the end of the day. Having that sense of safety and security suddenly being taken away from one's self would traumatize anyone (regardless of how "tough" they are, or at any age). Yes, Hilda is a tough, adventurous and resilient kid...but she's still a kid nonetheless.
I honestly hope Season 3 touches a little bit on that just to acknowledge how hard it was for both Hilda and her mom. Maybe even show a process of healing. I think that would be pretty interesting.
season 3 of hilda is out!!!
Why is no one talking about that one episode where the weather girl comes back. That ending has a LOOOOT to unpack, and NO ONE is taking about it!
I wish Deputy Gerda had saved the day, not Ahlberg. I really like the "villain's assistant realizes their boss is a jerk and revolts" trope. But when it's time for Gerda to stand up and do the right thing, she lets Ahlberg fire the weapon anyway. She should've just fistfighted him, and let's be real here, Gerda would win. Then Ahlberg orders someone else to fire the weapon while Gerda is busy pining him down, and the plot continues as normal. Except in my version, Gerda is the one to receive the medal, and Ahlberg retires without getting anything, other than a black eye.
Yeah that bothered me a lot. Absolute cowardice
Also they should have evacuated the city and let troll mom up omg
wait what the heck i saw you on reddit and then your channel got suggested to me independently of that. well, the terrifying algorithms win today, im subscribed
This aged well. SEASON 3 IS OUT NOW!! Can't wait to see your review on it
This was perfectly timed as I just watched this in the morning during breakfast.
As much as it seems annoying for him to get a metal, I think it’s somewhere it’s realistic to the world we live in. Perhaps not the rapid solution anyone would’ve wanted but I kind a liked it it just sort of fit in an uncomfortable way
is it just me or is it really weird that trundle was the mountain king? I mean, a major plot point for the whole show is that the trolls aren't inherently evil. Despite that, the first troll she trusts is the main villain?
Honestly, I think this is a pretty solid review. You make some good points on the characters and the plot. One thing I will say (and a few people have already said it) is that David and Frida were not originally major characters in the books. But, because they’ve become fan favourites, the crew probably felt that they couldn’t just leave them out. Still, I do think Frida had some good minor moments with her magic skills and gaining courage. I totally agree with you about David and his Mom though. I think they could’ve had a brief conversation between them just before the boulder hit the bell tower. And, of course, I’m totally with you about Ahlberg and the medal. It just felt like a convenient way to write him out of the series. Though, it did provide a logical next step to Gerda’s character arc which I appreciated.
Finally, I’m kind of sensing that a lot of what they seemingly shoehorned into the movie is going to be plot points for Season Three, like Trundle’s brother, Frida’s gained confidence in herself and her abilities, and Kaisa’s explanation of how Witches don’t like to get involved in Troll affairs. I have a suspicion that these will be explored more in Season Three, especially with what they set up about the Witches and how their magic works in Season Two. There is very obvious potential there, and I believe Luke Pearson himself said that Season Three is going to have a more overarching story than the first two seasons. I think that the world they’ve set up with the Witches (which was not in the Graphic Novels) might just be the focus. Either that or Hilda attempting to learn who her Dad is. In any case, hopefully Season Three will be better than we expect.
I am GLAD Ahlberg isn't an antagonist anymore. He was especially annoying I'm this movie and I was SO relieved when he finally FINALLY had ONE moment of common sense
“She just wanted to protect her daughter from the thug life politics of trolling”
I have no words.
0:40 To be fair, High Boi has been doing that for two years already. His channel just blew up recently.
I hated the movie, just can't take Hilda being friendly to the troll that simply kidnapped her and made her stay away from her home and family, besides the resolution: "once a year the bells will be silenced and the trolls can come in", other than that day everything will stay the same
Honestly, this movie felt like a long episode instead of a movie. It wasn't bad in fact it was good but it was so underwhelming to watch cause I expected more from it.
I've read the book, and I was worried they'll put Frida and David on the side line since they have no role in the original book.
And... they did exactly what I feared. It's a bit of a shame, I was hoping Frida would do more with her magic to save Hilda.
Hey man, season 3 has been out for awhile now. you should watch it man.
What I'm kinda bothered by is the fact that. When Hilda turns back into a human, she can still understand the trolls. Like. I don't care how much time she spent with them in those few days, if she couldn't before, why would she now?
“F___ grown ups”
-David
been way too hyped up for another episode
I liked the movie, but I really think that the movie could have used more time really well, I feel like it moved way too fast, and troll Hilda definitely could have had more time.
I really like the scenes with the bells, and I don’t like how they only used those in two scenes.
Also I wish Frida and David did something. Also I feel like troll Hilda could have been alone a bit longer.
Woodman not being in it was a missed opportunity.
Really agree 100% with this review. It pretty much sums up my thoughts on the movie. I did appreciate the effort of trying to include David and Frida into the story, but it just felt so much like unnecessary padding. Love how honest, and frankly funny, this video was.
Thanks for the video!
