I do that all the times instead playing my PS1 games on my PS2, I play it in my PS3 and the best of all is that the PS3 you can install the memory card of PS1 too in the harddrive of PS3 without needing to buy a memory card of PS1.
Hi there. I have a question. I'm from South Africa and my PS3 is the PAL region. I noticed on the ps store that theres a Resident Evil 1,2,3 bundle but 2 and 3 are US NTSC versions. Will those digital versions work on my PAL PS 3? I know PS 3 games themselves arnt region locked but will I be able to play digital versions of US NTSC PS One games?
The backwards compatibility with PS1 games was in fact the main reason why I got a PS3 back in 2011. Felt the need to play the Legend of Mana and the original Spyro trilogy again.

Currently playing Resident Evil 2 1998 via the ps3 store and having a blast! Having so many options to play ps1 and ps2 games is one of the many reasons I love the ps3 so much!
Even though emulation is easy and painless, I still like having some digital and disc PS1 games, especially ones I consider personally valuable. On disc, I recently got The World is Not Enough, Bushido Blade, Toy Story 2, and Metal Gear Solid. I have many more digitally, but I still feel it's important to own your favorite games. Nothing beats loaning your buddies a disc for them to try out your favorite games.
@@TravisTrixta85 I've got every MGS on disc, they all run great! MGS1 is stellar, that PS1 capability of the PS3 is top notch, very close to original feel.
Woah what??? I love everything about the PS3 and am the biggest PlayStation fanboy, but I never knew that you could play PS1 discs on the slim PS3s, I thought they removed that along with the hardware needed to run PS2 games. Can't believe I learned this in 2021, this is amazing!
It’s great, isn’t it? Any PS3 can play 2 generations of consoles libraries. Only that one model of fat PS3 can play the PS2 games too. I would avoid it completely as the fat PS3’s have a short lifespan due to overheating issues.
@@southernfried19 fun fact:all ps3s have ps2 emulators on them I have a ps3 super slim and I can play pretty much any ps2 game only some games don't work
You can also reassign controls. If you have an early ps1 game that does not support the thumbsticks you can remap it so it does. I never get tired of playing Bushido Blade 1&2. I'm glad I still have a way to play them.
@@MoDzrGoDz press the PS button. It will bring up the menu to quit the game. Underneath that option is one for controller settings. Choose that and you're there!

Trust me, use a component cable to play PS1 games for the best possible experience, ( if your T.V supports them lower PS1 resolutions though ) and by the way!, did you know that if your CMOS battery dies all your digital content dies also, and you would have to buy them all over again?, something Sony don't want you to know, and something to consider before selling your collection and going fully digital!!

I own a Ps1 classic, bought it at Walmart on sale for $20 modded it with over 100 games most of the expensive ones. I don't play PS1 games on my PS3 even though I have the physical disk for it or nor I play PS2 games on my PS3. I do own a PS2 and own many PS2 games and I love playing it. I can't believe I've owned a PS3 super slim for years and I've literally just learned that you can play physical PS1 discs on it! Time to buy some classics!
As of 5th November 2023, I can confirm that both EU and US PSN stores are fully operational on PS3, and you can still make purchases. You can only spend funds that are in your PSN wallet, but you can still get these PS1/PS2 classics.

