Until the kiss and Obsidian, my mom was in full denial they were once a couple. She was a firm believer that they were just friends. I was under the same impression that's what I'm Just Your Problem had meant, but a couple seasons later (I don't remember which episode) I was starting to think they had been something more than friends. When it finally came out that my dad and I were right and my mom was wrong, we basically rubbed it in her face like a couple of kids, haha (all in good fun of course).
One of the big reasons I think the Bubbiline in the finale works so much better than so many other 'Last Episode Hookups' is that Marcy and PB kissing in the finale ISN'T actually them getting back together. I think it's pretty clear they got together some time BEFORE the finale, and the Big Damn Kiss is simply an affirmation/confirmation that Yes, they are a couple again. Personally, I think the ending of 'Stakes' is when PB and Marcy actually started dating again (Macy's 'Now we can be together forever' line REALLY feels like a 'I'm ready to give US a try again' line), and after that we tend to see PB and Marcy together a LOT leading up the finale.
That’s how I see it too. They probably got back together as a couple around the time when PB lost her kingdom and was basically living as a farmer in a cabin. So like, around Stakes.
I'm pretty sure they were together before "Broke his Crown". As that was very much introducing your girlfriend to your Dad episode. Also there's the fact that Finn thinks Marcy might be dating someone when quizzed by her bio Dad.
Yes thank you, that's always what I thought too, when I saw them kiss in the finale for the first time I was like 'well that's definitely not the first moment they get together' the way they acted felt very.. easy (if that's the word I'm trying to find) like they were laughing the moment away and then boom kiss I mean i knew they had a history and were together in the past so that could explain why they were so at ease to kiss each other but it always hit on me in a way like that wasn't the first moment they got back together and it was somewhere after 'stakes' especially with how much more we see of them together after that (wearing each other's clothes, the meeting the parent whole situation, even in the background having a date night in one of the episodes)
Fun Fact: the creator of Adventure Tume wanted them to be as a couple sooner. But TV supervisors said Not a Chance in Hell. So when they found out it was the Last season. She dropped the kiss durring the Finale as a Big Middle Finger. Saying "we were cancelled Anyway, so I'm ending it on my own terms"
@#1 Ruby Oshi The 'creator' the person was referring to was the writers also the storyboarders, since it was them who thoroughly developed pb and Marcy's relationship.
It matters cuz some people care who you're talking about, the creator is Pendleton Ward. He is male. But like another commenter said I think the original commenter was speaking more of storyboard artist and misspoke.
I like to think of PB's characterization as seen through Finn's perspective. In the early season he really idealized her, but as he grew up, he started realizing that she's multidimensional. Also as he grew up he realized that she's more like a mom to him than a peer, lol.
@@cheezbiscuit4140 It's interesting that it's PB who sent Finn off during the first part of islands, making him promise that he will return (like a mother) and when Finn returned from his adventure with his mother, radically changed with a new perspective, PB changed too into a candy elemental.
I did love Marceline and Bubblegum's relationship. It is perhaps the most mature one in Western Animation (that includes Adult Animation), seeing why they broke up and then managed to get together again after working on themselves is something I think people, not just kids need to see to form actual healthy relationships in the future.
Fr in Obsidian Marceline asked if it was okay for her to sing the So Glad song in order to open the door. The song happened when they broke up so her asking shows how she's more considerate of Bonnie's feelings now
I can just imagine how all of the writers collectively sighed in relief when they were allowed to make them kiss, it would've been so frustrating to put so much time into them as individual characters and their backstory together to just leave as friends
I mean, Finn and FP stayed as friends and most people, including the writers, were ok with that. I think it was great PB and Marceline got back together, but it’s not like leaving two exes as just friends was something unheard of or not done before in Adventure Time.
@@chrisperez9854 I'm not saying leaving exes as friends is something bad! Not at all! I'm just saying it would've been unsatisfactory to leave PB and Marceline as friends after all the clear hints at them getting together again
@@kingssideparadise6813 Shippers see any and all things shared between characters as "hints" though. Characters hugged? Shipped. Characters shared coffee together? Shipped. obsidian is easily the best thing this franchise has ever done, was legit crying near the end from how emotional and impactful it was. some of the best shit ive seen in a good while now
I want to bring this up. One of the biggest reactions to seeing Marcy and Bonnie kiss in the finale was along the lines of: “Man, poor Finn. His two crushes got together instead of getting with him. That’s a rough L to take.” Excuse me, what? If you watched the show, Finn stopped having romantic feelings towards Bubblegum a LOOOOOOONG time before the finale. They were good friends for a while and he literally saw her as “one of the boys”. And Finn NEVER had romantic feelings towards Marceline in any fashion at any point in the show. He even says this when he was asking to go to the movies with her when he was like 13. Knowing the mature young man that he was at the end of the show, Finn was probably elated that two of his closest friends were able to come together as a couple. People were so focused on their own shipping agendas that they didn’t even recognize what a beautiful and organic moment Marceline and Bubblegum finally coming together was. Their whole story is pure magic.
I wish Finn never had a crush on PB. Such a waste of time for him to pine on someone who was always in love with someone else. I know he’s been over her for a while but I feel that if Bubbline was planned from the start, why have Finn like PB at all?
@@chrisperez9854 character development and stuff. by demonstrating how childish he is with romantic feelings in earlier seasons we can watch him grow, and see him be okay with just having himself and his friends. we see near the end that he likes huntress wizard, but he’s okay with not pursuing her and it’s really nice.
People who say stuff like that about finn usually heavily project on him, especially earlier-seasons-Finn where he was childish and unlucky with dating/crushes (just like them IRL!)
Yeah they are honestly just great characters with awesome backstories who had a well written romantic relationship. They were definitely the most developed relationship in the show, which I was fine with, especially because their same sex relationship was not treated as a big deal.
For me, Marceline is probably one of the best characters I've ever seen in a cartoon. The writer's definitely put everything they had into her character.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Marceline's dream in Stakes of PB kissing her. Definitely the most explicit the series got about the ship until the finale.
i have a theory about that, in the dream it starts raining (which is PB’s tears) so i think that PB actually did kiss her and it got implemented in the dream.
They actually make a lot of sense as partners not just because of personality types but also the fact that they're both old asf despite looking like teenagers. Both are prolly a hundred or a thousand years old at this point.
@@Cherry-pu4mxthe saying is ‘opposites attract’. Being opposite can mean complementary, since where one is weak the other is strong - and especially since PB was treated as a literal goddess throughout her life, it makes sense that she’d fall for the one person who understood her and challenged her. They were both old, both had seen atrocities and come out the other side, and where one struggles the other can be strong. It’s Yin and Yang, tale as old as time, dunno what you’re on about mate.
@@AnEmu404 The reality is tht opposites don't attract and you are deluded by your fixation on hollywood fiction. There needs to be a level of commonality for a relationship to work. Hence why in couples counseling the counselor always recommends a shared activity of similar interest to jump start the relationship. You will find tht it's a struggle when there is constant disagreement or little depth in conversation as interests differ. Yin and yan in a relationship focuses on femininity and masculinity as complimentary. Safe to say Marceline and pb are leaning toward more masculine traits. They're strong and opposing, rather than complimenting
@@Cherry-pu4mx me when i try to justify my disagreement of canon lesbians saying they're both too masc for each other and therefore not a good pairing (completely oblivious to the fact that this is not only a heavily gendered but also superficial take that shows little to no understanding of relationships)
This relationship is what I always look for in tv shows but never get. Gay or straight. Bubblegum and Marceline are their own people and they don't get together right away! They grow as people first! They communicate! They support each other! They just... They're so real and honest and (eventually) healthy! Why can't other shows do this?! Finn is my favorite character, but I love that he grew to not need a relationship and realized his own toxic behavior. Bubbline works on the other end, where being together makes them better. ❤️
That didn't really happen with Finn though, all things considered. Homie straight up bottled up his life until he could meet Jake again, he said it himself, he freaked and waited until he died just to see him again. He needed his relationship with Jake so badly he neglected all others, not just with people, but with himself, with life. He fell out of one toxic behavior and fell directly into another for the rest of his existence. Didn't even have anyone he wanted to check in with before he reincarnated. I mean, it's touching that he held out for Jake, but I know for a fact that if Jake hadn't ascended all earthly desires and actually checked in on Finn, he wouldn't have wanted him to live out the rest of his life like that. It's not even strictly romance in the sense, but rather a sense of fulfillment. They care about each other, but Jake lived a full life. He got a loving relationship, he had a family, he overcame his toxic card war problems and old bad romantic relationships. Reckoned with his old criminal lifestyle. Dude was straight up ascending in the afterlife. And Finn.... It was nice seeing Jake and Finn get back at the end, but I can't shake the image of Finn's final chapter being him as a skeleton screaming Jake's name in the void. I'm gonna make this clear. This isn't about ships, this is about character development. Finn got done dirty in that part. He never got round to figuring out the whole meat reality thing like he said to the Comet. Jake did more than he did. And it isn't about doing the same things Jake did, either. He could be with someone, he could be poly, he could just have a kid he looks after, he could have different friends, he could just be alone. None of that matters. The guy just didn't develop. He literally turned back into his kid form right after he died. That sucks.
@@cj6498 Would it be crazy to say that I like that though? Adventure Time was never about *perfectly* happy endings (Bubbline is as close as we get). And I never really saw his desire to be with Jake as all encompassing, when the end (the original) had him seeing his mother and connecting with the music hole (a weird sentence lol). Yes, there was a toxic part of him that could not be happy without Jake, but we still saw him being a hero to the end. I honestly can't imagine Finn just throwing away everyone else because he lost Jake. He seemed at least content as an adult in obsidian. In the end it lies with our interpretation. I'm an optimist. My love for Finn means I see him finding a mostly happy life even after Jake died, helping people and still learning until the next life where maybe his spirit grows even more. He's not a twelve year old when he changes in the afterlife, he's the Finn we see at the original end of Adventure Time, y'know? I'm not good at explaining my thoughts and I don't wanna argue, but I hope I got across my feelings XD
As someone who was watching to see who Finn would end up with seeing him bounce between love interests left and right to not really end with any of the main characters was a bit disappointing but yeah these two make for a good couple. We don't really have a lot in like them in cartoons
I think young Marceline deciding to be a monster that scares people away before she meets Simon still tracks. She was a young child. Children make a lot of big decisions and then don't stick to them when it gets hard, or becomes inconvenient. When she met Simon she was a scared and lonely kid and I bet she didn't want to scare him off because he made her hopeful. And then Simon left her. Which must have hurt a lot and probably made her think (at least for a while) that she shouldn't have put her hope in him. She opened herself up to being abandoned again. And every time she abandons her resolution to be a monster and scare people away it only ever ends in her getting hurt/abandoned which would make her more reluctant to trust over time. The break-up with PB also feels a bit like Marceline preemptively ending their relationship before PB can decide to abandon her for her people and duties as a princess. Marceline not mercilessly following through on a decision she made as a child while she was very hurt and vulnerable and trying her best to hold it together doesn't feel like a flaw or a mistake to me. More like a lonely little girl's need for companionship overpowering her newly found cynicism.
I think so too. She didn't become "a monster" in that moment. She just learned to think that everytime she gets abandoned she did it because she wanted it. Until she scares them of before they can abandon her (see break up with PB) and in he end scaring them of befor getting close with them (beginning of adventure time).
Not to mention, due to her vampirism, she's been locked as a teenager for all this time. In Stakes, she admits that she's felt herself mature for the first time in aeons.
Fr tho I swear I haven’t seen a gay relationship done right until PB and Marcy. Legends of Kora and the Last of us had the worst gay relationships. I can’t even remember Ellie’s girlfriend that’s how forgettable she was
We needed this precident to be set. Canon Bubbline is like water in the desert. Their relationship was handled so well even if it wasn't meant to exist in the first place. I hope they set the tone for all future lesbian couples, I love them so much
Really? We did? I didn't know we as a generation needed two non reproducing people to push an incentive to lessen the world's population in a show. I didn't think we're that desperate. Life and Babies are a gift from God.
Lessen the world’s population… Bruh. We’ve been consistently increasing the world population at an upward rate since the Black Death ended in _1350_ . Just come out and say you hate gay people. If you’re gonna be bigoted, at least be openly bigoted instead of this halfhearted bullshit. And nobody’s “incentivizing” people to be gay. That’s like “incentivizing” someone to have a certain skin tone. Sure, environmental factors could affect it but a lot of the most important factors are pretty fucking far outside of your control. All things like this do are maybe let someone who is different actually identify and relate to a type of character or relationship they don’t usually see in media, and for a younger viewer, it possible helps them understand themselves themselves better. How horrifying /s
Am I the only one who feels like Marceline was intentionally trying to screw Finn's chance with Bubblegum? I mean she made him do absolutely horrible stuff and I just can't believe she genuinely thought it was a good idea. I think she was actually scared Finn would take Bubblegum and then he will never let go of her.
i feel like marceline knows bubblegum well enough to know she wouldn’t romantically pursue finn, rather she just wanted to mess with bubblegum and upset her also i wanna add that both PB and marceline see finn as more like a little brother so i feel itd be weird for marcy to see finn as a romantic rival
“A brainlord like Bonnie? You’d be bored of her in a week!” Spoken like a true ex. In case any ignorant morons still think “their romance came out of nowhere”, there’s tons of subtext/flat out text in the first episode they share screen time together. Even before “What Was Missing”.
A lot of princesses liked Finn, so maybe Marceline was worried PB would follow that trend. Wonder what her reaction would’ve been to 13 year old PB crushing on Finn.
Honestly PB is the only person I could imagine Marceline ending up with. I always thought that she would just be alone. Cursed to be immortal, having to watch all her friends grow old and die. She would honestly prefer to just be alone if PB didn’t exist. I was happy when they got together because the creators gave me a relationship I didn’t even know I wanted