Still like your enthusiasm :) A great game that's on PSN is the Mr Driller "G" that was Japanese only. It's a puzzle game so language really doesn't matter. Of course this game has many versions on all kinds of systems, I just think this one is one of the best. Also, for some reason it does not emulate well on low end ARM-based systems so an official package is welcome.
I've heard of that game but haven't seen it yet! I think the magic of going back is seeing all these import games we never got a chance to experience but ways of doing so now. Thanks for watching!!!
Yeaaah. I'm playing all these on my chipped PS1. I'm about half way through the second castle of SOTN for probably the hundredth time. I'm not paying £500+ for SOTN. I don't care how good or 'rare' it is. Super Castlevania IV annoys me too. There are fecking tons of copies out there but it's dumb expensive. The same with a lot of these 'rare' titles that aren't actually rare. Just some youtuber's come on and said "this game's awesome" and it goes up in price. Earthbound another good example, stupidly common but high price tag.
PS1 games are being region locked on every PS3 console so softmod exploits such as HEN exploit or jailbroken PS3 will allow players to run imports and backups as well.
Thanks for a great video. I was in high school when the PSX first came on the scene and bought my first PS1 game (you guessed it FF7). I unfortunately missed out on alot of good games for the console back when these were first released. But I am now starting to catchup on getting these old relics to play. Alot of the ebay prices are out of control thanks to greedy sellers who think their games are worth alot of gold. Not all of them. But thanks to garage sales and thrift stores I have gotten a good amount of games for very cheap. And yes every PS3 from the phats to the super slims can play PS1 games. If you had the early phat models (A01, B01 and E01 with partial BC), PS2 games can be played with full compatibility as well. Anyway great video!
After recent updates Sony has made it almost impossible to find older games on the PS3 store. The webstore no longer has them, so I'll have to test out a few other ways and make a video about it. It really sucks.
This is a great video. I just found out about this recently. Thanks for getting this out there. However, Einhander is an expensive game, but it's not nearly close to being one of the most expensive. Suikoden 1 and 2 are two to three times more expensive used. The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, a Mega Man Legends spin-off, is $700 used complete in box, over $1,200 new. Anyways, great video.
@@PlayerJuan no i never got a ps2. I only got my ps3 bcoz of the pandemic tbh. Skyrim was a big disappointment. My save file is 14mb and the game freezes. Im currently looking for bfm lol i even had the exact demo of it you had in this video. Sony is real weird for not having a bigger ps1 selection on psn. What motivated me to buy my ps3 was to play star ocean till the end of time thinking i could just get it off psn but to no avail. And now after watching a full walkthrough i think the last hope was the better game, not by much mind you but i really enjoyed playing it. Ive seen a good few copies of bfm for sale in Quebec and Ontario on fb marketplace. One guy has it for $50 manual case art black label, another guy for $90 same condition. Im real tempted to buy it nect month. Idk. Wild Arms 2 is fun. I wanna buy suikoden 2 and 3, plus Alundra sooner or later especially if i cant get bfm. Tryin to make up for all the games i missed since 2004 when i graduated from highschool lol.
The original PS1 Harry Potter & the Chambers of Secretes CD game has so much pixelation with and without the smoothing playing it on the PS3 as compared to my PS1. My PS1 is dead sadly.
How can you tell if a ps1 game is not compatible with the ps3? I just bought Digimon Digital Card Battle and i can’t find it on a compatibility list, so I’m not sure if it is compatible. Whenever I turn the game on, I see the PlayStation logo and then a black screen.. I don’t know what to do next 🙁
All PS1 games should be compatible, though PS3s can run into problem reading CDs. A good test is to put in a music CD and see if those work well in your console.
Its a great feature....however try playing deathtrap dungeon on ps3, no sound in game, it wont save and you cant play as the woman! Sad as I love that game, anyone know of a fix!
Well, I'm perhaps a bit late but I literally can't find an answer on the whole internet: In PS3 rgb settings you can choose full or limited and I know what that means and my tv is capable of full range. Every PS3 game or App like retroarch is fine with full, but: PS2 and PS1 is not, always crushed black. So everytime I wanna play PS1 or PS2 on the PS3 i have set rgb to limited to get propper black (automatic mode fails). And my question is: Is it supposed to be so? The ps1classic has full range by default, but what about the PS3?
I am trying to get my recently (as of today) PS1 disk of Lego island 2 to be in my internal memory card on the PS3 (and I have a slim, which only backwards to PS1)... Here's the best info I could get about region-specific ps1 games on ps3: The PS3 is still region coded when it comes to PSOne games, DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies. The only thing that is region free is PS3 games. As for PS2 games, the PS3 hasn't been able to play those ever since they stopped making the earlier 80 GB model (last seen in the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle). - Gamespot. Hope that helps!!

I have been having issues playing tomb raider 2 (ps1) game on my ps3 slim. It will freeze usually when I try to access the menu with weapons and health packs. Ever experienced this and any advice on how to fix ?
My uncle told me exact the same thing. I have the Slim version of PS3 with very low usage over the years, cuz I used to have 2 of them. When I try to play a PSone disc, it just doesn't read it. I can't play any of my PS1 games, however, I have NO problem playing PS3 games. Whats wrong with it?

Anyone have any idea if the original PSOne Resident Evil is available for download thru the store? I've seen they have, at least as of the date of this post, the original RE2 and RE3 to purchase on PS3, but no where can I find the original Resident Evil thru the console interface or in the online store thru a web browser which makes no sense. Why would they offer the original RE2/RE3 but not the game that started it all!? Thanks for anyone's help on this
Did you know that the PS3 - PS1 emulator can play copied PS1 discs plus you can also put the games on the hard drive and play of that lol hope this helps people out 😁
Does anyone know if Jedi power battles and phantom menace work? If so can I use a DualShock 4 controller on ps3 while playing the old ps1 games? Great video!
Yes to all of the above! The DS4 works great on the PS3 although it sometimes has compatibility issues. The best way to use it is via USB as bluetooth detects it as a generic controller.