Adventure Time has every type of romance story we have the coming of age with Finn and Flame Princess, where the protagonists fall in love, do their thing, break up, grow up as people and later, when the dust is settled, become good pals with eachother, maybe they weren't ment for eachother, but they had an undeniable impact on both of their lives we have the classic tragedy with Betty and Simon, an impossible love that was doomed from the very start due to things out of their control, but making clear that they were soulmates we have the fluffy cute wholesome romance between two individuals who make eachother better, complement eachother perfectly and ultimately push through their differences to meet a happy conclusion, leaving only true, unconditional love on the horizon and finally we have the mature and established one with Jake and Lady Rainicorn, the perfect couple of adults who manage several families and act as tutors the rest truly a masterpiece of a show, blows out of the water every other show from its generation
it's not that simple there was a point where Steven Universe was on par or maybe even above Adventure Time SU's prime came right when season 7 and 8 dipped a little bit in quality (they made too many filler episodes), fortunately the last two were pretty amazing and coincidentally Steven Universe lost its focus, although it recovered on the final lap
One thing we do gotta bring up here is not everyone due to cartoon Network being cartoon Network couldn't always see a new episode heck I didn't know about the shirt sniffing and I would've if I saw it went yeah that's a ship even other people missed episodes so it's not surprising if it felt out of nowhere
and also the meaning of the songs is often lost in the translation... and they are the as said many times before especially for "i am just your problem" the brightest clue for all this

I absolutely HATE when people say this relationship came out of nowhere or that they just “made them lesbians and ruined the show” or some shit, it’s like no bruh, you just weren’t paying attention 💀
“What Was Missing” came out in 2011. 7 years before the finale. Literally every other episode that they shared with each other had implications that they were closer than “good friends”. If you watched their interactions in Sky Witch, Varmints, the ENTIRETY of Stakes, Broke His Crown, etc. and you didn’t see any romantic tension, you’re blind.
It wasn’t planned from the start, but it was undeniable it would happen given the popularity of WWM, the changing social climate over the years, and the writers growing interest in PB and Marceline’s dynamic.
I though it did too, but in one of the episodes I can't remember which, outright said that they were together. I was like "Ooooh, that explains why Pb disliked meeting Marceline in that one episode, and their general dynamic. Also why that shirt sniffing ordeal was a bit suspicious."
I remember when they finally kissed I didn't realize what happened at first. My mom gasped and I asked "what?" She was like "They just kissed!" I then rewound it and watched the scene again and did the biggest gasp I thought I was gonna pass out lol. Then we both started cheering and freaking out over it. Good times lol.
For me and my dad, we we're sitting at the dinning table, and once that kiss happened...we we're just like: "Did that happened??" "Did we miss all of the signs" and by this yeah, we missed a lot of signs-
They're actually Bi. Marcelline has dated Ash and PB dated Mr Creampuff and her younger self seemed attracted to Finn, just because they ended up with each other at the end doesn't mean they are no longer bi.