Us Europeans got it so bad between games locked to a certain language, frame rates staying at 50fps instead of 60, tons of missing classics that are available in the US piled onto the fact that the store itself is so shit and that there is no way to buy stuff for the ps3 on the website store

Yes! I own a slim PS3 and those type of ps1 discs work just fine. Glad to see the family is able to enjoy these older games on the console.

Thanks for a great video. I was in high school when the PSX first came on the scene and bought my first PS1 game (you guessed it FF7). I unfortunately missed out on alot of good games for the console back when these were first released. But I am now starting to catchup on getting these old relics to play. Alot of the ebay prices are out of control thanks to greedy sellers who think their games are worth alot of gold. Not all of them. But thanks to garage sales and thrift stores I have gotten a good amount of games for very cheap. And yes every PS3 from the phats to the super slims can play PS1 games. If you had the early phat models (A01, B01 and E01 with partial BC), PS2 games can be played with full compatibility as well.

After recent updates Sony has made it almost impossible to find older games on the PS3 store. The webstore no longer has them, so I'll have to test out a few other ways and make a video about it. It really sucks.

Im currently looking for bfm lol i even had the exact demo of it you had in this video. Sony is real weird for not having a bigger ps1 selection on psn. What motivated me to buy my ps3 was to play star ocean till the end of time thinking i could just get it off psn but to no avail. And now after watching a full walkthrough i think the last hope was the better game, not by much mind you but i really enjoyed playing it. Ive seen a good few copies of bfm for sale in Quebec and Ontario on fb marketplace. One guy has it for $50 manual case art black label, another guy for $90 same condition. The original PS1 Harry Potter & the Chambers of Secretes CD game has so much pixelation with and without the smoothing playing it on the PS3 as compared to my PS1. My PS1 is dead sadly.

How can you tell if a ps1 game is not compatible with the ps3? I just bought Digimon Digital Card Battle and i can’t find it on a compatibility list, so I’m not sure if it is compatible. Whenever I turn the game on, I see the PlayStation logo and then a black screen.. I don’t know what to do next 🙁
All PS1 games should be compatible, though PS3s can run into problem reading CDs. A good test is to put in a music CD and see if those work well in your console.
Did a search for PSONE today in the PS3 Store and found nothing. Looks like the games are still there but the filter doesn't bring them up anymore.

Its a great feature....however try playing deathtrap dungeon on ps3, no sound in game, it wont save and you cant play as the woman! Sad as I love that game, anyone know of a fix!

Well, I'm perhaps a bit late but I literally can't find an answer on the whole internet: In PS3 rgb settings you can choose full or limited and I know what that means and my tv is capable of full range. Every PS3 game or App like retroarch is fine with full, but: PS2 and PS1 is not, always crushed black. So everytime I wanna play PS1 or PS2 on the PS3 i have set rgb to limited to get propper black (automatic mode fails). And my question is: Is it supposed to be so? The ps1classic has full range by default, but what about the PS3?

And yes you can save on HDD, and also transfer to PSP or Vita
I am trying to get my recently (as of today) PS1 disk of Lego island 2 to be in my internal memory card on the PS3 (and I have a slim, which only backwards to PS1)... Here's the best info I could get about region-specific ps1 games on ps3: The PS3 is still region coded when it comes to PSOne games, DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies. The only thing that is region free is PS3 games. As for PS2 games, the PS3 hasn't been able to play those ever since they stopped making the earlier 80 GB model (last seen in the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle). - Gamespot. Hope that helps!!

I have been having issues playing tomb raider 2 (ps1) game on my ps3 slim. It will freeze usually when I try to access the menu with weapons and health packs. Ever experienced this and any advice on how to fix ?
My uncle told me exact the same thing. I have the Slim version of PS3 with very low usage over the years, cuz I used to have 2 of them. When I try to play a PSone disc, it just doesn't read it. I can't play any of my PS1 games, however, I have NO problem playing PS3 games. Whats wrong with it?

Anyone have any idea if the original PSOne Resident Evil is available for download thru the store? I've seen they have, at least as of the date of this post, the original RE2 and RE3 to purchase on PS3, but no where can I find the original Resident Evil thru the console interface or in the online store thru a web browser which makes no sense. Why would they offer the original RE2/RE3 but not the game that started it all!? Thanks for anyone's help on this
Did you know that the PS3 - PS1 emulator can play copied PS1 discs plus you can also put the games on the hard drive and play of that lol hope this helps people out 😁

Weirdly enough the PS3s are indeed region free but that doesn't apply to PS1/PS2 games. :( Only blu-ray disc-based games.

Yes to all of the above! The DS4 works great on the PS3 although it sometimes has compatibility issues. The best way to use it is via USB as bluetooth detects it as a generic controller.

You can still play many of these great games! Not all of them hold-up, but ones like Megaman Legends are still great.