The growth from season 1 is maybe my favorite growth in tv history simply because the show was released for kids and had the appeal of fantasy and it fits all those classic tropes that were perfect for someone's childhood imagination before maturing and breaking those tropes, while still having the tropes there they would explain the issues with them or that it's not realistic and that even fantasy has its problems and that people must go through change and that growing up has so much beauty behind it. Also adds to why the credit's theme and final song of the show go from never wanting to grow up to growing up and learning from those memories.
deadass, this was the BEST slow burn ship ever. even after i stopped watching adventure time, i was still invested in the characters and their relationship to each other. i was about 9 when "what was missing" came out, and i honestly believe it helped me understand that i could love people of the same gender without it being so incredibly different. if it was marshall lee singing to princess bubblegum, it would have carried the same emotional weight. even if they weren't explicitly together at first, i really think the ship paved the way to accepting queer folk and accepting them as complex humans, just the same as anyone else

Sarcastic Chorus is the sole reason I’m giving Adventure Time another go. I never saw it when it first came out, I tried getting into it years later after the show had fairly recently ended. I’m going at back now because of the chaotic joy this guy gets from talking about this show.
I believe that she's not evil she made mistakes, decisions she thought would be the greater good(mostly for her kingdom), she grew up without any parents or guardians to guide her while growing up, basically raised herself and took care of her brother in an apocalyptic world she was born in. Her created Uncle Gumbald's betrayal, during when the Candy Kingdom is still young she had to deal with the bath boy gang, Shoko's betrayal, the raiders, Ice kings kidnappings also when he almost killed her falling into the Lich's well and getting possessed, almost dying twice because of that. It's no wonder why she developed paranoia and became what she is now. Now to think of it, when it comes to her kingdom and ones she cares about, she's actually pretty selfless.
She's not evil she's morally grey. Which is a more realistic take on a fictional character. It's what makes her so entertaining. She does sometimes bad things for good reasons.
@@kasa-ysayan Thank you sm!! @@dulcerocio5124 No probs. I find it annoying when people say that. Who could possibly match Marceline better than PB? They're polar opposites but complement each other very well, they borrow each other's best traits, the fact that they're both immortal makes it even better for them (they wouldn't have to worry about each other dying because of age). People often misunderstand PB's character because she's a very complex character. And because PB's backstory gets revealed way later into the show adds to that. She internalizes a lot of her feelings for the sake of being rational. And since from the start she was completely alone (though she had her brother, she had to take care of him and didn't have anyone to take care of her and so) that's why she created a family, she felt lonely but she didn't have a lot of deep relationship while growing up so she didn't know how relationships work, that caused her conflict in the original series. By Obsidian you can see how much PB has changed, she took Marceline's advise and learned to balanced her work and personal pizza, the writers showed this to us by making PB live with Marceline. She's not as paranoid as before and trusts that her kingdom can do just fine without her supervision 24/7. She's not an open book, that's why people tends to misjudge her. She had the most interesting characterization in the show imo, she's a character that shouldn't be seen from a black and white perspective. Having them being exes was such a good choice of the writers, watching their history unfold, the relationship they used to have and how that impacts them both in the present, instead of just seeing them build a relationship alongside the shows timeline was so refreshing. Not only for a cartoon, but live action as well. Let characters have baggage, yall Also, they matched so well. Both being immortal and as old as they were. It made sense that they had a history together. It's a really fun dynamic. Anyways, when I 1st watched the show, I was just a tiny gay, but seeing them in it, even though it was a lot of *wink wink nodge nodge* without confirmation, was actually really important to me. At that point, I thought it was going to stay in subtext, bc like, around s7 i feel like the AT staff dropped the subtext and they were very clearly together, but without explicit confirmation ppl were still like "hur dur dur they just good friends hur dur" so when they had the kiss in the finale it was such a big good surprise
"In a world full of princesses, Marceline is the one, and only, queen." I mean, there's also Werewolf Queen, but I don't think we ever get to see her, she's only mentioned, IIRC, by that one worm teaching a class of other worms in that one early episode, and that entire lesson could have been a hypothetical to begin with. Assuming it's not hypothetical, though, we could maybe extrapolate that other species of storybook monsters might also have/be queens. There could be a Mummy Queen, and a Frankenstein's Monster Queen milling about Ooo somewhere.
@ZE Brigitte A lot of straight ships have problematic heteronormative or misoginistic undertones. Example is almost all the shows from up to the mid 2000's featuring a husband and wife who secrety hate each other, with the husband being a lazy slob who gets drunk every night, and the wife a stuck-up priss who hates her husband and hates being his slave but continues to do it anyway.
@ZE Brigitte Literally the only difference is that straight people only romantically love the opposite gender, while gay people are men who love other men and lesbians are women who love other women. This commenter is just kinda dumb because it doesn’t matter if its a straight ship or homosexual ship.

Bubbline imo is THE best wlw ship. their story was told in such a unique way and despite them fitting into certain tropes, the characters feel like nothing you've ever seen before. the fact that theyre exes? and both immortal beings who's seen the world changes around them? chef's kiss. that being said, hard to forget just little of them we got in the actual show (as text or subtext), which for me made them more intriguing, but disappointing nonetheless. Obsidian saved them a little bit, gave some meat to their relationship and to fans something to work with. their history is so long its probably impossible to cover it all without making the audience feel like theyve been spoon fed information, but I wish we got to see a little more of their past. Cait\Vi, the other couple you compare them to, feel more like theyre extremely important parts to each others' stories in the show, which is something that Bubbline sadly never had (thanks censorship), and we also get to see thier relationship's origin story in detail. Glad we're getting more explicit rep these days but will forever cherish the founding fathers like this ship.
I wouldn’t really call it the best ship since it only happened at the ending of the show, we never really saw them as a couple until Obsidian happened which showed how much chemistry they have.
@@Puffinlia I mean the show also focuses a lot more on the romance then other shows which is a unfair advantage to really call it better. They had more time to use to flesh it out
“This special didn’t need to exist, but I’m glad it does” Narratively I agree😂 However just for the sake of another middle finger to those that didn’t want this relationship, we needed this😂
@@kasa-ysayan Yeah that’s true. Also since the ship happened at the end we never really saw PB and Marcelino as a couple so I though it sucked asa ship but watching Obsidian changed my mind.
I remember people saying we were "crazy" for thinking they were a thing and said "your reading too much into it, it's a cartoon." Glad we got to laugh in their faces
I love the comedic and stubborn personality they gave to Marcelin, also the inteligent and brave one to Princess Bubblegum. Just love how they broke typical stereotypes from both roles and went further to even make them a couple. Love this show alot. Ice King's plot is my favourite.

I was making jokes about how these two were as a couple then broke up and that's why they hated each other to my sister and she was in full denial. I love watching her getting upset because she really wanted fin and PB together. She countered my claim with "Marceline had a boyfriend" and "SPB and fin was a couple until she became BPB". Then few more seasons came out and Marceline and PB relationship gotten intimate. My sister was so pissed when they kissed lol. I mean she really want fin to be with PB
PB and Finn got hard shut down in the episode she got deaged, doubly so when he realised how old she was, some people just never realised it and that's when 'some' people started to hate her, the purpose of her character wasn't some wish fulfilment quest giver.
I remember when I used to want Finn and PB to be canon. What was I, seven? That was waaaaaay before I had any concept of queercoding (of even queerness in general) and way before Bubbline was canon. Man oh man how the times do change.
I like to think that they officially got back together some time after "stakes" and before the finale, that kiss was way too natural to be their first kiss. I think another thing that makes bubbline the best ship is that it isn't a will they won't they kind of thing, it's about two people growing into themselves and trying again on a past relationship. There was never a question of if they would get together, it was about the when.
No wonder why 'shipping is and has always been so popular - it's likely projecting oneself onto at least one half of a potential pairing. The only line between regular 'ships and self-insert, harem-style shows or something like Twilight depends on whether or not both characters are Characters (having a defined personality to bounce off of and develop with).
Maybe it represents our desire for love. Even if we don't project ourselves as one of the characters we still want to see love blooming. Maybe it's because in fictional stories we can ignore the inevitable problems that can come with a relationship or its' end .
Nah healthy shipping can happen because you wish those people to be happy, I mean dont get all giggly you start shipping your friend and their crush once they trust you enough to share this with you? Just me ?

Marcie and Ice King is the greatest story arc for me. I always found how she still loves him, even though he's a complete nutcase as the Ice King, to be very endearing. Despite his gross misunderstanding of basically everything as IK, she will kick his ass but never judge. She knows what's going on, has tried to help him, but knows she can't.
One of the things I loved about marcy is her voice actress. She had such an amazing singing voice. She voiced maho in the English dub of Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, and she was a character in the English dub of Rosario Vampire
I watched Adventure Time as a little kid and didn't understand my feelings at all. I didn't know who I was yet and just liked the show. Of course I had little crushes on PB and Marceline but didn't really know why Coming back to this show after hearing about the finale (and being an out lesbian) makes me feel so happy in a way I didn't know I would be. It feels like the show grew up alongside me. Even when I wasn't there with it
@@yashindiamente282 Trust me there was way more straight media out there to influence me than lesbian media. If a single depiction of gay girls was enough to make me gay, I feel like I was probably destined to end up that way no matter what

Chorus: Folks...this came out of nowhere. Pb: proceeds to vigorously inhale Marcy's shirt. Chorus: If you were BLIND!!! Possibly one of your best jntros, ngl. That editing in the first few seconds were choice. 👌
That episode "Broke his crown" is totally Marceline introducing her partner to her parent. And PB, for the sake of Marceline agreed meeting up with the ice king despite IK's actions towards her from the beginning of the showm
I remember that sometime around season 3-4 there was this video about Marceline's voice actor at a convention or sth saying that the creator of the show straight up told her that Marceline and Princess Bubblegum used to date. So I always thought that them being a thing was something either universally agreed or just cannon, without the show having to confirm anything. Link: ruclips.net/video/AZV223FM19Y/видео.html
She was forced to take it back (by saying it was just an idea or she misheard or something) or get fired by execs so everyone didnt take it as canon or real. Big discourse for a while about it. I remember all the damn forum flaming about it. Ended up switching to regular show cuz it wasnt as much as a dumpster fire.
This just goes to show how willfully ignorant to lesbianism the majority of the population is when the lesbian pairing isnt pornographic. Ive always related to marcy (and bonnie) in more ways than one. She helped me discover my love for bass, women, and punk music. She helped me come to terms with my own father issues, being adopted as well. She will always be one of my favorite characters ever Also the homophobia filling the comments (new comments) is just... further reinforces my first statement.
The morally grey aspect of their lives is all so bizarre the way it affects their relationship though. As in the series starts out the Ice King is definitely an villain, but as the series progresses Princess Bubblegum turns out to be in even worst tyrant. Many of the characters have tragic history that seems to brush aside there questionable actions in the present. There long lives sort of indicate that they understand each other best and are meant to be together, but they treat other characters as or like pets were fleeting amusements. Finn is not a person to them, he is like a prize goldfish that will die in a few weeks.
Stupid ship shut up Marcy could’ve been with anybody even another girl but PB annoying ass def no. Half of y’all literally Jsut praise and love this ship BECAUSE it’s a lesbian couple. Like how they pull that off and Finn still somehow alone
I remember when I learned they were cannon, I almost cried I was so happy. It so relieving to see an lgbt relationship in a kids show that has actually good background to it, and isn’t pushed or forced representation, but it was possibly planned from the beginning. This is only one of the reasons why I love adventure time.
Okay, I thought the ship was forced at the end because I didn't remember the hints or I was so young I didn't even catch them. Thanks for making this video, now I see the build-up of their relation :)
Same, I didn't quite understand the show as a kid. It was to complex and deep but I still enjoyed the random episodes I got to see. This show is pure art so full of emotion
Mannn the fact that PB and Marcy are together always makes me wonder if Gumball and Marshal Lee have this kinda history, because the boys seem like they just hate each other not because they're exes but because they're too different, their dislike for each other further reinforced by their fondness for Fionna
There's something interesting about it their relationship seems different depending on who's the narrator (I think Marceline even told that story once) and they definitely were meant to be since in the Fiona and cake spin off they got together
PB and Marcy instantly became one of my favorite Adventure Time couples! Sure even their relationship had it's ups and downs but it's still one of my all time favorites!!!
A walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says,"I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
After Flame Princess, I figured Finn was never meant to be with a princess. It just wasn't fitting for him. He's a knight Archetype, but not all knights need to be beholden to a princess. Perhaps, a fellow adventurer and fighter would make sense. I just wish they'd developed him and Huntress Wizard more in the specials. Finn finally could have realized the princesses he was pursuing were simply not his type. Rather, he'd realize a fellow adventurer fits his drive far more. Someone he can one day romance/ slice of life one day, explore dungeons and fight monsters the next. Flame Princess probably was the closest princess to being that for Finn until he ruined what they had. As for Bubbleline, I think Bubblegum only truly came to her senses in the present when he lost her kingdom to the King of Ooo for awhile and after Elementals. I think that's when she begun to realize focusing on her 'peeps' shouldn't be all there is to her life. For the record, I don't necessarily think everything in Fiona's side of the universe plays out identically, but we'll see with time. What I'm wondering how Simon will play into things. Speaking of Simon, I'd argue Simon x Betty is best ship, or was. (going by the various flashbacks we saw of them together) It really makes you feel bad for Simon he couldn't get to be with her in the end. I hope Simon finds another who can fill much of the Betty-shaped hole in his heart as possible.
When she lost her kingdom is when she had to actually pay attention to herself. They both had to fix their own stuff ]or they'd never be happy, nearly every Adventure Time romance had a lot of unhealthy stuff going on, but I think Bubblegum was probably often repulsed by Marceline's neediness and that would never change as long as she was too busy with work, Marceline projects this when she claims that Bubblegum wants her to be like a candy kingdom subject, but Marceline also never actually cared about what PB wanted until the events of the show.
Also, like Bubblegum, she constantly has drip. In fact, it always kinda bothered me how FInn keeps wearing the same damn clothes everytime...but Marcy and Bonny? Yeah, they have unlimitted amounts of clothes. It's like As Told By Ginger; the girls always wear something different, but the boys don't, and as a male (who's also a twink), I'm freaking offended, man. XD
Lol true, they even make a joke about that in that one episode where Finn tears off his pajamas and he's wearing his classic clothes underneath and Jake's like: "Do you ever take those off?"
Another reason why Adventure Time was so awesome and unique. Not many cartoons have their characters in completely different outfits for every appearance. They usually have them just wear the same stuff out of convenience for animating. But for Marcy, PB, and FP, they really went the extra mile.
Maybe I'm just sensitive right now, but this video had me spilling a few tears😅 these two hold a sweet space in my heart and i never get tired of them, so your insight on them and their relationship hit me there. I'm a firm believer that "good representation" can't be done without a good story, because of course you can show a queer character and say it's representation, but without a good story it feels dull, empty and disingenuous. We want to be portrayed as actual people with stories and layers and I feel like they're just a perfect example. I don't really know what I'm trying to say here, but this was a great video❤
Love that. They hold a special place in my heart too. I grew up with this show and it was pretty much my favorite for a lot of reasons. I was definitely closeted when it started and out by the finale and seeing queer women represented in my favorite show meant so much to me it's hard to describe! It was so much more than having my OTP be canon or whatever haha. Not to mention PB was always my favorite character and i had a crush on her way b4 she was hinted to be queer lol

I'm obsessed with this ship and I'm glad people are still talking about it because its awesome. I just finished the series and besides Finn and Jake these two were my favorites!!
I had this paused for 6 months when you got to the Obsidian section, and finally rewatched all of Adventure Time just to watch Distant Lands. And now I can finally hit play again. God damn.
I have so much fun listening to you talk about ships, analyzing characters, and their impact on the story. I've never even watched Ladybug or Adventure Time, but watching your videos makes me want to. I hope to see your take on Avatar couples at some point.
I've never watched this whole show but it seriously fascinates me. This, however, is the only time I've cried with happiness at something adventure time related. This is the storyline that makes me want to push through the first few seasons.
The way that there was uneasy tension between them at the start and they slowly talked again, discussed past pains, and re-entered each other's lives before dating in the finale was gradual and I felt as though the flow was more realistic. And in Obsidian you can tell that they treat each other better compared to the first time they dated. An example would be when Marceline asked if Bonnie was fine with her singing that So Glad song knowing that it's related to their breakup
What a wonderful analysis of this amazing couple! 💖 I'm literally only on Season 2 of the show, but I've just had to go ahead and watch all the Bubbline scenes because I knew that they got together from it being all over the Internet a few years ago. There are sooo many seasons, and I just couldn't wait. These two have my heart. 😭
I was a kid back when the "I'm just your problem" episode aired and oh man I remember blushing hard from the raw emotion in the song and the realization that these two really used to be a couple. It was all there, so you'd imagine that it drove me nuts when my friends still denied it, including all of the other hints shown throughout the series, allll the waaay to the ending. So yah I was beyond thrilled when it finally became "official" through their kiss in the finale. They will forever be one of my favorite ships.
At the start of the series, I disliked Princess Bubblegum, but, as her character developed, she eventually grew on me, and became my number one favorite Adventure Time character. I love how you described her development, like all those puzzle pieces were finally coming together, to form one definitive character.
i dont think! currently we see for many seasons how finn and bubble's emotions growing up and bubble push up from herself because she is too old and have many duty... at least we got suddenly lesbians... but before lesbians bubble fall in love with finn she dated with him marceline is the other case! she never showed any romantic feelings to finn... even to no one! this "relationship" was more forced than any others!
@@gipsymelody1268 Did you.. did you watch the video..? I'm also assuming you're either pretty young or English isn't your first language, and if you are relatively young, I guess that almost justifies this, but like, if you're not, I'm impressed. First of all, Finn x PB had so many issues stating all of them would be impossible, but I can start with some of them! Literally illegal, Finn is what, 13? And PB is 800 but, it's clearly implied that she'd be about 18-20 if she was a human with a normal lifespan. Finn doesn't understand any of PB's hardship, he was obsessed. It was a little more than a little concerning. Plus Finn x PB is shut down in season four (or season five, honestly I don't remember which but it was one of the two) and we don't get any more of it, so 'many seasons' isn't that many, not comparatively to how much of the show PB was single or romantically involved with Marcy, not even mentioning the history and probably multiple years that they were together prior to the show. We very clearly see Bubbline start with bitterness and just Marcy wanting to mess with PB as some sort of payback. It's resentful, they haven't spoken or properly interacted since their breakup, but that changes. PB sees that Marcy didn't just forget about her and doesn't totally hate her the way she thought, and Marcy sees that PB did care about Marcy, enough to keep that shirt from their first ever interaction, that she does have emotions. They go through adventures, the whole Sky Witch hassle happens, Varmints happens, and through all that we see their relationship turn from the fallout from a breakup to actual closeness. Stakes was a thing, we see so much insinuation in that. The copious amounts of staring into each other's eyes, the 'You think I'm nice?' and so much more. More leading up, and in that final, most important scene, we see their emotions come spilling out when Marcy destroys an entire monster in PB's honor. Honestly? That kiss and their relationship had so much buildup that I'm glad cartoon network let it happen, because it would've been weird if they didn't. Either way, it's very clear that Bubbline was so much more thought out than Finn x PB. And also more legal, a lot more legal. I'm guessing you disliking it or thinking otherwise is because you've grown up around so much heteronormativity that girl + girl equaling anything better than guy + girl is worldshattering. But when you look at the facts, PB and Marceline make a fantastic, healthy couple.
@@gipsymelody1268 You are delusional and/or you have never watched the show. PB had feelings for Finn only when she was 13. Those feelings ended when she grew up again. Everything else is one sided from Finn behalf and his interest in PB officially ended way back in season 5 when he himself acknowledged it. As for PB and Marceline, they were implied to have history as soon as they had their first scene in the show lol. Everything else from then on was implying even harder that they used to be together. You legit have to be blind not to realize it. Only reason it wasnt explicitly said earlier than the final is because during the early-mid 10's gay couples in cartoons were seen as bad. People literally got fired for stuff like that.
10:22 this is a trope i personally love in some ships; whenever there's an exception in what a character calls someone or what a character is called by someone, i'm like 99% more likely to ship them. for example, a character that's only ever referred to by their title or last name, except for that one character that calls them by their real name. or the other way around: a character that only ever refers to other people by their last name or title, except for that one character they refer to by first name (fun fact, this is the reason most people in the nevermoor fandom ship ezra squall and henry mildmay)
I love how much the show felt like it calmed down after its first half. I mean, yeah, there was still crazy stuff going on, but compared to the first few seasons that craziness felt like it was just chilling, and didn't need to be in-your face with how weird it was. It's the same for the relationships. By the later episodes everybody knew everybody else, the knew each other inside and out and were all okay with it, both their ups and their downs. I really liked that whole feel to it 😊
bro, you got me when you show the Cait & Vi 'oil and water' scene, like I just wanna chill and relax and watch a Bubbline analysis, and then Cait and Vi, MY BEST SHIP, jumped out of nowhere. I was really surprised and laughed of no reason. And putting that scene in the video makes me love your analysis even more =))
1:16 "That older cool cartoon girl every kid had a crush on" *proceeds to show Wendy and Enid* Me: Well - I mean.. *he's not wrong.* 😳 Great video btw, haven't completed it yet but I can tell it's gonna be great! :)
My headcanon is that they got together again right after Stakes. Then I feel like Marceline introducing PB to Simon is a way of introducing her "new" girlfriend" Another thing. Doing the apocalypse, bubblegum is actually there in bubblegumform, with Marcy and Simon
I never caught onto the ship earlier on when it first started out but once after that song episode with Marceline confessing, I was hooked. I remember back in 2014 that even Marceline's VA, Olivia Olson, made a statement confirming Bubbline was canon but soon after had to retract it cuz...it wasnt that LGBTQ friendly back then. I'm glad we came along so far with Bubbline and LGBTQ characers.
I actually shed a tear when they kissed, cause it not only finally confirmed their ship, but it also showed the shows defiance and they weren’t afraid to confirm their coloured flag. Also, I want an explanation to her dad, cause we saw she had a human mother, so, did she hook up with an Eldridge horror out of actual love or was there some kind of deal. I haven’t seen all the episodes so I might have missed something but it still just sticks with me on how her family tree works
they do not dude... they are one of the worst examples of wlw relationships... i am always taking Bubbline or even fuking Korrasami before them. It is so forced, and annoying, and shoved in people's faces... to be honest i do not know exactly why but it felt horrible. I do not care about morals or anything like that and even i can't stand it. Not because it is "toxic" because it was ugly... it is like the equivalent of "Blue is the warmest colour" you try to compare with "Portrait of Lady on fire" the whole show is like that, the whole show do not know where to concentarte most of the time throwing random things left and right as if they never really had any structure or plans. Some people are able to pull off the rushing "one go writing" probably because of pure talent and sense of the subject but the ones that are responsible for She-ra clearly were not part of this. Neither was good executed - characters, story, tropes, relationships... Only a fuking message and it was so forced it could drive crazy everyone and make anyone despite it.
I feel like these two succeeded where Korrasami didn’t do as well when it came to development and earning of the final moment. These two on the other hand were handled very well.
I was a blind child. I thought they were just good friends. But now I’m practically an adult and I know that the word Lesbian defines more than the inhabitants of an island off the coast of Greece. Also two gay men live next door to my grandparents.
GOD the idea that Finn hangs out with the pups like a cool uncle warms my heart because we have no goddamn clue when Jake actually died. I feel like Together Again came out too early, we needed to see more of finn's adult life, because that single scene with the van and him dancing just made me feel like "oh my god my little boy's become a man" and TA talked about him wasting his life after jake, which kinda broke my heart because OB shows him jamming out with his friends and being happy...
One more scene I'd love to draw attention to is in Nemesis, when one of the members of starchy's organisation talks about a winged shadowy demon appearing near PB's window at night sometimes. Then cut to the exact same thing happening at the start of Varmints and its just a confirmation of the two of them hanging out off screen.
How that nurse phrased it sounds funny to me now lol. I would like to also draw attention to Marceline's happy ending song (her version of the island song) that she actually got her ideal happy ending, the lyrics now complements what we saw in Obsidian.
I watched a live stream of the final episode with a bunch of random people? when Marceline and Bubblegum kissed we absolutely LOST our freaking minds, it was such an awesome experience to share. I hope those people are doing good now.
A well made video essay. Loved how you described the ship at different points of the series and its different pivotal moments. Bubbline is simply the best

That’s really cute
I think they came back in the pumpkin patch episode
Fr Stakes was basically a vampire hunting date for them with their friends joining
@#1 Ruby Oshi TBH who cares about the gender of the creator anyway?
@#1 Ruby Oshi ok and?
@#1 Ruby Oshi The 'creator' the person was referring to was the writers also the storyboarders, since it was them who thoroughly developed pb and Marcy's relationship.
@#1 Ruby Oshi girl what???😭 chill. y does it matter if the creator is a guy what was the point of even commenting that.
Minnie Campbell has a lot in common with PB.
@@cheezbiscuit4140 It's interesting that it's PB who sent Finn off during the first part of islands, making him promise that he will return (like a mother) and when Finn returned from his adventure with his mother, radically changed with a new perspective, PB changed too into a candy elemental.
That’s an amazing idea

She was a psychopath.
I did love Marceline and Bubblegum's relationship. It is perhaps the most mature one in Western Animation (that includes Adult Animation), seeing why they broke up and then managed to get together again after working on themselves is something I think people, not just kids need to see to form actual healthy relationships in the future.
I think the same should’ve happened to Finn and FP.
Fr in Obsidian Marceline asked if it was okay for her to sing the So Glad song in order to open the door. The song happened when they broke up so her asking shows how she's more considerate of Bonnie's feelings now
The most mature one is Jake and Lady Raincorn, the best one in general is Marceline and PB.
@@chrisperez9854 nah, kids should see representation of people breaking up because they’re not meant for each other.
Yeah at the first the ship sucked since it only happened at the ending of the show but Obsidian really tied some loose ends and made it a great ship
Honestly, the fact that these two had a thing for each other went over my head for the first few years/seasons honestly
Same but also in those seasons I didn't even reach the double digits yet so most things like that went over my head
Same here, I feel so stupid now that I'm rewatching this show 🤦
With them being exes getting back together, it's easy to see their drama.
Bubbline wasn’t thought of until WWM.
honestly same but only because my homophobic family made me think gay was just not a thing that happens

Poor unfortunate souls. Everyone is hypnotized by queer agenda.
It's as great as a root canal.

That sucks.
I really wish we can get more gay and straight relationships like bubbline

Until she scares them of before they can abandon her (see break up with PB) and in he end scaring them of befor getting close with them (beginning of adventure time).

we have the fluffy cute wholesome romance between two individuals who make eachother better, complement eachother perfectly and ultimately push through their differences to meet a happy conclusion, leaving only true, unconditional love on the horizon

No probs.
You don't see a lot of PB's character archetype on any shows.
@@dulcerocio5124 I get the feeling her actions would have been seen as less evil if she was a dude She's a soft pink female ruling candy kingdom FFS so anything other than sweet and benevolent will look bad

there’s too many male gay couples compared to lesbians couples, we need more lesbian representation
@@nana54fr I haven't seen any male couples in cartoons yet besides Voltron and that was awful rep imo.

Mannn the fact that PB and Marcy are together always makes me wonder if Gumball and Marshal Lee have this kinda history, because the boys seem like they just hate each other not because they're exes but because they're too different, their dislike for each other further reinforced by their fondness for Fionna
Probaly cause fionna and cake was a fanfic, so subtext relationships like the fallout of Marcellene and pb just became surface level bicker
Nah I’m not asexual I was just a stupid kid
He's a Barbarian, wannabe Paladin. Not a knight.
I hope the Fiona and Cake cartoon puts their boy counterparts together as well.

Lol true, they even make a joke about that in that one episode where Finn tears off his pajamas and he's wearing his classic clothes underneath and Jake's like:
"Do you ever take those off?"
Another reason why Adventure Time was so awesome and unique. Not many cartoons have their characters in completely different outfits for every appearance. They usually have them just wear the same stuff out of convenience for animating. But for Marcy, PB, and FP, they really went the extra mile.

The way that there was uneasy tension between them at the start and they slowly talked again, discussed past pains, and re-entered each other's lives before dating in the finale was gradual and I felt as though the flow was more realistic. And in Obsidian you can tell that they treat each other better compared to the first time they dated. What a wonderful analysis of this amazing couple! 💖 I'm literally only on Season 2 of the show, but I've just had to go ahead and watch all the Bubbline scenes because I knew that they got together from it being all over the Internet a few years ago.
10:22 this is a trope i personally love in some ships; whenever there's an exception in what a character calls someone or what a character is called by someone, i'm like 99% more likely to ship them.

or the other way around: a character that only ever refers to other people by their last name or title, except for that one character they refer to by first name (fun fact, this is the reason most people in the nevermoor fandom ship ezra squall and henry mildmay)

I never caught onto the ship earlier on when it first started out but once after that song episode with Marceline confessing, I was hooked.
